Vespa

And so the Great Terror/Confusion of Brockton Bay at the hands of giant mutant insects begins, all whilst Taylor shows QA all the fun ways they can bend the natural order until it screams for mercy

"But no one has reported seeing it that I'm aware of, and Vista said it was quite audible some distance away," her deputy Mike Renick commented with a frown. "Either it's sneakier than we realized, has only been in that location once, or it might have a Stranger ability too. Which is… not comforting to consider."
Or it's solid evidence in favor of it being the result of a Changer power. Which is obvious enough that one of them really should have pointed it out.

Well. Emily and the rest of the PRT and Protectorate are all doing their best to avoid needing the brown pants. Mostly unsuccessfully if I had to offer a guess. Love how the entomologist is far mor fascinated than terrified. Though that's kinda typical of people who study things most everyone else finds gross/horrifying.

Vista, with some biological nudges from Pan-pan finally decides to vent her frustrations on an ear that at least is willing to listen. Though Panacea seems a little distracted by her interest in the Giant Hornet girl.

Taylor… crab raves appear to be in Brockton Bay's near future. If they're lucky.

At least QA is getting all sorts of fascinating [DATA] she can show off to everyone else. QA really does have the [BEST-HOST].

When I first saw the title of the work, and the author, I was expecting lizards riding Italian mopeds.

Not disappointed, though.

With the way Emily and the others are reacting, the first time a PRT person intereacts with her in Vespa form, she's going to enjoy having some degree of armor ... Emily at the moment is sounding a little bit like Tagg in what she'd like to do ...

Well Emily is going to have a very very bad day when Taylor's other forms gets spotted in public. she's absolutely going to think biotinker at that point xD

1. Guest Omake - Get Stick-bugged New
Putting this on here as well.

Quite a lot of them, in fact. A fair number of different species of spider, several scorpion varieties, stick insects

You've forced an Omake into my brain and just like QA it is desperate for realization.

Chubster down, CD-5, Shielder, …

The names from his wrist kept coming as Assault alternated between wading and running through the water back towards the battle. He hadn't made it to cover during the last wave. Luckily he's powers were more than enough to let him redirect himself onto a building and out of the brunt of most of it. He could hear the fight up ahead. The landscape around him appearing more and more wrecked, rubble strewn and flipped and distorted hunks of metal lined the former roadway.

Finally he could see the big bad fish man in the distance, a few more blocks and he'd be back in the fight. He flagged down a passing flyer when a deep vibrating drone filled the air, strong enough to cause him to start building kinetic energy. Assault jumped towards the flyer. Just as the cape grabbed ahold of him, the flyer locking his elbows under Assault's pits, Ethan turned his head catching something out of the corner of his eye. An absolutely massive green pillar was forming, about a quarter a mile to his left, quickly shooting skyward at incredible speeds.

"Wha-" Assault was cut off as his new winged friend shouted directly into Assaults ear, pointing to the right, "WHAT THE FUCK ARE THOSE!"

Ethan's gaze shifted towards four more massive towers forming right of him. His vision tracked them as the seemed to pause briefly before changing angle heading towards one another.

Then a shadow was cast across the road the were hovering 10 meters above. Looking directly up, Ethan now saw that the SIX protrusions were meeting with a massive segmented beam at least 200 meters above the city.

Unknown Parahuman power detected please standby

"Get us out from under it!" Assault yelled to his flyer.

"Already fucking on it." The teen grunted above him. Shit why is there a kid here.

They were climbing fast, to the left of whatever this new thing was. It towered over a portion of the city easily a mile long and if standing at its full height almost has tall. At its front, towards the bay were two massive eyes below two antenna that were sticking outwards vertically. The vibrating drone that had present for the past 30 or so seconds fell silent as the creature fully formed.

"Is.. is that a stick bug?" Assault murmured to himself in disbelief.

The creature then began to move. Its front section tilting down at such a speed the rain around it was pushed outwards away from its body. As it angled its front half downwards, its front right foreleg seemed to be moving inwards and backwards before stilling.

Another much louder drone was emitted from the massive bug's mouth as its eyes hovered over where Assault had been heading just moments before.

All parahuman evacuate CD-4. Repeat, all parahuman evacuate CD-4

From their vantage point Ethan could see the capes rushing away from Leviathan as the Endbringer stood still, looking upwards towards this new threat.

After a moment the droning stopped, the moment it did the right foreleg of the insect flicked forwards toward Leviathan at such an intense speed the buildings adjacent to its path stared to crumble inwards as if it had created a vacuum just by moving. If Assaults perception of movement hadn't been enhanced by his powers he'd have missed the moment the clawed tip of the bug's forelimb connected with Leviathan. As it was, he was able to witness the full glory as the superior mass and velocity of this gargantuan creature rammed its way halfway through the Endbringer's form before sending the bastard shooting off into the distance at unbelievable speeds.

Ethan's mouth was agape, everything around him was silent aside from the rain and wind both of which seemed to be lightening quickly.

A gurgling trilling sound came from The Stick Bug, he capitalized the name in his mind, as it moved its head skywards and it's forelimb back to its side.

Leviathan repelled. Repeat. Leviathan repelled.

As the sky began to rapidly clear above them, something else seemed began to form in the sky directly above the bug that had just saved the city.

Shapes of what appeared to be dark particle formed into large words hovering over the insects back.

Get Stickbugged

Just as the words fully formed the savior of the bay began to move side to side in some sort of dance. It's trilling picking up again.

Assault angled his head towards the flyer still holding him before asking. "Am I…did I get a concussion or are you seeing a huge bug dancing too?"

The slack-jawed teen cape holding him just nodded and croaked out, "N-no I see it too."

Just watched Zefrank's youtube video on parasitoid wasps. Most insects don't creep me out that badly, but that video had several moments that give me goosebumps. Giant hornets are terrifying, but some of the other creatures she has access to is far far more unsettling.

I love his videos, but that one was more than a little creepy to me.

Mind controlling symbiotic viruses, lobotomzing venoms, and when eating their way out of a caterpillar they deliberately avoid critical organs to keep the victim alive longer. Some of the wasps were so small when compared to moths that they looked like almost like flies to a human.

The professor shrugged, spreading his hands. "I'm afraid those questions are out of my area of expertise, Director, so I have no answers for you. I don't know enough about Parahuman abilities to do more than guess, although I can't see any plausible way she's not the result of such. Even a parallel world would have to follow the physical laws ours does, in all probability, and an insect that large isn't technically possible in that case. Technical impossibilities that nevertheless exist appear to fall more into your organization's remit." He smiled at her, looking like he was finding all this quite entertaining in some bizarre fashion.

"An import from a parallel world seems to be even less likely," he added. "Again, it's not impossible based on our current understanding of the multi-world theory, but we can be certain that the only other world we've got direct evidence for the existence of doesn't contain an insect this large, if only for the reasons the professor laid out." He shook his head. "Physics doesn't allow for it, and as I understand the science, neither does biology, which therefore implies the… super-hornet… is not a naturally occurring creature. Leaving Changer or Case 53 as the more reasonable explanations."
Question does it make sense for the PRT to rule out alien (alt earth evolution) biology? After all if you aren't aware of that shards exist then you must assume powers are biological. Which sure doesn't make sense but the other option is an outside source or magic and that logic is discouraged.

As a result, Earth Bet has to know there understand of physics is somehow wrong and that biology can do impossible things. So reasonably speaking they cannot discount the idea that an alternate earth somehow had bugs that develop inheritable para-biology to allow them to grow far beyond what conventional physic can support.

Yes the idea is horrifying but they can't just dismiss it becase it doesn't fit with the laws of physics. After all those laws are plainly wrong in the face of parahuman impossibilities.

'Oh, yes. This could be a lot of fun,' she thought as she tried to remember things from one of her computer textbooks. 'I bet it'll work…'

Smiling to herself, she put the notebook and pen down, then moved her current jumping drider body to retrieve a different crab, before getting back to work with a cheerful feeling that life was going well.
it's always amusing seeing a reference to the fact that crabs are technically turing complete

Question does it make sense for the PRT to rule out alien (alt earth evolution) biology?
Occam's razor. If it's actually alien biology, it's not, in fact, an insect. If it isn't an insect, then why does it look exactly like not just earth insects generally, but a specific type with known characteristics that it appears to be imitating? That level of coincidence naturally occurring is actually less likely, in a world with parahumans at least, than powers-related bull.

She actually like Vista
'liked'?

PRT is PRT. Dedicated academic is dedicated. News at 10. (Lizards at 11.)

Nice to see Kid Win making an effective contribution. I can see Alt-Chris making a very brief visit to this alt-world.

Interesting that this Amy is prepared to mess with brains, on some level... She couldn't stop anxiety attacks otherwise... Her care for Missy, who she considers a friend, is a good sign.

We can speculate whether... Queen Shaper is whispering to Amy about investigating 'Hornet Girl'...

Taylor is doing fun research. Crabs are helping. The really good sub-dermal armour is go?

Just what is Taylor up to in messing with her eyesight???

2011 is a bit early for common computer books to be going full-on Baysian math and neural nets for AI, probably particularly on Earth Bet. But, people at universities were certainly doing neural net research in the late 1980s, so, who knows what she's found?
