All espers get a stipend from the city for cooperating with powers research.
A level 3's stipend is enough to be middle class income.
Level 4's get paid even more. Check out Kuroko's fancy phone.
Level 5s'...I dare say Misaka is making more money from the city than her parents are earning.

Level 1s and 2s basically get subsistence though, and level 0s barely get enough for housing.

You have a set amount that is enough to live well on per month, I hadn't added that to your Credits, and was going to leave it as 'Room and Groceries paid for' plus about 250 Credits per month. Moving to Tokiwadai actually increases that to about 400 per month.

Ways to earn money, well, there will be offers like the Pyro Post and others. (Quests with payouts)
You can get a part time job, with varying pay.
There will be a 'Points to Cash' thing available at some point, but that is rather inefficient.

I think there's a bonus for participating in specific exotic research as well, though most of those are dark side or associated with the dark side. Misaka got royalties for 'neurological research'(read Sisters).

Running fireman and being a reporter should add a bonus, though we should be careful about what we report, or the dark side rises.

To put it into perspective, you are going to the rich girls school, and are reasonably well off, a powerful current-gen camera (ballparking) will be about 200 Credits. In addition to that, your room and board are paid for already, you could go broke and still live fine unless you vote to touch that money.

Credits =/= Dollars.

Somewhat. The students buy most of the gadgets with their stipend anyway, so it's like open beta for the manufacturers. Teenagers with lots of money are perfect for field testing.

Well, we could always consider buying a camera off the net. It would be horrendously expensive, but money doesn't seem too much of a problem here.

An advanced smartphone will suffice.

EDIT:

While AC smartphones should have half-decent cameras too, I doubt, that they are nearly good as a present DSLR.

You could get a cam-recorder that can do both, slightly more pricey, but you get what you pay for.
