Boot 4: One for All
[X]Soldiering: You are going to learn how to be a soldier, so that means marching in formation, shooting, and teamwork. Rolled:
1D100 => 68+30=98
It was rather easy, learning to be a soldier.
It was formations, drilling, and constant improvement.
There were days that you would stand in the freezing weather of Reach's windy days, with gusts so powerful that some people were literally knocked off their feet.
But the discipline was growing, and now frightened, scared children that were brought in were hardened by weeks of discipline. There were some slackers yes, some of the kindly rulebreakers that would twist every rule that Mendez gave them in good fun and profit.
You were becoming the spartans that Mendez was molding you into.
Reward: Soldiering to Spartan Level.
[X]Riflemanship: You are being taught how to use, maintain, and clean a standard battle rifle. Rolled:
1D100 => 37+30=67
Holding a rifle and shooting it was… complicated.
It was hard, very hard, and it was completely… foreign to you, and to light.
You were pretty bad at it, but you could get the hang of it.
Hopefully without killing someone.
Reward: Riflemanship set to Marine skill Level.
-[X]Battlefield Tactics: You are going to learn how to command people on the battlefield. Rolled:
1D100 => 39+30=69
Your first march into total military tactics and strategy was not the best. At least to the level you held yourself too.
Such methods and ideas were needed to totally destroy the enemy, but compared to the other spartans… you were dreadfully slow.
Reward: Battlefield Tactics set to Marine Level.
-[X]Engineering: Light wants to… Well, he doesn't know why, but the one thing he was never able to do was engineering… You are going to change that. Rolled:
1D100 => 81+30=111
Light smiled, his corporeal form, in your mind's eye, standing by you, clearly grinning as you showed him the design of your idea. "To be honest… It requires a helluva lot of energy, enough titanium to make a tank, and have enough padding in it to not crush your bones immediately during use."
"So you're saying it's impractical?" You asked.
"Not impractical… just expensive. Though If I had some more time to think about it… I might come up with something better." He replied.
"Well, come back to me with those improvements." You stated.
"Will do." Light then disappeared back into your mind's eye… and good old Chief Mendez was flabbergasted at the detail of your schematics…
You told him that it was not ready yet.
Reward: Engineering is set to Spartan Rank.
-[X]Spend time with Purple Team: You are going to learn how your team operates, and get to know them. Caleb for one, has… something interesting going on. Daisy is a thief that likes shiny things, and Ralph is...well, Ralph. He likes explosives more than you care to admit. Rolled:
1D100 => 78
Ralph was at the Grenade range, tossing Fragmentation Grenades out into the open field and watching them explode.
"Hey." He said, throwing a grenade with little effort, all the way to the target.
You sat down nearby. "Hey." you greeted him.
You sighed. Light stood by you. "I know what you're thinking, and despite my training and your genius, you cannot just go rushing into trauma therapy and force the healing process."
"You make it sound like ignoring it is a good idea." you stated, your voice hidden by the sound of a live grenade going off.
"I didn't say that." Light replied, folding his arms, and leaning against the wall.
"Then why won't you let me help him?" Another grenade went off.
"It is not something that can be treated like a disease or injury, your first aid class should have taught you that." You sighed at the man's impeccable logic.
"But I'm going to try anyway." You said.
Light faded away, out of sight, but still in your mind. He understood that there was no stopping you from trying.
"Ralph." You started to feel a small… caution in your voice.
"What?" He asked.
"You alright?" You asked.
Ralph looked confused, and for a moment, you thought he was… about to scream at you in anger.
Then he set down the grenade, and looked at you. "Why do you care?"
"Because I do." You replied the simple honesty in your voice was true.
Ralph then did something you didn't expect.
He began to cry. It must have been the first time someone actually asked him about what he was truly feeling. Someone who wasn't a doctor… or Mendez.
He cried for awhile… that was fine. It was good to cry. He needed it.
It was going to take time to heal… but that was okay. You would be there for them.
And Ralph… He trusted that about you. He wanted you to listen… and you did.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daisey however was trying to steal something from you, when you saw her trying to pick the lock on your wall locker.
"Daisey what are you doing?" You asked.
"Picking your lock." She stated, without even caring that you were seeing her do it.
"But we're teammates." you stated.
"I know, but I really need the practice, and you won't mind… right?" She smiled as she asked.
"I would like to talk to you." You sat down on your bed and watched her take out the lockpick and sit down.
Daisy sighed. "What about?" She asked.
"Are you okay?" you asked.
"Yeah, why do you ask?" She asked.
"Because, I just want to know how everyone is doing. I want to know if everyone is alright." You replied.
Daisy sighed. "And you won't leave me alone until you get an answer?"
You nodded. "A Truthful answer."
Daisy smiled. "Why do you care?"
"Because I do. Someone has to." you replied.
Daisy than laughed. "Okay Doctor…-"
She told you everything that was bothering her. And she was feeling much better, about everything, knowing you were there.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Caleb was smiling… but you had a question about his whole… scar.
"My scar… you want to know about it?" He stated, causing you to look at him, confused.
"Yes." You replied.
He laughed. "Everyone wants to know…" He looked up at the stars. "Guess I don't blame them, it's a very distinguishing feature."
"Come on." you persisted.
"Calm down Doctor-" The words made you flinch. Only Daisy ever called you that.
His smile was larger now, seeing your reaction. "Most people are surprised about that too."
"How did you-" You wanted to question Caleb, but he laughed.
"Oh come now, you want to know about my scar, or how I knew things like that without even asking Daisy?"
You remained silent, and allowed him to continue.
"I was in an accident when I was 4… the tractor exploded and sent a rod through my head. I woke up a few hours later in a hospital… and I have ever since… been able to concentrate… and see the future." He stated.
"Precognition is-" You wanted to protest the impossibility of such a random event, but Caleb put up his hand.
"Improbable. A truly one in an innumerable chance, a true miracle that i have power, and survived such an event?" He asked.
"Yes." You stated.
"I wonder why I survived every day, but sometimes, I stop to ask questions… at lot of them, led to you." He replied.
"And, what question was asked?" you asked.
"Who knows why I survived. All it showed was you." He then gave a smile. "Not that it really matters. I just always wanted to know why i have these visions, and survived."
You sighed. "I wish I could tell you… but even though I am skilled at first aid, I don't have the equipment necessary to even attempt such a thing."
Caleb than laughed. "I know. I just trust you, because… you haven't me down yet."
You gave a smile. "Let's hope your faith in me is rewarded."
Caleb for his part nodded. "I think we'll see how it is rewarded, not if."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reward: Ralph is slowly on the road to recovery with his trauma.
Daisy views you as a friend, or at the very least, a buddy.
Caleb trusts you with his life, based on his visions. New Action Available.
-[X]Spend Time with another Team: You want to spend time with your other spartans. They are your family now. Rolled:
1D100 => 17
-- [X] Team Blue
John and Blue Team requested that you do not really work with them right now. Something about John's hyper-competitive streak has… made it difficult for him to reach out to others right now.
Failure.
-[X]Psychological Evaluation: You have been requested to take a Psych Evaluation. (Note, not taking it now, will not harm you, but you must take it in the next two turns, or lose actions) Rolled:
1D100 => 99
The evaluation went well.
Too well.
"Doctor, the questions you asked me were not very relevant to discern my psychological profile… nor were they actually good at discerning such a thing." you stated.
"Spartan-131, I must state that I am far more qualified then you are when judging mental health."
It was then you realized something… She had mismarked her papers…
"Then why do you have me marked as medically insane?" You asked.
She frowned. "Spartan, you have been sent to a truly terrifying situation, and you have clearly hidden your traumas very well, I am referring you to further evaluations."
"That will not be necessary," you replied. "I am fully fit for duty."
The doctor frowned ever farther. "You are not."
That was when you saw her rubbing her hands… a nervous gesture, her palms smelt of sweat, and her eyes were not focused on you, but in the corner, towards the security camera that was watching her.
"Then why do you keep looking at security cameras? Why are you so afraid of just… telling me what I want to know?"
The doctor, for her part, did not show her fear… even though you could tell she was… utterly terrified. "You wouldn't understand."
You shook your head. "Is someone at ONI blackmailing you to try and remove me from the program, because I know my father is far more direct at those sorts of things, he cannot stand making people do his own dirty work, it's not in his nature?"
The woman turned pale as a ghost. "I-" She then fainted. You checked her and deduced she was in a coma.
The door then opened and Chief Mendez walked through the door flanked by two marines. "Trainee, you are dismissed."
Darn it Mendez… just when things were getting interesting. "Chief, I was-"
"Leave Trainee, it's getting late." His order was clear.
He was handling this now... which was probably for the best, considering your circumstances.
Reward: You have been cleared for duty.
That poor psychologist is now in a vegetative state… completely by her own doing.
Very odd.
-[X]Request to Speak to Dr. Halsey: You wish to speak to the good Doctor, and see how much has changed since your last encounter. Rolled:
1D100 => 94
Doctor Halsey smiled as you entered her office. "Hello Giancarlo, how has your day been?"
"Fine, I can't say it was the greatest… but I'm managing." you stated.
She sat down. "Well, regarding numerous… incidents involving yourself, I wanted to see if you were okay."
"I'm fine doctor… though I must ask… have you taken my advice?" You asked.
The Doctor hid her… you didn't know what from you, but she clearly wasn't… happy. "I have." She responded with a nod. "It was very… enlightening to hear such convictions from a child, even one as smart as you. It puts things into perspective."
"And?" You asked.
"I am going to do my best to make sure the guilt I feel is not in vain… that, I can go to sleep at night knowing that, for all the suffering I caused you, you will save more people than even myself." She replied.
You smiled. "That's good Doctor."
"Though I have a question for you." You gave her a nod, giving her your full attention. "You are smart enough to run away, and get away from this, and get back to your father… Why haven't you?"
You gave her a smile. "There are people that need my help, and I would be violating my oath if I abandoned them."
"What oath would that be?" She asked.
"My oath as a doctor of course." You replied. "Am I dismissed?"
Dr.Halsey for her part seemed… lost at your words. "Yes." She replied.
Reward: Dr. Halsey will do everything in her power to protect the Spartans from ONI.
She believes you are her replacement… and wholeheartedly wishes you to.
She is also taken aback by your words… she didn't think you acted as a doctor.
You have an idea (If the invention roll is 50 or above, you will give it to Dr. Halsey)
Invention Roll:
1D100 => 41
Your design isn't ready… not yet.
Reward: Your invention is nearing completion. (need a 90 for it to be considered ready).
Disaster Roll:
1D100 => 94
Mendez has… suspended an activity…a joint exercise with the Base Marines.
And then he threw you to the wolves.
You have a sneaking feeling Oni agents were involved.
Oh well… it's not like they can try to kill you right now, you're the Navy's property.

And as you guessed, the Nature Reserve is not available...
Well, that's because someone wants us really dead.
