I woke up to the sound of somebody being sick.
Thankfully, in my small bathroom. Even so, not the most pleasant sound and if you think humans smell on the outside...
Slowly blinking my eyes open, I glanced at the closest screen. 06:34.
Half an hour until shift starts. Really should be waking up anyway.
Dinah exited the bathroom and I raised my head to regard her.
I said with a small snort, "You look horrible."
"...Thanks," she grumbled and dropped back onto my sleeping pad next to me, "I feel even worse. My head is killing me."
"You should visit sickbay. I doubt you'll be the only one."
She nodded before she sighed and forced her eyes back open, "...I didn't say anything stupid last night, did I? I kinda remember coming here, but everything else is a bit of a blur."
"No," I said, shaking my head a bit, "You just pointed out I've been acting like a bit of a dick since Wolf 359."
"Oh... Zephyr, I'm-"
"No," I interrupted her, "You were right. I have. I didn't take losing my friend and my ship well at all. It wasn't just that either," I continued quieter, "...It's how helpless I felt. Ever since my arrival... It reminded me of that I think. Completely helpless and it terrified me. Couldn't do anything about it... still can't."
Dinah pushed herself up to sit, putting her hand on my neck, "Zeph, it's alright. Everybody was scared by what happened there, everybody in the fleet lost somebody, lost friends. Close friends even, family. We lost Charles."
"Not anything special," I sighed and turned my head to look at her with my closest eye, "Millions of people lost somebody close to them at that massacre. Just like everybody onboard has lost people."
She sighed and shifted, leaning against me, "...Yeah."
"Haven't seen you that drunk since the academy."
"...Was a really bad day, kinda wanted to forget it ever happened," she said quietly, "The ceremony... kinda fucked up after too."
"In what way?"
She sighed, "The thing after. Kinda... well, I thought I had a read on Megan so I tried to make a move. Nope, not into women, completely shot down in flames. Just dotted the I on that entire crapfest of a day."
I slowly blinked, "...Who's Megan?"
"Megan Delaney in stellar cartography."
"Nope."
Dinah frowned at me, "She has a twin, Jenny."
"...I think I remember them," I admitted, "Sorry, I have been crazy busy. And a bit of an arsehole."
"Yes you have," she sighed and crossed her arms, "...Well, last night sucked and I'm not getting laid for the next seventy years, so... might as well get on with it."
I looked at her in amusement, "Seventy years?"
"Well, there's only so many women onboard, even fewer are lesbian or bi and I likely made a complete fool of myself last night," she groaned and pushed herself up to sit, rubbing her eyes, "So... guess holodeck is it for me."
"...I did not need to know or hear that. I'm a very young dragon!" I protested.
That got a small laugh from her, "Yes, sure you know nothing of the sort."
"At least I really hope it won't be a problem for me until well after we get back to the Federation," I mused, "If ever. We don't know how my species works that way. Last I checked, they were still scratching their heads trying to make heads or tails of my DNA structure. I'm male, so we're pretty sure my species has females, but we don't know."
"Hey, maybe you're like one of those... What are they called, clownfish? As you age, you reach a certain point and then turn female?" she joked, "Up?" she then asked, putting a hand on my nose.
I got up, dragging her along onto her feet with an amused chuckle, "Well, wouldn't be the strangest thing that ever happened to me. Now go to sickbay, we have duty today. And I have a meeting in... oh wow, ten minutes. I'm going to be late."
"Yes, sir," she said and rubbed her eyes again, "...Thanks again, Zeph."
"Don't mention it," I said and we left. She turned left and I turned right towards engineering. Meanwhile, I dispatched Huginn to the meeting room just off the bridge. This was not a meeting I needed to engage in in person.
I technically could have just used the comm system, but I found that using a drone as a proxy had a much better result.
"Lieutenant, how're we looking," I asked as I entered engineering and Carey glanced back at me from his console.
"Crew or ship, sir?" he asked.
"Crew's mostly hungover," I said with a chuckle, "already know that. How's Voyager?"
"Sent you the worklog from delta shift," he said, "It's in your queue. Nothing new in the major category, we haven't moved since the ceremony. We should have replicators back online in a few days now when the industrial one in engineering is back online."
I nodded and trundled to climb up onto the second level, "Good work," I said, "That'll make the Captain happy."
"That'll make everyone happy."
"Point," I agreed, "I sure know I'm getting sick of survival packs."
Then I slipped my visor on and hooked into the feed from Huginn. It was just about walking into the meeting room, revealing that the only person already there was the Captain.
She was sitting, holding a cup of coffee at one end of the table.
"My apologies, sir," I said, "I'm running a few minutes late this morning."
Janeway smiled a bit, "I think that's everybody, Lieutenant," she said, "This is... Huginn, correct?"
"That's right," I agreed as Huginn sat down by the table, "If I tried to come in person, I would have been even later. I may attend most meetings via proxy in the future, it's just more practical."
She nodded and sipped her coffee, "No objection here. I find them fascinating actually, I read the report before. Based on Doctor Soong's work?"
"Partly," I agreed, "Most of the body is, no need to reinvent the wheel after all. But software, neural networks and the interesting bits are all mine."
"How smart are they?"
I considered the usual question, "'Bout as smart as a hologram without a personality matrix installed. They follow instructions, can make deductions and even make choices on how to perform an assigned function. When it comes to things like mathematics, they're very smart. They are a computer after all. But they don't have feelings or thoughts, no inner life at all. Not sapient. To put it like somebody I knew once put it 'the light's on but nobody's home'. They're assistants and remote hands, nothing more."
"Why humanoids?"
"They didn't used to be," I admitted, "Couple of versions back they were floating balls with arms. But I dropped that in favor of a humanoid form. Quadrupeds would have been even better as it's a superior mode of locomotion, but the ships and other environments where they're most used is made for humanoids of human size, making it logical to have them be humanoids as well," I said before I had Huginn turn it's head to look around, "And speaking of logic, I would have expected Commander Tuvok to be here already."
Janeway sighed, "Commander Tuvok is currently detained. There were some security altercations last night and the responsible are in the brig being questioned."
"Drunken brawl?" I asked.
Captain Janeway sighed and nodded, sipping her coffee again, "Tensions are running high," she agreed, "I thought after the funeral things would improve."
"Give it a few days, sir, perhaps it might still."
"Perhaps, Lieutenant."
