The Voyage Without

I am starting to wonder if a very smug Lizard in a fedora is going to mathemagically show up and explain what is going on to Zeph…

I know it's not really Hiver's style to do collabs but it may explain why a certain pastry shaped music format hasn't updated it's fic's in a good while…

Somehow... I don't think involving the Family would be wise. They'd have... opinions on the setting, and potential time-travel, and they... tend to act on those opinions. And troll. And there'd be comments about 'vacuum lizards'. And...

I'm not convinced this setting would be improved by Lizardly trolling.

BTW, smug Lizard would also likely be in a trench-coat. Possibly dark glasses. Because she's 'in disguise'. And, 'under cover'. * sigh *

Also: I suspect this is an emergency life support system. It protects his brain and seems to be spreading through his nervous system. And it is basically indestructible. Meaning it will act to preserve his brain and nerves even if the rest of his body is somehow destroyed.
Unless its creators also had the technology to grow a clone body around the encased brain, I doubt it. Nobody fancies being a brain in a jar for longer than necessary.

Might be possible to fake-up a temporary body using psionics, while psionically regenerating a living one? Think 'Jack The Bodiless'. Telekinesis and clairtangency *, with holographic images to make it look pretty? Likely to be quite energy-intensive, though, and probably got some significant downsides. Everything's got its limits, of course.

*clairtangency is sometimes confused with psychometry, getting info from something by (physically) touching it. More strictly it is using a sense of touch without physical contact, such as providing feedback to telekinesis, by allowing a touch-like sense of what is lifted/moved/manipulated. Could be amazingly useful for lock-picking, or doing maintenance work inside something...

Okay, clairtangency would get around the second biggest issue of sensory deprivation (I'm being generous and assume the braincase can interface with its creator's cameras).

A significant downside would be that an adult body takes a long time to regrow completely on its own, so it stands to reason they would've come up with some way to speed that up.

Considering the technology involved, that seems to be well within their probable capabilities. This thing sat inert for tens of millions of years completely unaffected by anything, and despite how small it is is better than the best federation super computers. Some form of flash cloning seems entirely within that tech level.

I dunno, random human ripped from his universe, transmogrified into a dragon and dumped in a ST-ish universe, followed by implantation of alien brain goo into said dragon is something I can see the Family (especially the one from the SoF split) would be interested in seeing. And sticking their noses in. And being rather smug and snarky about the whole thing. And think of Zephs reaction to that brand of tomfoolery. It would be epic ;D

Also yes the trench coat, sunglasses, and general "smug undercover" outlook is a guarantee with that particular Lizard.

I don't think the story would be improved by the inclusion of THAT group of characters, when Star Trek has its own group of that character archtype who haven't featured either. I'm enjoying Zephyr fumbling around and gradually learning to use his neural lattice on his own.

Also, and I feel like this is important to keep in mind.

Anything you use can potentially be used against you.

Knockout gas? Not great, probably going to also kill a bunch of people depending on how new your targets are and the tech level, but maybe you can break out and steal your ship back if it's ever used on you.
Being converted to poutine topping? Harder to come back from for most species.

What are you guys referencing by the family? Is it hivers other dragon SI fic?

No, its a reference to an extremely long Worm fanfic where Taylor's shtick is she's playing a family of snarky advanced Overpowered reptilian aliens who are fond of references. I don't know if it developed further than that because I stopped reading it, mostly due to boredom.

But I couldn't be too annoyed, I was too happy that I actually managed some conscious control of the thing for the first time!

Baby steps dragon dude, baby steps.

So its not an IPad, its an altermeter, altitude and variometer sensing, or space sensor. Space navigation device . . . what they put in ships to navigate with. Of course it doesn't play video games. Its serious equipment.

They already did the star trek collab in Ship of Fools. Not sure what can be added here when that one involved a multidimensional conspiracy and solved that.
