What is Fate? (Percy Jackson and the Olympians Quest)

i feel like learning archery would be good we could probably make a bow and arrows with plants and make some weird arrows with the concepts for plants we will do.

If we go to camp we will have pretty much all the facilities we need to do any sort of training or discovery. Unless the QM plans to start the main portion of the story right as we enter. But I doubt that staying out of camp will prevent him from forcing danger upon us

[X][Camp] You should go, it's only for the summers, right?

Seems like a no brainer

[X][Camp] You should go, it's only for the summers, right?
since were only gonna train plant stuff outside of came might as well go now

[X][Camp] You want to be a bit older and more skilled before you go to Camp Half-Blood. (What do 4 things do you focus on for the next year?)

I want to check it out, but there are other things that need to get done (I think). Especially:

-[X][Preparation] Join a Martial Arts Dojo of some kind.
--[X][Preparation] Judo
--[][Preparation] Jujutsu
--[][Preparation] Krav Maga

-[X][Preparation] Join a Martial Arts Dojo of some kind. #2
--[][Preparation] Judo
--[][Preparation] Jujutsu
--[X][Preparation] Krav Maga

I really think we should start studying up on a Martial Art. What if there are no plants around? If we don't have seeds on us? If the enemy(s) aren't affected by plants? Only reason I'm voting for skipping camp is because I think this will be a very necessary skill.

Both Judo and Jujutsu are very plant-like. Soft, pliable, but unyielding. Who knows, they might even inspire our Chlorokinesis in some way. Jujutsu being more focused on facing armed opponents and Judo on throwing and ground techniques. Krav Maga on the other hand is probably the best bet for pure efficacy in a Martial Art.

-[X][Preparation] Train your Chlorokinesis.
-[X][Preparation] Practice imbuing plants with qualities they shouldn't have and sometimes qualities that shouldn't exist.

No need to comment on these two.

Our biggest enemy are supernatural monsters I honestly doubt martial arts designed to fight normal humans will be effective against any but the weakest of them and unarmed combat still seems like a terrible idea against them. Unless we just go there to just learn the basics of fighting and quit, it isn't worth spending the time to get actually good at any of the styles as it would take too long and wouldn't be effective against significant majority of the monsters we could encounter.

If you want a fighting style it would be a much better idea to go to Camp-Half blood and get weapons training that teaches fighting techniques that I assume are specialized for fighting the wide variety of monsters there are as i'm pretty sure a lot of them aren't humanoid which would render most of the martial arts kinda useless.

Huh, a decent Percy Jackson quest is definitely a surprise to find. If we get to the Heroes of Olympus part hopefully there won't be as many issues at that series had. Riordan dropped the ball when he tried to write a series with 7 (+2) main characters -- he couldn't handle the agency they should have had when they weren't the perspective he was writing from.

That, and Jason was basically Percy but not as good.

[X][Camp] You should go, it's only for the summers, right?

The only good reason to not go to camp would be the random encounters we can have. There's little in the way of useful training that we can't get as good or better inside camp.

I guess. I just think it's a bad idea to have no non-magic skills to fall back on if we're in a fight. And you may be underestimating martial arts. All of the provided options are about leveraging skill to defeat larger and more powerful enemies.

But the vote is more or less decided so it's a moot point anyway.

Camp is only during summer unless we choosr to stay all year round, which I don't think we'd want. So once summer is over, what's tp say we can't start a learning martial arts?

Camp is like for three months a year people. Again, unless we decide to become all year campers, but that is a strange choice to make since we ge along with our Dad and we have never been expelled from school. In fact we're doing great. I believe we just finished middle school?

@Monk Penguin shouldn't the flower we got from Pear be in our Notable Items on the character sheet?

Still a human sized, strong, and durable person though.

Demigods and their problems are too superhuman for most of those to be of use where a demigod equivalent can't be substituted. Demigod Greco-Roman wrestling will be at least as impressive as Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling, their hardcore climbing wall* where they decide climbing wasn't hard enough so they added hazards, any weapon training although Chiron probably looks down on guns**, education on what the monsters that might go after us could be like, etc.

There's a limited number of useful skills we can't acquire in camp, and unarmed combat isn't one.
Edit: admittedly, if you desire a specific martial art rather than unarmed combat in general, you may need to seek it out away from camp.

...I also think I understand part of why camp half-blood is summer only. Demigods usually won't have other demigods at their school, most probably don't leave behind a Scent like Percy's***, and they spend a lot of time surrounded by mortals they interact with. Any monsters they do attract are probably easily handled with even a single summer of training and celestial bronze weaponry****

*Seriously, rock climbing is hard. It can be trained just fine with plenty of practice, but skill and strength in other activities doesn't easily transfer. Demigods have the advantage of divine strength, but that's still pretty crazy.

**To be fair, a well trained demigod with a celestial bronze weapon is probably more effective at dealing with monsters than one that's given a gun. Plenty of monsters die as soon as they're hit by celestial bronze.

***Who basically has to be compared to Heracles since he's just that good compared to the rest of the demigods. Not always the best comparison, but he can be considered the upper end for most things.

****Admittedly, the weapon is probably the game changer. Most demigods probably don't develop a battle useful power until they get to camp, so the weapons they take back are probably what allows them to leave safely. Compare to the Romans who seem to live in their camp year round and have limited supplies of their anti-monster gear

@Monk Penguin is it bad that the dividers you use make me think those are the souls of the damned in hades, crying out "AAAAAAAAA"?

The majority of the things we'd learn would be useless against most monsters and trying to judo throw something like a Minotaur or something is just a terrible idea when you could just stab it. Not to mention compared to the dubious quality of instruction you could get at public martial arts lessons, Camp Half-Blood has literal legends that have been teaching for centuries, who would be teaching us how to kill actual monsters instead of techniques meant to incapacitate humans.

I think it's important to eventually learn how to incapacitate even normal people since we never know if we might get into an altercation with one. Just not right now. Sure we could use our plants against them, but I'd much rather keep our abilities for monsters and not exhaust Sam. Especially when we never know when a supernatural attack might happen.

Camp Year 1 Part I
[x][Camp] You should go, it's only for the summers, right?

You were almost ten, and you supposed it was about time you went to Camp Half-Blood. If anything, it would force you to interact with other people… probably. Plus, you wouldn't have to hide how different you were from others. You stayed home the weekend after your dad took you to the park. On the last day before you left, you celebrated the Fourth of July with your dad by setting off some bottle rockets. You vaguely remembered those being illegal or something, but maybe those laws hadn't been passed yet.

On Monday, July 5th, 1999, your Dad drove you to Camp Half-blood for the first time. It was a surprisingly mundane drive. You were constantly checking around for any monsters that would come and ambush you or something, but they never materialized. Your dad, picking up on your nervousness, would often ask you if you saw anything pursuing since he assumed that The Mist was hiding it from him. You told him no every time, but your nervousness seemed to rub off on him and he didn't stop asking throughout the whole trip.

When you actually got there, you just sort of grabbed your things from the trunk of the car. Then, you walked up the hill. You looked around and wondered idly which one of the hills was supposed to become Half-Blood Hill. You turned back to give your father a wave goodbye. Would you try and change Thalia's fate? Could you?

You pulled yourself out of your thoughts to examine the house you were walking towards. It was quite large, though not the largest building you'd ever seen. It wasn't even the largest house you'd ever seen, though it was pretty big. It's three floors towered above everything else in the vicinity, namely the volleyball court. You glanced up at the top, wondering if you would ever have an audience with the Oracle. Your thoughts on that were the same as your thoughts on being a part of the camp. You were excited, yet anxious. To be fair, you only had about 2 months or so since school was starting up again in the second week fo September. You feel like summer should be longer than this, but then again, so does every kid, probably. The thought of being a year-round camper had crossed your mind, but you loved your dad too much to just abandon him like that. Besides, 2 months was enough.

Your footsteps carried you to the front of the Big House. Honestly, you weren't really sure what to do. Also, you can practically feel the presence on the other side of the house. It's not you, per se, but rather the plants around that seem to have some sort of reaction to Dionysus's presence. You aren't all that surprised. After a moment of indecision, you decide to walk around to the other side. You spy Chiron, in full centaur form playing cards with Dionysus, with his scruffy black hair and Hawaiian shirt.

Dionysus glances over at you. "Ah, and I was winning that hand too. Go on then, Chiron, and get the little snot all settled in." You weren't sure what to think of Dionysus, as you were pretty sure he was just cranky about his punishment. You decided to go the safe route.

You bowed as best you could, laden with luggage as you were. "Lord Dionysus," you greet.

Dionysus raises an eyebrow, then goes back to looking at his cards. Chiron has made his way to you. He examines you for a minute.

"How did you make your way here child?"

"I uh, my dad dropped me off?"

He stares at you some more. "Believe it or not, that is actually a fairly uncommon way to arrive. Come, let me show you the orientation video, though I doubt you'll need it considering you recognized the Camp Director on sight. Come along now," he said, trotting back into the house.

You entered and followed him to what appeared to be a mini-theater. In a few well-practiced motions, he inserted what appeared to be an old-timey film reel and the orientation video started. It was basically stuff you already knew. It probably would have helpfully informed you on things like the mess hall and the cabin system if your knowledge only extended towards mythology, but you had more comprehensive info than that.

When it was done, Chiron comes and gets you. He finally introduces himself.

"As the video has shown you, I am the Activities Director here at Camp Half-Blood."

"I'm Samuel Woods. It's umm, nice to meet you."

"It is good to meet you as well, now- Ah, Jordan, could you please give this one a tour and then escort him to the Hermes cabin?"

"Sure," A rather tall kid in an orange Camp Half-Blood T-shirt and jeans walks up to the two of you.

"Jordan, this is Samuel Woods. He is new around here. Samuel, this is Jordan Yu head counselor of Cabin Six."

"It's nice to meet you," you say, and as he looks down at you, you notice the grey eyes that mark him as a son of Athena.

He gives you a genial smile, "I can take it from here Chiron."

"Thank you," Chiron trots off, leaving you with Jordan.

Jordan starts walking towards the cabins, going slow enough that it's not too hard for you to follow him.

"So, little young to be at camp, aren't you?" he asks casually.

You're not sure if it's supposed to be a taunt, but it doesn't really bother you. You are aware of how young you are, or maybe it's the abundance of plants that are having a calming effect on you. "How old are people usually?"

"Mm, the younger ones tend to show up around 12 or 13, though some people don't make it here until they're 15 or so."

"And what about you?" The video informed you that to be head counselor, he had to have been the child of Athena who was at camp the longest.

"Me, I've been here 4 years now. I'll turn 18 this coming fall, and probably apply for college."

It's so ordinary when you don't have to think about the danger of staying away from camp for so long.

"Enough about me though, you're the person of interest here. As you know, I'm a son of Athena. Any ideas on your own godly parent?" He says this right as you're passing Cabin 4, presumably on your way to see the mess hall. You stop and look up at the cabin that is practically covered in plants. Tomatoes are growing up the walls, while the porch is covered in different kinds of flowers. You can tell the roof is made of still-living grass.

"I think I have an idea." You turn to see Jordan kneeling next to you. A quick sweep around the cabin area shows that all the demigods around are kneeling as well. You're about to question why. Then, you remember.

You look up and see an ear of wheat spinning slowly above your head, glowing gold. It fades.

Jordan stands up and grins at you. "I guess that answers that question, though with your name I suppose I should have guessed." Was that a joke? Is it bad that you're honestly not sure? "Give me a minute while I rustle up your head counselor. She can finish the tour for you, even if I barley got started." Oh god, he's making puns now.

He goes up to the Demeter cabin and knocks on the door. It opens silently, despite all the plant matter growing on and around it. You can tell it's magic.

A girl with brown hair not dissimilar to your own opens the door.

"Is Lily in?" Jordan asks.

"Yeah, just give me a moment to go get her."

A few moments later, a girl steps out of the Demeter cabin.

"Sam, this is Lily Evans, Head Counselor of Cabin 4. Lily, this Samuel Woods, your newest half-sibling."

"Oh, it's so good to meet you!" she exclaims, running over to you and shaking your hand.

"He hasn't had the tour yet, so I was wondering if you wanted to give it to him."

"Of course!"

She takes you on a merry tour of the various facilities while describing a typical half-blood's schedule.

"So the only mandatory activities for all campers are the daily activities. We and another cabin will wind up paired up for a month for these things. I'm talking about your combat classes, your archery, your foraging, or your climbing. Then, there are the activities mandatory for Cabin Four. Every member needs to spend at least an hour each day tending to the strawberry fields because somebody has to do it and we can't leave it all to the satyrs. We typically also do Arts & Crafts on Thursdays, but you don't have to come if you don't want too. Lastly, there's capture the flag every Saturday, but more on that later."

Pick 7 Things to focus on for the first out of your two months at Camp Half-Blood before school begins. Remember if you want to vote for the same thing a second time to add a #2 (#3 for the third etc.)

QM Note:

I'm a little nervous about this since this is by far the most characters I've ever written about at once, but I'll try and make it work.

I decided to go moth-based instead of weekly because I didn't want to get bogged down unless something happens, in which case you'll suddenly be covering a lot less in-game time per update.

Blossom will show up in the next chapter, don't worry.
