Underneath the twisted blue moon

Turn 6 : Summer 1986
Turn 6 : Summer 1986

Rumor Mill:

[] Ava's Scottish neighbors are doing something. Whatever it is, the scale of it is massive, and it perturbed the weather patterns in the entire area. Then, there are reports of golden dragons...

[X] For some reason, there are words of foreign luxury goods being traded in the territory, without Ava having been made aware of this. Considering some of them are luxury goods, this probably needs to be looked into.

[] Africa is on fire. Even more than usual.

Chocolate. Dace remarried to secure an exclusivity agreement with the head of an agro-industrial empire from the Northern Union, for Chocolate. When the country didn't have any industry to speak of, itself. She was already receiving reports of rather aggressive take over operations from said industrial.

Ava considered drinking, but that would make her no better than Myriam.

Time to start doing some damage control.

Actions:

Diplomacy 2 (ruler) + 2 (advisors)
[X][Andrei] Diplomatic ties : Scotland selected.
Rolled 88 + 20 (sneaky snake) + 100 (presence) = 228 (versus Nat1) = Tier 4 Success
Andrei Bulldozed through the opposing diplomat. Not only did he get an official non-aggression pact out of this, but he even learned some very interesting information. Augustus Bulstrode was looking into taming animals, and he had ordered a very rare breed of white tigers to be brought here. However, due to the diplomat's personal inclinations, a breeding pair has been set aside and kept in secret for his... Enjoyment. Andrei, ignoring his growing disgust, decided to blackmail the man into giving the poor creatures over.

-Non-Aggression Pact with Scotland
-You may now recruit white tigers and build Tiger Dens.

[X][Anemone] Romantia: Charles Williams.
Rolled 91 + 20 (sneaky snake) + 50 (manipulation): Pass, +85 to Ava when interacting with the NU
Apparently, Mr. Williams has a wife he dotes very much on, and Anemone somehow managed to enter her good graces. This has potential to be further explored, but at the moment, said wife leaving a good word to her husband may very much be what's needed to tip the scales in Ava's favor.
-+85 to Ava when interacting with the NU

[X] International relations: Northern Union
Rolled 30 + 85 (Romantia) + 70 (Leadership) + 20 (sneaky snake) = 205 T2 Success.
The meeting went well. Of course, having the leader of the other party have a positive opinion of you helps a lot.

-+2 NU relationship.

[X] Party!
Rolled 64 + 85 (presence) = 149 T2 Success.
Another year, another party. Ava already has people beginning to ask if this would become a yearly occurrence or not. Ava is not opposed to it, but one never knows when the situation changed. Balthazar was strangely absent that night, so she used the occasion to talk and try to get to know the woman who's had more assassination attempts against her person in the last two years than Ava did in her entire life. Anemone looks like a sweet and gentle person, hopelessly smitten, but sweet. She soon regretted it, as she heard lots of details about Dace she would have preferred to ignore.

Ava supposes love truly makes one blind.

Anemone SL unlocked.

[X] Mingle with the populace.
57 + 85 (presence) = 142 Success.
Following the success of the party, Ava decided to try and go out to have people see her. It was rather... Odd. Seeing the city with her own eyes. Most of the time, she only saw pictures of ravaged lands from the world outside, tales of war, famine, and disease. The city was... Peaceful, and happy. This was odd. And maybe the tiniest bit unnerving. Still, people loved Ava, even if the disfigured part of her face was hidden by an exquisitely decorated mask, and her hair barely reached her chin.

+10 Recruitment bonus

[X]Coup de Grâce
62 + 25 (agents) + 75 (leadership) = 162 T2 success.

Half of it was revenge, the other was concern for the country's stability. She would never forget William's schemes and the long-lasting consequences of it. In this new world, dissension would mean death for all, and this is the one thing she refuses to allow. Most of the factions agreed. As for the recalcitrant ones...

Well, everyone has a few skeletons to hide.

-No more Factions within the territory.

Stewardship 2 (ruler) + 1 (advisors)
[X][Howland] All hands on deck :Build Improved farms (Perfeddwlad)
63 + 70 (entrepreneurship) = 133 : Success.
Howland, despite his claims, is skilled in business that isn't military-centric. He is just too gruff to deal with the nonsense of "Those darned paper-pushers whose only pleasure in life is tae ruin everythin' fur th' honest, hard-workin' folks! ". Thankfully, he and the local farmers are a match made in heaven. The hard part now was to get him away from the little gatherings he now held, where they all complained about everything and reminisced the 'good old times'.

To be fair, so did she, from time to time.

-Farms build in Perfeddwlad.

[X] Build secret project: National Transit System (Infrastructure-type Secret Project)
22 + 80 (entrepreneurship) = 102 : Pass

While she did not have much time to spend on this project, proper infrastructure and easy ways to move from city to city were her two biggest long-term priorities. Therefore, sending the resources and people ahead of time was a good solution. After all, one never knows what could happen next year, or the next, so better make sure everything is paid for in advance, to avoid complications. Things are stable now, but the ability to move quickly could save lives.

All necessary resources to start the project have been sent. 1 action used. The National Transit System is beginning construction in Gwallawgyson Dinas.

[X] Extra action: Blocus
Nat1 Sharon save: 56 + 80 (entrepreneurship) = 136 : Pass

Ava was just about to sign an order regarding her newest annoyance when Sharon suddenly opened the door, dragging Urie by the back of his robes, looked at the paper in Ava's hand and jumped.

Literally.

She landed, her belly on the desk, ripping the paper off Ava's hand and ripped it into pieces, screaming about mutant pandas and how chocolate was the source of all evil on Earth.

Urie just snored.

It took a bit of time for the woman to calm down, but Ava finally learned that Sharon's foray in divination was successful and Ava approving that particular set of orders would lead to a catastrophe. While she didn't trust Urie, Sharon's work has been nothing less than exemplary, so Ava decided to trust the woman who acted on her orders.

-Catastrophe averted.
-No industrial slots will be bought out this turn.

[X] Look for Advisor
87 + 85 (presence) + 10 (mingle) = 182 T2 success.
Ava did, indeed, find an advisor, but... See End of Year for details.

Martial 1 (ruler) + 1 (advisors)
[X][Alphonse] Greenhorns unite!
50 + 80 (combat) = 130: Pass

Alphonse has a habit. This habit is to get into death fights with failed, rabid golems that are to be scrapped. This is a bad habit, but it does bring results.

Alphonse gains 500 Experience.
Alphonse is now a Hero unit.

[X] Recruit Advisor
53 + 85 (presence) + 10 (mingle) = success

When Ava saw him, she immediately decided to have him become her successor. What was it with this year's recruits who didn't choose the right spot for their abilities? This man was clearly a Malfoy!

A Malfoy! In the military!

Ava never heard a better joke this year.

-Recruited Adalbert Pegasus, placed him as a Steward instead.

[X] Build Tiger Den. (Baradwys Mynydd)
2

Intrigue 1 (ruler) + 2 (advisors)
[X][Dace] Sneaky Snake
Rolled 91 : Pass

When he wants to, Dace is good at information gathering. Plus, his wife has contacts. Now, if only she didn't come with so many problems attached...

+ 20 to actions that take place out of the territory.

[X][Balthazar] Apple-Colored Serpent: British government.
24 + 90 (stealth) = 114 pass (first of many, many checks.)

After reading a rather alarming report about the state of London, thanks to Andrei bullying the details out of a soon-to-be-fired Scottish diplomat, Ava decided something had to be done.

Cults were flourishing, violence and theft were on the rise, and the minister of magic, James Potter, was apparently experimenting on the hybridization of undead and living people. If this wasn't disturbing enough, it seems that he already succeeded at reanimation, as Lily Evans, who Urie insisted was undead and in Babel when it fell, was to be his First Lady.

Either she was a fake, and James Potter was a delusional, unstable fool, or she was the real deal, and James Potter instantly became too dangerous to let live.

They just got rid of their undead problem, they didn't need another one here!

Which is why she went to the only one she could trust with the job, who was currently brooding because he failed to assassinate her Diplomat, again.

This was her life, where assassinations are a casual thing to be laughed about.

Thankfully, Balthazar was enthused at the idea and promised to come up with something to explain his absence.
[X] Cleaning up the House
52 + 35 (perception) + 8 (Nordlending) + 6 (Nordlending) = 101: Tier 2 success

Ava found a few people who were answering to the Factions, but they were dealt with. Balthazar also brought her some British spies, then asked when was the next date.

Why was this her life? All she wanted was to become rich, roll into jewels and have a bunch of hot guys waiting on her.

She did, sort of, have all that, but not in a fun way, you know?

At least, she's got less work to do, since she's found herself a replacement.

[X] Investigate: State of the Land of the Dead in the South (6 Agents)

It disappeared. No traces at all. Even the bones and metallic remains were non-existent. Just empty, grassy fields surrounding empty ruins.

Ava felt something akin to dread looking at those pictures.

[X] Sabotage: Factions (7 agents)

They found enough blackmail material for Ava's plan to work. Good job!

Balthazar preened like the proud peacock he was.

Learning 1 (ruler) + 1 (advisors)
[X][Gregory] It's just common sense, you know?
[X] Recruit Advisor
38 + 85 (presence) = 123 : Pass

For once, the advisor was what Ava expected. A tall, willowy woman with dark hair, eyes, and pale skin. She was quiet and soft-spoken, but there was something to her that made her noticeable.

She seemed competent enough in the scientific domain, but Ava saw her eye the Gwallawg library with disdain.

-Recruited Selena Jackson

[X] Open a new academy
32 It's just common sense you know? 63 + 90 (Greg Research) = 153 : Tier 2 success

A few years have passed, and Ava decided it was time to have children be educated properly.

Except she quickly realized schools didn't pop out of thin air, or because you threw money at the idea. Strangely enough, it was Greg who appeared, arms filled with pamphlet belonging to elite schools who were destroyed now, and helped her select features she wanted here. In the end, and after much arguing in which the man showed a remarkable amount of backbone compared to his usual cowardly predisposition, they finally managed to hammer the beginnings of a plan and, months later, Rosewood Institute, a massive school complex that was planned to handle both Elementary and Middle School level education, was inaugurated.

People talked and newspapers blabbed, but really, Ava insisted, having an Olympics-grade swimming pool was extremely important!

-Rosewood Institute built in Gwallawgysol Dinas

Mysticism 1 (ruler) + 2 (advisors)
[X][SU] Forewarned is forearmed
[X][Melusine] Secret mission!
44 +
[X] Anchor hunting: Chaos
50: No contestant, Pass.

The place was a right mess, the people sent to harvest it said. Yet again, the fact the Nexus lied at the bottom of the sea, where Dyfed used to be, explained so many things about that hellhole that Ava was relieved at the news.

-Obtained Chaos anchor.

[X] Cornucopia / Cannibalize, if hunting is a success.
29 + 15 (research) = 44 : Failure

Ava didn't even manage to get her staff to scratch it. The cube just sits, glowing orange, as if to taunt her. Which it very well could.

-Chaos Anchor still intact.

[X] Cornucopia
51 + 35 (perception) + 4 (Nordlending) + 12 (Nordlending.) = 102 : Tier 2 success.

She very well could have missed it. Nearly did. But rumors never failed her before, so she decided on a whim to have someone investigate.

When they came back, it was with the news of a ruined laboratory, and an old, rusty brazier that seemed to be generating an endless amount of sulfur. Interesting. Still, it reeked of rotten egg.

Gregory seemed to be happy to take it off Ava's hands to study it.

-Obtained minor artifact:
Brazier of Sulfur
Class: Minor Artifact
Slot: Misc (currently in Gregory's possession)
Effect: When carried by someone, will produce 365 sulfur per turn.
Part of the [Cornucopia] set

Willpower 1 (ruler) + 1 (advisors)
[X][Jeremiah] I need a Hero
87 + 55 (defensive spells) = 140 : Tier 2 success.

Jeremiah was glad for the opportunity to get out and explore and already has a promising lead. However, it will take him a year to explore. Results on turn 7.

[X] Recruit Advisor
83 + 85 (presence) = 168

The moment she saw him, she knew he would never last. After he left her office, Ava rubbed her temples, and added another name to her 'council relationship chart'.

Underneath it, she added: 'soon to be murdered'.

She needed a raise. She wasn't even paid for this.

[X] Kingdom Come I
48 + 30 (Lore) = 78 : Failure.

She should be more upset about missing information on the Old kingdom and the no doubt dangerous artifacts it left behind, but at that point, failure meant she had less to do. Which was okay in her book because the newest report about how one of the Canadian-owned shops encountered a terrible case of manure explosion when it was supposed to be a candy shop arrived at her desk.

This was Balthazar. She just knew it.

Craidd Time

Craidd Gwallawg was an upset boy. Granted, he had reasons to be, but that left him prone to throwing tantrums from time to time, however, they were less violent than what they used to be, and Andrei usually could corral that energy towards something more constructive. As he was growing up, however, it was decided he would have to begin learning the ropes, especially seeing as he was much smarter than your average child.

LAURA LEI: Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Laura Lei.

LEI: 5 years after Brexit, the British Isles have reappeared. Initial reports paint a bleak picture of depopulated cities and a devastated people. From NPR's Paris Bureau, Will Martin has the story.

MARTIN: London Bridge has fallen down. This is just one of the landmarks destroyed over the past few years, as magical war and incident destroyed picturesque towns and depopulated the United Kingdowm.

DE REGE: It's a warzone. There's too many people dead, and we're still sweeping for bodies from previous attacks, let alone yesterday's.

MARTIN: That was Business Secretary Mona De Rege, at the Tower of London. London burned no less than five times over the past few years. And in an almost feudal twist, the former Government and Ministry of Magic currently only controls part of England proper.

DE REGE: We currently lack the resources to expand, secure, and feed beyond our current borders.

MARTIN: For better for worse, Wizards lead all three major regional governments. James Potter is Prime Minister, Dace Gwallawg is de facto governor of Wales, while duarchs Augustus Bulstrode and Joseph MacMillan control most of Scotland.

MARTIN: As for the island of Ireland, De Rege described it as a corrupted wasteland.

DE REGE: — large swathes of land covered in black, oily liquid, covered in deformed creatures, with cities in ruins and no signs of human life. This is an improvement.

MARTIN: Of the three primary regional governments, England's is the worst off. Of a 1980 population of forty-six million, nearly six times the Scotland and Wales combined, less than fifteen million remain.

UNIDENTIFIED SOURCE 1: It was— still *is* worse than the War. I remember the Blitz. Then, we had enough food and warning. Everyone lost someone, but not this many.

MARTIN: When asked about looting, De Rege shrugs.

DE REGE: When this all started, people stepped up. It's now a non-issue. At this point, we're more worried about famine.

MARTIN: Still, people remain optimistic.

UNIDENTIFIED SOURCE 1: As long as we survive, this too shall pass.

Turn 6 : Autumn 1986 - Spring 1987

Autumn 1986

The first months were hard. Craidd fell back into his bad habits, but in his mind, he was justified.

How dare he?!
Why?!
He never even says anything to me anymore and now he does that!

Such were his thoughts about his father's remarriage. Worse even was when Craidd heard from listening in on the maids' conversations that Dace was about to have new children.

Said children were, according to the rumors, superior to him in every way.

It burnt. The jealousy burnt so much. He hated it.

So he did the only thing he knew, he screamed, he lashed out, and he clung to Sarah even more. He had to bat away a few annoying flies while he was at it, but he felt grim satisfaction in knowing that the Idiot wouldn't be angry at him. He was a child after all. It couldn't be helped after all.

One evening, however, after another lesson that ended with him throwing a massive tantrum and him being scolded and sent to bed early, something different happened. When he woke up, it was nighttime. Moonlight was streaming in the room and, on the opposite side of the room, where his pile of plushes was laying, just in front of the window, was an ornate chair. Sitting on it was a man clad in a black suit and wearing a black half-mask. He had blond hair and fair skin, but as the moonlight was illuminating him from above, his eyes were shrouded in the mask's darkness.

The man's legs were crossed and he was leaning on his hand, elbow on the armrest, observing him.

"You're finally awake. I thought we would be starting without you."

... What?

Completely ignoring Craidd, he got up smoothly, a cane with the head of a silver dog appearing out of thin air in his hand. He then raised it, showing the door to the boy.

"After you, young man."

Rolls: 65 + 20 (common sense) = 85 : Failure

Craidd stared for a moment before getting up, putting his slippers on, walking up to the door and opening it. He wouldn't be there if he was a bad guy after all!

The darkened hallways were gloomy and slightly scary, they were echoes when they walked, no wind, and it was cold, but the man in black made some lights fly around them. They looked like little stars and were fairly warm to the touch, like Sarah's fire! The man walked in silence next to him towards another wing of the manor. Now that he thought about it, some things were a bit odd, there should be guards around, shouldn't there?

As they finally arrived in front of a door, the man finally spoke again.

"You have made a lot of noise recently. Was it perhaps, due to your 'father' remarrying without talking to you first?" He asked with an odd tone in his voice. Almost cheery, but too detached for it to be right.

Craidd refused to answer.

"I see. And I may not be exactly wrong in guessing you do not get along with the woman herself?"

He... Isn't wrong, no. The man's lips twisted in a joyless smile.

"Indeed." There was a moment of silence before he opened his mouth again. " Then how about we make this a bit more... entertaining? If you do not want this woman to be your new mother..." The blond masked man talked to him and hit the door three times with the dog's head on his cane. Before Craidd could react, it opened.

The lights on the wall flickered on, dying the halls in golden light and the guards seemingly appeared out of thin air as the temperature went up. It took him a few seconds to realize who opened the door. It was Anemone, her hair down and wearing a white nightdress that reached her ankles.

"Craidd? Did something happen?"

Craidd didn't know. He felt a bit disoriented, to be honest, and the woman, after looking at him picked him up and put him on her hip.

"Let's get you back to bed, you should be sleeping."

The boy yawned and nodded in agreement, leaning into the woman's side. She was nicer than that woman...

"... Then just find one yourself, and tell her so." The man smirked as he melted into the darkness, seconds before the door opened.

Craidd yawned once again and muttered in Anemone's neck.

"I'd prefer it if you were my mother."

Annabelle, who was about to open his bedroom door, froze entirely, to the point she didn't even breathe anymore.

"A-Ah? Is that so?" Her voice was higher than usual, but Craidd just shifter to make himself more at ease in this position.

"Uh-huh. That woman is bad. A fake." Completely not how mothers should be.

Anemone shuddered.

"This... Is a problem, isn't it?" She finally answered as she unfroze, opening the door and tucking him in. There was a very wide smile on her face now. She then wondered for a moment, tapping her cheek with a finger, before leaning in and kissing his forehead. "Sleep easy my little prince, Annie's going to deal with that problem, okay?" She then leaned away, an eye closed and a mischievous expression on her face. " It'll be our little secret, okay?"

Craidd thought for a bit then nodded. This made her smile more nicely.

"Now behave, will you?"

He didn't quite know why, but he felt, deep within his bones, that that woman wouldn't be a problem for much longer now.

Winter 1986

Craidd felt a lot better after that night, even though he learned that that woman had given birth to three sons, and people were now whispering about succession problems.

Alright, that was a lie, Craidd was still in a bad mood, but at least he felt a bit more cooperative now. It took a lot of coaxing from Sarah, but he ended up agreeing to actually try to behave during his lessons.

Craidd had fun running around and carried Crow around to get more familiar. Crow still can't fly.

+5 combat, Crow still doesn't like Craidd.
In the end, Craidd wondered if he really should have. His tutors in Diplomacy and Arts and Crafts were crowing in pleasure, for he apparently was skilled in Diplomacy, and talented in Learning matters. Though the latter also told him he was merely average when it came to crafting, so he may, instead, be skilled elsewhere...

More importantly! Craidd had a Problem.

A stupidly tall, stupidly grinning, stupidly stupid Problem.

Andrei was trying to take Sarah's attention off him! And it was working! Craidd didn't understand why; clearly, he was more interesting than flower bouquets and sweets and medieval weaponry, right?

Something had to be done, Craidd fumed in silence as he watched Sarah laugh at something the Idiot said, and he just knew who to ask.

This is how he found himself in front of Anemone, who erupted in giggles when he explained the situation.

"Oh, little Prince, this is natural at that age to try and make friends." Anemone cooed, lifting him up, placing him on her laps and hugging him." It's just another kind of friend. Besides..." She stopped, before pouting in thought. "It's not like Sarah and Andrei are like Dace and that woman, right?" the venomous tone she used when talking about that woman made it very clear she didn't like her at all, and Craidd found himself agreeing, which led to Anemone's smile widening.

"Then, your problem is that you feel like they won't pay attention to you anymore, right?"

Craidd couldn't care less about the Idiot, but Sarah was his nanny!

The woman giggled again, before patting him on the head and puffing up her chest.

"Well then, let me show you a few things you can do to attract her attention, alright~?"

Spring 1987

It worked! Annie's advice worked!

Now Sarah always took him with her and he could bat the Idiot away if he became too friendly with his nanny! He just had to 'appeal' to her 'maternal instincts' by 'acting cute' around Sarah!

Craidd felt very proud of himself.

Then, one day, as Sarah was busy "throwing the trash out" (why in the world would she say that while carrying a sleeping man away?), Craidd was left alone with the Idiot.

It was a nice day, the weather was warming up, and the grass in the garden was dry enough to sit on, so Sarah decided on a picnic today. It would have been better without the Idiot, but he's determined to stay, so it can't be helped. Besides, he felt 'magnanimous' these days.

Of course, as his name indicates, Idiot took that as Craidd becoming friendlier with him, instead.

'Preposterous'.

"Getting the hand on how to manage people, are you?" Idiot asked him, before crossing his arms behind his head and letting himself fall onto the grassy ground. Craidd chose not to answer.

"It's fine if you don't answer, take it at this Idiot talking to himself for a bit. What do you think makes a king? You must have thought about it, right?" He laughed. "You' probably also have heard the servants speaking, they have surprisingly loose lips. Wouldn't have thought Anemone would reach out that early, but hey, stranger things have happened. Hm. Where was I again?"

"What makes a king," Craidd answered half-heartedly, long used to the way the man tended to ramble when not on official business. The Russian raised a finger.

"Indeed, what makes a king. What is a king? Such an interesting question. The generic definition is a male ruler of an independent state, especially so if it is inherited from birth. Sounds pretty boring, if you ask me."

Craidd really didn't ask him.

"Instead, let us take a look as what it takes to be a ruler of men." Andrei's smile widened so much that it looked almost uncomfortable on his face. "What do you think, little man?"

The boy frowned.

"A leader... Leads people?"

Andrei laughed and Craidd's frown deepened.

"Not the question here. What is a ruler?"

"Someone who rules?"

"But what is ruling?" Andrei's grin didn't slip one bit, though...

His eyes looked the coldest they've ever been. Craidd felt a shiver run up his spine. The man wasn't smiling at all, even if his mouth did. He is very good at managing people more observant than Craidd, and then, there are those odd questions...

He remembered people's doubts, and his own attitude this year and during the previous ones.

Could it be...

"You don't think I will be a good king." Craidd realized.

Some strange feeling rose within him. The same one he felt when he learned about That Man's wedding.

Betrayal.

He felt betrayed by Andrei, for doubting him. The man himself just shrugged.

"You have room to grow, I suppose." His tone making it clear what he thought. "But when I look at the competition..."

Craidd now felt his anger rise again within him, the same one that came up whenever his siblings were mentioned. However, one look at Andrei had him swallow back his tantrum. The man clearly was expecting him to lash out.

Because then, Craidd would prove him right.

The boy stopped for a moment.

Proof.

People liked proofs and actions.

...Could it be that simple?

As Sarah came back with the food, Andrei's too wide smile shrunk into a smirk, and Craidd realized he'd been had.

This. Would. Not. Stand.

How does Craidd react?

[] Steal Andrei's dessert (Craidd will gain the Sin of Gluttony)
[] Throw food at Andrei! That Idiot deserves all of it and more! (Craidd will gain the Sin of Wrath)
[] Plot his revenge for later. The man was better than him. This would not last. (Craidd will gain the Sin of Envy)

Still... The man had a point, Craidd realized, even though it pained him greatly, and since he was the one to point it out, that means he had an idea of how to deal with it, right?

Does Craidd ask Andrei for lessons on Rulership? (will take 4 actions each turn) (This will stress Craidd out.)

[] Yes
[] No

That night, Craidd felt thoroughly exhausted, when Anemone, followed by a slightly bored Dace came to him, scooped him up, squealing, and kissed him all over his face. The boy, whose only wish was to sleep, only managed an inquisitive grunt.

"Hello, little prince~. After talking with your father, I managed to convince him that I was a better choice than his wife, we'll get married soon and you'll have a little sibling to take care of~. Unless you don't want to?" Anemone gave him the saddest eyes he's ever seen, and he folded like wet paper.

She can't be much worse than the Canadian lady, right? At least she asked, first...

The next few days were surreal, because Dace was here now, and Craidd had to fight his biting instinct like never before. Still, Anemone was with him almost every moment of the day, so he didn't feel so lonely when Sarah wasn't here.

It wasn't a bad feeling.

And then, one night, when he went to bed, he met the man in black clothes again.

"Were your expectations met with success?"

Craidd nodded, slightly wary of the man, now. He couldn't get a read on him at all, and he liked to think after Andrei, he'd gotten a good idea of how to do so.

"Then, would you like things to remain that way? After all, if things continue as they are, they will not." The man raised a gloved finger. "For one favor, for me to call upon later, I will ensure your beloved Anemone can remain by your side, at least a bit longer."

Craidd was now feeling scared, but no voice came out of his mouth. The man merely stared with a small, knowing smile.

What will Craidd do?

[] Nod. The man will expect you to make good on your promise, but Anemone will be safe. (from what?)
[] Shake head. The man will go away, but...

Craidd might be barely out of toddlerhood, but he had future duties to be prepared for, and now, he needed to, at the very least, be prepared for his future education. Better start early:

You must choose an Education for Craidd (Years 4 – 11) (Will automatically use up 4 actions per turn)

Notes: The chosen disciplines will increase Craidd's natural aptitude for the duration of said education. The main discipline will have a better bonus than the secondary one

A Connecticut Yankee in Brexit England 1

Spring, 1985, The Day England Returned.

The phone rang five times at oh-one-hundred, Western European Time.

It takes four rings to rouse groggy Will up. He picks up on the fifth.

"Yes?"

"England — it's back!" Bureau chief Sebastian Ramaker shouts, and Will nearly drops the phone.

One second to apprate. One minute to the Magical Desk. Thirty seconds to grab pepper-up on the way. Ten to the bureau. One minute to bring out the bike, one to rush outside with the go-bag, and one more to dress. Thirty seconds to splash some water, and another thirty out of bed and to the sink.

This is the story of a lifetime. Every. Second. Counts.

One second to wake up, think through the trip, and respond.

Alert Will puts the phone back up to his ear. His one second has passed, and the line is silent.

"On my way."

Crack. Ding. The doorbell rings.

The smug look on Sebastian's face is all too visible in Will head, as the chief speaks. "Laure's already there."

---

"You can't side-along with Laure."

"Well, why not?" Will asks, tossing hands in air.

Ramaker shuts down any hopes of reaching London in time for Morning Edition. "Portkeys are out, as are Brooms and aircraft too: Ministry curse-breakers report heavy defenses and wild magic.

"Instead, you'll be on a fast ship with a ministry delegation and every fourth journalist in Paris."

At this, Will can only let out a breath of annoyance. "Let's—"

Crack.

---

Calais is a pleasant town, this time of year. It usually is.

In the dead hours of night, tired and heading out on a small frigate in a storm strong enough to turn back D-Day? Less so.

"Nice weather!" Laure is as peppery as the bureau's entire wake-me-up cabinet, as always. "Apparently it's a five."

"Fascinating." The response is dry, as always.

"And up there you can see the Ministry wizards: curse breakers and Aurors. Hopefully they won't be necessary."

"Gee, thanks for the exposition."

"You're welcome." Laure says mid-mock curtsey. "I'm only doing your job for you. You're—"

"This is another 'picture is worth a thousand words' joke, isn't it?" Will interrupts.

"Maybe." Laure flashes another teasingly cheerful smile.

Now, thirty minutes after getting up from bed in Paris, exhilaration drops out and fatigue tags in. Their little section of the ship quiets, everyone falling silent. As the ship rocks in the crashing channel waves, Will drifts to sleep.

---

Dawn arrives, and with it, the Kent and Essex shores. Will wakes to warm sun on his face and some rather insistent shoulder poking.

"England awaits, Will." A melodically bright voice – Laure.

"Good morning to you too, I suppose."

Outside, Laure and the other photographers begin taking landscape shots. The Aurors stand around stiffly with wands in hand. From his vantage point farther aft, Will watches the shore grow in the distance.

Bleak.

Clear sky, mild sea, and refreshing sea paint a picturesque coastline, complete with ruined ports and villages. What used to be an active pier lies wrecked, with vehicles, cranes, containers, and boats rusting in the distance. There's even a large crater where a town of people presumably used to live.

This isn't a civilized land, at least not anymore, Will muses. Nothing remains of the British Empire's works but despair.
