This Bites! (One Piece SI)

Hmm...

How many soldiers does the world government have? I would imagine at least several million, but then again, Enies Lobby only had 10k people defending it, despite being one of the 3 most important islands under the control of the world government. And then in this story Crosses actions resulted in a noticeable percentage of marines leaving, as well as multiple kingdoms revolting, so I'm genuinely curious as to what numbers the cross brain is using for the world government, because it feels like they should have collapsed by now.
Probably around a million or so under the direct control of the World Government. If Alabasta is any indication, the member nations of the World Government maintain considerable armies of their own, something we've run with in-story. And if the Buster Call is any indication, for all their shortages of infantry the World Government has far more firepower than any of those aforementioned member nations.

Essentially, the World Government's military forces are rapid response forces designed to fight pirates and overmatch nations through a combination of individual prowess of their officers and the superior firepower of their battleships, not to mention copious amounts of CIA-tier spy shenanigans. They are not a mass army, probably due to the logistics of maintaining such a force from a global population scattered over thousands of islands.

Which really does make sense - the World Government is, as far as I can tell, the second most advanced faction in the One Piece world (only surpassed, at least in theory, by Future Country Baldimore) and possibly the most heavily industrialized, but even heavy industrialization can't compensate for logistics - especially as they don't seem to have any technology equivalent to things like freeze drying/vacuum sealing, or large scale manufacture of breech loading/rapid fire (ie., lever action/bolt action/pump action) infantry firearms (the battleships do appear to use some breechloading cannons in the signature triple turrets, although even those are accompanied by more traditional muzzle loading weaponry).

Honestly, that does raise another point - why the heck is the World Government's tech so schizophrenic in its advancement? They have directed energy weapon equipped autonomous combat robots that don't need an external power supply fighting alongside troops armed with muzzle loading rifles and swords, being transported by sailing ships that at best have a secondary steam engine driving a pair of paddlewheels. This seems very counter-intuitive, and if this is because that's how the Five Elder Stars want it, then they're a lot dumber than I thought they were.

Because the really crazy stuff like the lasers is based on the work of super-scientists like the ones in comic books or a Girl Genius spark rather than any sort of sane techological progression. Essentially, the same reason you have modern tech alongside spaceships and death rays in Marvel or DC. Or basic bolt-action rifles alongside combat robots and death rays in Girl Genius. Or a super-science lab under an ordinary Georgia suburb with all sorts of hyper-advanced vehicles and death rays in Gold Digger.

I thought the Pacifista's laser weapons were from studying that one admiral and his devil fruit abilities.

So, basically, stuff like the Pacifistas and BioMEGAs is the One Piece version of Worm's tinkertech - hyper advanced, way beyond the local tech curve, but effectively impossible to mass produce or use to boost the technology base of the faction using the Pacifistas/BioMEGAs. Mildly disappointing, but understandable, and considering the nature of the World Government, probably a good thing overall - better a small number of exceedingly expensive and fantastical toys, rather than a World Government advancing into the Atomic Era.

The trick with the semi-automatic flintlock has more to do with the cartridges being set up with a sort of multi-chamber action so that shooting the thing forces the next cartridge into place. One Piece's gunsmiths have basically never figured out how to impact detonate a charge.

One Piece guns are basically the same as ours with that one key exception. They don't have modern bullets only flintlock detonators.

So guns in One piece are flintlocks... it's just that they're also semi-automatic. Somehow.

No, the World of One Piece is very much schizoid tech, probably having something to do with the Void Century which would technically make the setting post-apocalyptic.

Between the overarching tyrannical oppression of the World Government, the general balkanization of the nations under them and the difficulty of travel/communication between The Blues, cohesive technological development isn't a thing.

At the common, bottom end you've got Age of Sail tech available everywhere.

Then you get Early Industry in a number of places. (Water 7's Sea Train, steam ships)

There's Modern Tech in a few areas. (West Blue's automatic weapons and RPGs)

Outright Superscience from a few individuals (Vegapunk, Judge, Ratchet, Hogback)

Pre-Void Century LosTech (biological replacements, like Transponder Snails)

And finally straight up Clarketech BULLSHIT. (Devil Fruits)

You know I had an idea but I'm not that great at writing so if someone could make this omake that would be great.
A secret agent (Masons. Revolutionary, or someone else) make fake bounty posters of all the high ranking marines listing demeaning insults as crime, and sends them out to the entire world.

It's amusing how the one time we've seen anyone "reload" in One Piece is Mr. 5 with his air revolver. Everyone else has like 50 round internal mags. The one time the Strawhats pulled out firearms (from somewhere???) they just mag dump and toss.

It took more than a week to binge this entire story, and I never lost interest. It's an incredible story. My only complaint is that despite all the changes Cross makes, he seems to be unable to actually change the original overall plot. Maybe the war will change that.

I mean, Merry living's a big deal. Also, he deliberately has been trying to not change things too much to make sure he can change the war, or if not, prep enough that the war ends better.

You forgot the future-tech from the Moon tribes; they had fully functional sapient automatons amongst other things.

They're also believed to be related to the ancient kingdom that the World Government formed to defeat, possibly because they were draining the Earth of its resources and rendering it uninhabitable just like they had done to the Moon.

If so, they are likely the original source of many of the advanced technologies that appear in One Piece.

...Cross is nowhere near Luffy that we know of currently.
"…you're wrong on all counts, Garp," Cross whispered solemnly. "I'm not whining. I'm not in a safe place. I've fought harder to stop this madness than anyone else before it was even fact. And if you can't see what I'm doing to put an end to this mess…"

The snail's expression morphed into rage, and the next five words hissed across the world.

"I suggest you look up."

MAYDAY! MAYDAY! We lost three snails!
What happened to Gif, Pinky, and the Brain?
Edit: Whoops, didn't realize how much time had passed between the previous post and this one. Sorry.
