Vespa

She's not human. She'll therefore post to GIO (Giant Insects Online).
Hey, I like this. So. During a party that AMNAU threw in honor of Taylor's trip, one of the spiders, usually sitting at his laptop, got a drunken idea - to create his own site. Everyone else (also drunk) liked the idea and for fun the site was quickly created and everyone corresponded and joked on it for a while (even QA).
I wonder if someone accidentally finds this site and sends a link to PHO?
Maybe someone with talent can write a small omake on this topic in the style of PHO?

Hell of a build up to meeting the prt, which I'm now guessing is going to be at an endbringer fight, if those even happen I can't remember if this is a dead Eidolon story or not.

I have to admit a certain amount of sympathy for Vicky in this case. If you've ever tried to catch a large dragonfly with an insect net you know just how fast and agile they can be. I can recall some really frustrating chases trying to catch large dragonflies sneaking up and ambush tactics sometimes worked, but getting them on the wing was exponentially harder.

In this story Eidolon died at the Canberra Simurgh fight

Yep, he's Sir-Not-Appearing-In-This-Fic as the first time as the word 'Eidolon' shows up is at the end of Chapter 10:

He didn't go into work that day, and by the time, two hours later, they were sitting in front of the TV listening to the news and the sombre announcement that Eidolon had fallen in battle against the Simurgh in Canberra, Australia, the victim of an apparent accidental friendly fire incident from Legend due to the Simurgh zigging when she should have zagged

I thought Dean sees emotions as colors, like an aura around people? It works purely and directly through sight.

"You know I can sense emotions," he said, "Everyone's emotions, like a cloud of colors around them. Can't turn it off. It's just how I see the world."

How is he sensing anything without seeing a faint color? How does he keep sensing stuff with his eyes closed? Why is his power even giving him that much when he's originally restricted to humans? Why would he sense the emotions emitted by a swarm of bees? Because Taylor's awareness is in it?

Since when does his power work through emotional feelings when it's supposed to color the world for him instead?

'think'?

---

Things seem to be coming along nicely...

Poor Vicky. No, it wasn't a Dragon mech she spotted, though, 'dragon' was in the name...

DOUS? Dragonfly Of Unusual Size? Doesn't have... quite the ring of 'HOUS'...

I did like her asking Vicky the time.. But, she didn't add '... for a very important date', to her 'I'm late'...
May I remind the honourable member of the house that she is the usual and proper size for a dragonfly. Just because her family forgot for the last 300 million years and preferred to adopt a slightly more fun-sized shape doesn't mean her current size is not too be considered the correct one any longer.

You do realise it is Kenta that must strumble across this site, as his drunken fingers take him to the wrong place on the Internet?

In particular, he must visit the members list, which has photos, where each includes a ruler, showing why they qualify as 'Giant'...

How does he keep sensing stuff with his eyes closed?
Because he sees a faint light, where there should be darkness? His Power makes stuff appear in his brain, does it say anywhere his eyes must be open so his Power functions. It is a vial Power, after all...

Also:
Article:
When it came to his teammates and the PRT staff, he could read their emotions and he could sense the degree to which they cared and didn't care.

Dean on wiki.

And... AU. Taylor-Varga Dean could sense two sets of emotions from Taylor, but that became more-and-more... faint, over time. This Dean can sense Taylor's emotions from all the BB bugs.

Maybe there should be an alt-Chris version of Dean, who always figures out Taylor's secrets, but doesn't, ever, dare tell anyone? :)

Mmm, the WWM thing is either pure and simple corporate espionage or it could be one of the many fronts for the late Calvert's (Cauldron) benefactors

Asking Lisa about the dossiers is a toss-up, because if she included her father's (and her) documentation among that documentation, although Lisa could find relevant information, she could also get an idea of the relationship between Vespa and Taylor

Although in addition to that, apparently Dean is able to perceive Taylor's emotions, even through each of her insects, which gives him strange readings to interpret, so far only benign and positive, but if, let's say Taylor and her father (to whom she still hasn't told him about WWM), found out that Annette's death hadn't been an accident; I imagine Dean having a panic attack, feeling all of Taylor's fury, amplified through all of her bugs (him and the rest of the Precogs in the other cities where she already has influence/presence)

And seeing that Taylor apparently succeeded in finding certain bugs she was looking for, as Vicky can attest, with the weird encounter she had with the super dragonfly created/modified by Taylor, although I can't imagine Vicky talking about it on PHO (because it would imply admitting in public that she broke some rules), and she commenting on it afterwards, at a moment where it would create more impact and horror (like Dean or another Ward, finding out that there is a third super bug out there)

Maybe with Taylor bringing Lucy, Amy and especially Vicky, some souvenir from that trip, (extra points if it's something indirectly related to bugs and dragonflies)

Brief (compared to two chapters ago) and waiting to see what else happens

Good luck and keep it up

Did you just ignore the quote in my comment, taken directly from the story, that explains how his power uses sight?

Why would it being a vial power change anything?

Where does it say anything he "sees" a faint light? All he does is "feel" something in the air.

I take it you've never closed your eyes, and still been able to see light through your eyelids? Besides, he's not actually "seeing emotions as colors". That's just how the shard is feeding the information to his brain.

That's the fucking point. The shard uses his sense of sight to relay information. So how does he "feel" these emotions when he's not using his eyes?

Please point out where Dean saw any color with his eyes closed.

Please point out where he didn't perceive the emotions as colors? Just because he didn't mention faint, barely there, colors in his internal dialog doesn't mean they weren't there. And why assume the shard which isn't actually connected to his eyes at all is transmitting the information through the eyes instead of directly into the brain?

Or, and hear me out here, since this is an AU his power might have expressed a bit differently then in canon.

Past a certain point, this author defines the details of Dean's Power.

Anything not wrote by Wildbow, in the original 'Worm' text (plus footnotes) is AU, and, yes, I include all the Wildbow 'WoG' in that. Assuming anything else is... unwise - trying to figure-out 'Worm' is hard enough work, anyways.

I don't recall any mention of 'color' (or 'colour') in 'Worm', or Dean seeing auras. But, few years now since I read it, and I've no intention of repeating the experience. The article I quoted is (from the wiki) a quote from 'Infrared 19.9'.

I'll not say anything further on this subject.

Are you asking me to prove a negative? Seriously?

Do you not make any difference between "see" and "feel"?

Do you understand that all senses use the brain but do so in different ways? Why would he talk about "feeling" when his power expresses itself in colors that he can "see"?

Hence me asking these questions in my inital post. If the author then tells us "yes, in this AU Dean's power works differently", then everything's fine. But until then this is an unexplained change.

I quoted that relevant part, I told you it's a quote directly from Worm and you still don't acknowledge it?

"You know I can sense emotions," he said, "Everyone's emotions, like a cloud of colors around them. Can't turn it off. It's just how I see the world."

Ok, go to Interlude 3 and do a word search for "cloud". If that doesn't convince you that this is how Dean's power works in canon, then I don't know what else I'm supposed to do here.

His power doesn't connect to the ocular nerves. Thus it can't actually be using his eyes to transmit the data. It's putting the information directly in his brain, no visual stimulus needed. That he perceives things as working though sight is a different matter entirely. People have been known to see and hear things that aren't there, because their brain manufactures the stimulus. Not their eyes or hears picking things up that nobody else does, but their brain manufacturing the audio or visual stimulus without the use of the eyes or ears.

But even if you want to disregard that, you're also disregarding something else critical. This is an AU, and not Worm canon. that means if Dean's power works slightly differently, that's okay. If I'm writing a Worm fanfic, and decide the official way Coil's power works is stupid (which it is) and disregard that to use something based more on what's actually depicted? Then in my story Coil's power works that way rather then how it officially does in canon. If I decide that in this story Tattletale's assumed name is Lisa Notserah Danceington, then that's what her assumed name is in the story.

It is 41.237, dude. Everybody knows that.
Of course, how did I forget that? I feel like I should be blaming a cauldron but I'm not sure how a big pot could be responsible.

She's not human. She'll therefore post to GIO (Giant Insects Online).
Hosted on small computers that her insects hide in walls. Although it would be amusing if she had a rep show up at the nearest datacenter asking if they could partially pay hosting in honey.

Are you trying to have Lung defeated by heart failure? Because this is how you have Lung fall by way of a massive heart attack.

"In other news today Lung has announced that the ABB will be rebranding as a wholly law abiding public benefit corporation operating under PRT and Protectorate oversight. Asked about the change Assisting Brockton Bay chairman Kenta only cringed, muttered something about hornets and not enough alcohol, then thanked Panacea for treatment and advice before ending the interview."

Don't believe those ovipositor enlargement ads, they're a scam.
And don't think you're safe because you're a drone. The pheromone ads claiming to make you more attractive to your queen are just as scammy.

Ok, I've got to ask... did you read this before you clicked on "Post reply"? Because this changes or contributes nothing to the discussion.

Of course it's in his brain (as I have pointed out previously), but he's still "seeing" it. It doesn't matter if the visual stimulus comes from his eyes or is simply shoved into his brain by his power, it's how he senses emotions in others.

He doesn't get a feeling that someone is angry, he sees clouds of color floating around them and knows which color connects to which emotion. If he doesn't look at the person, he can't sense their emotions. If he closes his eyes, he can't sense emotions because he can't see the person anymore.

Call it arbitrary or not, but that's how it works. He looks at someone, sees their colorful aura and then can tell "oh, they are sad." What he cannot do (canonically anyway) is simply feel the emotions in an area, especially an empty one. Even assuming that his power starts to work even though what he's looking at is not a human, he'd have to see clouds of color first.

This is an AU, and not Worm canon. that means if Dean's power works slightly differently, that's okay.

I literally wrote about that in my post, why do you think repeating that to me was necessary?

Do you believe I'm attacking the author and now you feel the need to jump in to protect him or what is going on?

All I'm asking for is clarification and "AU change" is a perfectly acceptable answer. It's just not your place to give it because you're not the author of the story.

And their flight abilities were nuts too. Dragonflies held the record for the fastest flying insects on the planet at something just under sixty miles an hour, the highest altitude at nearly four miles, one of the longest duration migration flights at more than three thousand seven hundred miles, could hover, fly sideways and backwards as easily as forwards, and generally were extremely impressive in the air. Of course she was going to add that to her library…
This remind me of

May I remind the honourable member of the house that she is the usual and proper size for a dragonfly. Just because her family forgot for the last 300 million years and preferred to adopt a slightly more fun-sized shape doesn't mean her current size is not too be considered the correct one any longer.
Without shard physics-breaking shennaningans, dragonfly of prehistorical size could not live and fly in current atmosphere, with much smaller amount of oxygen in the air, as compared to (some of) prehistory.

"You know I can sense emotions," he said, "Everyone's emotions, like a cloud of colors around them. Can't turn it off. It's just how I see the world."
1) "You know I can sense emotions" - sense emotions. Not see. Sense.
2) "like a cloud of colors around them" - correct me if I'm wrong, but that's a comparison/analogy. Which would make sense if you have a sense that other people, without your power, don't have and you want to describe it to them.
3) "It's just how I see the world" - that could be either a literal 'it's a part of how I see' or a 'how I perceive' without the character using the verb 'perceive' because he's already in the 'see' analogy.

If the atmosphere has an isue with Taylor's dragonfly size then the atmosphere is welcometo file a complaint and make an appointment to see Taylor and state its case.

May I also remind my right honourable friend that these are not shard shenanigans and her shard is not aware how Taylor accomplishes her Taylor shenanigans.
