Week 2 - Rest & Relaxation
You'd think the one of the most popular bathhouses in Konoha would be more frequented during a time like this, but it's practically a ghost town. The only one other person who seems to be here is the attendant who welcomes you inside. Though you can't help but notice the small instant of surprise that flits across her face when you check in, but if there's an indication for why she's surprised she doesn't show it. Still, they accept your registration, and you're not exactly in the habit of wasting money. Well, on everything that's not new weapons, but then, is buying weapons really a waste of money?

Checkmate budget. Better luck next time.

Inside the bathhouse is just as deserted as the outside. You're the only one in the changing rooms as you carefully stack your clothes and weaponry in the locker provided and slip into the robe provided. Not that the simple locker will actually do anything if a determined shinobi wanted to steal anything from you, which is what the explosive tag booby trap you carefully place on the inside of the lock is for. Never hurts to be prepared.

With one last thought, you quickly slip a handful of kunai into the pocket of your robes. You'll have a to clean the later to make sure they don't rust, but it's worth it. You haven't actually ever not been armed since you took up weapons training, and you don't see a reason to start now.

With that taken care of you push open the screen door that leads out into the actual spring area. You take a second to look around and give a soft whistle of approval. You knew this was one of the more sought after bathhouses in Konoha, especially after you got the bill, but there's a difference between intellectually knowing something and actually seeing it for yourself. Steam gently curls up from the outdoor grotto, the dark rock contrasting off of the almost cerulean blue of the water.

A massive wooden wall stands off to the side, cutting this grotto off from the next one, and you can see how it wraps around and merges the rock formations on the other side of the pool. The trees all around have been carefully trimmed to preserve their beauty, while also preventing any pesky voyeurs from finding purchase. Again, not enough to stop a determined ninja, but then, when you lived in a village with a clan that could simply see through any wall you simply had to accept some privacy risks.

You quietly pad across the stained deck to the row of hooks, hanging above the small table stacked high with towels, scented oils , soaps and other such accompaniments. You take a moment to wash yourself down. You're not normally one to be all over beauty products, you're fairly certain Neji uses more hair products than you do, but this is a rare opportunity to pamper yourself. Outside of the constraints of your apartment, equal parts too small and lacking in hot water. You even unfurl the small ribbons holding your buns in place, letting your shoulder-length hair fall down completely in what feels like ages.

Then the moment of truth, you dip your two in the water and let out a contented sigh. Scalding, just like you like it. It only takes you a second to completely sink in, letting the water wash over you and wipe away the stress of the last few weeks. The pool itself is massive, easily able to fit 15 people, more with only slight crowding. Normally, you'd have to share it, they're communal baths after all. For now though, it's all yours.

You lean back, sinking down and letting the steam flood through your lungs. This worth it. This is completely worth it.

The physical stressors are the first to go, the little aches and pains that are part and parcel of training with Gai-sensei. They're not as present as they were even a month ago, but they're practically an inevitability. A crick in your neck you didn't even notice you had, a slight pain when you over-rotated your shoulder, a lingering ache in your lower back, they all get washed away.

The mental stress though, those take far longer. Worry about Lee and Neji, wondering about what happened to Kin, anxiousness of the events that only seem to keep happening. All these blend together with the stress and worry of a thousand different little things you need to take care of. Will you be good enough, can you even be good enough? Everything's happening so fast, and it's taking all you can to just stay on top of things. You let out a deep sigh and sink lower in the water, letting the air blow bubbles in front of your face.

You close your eyes and just try to let go, letting your mind drift into empty nothingness as you breath in...and out...in...and out...

You hear a soft sound, like muffled voices, and the faint sound of footsteps, but after cracking an eye open to confirm that no one's coming into this stall you pay it no heed. Guess more customers finally decided to show up. You heave a contented sigh as you finally feel the hard knot of stress weighing on your mind finally start to loosen up.

Then there's the slightest sound of wood scraping against rock and your eyes snap open. That came from directly in front of you. The only thing directly in front of you is the outer wall. You sit up slightly, the water splashing slightly at your sudden movement and narrow your eyes. You look around, but you see nothing. Still, it doesn't hurt to be careless, and you feel the world sharpen around you intensely, everything coming into focus sharper than the edge of one your blades as golden light blooms. Then you see it, tucked away where the wooden wall meets rock, a solitary gap, probably a mistake of the building process.

And a single blue eye.

You've never grabbed a kunai so fast in your life.

~///~
Naruto Uzumaki was beginning to think he'd made some mistakes. Well, scratch that, he'd definitely made a lot of mistakes, but today; today he felt like he was setting a new record. The first one had been believing that pervert when he said he was just stepping out for a moment. Number two was leaving out his wallet. Which led to him to mistake number 3, which was coming here in search of him. Creeping along outside a bathhouse wall, which given this was his first and only idea of where to find his erstwhile teacher, said a bunch of things.

Most of which he was currently trying to ignore. "Pervy sage?" He peeked around one of the rock formations, "Come on you idiot where are you?" If experiences held, he'd probably turn up in an hour or three, but unfortunately Naruto was not willing to wait that long. Especially with his wallet on the line this time.

Then he turned the corner to the last grotto, only to find it empty. No peeping toms in sight whatsoever. Which means the rumor he heard about that pervert being around here didn't even mean anything, and poor froggy is probably being bled dry right now. He let out an audible groan as everything set in.

Then he noticed it, tucked away right where the wooden wall met the rock wall. Carefully carved so that it looked like a simple fault of construction, exactly in the spot so no matter the time of day someone standing in front of it would be in the shadows. Naruto paused for a second, temptation beginning to unfold. Froggy needed him, but...

Unfortunately, trouble and Naruto had a rather long-standing and committed relationship, because at that moment a contented, and distinctly feminine, sigh and faint splashing of water drifted over top of the wall. Hormones raged with common sense, and as in most growing boys, hormones won a decisive victory. Surely a little peek couldn't hurt?

Naruto would never actually find out the answer to that question, because as soon as he levered himself up into position to see a faint glimpse of brown hair several things happened in quick succession. First, his sandal slipped on the wet rock with a faint skittering sound. Second, the sun felt it was boring up in the sky and decided it rather liked this bathhouse right here, enough to pay a visit. Third, as he reared back blinking spots from his eyes, a kunai sprouted from the indent in a shower of sparks. And fourth, as he fell back with a shout, he realized Hello mistake #4...when did you get here?

The blonde-haired genin hit the ground with a thump. He slowly sat up, rubbing the back of his head with a groan. "Ah man I-"

"You have fifteen seconds."

"Wha-" He glanced up, only to see two golden irises staring down at him from over the wall, brown hair framing a brilliant golden circle over a somewhat familiar girl's face.

"Ahaha...I...ah..." Naruto gave a weak laugh.

How in the hell is he going to get out of this one?

Oh hey there Naruto. I'm sure this is going to end well for you. Oh, and obviously you guys are going to be controlling Tenten at the start of next update. This was just too funny not to do.

Also oh hey, daily updates. Maybe these will be a regular thing. (Spoilers: Probably not)

Week 2 - Rest & Relaxation II
"Ahaha...I...ah...well..." Your fellow finalist laughs weakly, rubbing the back of his neck, and for a second you think he's going to make a run for it. You ratchet up your "You are an idiot" glare to half a Lee. Which only causes him to pale further. Despite the situation, you suppress a small giggle, the small spark of humor rapidly outgrowing the lingering anger you still felt.

"Well?"

"I was, ah..." Naruto looks like he doesn't quite want to meet your gaze. "I was just trying to my teacher-andthenIgotalittlecuriousIdidn'tseeanythingIswear!" His explanation rapidly derails into a barely comprehensible mess. It takes a few seconds for you to actually parse your way through it.

You blink, "I-"

"You have pretty hair...please don't kill me." He blurts out as a finisher, cutting you off.

"what." Your mouth drops open slightly and you're forced to suppress a slight blush at the compliment. But you force that down. You did used to idly wish that boys would pay more attention to you. However, you're definitely sure this sort of situation was not what you had in mind.

A faint flash of intent buzzes in the back of your mind.

<Doesn't want you to hurt him>

You level one last glare at him before letting it relax.

"Relax, I'm not going to hurt you." You sigh. Not like you ever really planned to anyway; you didn't even slap Lee that time he accidentally collapsed the roof of the women's changing room and fell in while training. Not that you were sure Lee, or Neji for that matter, even saw you as a girl anymore. The kunai had been mostly a reaction born of shock.

You feel your spirits start to fall just a bit at the thought of Lee, but you push that away for now. Dealing with the peeper now, worrying about your friend later. The bemused feeling you get when he visibly brightens helps a bit with that.

"Well that's a relief!" You can practically see him breath a sigh of relief, "I was-" Then he looks at you and you see his eyes narrow in recognition, "Wait! Your Bushy-brow's teammate! Bun-girl!" He pauses, "...why don't you have buns?"

Your forehead makes a rather distinct thud as it impacts the wooden fence. Did he just...? "You just-...and I...you-" You cast a meaningful glance at your still wet hair (and also the fact he just saw you were in a bath) and pinch the bridge of your nose, "Right, so I've realize you're not a pervert."

"Yeah! I-"

"You're just an idiot."

"Hey!"

You cinch the robe just a bit tighter and lean forward on the wall, ignoring his outburst. "I'm going to ignore the fact that you didn't know who I was until just now." That stung a bit. "Why are you even here in the first place?"

"Oh, ah, I was looking for Pervy Sage he-"

Your face adopts the resolutely neutral expression you're usually only forced to use against Lee and Gai. "Pervy Sage?"

"Oh right, he's a toad sage or something, I don't know." Naruto waves his hand dismissively, "Anyway, I got him to teach me after he laid out my old teacher like a rug, he knows all sorts of Jutsu. Even if he is a pervert he's super cool."

Your eyebrow quirks up just a touch, "Naruto, don't you have a jounin-sensei to train you?"

He makes a face, "No, he's spending all his time teaching Sasuke."

That causes the gears in your head to turn, why would he do that? He has two students in the Finals, and Naruto is going up against Neji, surely he'd want to give him all the help he can get, and the Uchiha is going up against-

Oh.

Oh right.

Him.

Well, that certainly makes sense. You doubt Neji will kill Naruto, no matter what ridiculous grudge he has going on. Gaara on the other hand. You shiver slightly beneath the white cotten robe. Though you can't help but feel slightly relieved that Gai-sensei's Eternal Rival is spending all of his training the Uchiha to try and beat Gaara. Maybe Neji won't have to face him after all.

You very carefully don't voice any of these thoughts to Naruto.

"Anyway, Pervy Sage ran off some place again and he took...my...wallet." You can practically hear the gears turning in his head, "Crap he has my wallet! Poor Froggy will be bled dry! What do I do?! I have to find him!"

He does a convincing impression of a shunshin in getting out of that clearing, but not before turning and waving back to you.

"See ya Bun-girl! Tell your teammate I'm going to kick his butt in the finals!"

Would it kill him to remember your name?

You stare at the retreating form of Naruto for a second before dropping down off the wall, pulling the kunai free from the rock you embedded it in as you do so. You look it over with a grimace, carving into rock is just not in a cards for regular unaltered blades like this. Until you get a chance to sharpen it, it's too dull to be useful. You tuck it away as you glance back in the direction Naruto ran off in.

On one hand, you could probably grab your stuff quickly enough to catch up with him. You get the sense it'd be bound to prove...interesting at the very least. You're not entirely sure you want to meet someone called "The Pervy Sage" though. On the other hand...you spare a glance at the still steaming waters to your right. Getting peaked at once has ruined the experience just a bit, but you still have time left.

What are you going to do?
[ ] Follow after him.
[ ] Stay here and finish your bath
[ ] Write-in

Tenten is, fortunately for Naruto, a forgiving soul. Not liable for any bouts of violence or anger except when Lee is involved. Anyway, this is the last social event for this week. Training Shunshin with Sakura is getting folded into the weekly recap. Oh, and not chasing after Naruto means you get to meet the second person you rolled to meet (Yes, they've already been rolled, and no, you don't get any hints who they are.)

Week 2 Final - Rest & Relaxation III
You decide against trying to follow Naruto. While a part of you wants to track him to down and see what he's up to, you don't really see a point. If need be you can always try and find him again, he doesn't exactly strike you as someone that hard to track down. No, instead you have an appointment with soothing hot water.

As you lean back in the bathwater though, you can't seem to shake the sensation that you're missing something though. Like there's a memory just on the tip of your tongue that slips out of your grasp whenever you reach for it.

You've always hated that feeling.

You slip further into the water as your brow furrows slightly. It's something Naruto blurted out in his scattershot explanation of his training, you're sure of it. Toad sage...why does that sound so familiar? You shift slightly, sinking deeper into the warm embrace of the bathwater, and sigh. No matter, if he thinks getting training from someone called "The Pervy Sage" is going to help him against Neji he's...

Wait. Toad sage. Pervy. Was looking for him near a women's bathhouse. Your eyes snap open with a realization. Pervert Toad Sage. No, it can't be, there's no way he could...but if he is. Could that knucklehead possibly be getting training from Jiraiya of the Sannin?! Hero of the Second Great Shinobi War, Famed Sage of Mount Myōboku, and most importantly Lady Tsunade's teammate!

You sink lower in the water for a moment, bubbles of air betraying your intense thought. You could...no, he's probably too far to track properly by now. Damn, if only you'd made that connection sooner. Even if it turned out not to be the case you have to know. This could be the best chance you had in years to get Lady Tsunade's autograph! Or even maybe meet her!

You suddenly feel very light-headed.

You let yourself fall back against the edge of the pool with a sigh. Letting yourself enjoy the thought of meeting your idol for the first time. What would you even say to her? For years you tried to be exactly like her, to...less than stellar success. You blush slightly at the thought of all the bars and gambling houses you got thrown out of, literally in some cases.

You're pretty sure your picture is still on the wall in a couple of them. But Lady Tsunade is still...she's The Kunoichi, she's-

"That was quite a display you put on."

Why

A feminine voice interrupts your revelry. Why must everyone insist on interrupting your private time? You quirk an eye open to-...oh

The intruder is perched on top of the wooden surrounding the bathing area. Half-shrouded by the shadows of the trees, but still enough to see her long purple hair fall down past the twin swords strapped to her back. You don't really pay attention to those though, because your focus is entirely on the white mask of some indeterminate animal covering her face, and the prominent red tattoo on her upper arm.

ANBU.

Why is an ANBU member here? Why is an ANBU member interrupting you in the bath? Why is an ANBU member interrupting you in the bath?!

You force down the immediate reaction of utter panic, in hopes of approaching this with some measure of calm composure. You fail of course, but it was nice to try at least. At least you remember to surreptitiously grab one of your kunai, folding it close to your breast as you hunker down in the water. "Uhh..."

You know what would be nice now? The thought idly pops into your head: Clothes. Clothes would be very good now.

The ANBU member simply hops down off of the rock without a sound, "Quite obvious who it was as well, made it very easy to find you."

If she's trying to reassure you, this is an exceptionally poor job. Wait. Right, you can-

<Wants to talk to you about something very personal>

Okay, that just raises further questions. You're positive you don't know anyone who's in ANBU, unless they happened to be in the business of recruiting genin right out of the academy. And the last time you even saw an ANBU member was...that night. "Why...why are you here?" You manage to keep the waver out of your voice, mostly.

"I-" She pauses, just for a split second, but enough for you to notice and when she continues her voice is ever so slightly thicker, "-wanted to ask a favor for a friend, she...wants to talk with you about something you saw."

<Doesn't want to reveal her identity to you.>

Your eyes widen slightly at that, why...no, she's ANBU, of course she doesn't want to reveal her identity. Though why would that be her overriding intent? Unless, she's not asking for a friend. So many questions, most of which you suspect you won't get an answer for if you ask. "What does she want to know about?" You ask, trying and failing to keep the edge of suspicion out of your voice.

You see her mask twitch left and right, surveying over the empty bathing area. Idly you wonder how exactly her mask works, you can't see any visible eye holes, just two black dots of paint. Likely some complex seal work to make it transparent, or something similar. It's something to focus on, to distract yourself from freaking out over the fact that a black-ops agent is interrupting your bath to ask you for personal favors holy sh-*ahem*

"Not here. She wants to meet you, in person, someplace safe."

<Wants to know about Hayate>

You chew your lip, you can't exactly say you're surprised. What else would an ANBU, or their "friend" at least, want with you? Do you even know anything classified besides about that night? The old saying about genin and mushrooms springs to mind. Still, something feels...off about this whole thing. You can tell she's lying to you about something. "And...if I say no?" you ask with a lot more confidence than you feel.

"Please I-" she cuts herself off, "She...there's things I cannot get from reports. I would be in your debt."

<Wants to know how her boyfriend died from someone who was there>

Oh.

Do you agree to meet with her friend?
[ ] Yes
[ ] No

Interlude Vote:

[ ] Conflict Within Sakura

[ ] How Troublesome Shikamaru

[ ] How Things Seem Kabuto

So, the mystery box option was meeting Yugao. In doing so, you've gained a social option for meeting her next week, with the possibility of getting her as a tutor. In return, you lost the opportunity to meet Jiraiya early, and therefore start working on making an impression early, and you'll have to interact with him solely through Naruto for now.

Trying a new thing where instead of allowing interlude write-ins, I'm curating them just a bit. Narrowing down to several things I think you would be interested in seeing. I'll give a reward if you guys manage to guess who they all represent.

Some are easier than others.

Week 3 Training Vote
VOTING IS NOW OPEN

TRAINING WEEK 3:
You have 14 training slots to allocate this week. 1 Training slot gives you the equivalent of 1 XP towards an Ability/ Charm/Jutsu/etc.

For the purposes of this training, Ninjutsu and Genjutsu techniques are treated as Charms in terms of XP cost, while Taijutsu and Fuinjutsu are treated as abilities. Seal Components have an XP cost equal to their complexity. Certain Training Resources can increase the yield of training actions that you take under their supervision.

Available Training Resources:
- Alone:
All by your lonesome. On one hand it is likely to be the best chance you have of keeping your techniques secret. On the other hand it means you have to figure things out without. (No bonuses)
- Gai-sensei: Bonus to training Taijutsu, Athletics, and Resistance. As well as Stamina and Strength Attributes.

- Sakura Haruno: Bonus to training Ninjutsu/Genjutsu and Occult
- Neji Hyuuga: Bonus to Taijutsu, Awareness and Perception

Gai is available for a total of 8 slots, Sakura and Neji are both available for 4.

Train Jutsu
Training Resource:
[ ]
Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing Technique
Cost:
15 Chakra Difficulty: 2
Category: Genjutsu
Duration: Instantaneous
Prerequisite Jutsu: None

This is a genjutsu that reveals the fears that dwell inside people's hearts. Everyone has an image of the one thing they wouldn't want to ever see. This genjutsu is a technique that draws forth such an image from within the heart and has one mistake it for reality.

Temporary Paralysis Technique
Cost:
20 Chakra Difficulty: 3
Category: Genjutsu
Duration: Instantaneous
Prerequisite Jutsu: None

A technique that physically restrains an opponent, as if the opponent had been tied in invisible steel ropes. It debilitates the victim for a short period of time, which allows the user to either strike again, or take the target into custody.
Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Cost:
35 Chakra Difficulty: 3
Category: Genjutsu
Duration: Instantaneous
Prerequisite Jutsu: Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing Technique

A genjutsu that allows one to trick others into mistaking the place they're in for another. This technique's main feature is that it can be cast over an extensive surface, therefore any and all who step into the illusion's area of effect will fall under the spell.

Fire Release: Phoenix Sage Fire Technique
Cost:
5 Chakra per fireball Difficulty: 4 3
Category: Ninjutsu
Duration: Instantaneous
Prerequisite Jutsu: None

This technique creates a volley of small fireballs, which are sent flying in an unpredictable manner assaulting the enemy. These fireballs can be individually manipulated with chakra and guided towards the enemy.

Elemental Clones
Cost:
40 Chakra per Clone Difficulty: 3
Category: Ninjutsu
Duration: Instantaneous
Prerequisite Jutsu: Bunshin

Similar to the Shadow Clone Jutsu in that it forms corporeal clones, however Elemental Clones are significantly less powerful in their own right as they only receive a fraction of the User's chakra, rather than it being evenly distributed. Likewise, the user does not receive their memory upon their destruction.
Hien
Cost:
5 Chakra per second (per minute with proper equipment) Difficulty: 5 (3 with proper equipment)
Category: Ninjutsu
Duration: Instantaneous
Prerequisite Jutsu: None

The user is able to use chakra to enhance their weapons with this technique. Weapons made of chakra conductive material greatly reduce the cost of doing so. With Tenten's Fire Release, the blade will grow to extreme temperatures, rendering it incredibly effective against soft targets.

Shadow Clones
Cost:
80 Chakra per Clone Difficulty: 5
Category: Ninjutsu
Duration: Instantaneous
Prerequisite Jutsu: Bunshin

However, these clones are corporeal instead of illusions. The user's chakra is evenly distributed among every clone, giving each clone an equal fraction of the user's overall power. The clones are capable of performing techniques, including the Shadow Clone Technique itself, on their own and can even bleed, but will usually disperse after hit by a strong enough force. The clones can also disperse on their own or be dispelled by the user of the technique. When dispersed their memories return to the User.

Ten Thousand Wild Heavenly Blades
Cost:
100 Chakra Difficulty: 6
Category: Ninjutsu/Bukijutsu
Duration: Instantaneous
Prerequisite Jutsu: Manipulated Shuriken Technique
Prerequisite Fuinjutsu Component: [Item Seal]

In a feat of immense chakra control, the user turns a cloud of controlled weapons into a scything stream of metal, before finally burying the target(s) under the weight of metal. Can be improved with chakra strings rather than physical wires, or chakra augmentation of the blades.

Train Charm
Training Resource:
[ ]
Hungry Tiger Technique
Cost: 1m
Mins: Melee 2, Essence 1
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
Solar warriors make themselves one with their blades. The Exalt spends one mote and makes a Melee-based attack. This Charm allows the Solar's player to count extra successes on the attack roll twice for the purposes of determining raw damage.

One Weapon, Two Blows
Cost: 3m
Mins: Melee 2, Essence 1
Type: Reflexive (Step 1)
Keywords: Combo-OK, Martial
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
The Solar is as swift as the first rays of dawn. Repeat steps 7-10 when resolving the damage for this Charm, effectively damaging the opponent twice. All damage from the attack is applied simultaneously in Step 10, allowing a single perfect soak to defend against it.

Call the Blade
Cost: —(1m)
Mins: Melee 2, Essence 2
Type: Permanent
Keywords: Merged, Mirror (Blade-Summoning Gesture), Obvious
Duration: Permanent
Prerequisite Charms: None
The Solar's weapons know their master. The Solar holds out her hand and calls to the Essence of one of her weapons. If the desired weapon is within (Essence x 10) yards, and a flight path exists between the weapon and her hand, this Charm draws the weapon into her grasp. She must own the weapon she calls. This Charm can be used to draw and ready a sheathed weapon reflexively.
The Solar may reflexively spend one mote to activate this Charm as described. He may only call his blade from up to (Essence x 2) yards away while in battle, however.

Heavenly Guardian Defense
Cost: 8m
Mins: Melee 4, Essence 2
Type: Reflexive (Step 2)
Keywords: Combo-OK, Obvious
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: Bulwark Stance
The character invokes this Charm in response to an attack. The attack must not be unexpected, and the character must have a weapon in hand. This Charm is a parry that perfectly defends against any attack, even if it is unblockable. Mundane weapons can break when used with this Charm. If the character uses this Charm and a mundane weapon to block an attack that inflicts at least 25L raw damage before soak, the weapon breaks (though it still successfully parries). This Charm has one of the Four Flaws of Invulnerability (see boxed text) common to all Solar perfect defenses.
Graceful Crane Stance
Cost: 3m
Mins: Athletics 1, Essence 2
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: One scene
Prerequisite Charms: None
The Solar Exalted are as graceful as sunlight on water. This Charm lets the Exalt automatically succeed on any valid Athletics action to keep his balance. Moreover, this Charm allows the Exalt to keep his footing on any surface at least as strong and wide as a human hair. He treats it as a three-footwide ledge capable of supporting a thousand pounds of weight when determining what movement and Athletics actions he can take and what penalties to them might apply.

Monkey Leap Technique
Cost: 3m
Mins: Athletics 1, Essence 2
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: One scene
Prerequisite Charms: None
The heroes of the dawn leap with the grace of a flying crane and the speed of a striking hawk. For the rest of the scene, the character can jump with a movement action instead of a miscellaneous action, and she doubles the length of all jumps.
While this Charm is active, the character may reflexively Jump only once per action, on her action tick. This does not replace her Move actions, and she may still only Jump once per action.
Body-Mending Meditation
Cost
: 10m
Mins: Resistance 1, Essence 1
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Until the day ends
Prerequisite Charms: None

Even wounded nigh unto death, a Lawgiver will marshal the strength to rise again. This Charm supplements a dramatic action to marshal the character's inner resources for recovery. This action requires one hour without a stunt or another Charm. The Solar's player rolls (Stamina + Resistance). Success speeds his healing rate by a factor of 10 or, if the character prefers, adds directly to the successes of a physician using Wound-Mending Care Technique on the character. See page 149 for more on natural healing rates.
Characters can activate Body-Mending Meditation when inactive
Joint-Wounding Attack
Cost: 2m
Mins: Thrown 3, Essence 1
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK, Crippling, Martial-ready
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
Even in a pitched battle, the Lawgivers strike with controlled precision. This Charm enhances a Thrown-based attack so that it stuns or cripples the Solar's opponent. For each health level of damage this attack inflicts, this Charm subtracts one die (as a -1 internal penalty) from the target's Physical Attribute dice pools and one point from the equivalent static ratings. This is a Crippling effect that lasts for the remainder of the scene. The players and Storyteller decide how the effect is inflicted—it could be an injured hand, slashed tendons or a stunning blow to the head. Storytellers will have to work with the players to determine how the attack cripples more exotic opponents such as automata and the walking dead.

Observer-Deceiving Attack
Cost: 1m
Mins: Thrown 3, Essence 2
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
The Solars' opponents are often arrogant and attempt to predict how and when the Lawgivers will strike. Such is their folly that they cannot see the vengeance of the Unconquered Sun even when it comes upon them. This Charm conceals a Thrown-based attack. Characters watching the Solar need (the Solar's Essence) successes on a reflexive (Wits + Awareness) roll to notice him making the attack. This success requirement decreases by one each additional time the Solar uses this Charm in a scene. For characters not watching the Solar, all evidence indicates that the attack comes from a direction and distance named by the Solar when making the attack. For example, a Solar attacking from behind might wound an enemy in the side or chest by having his missile curve at the last moment.

Triple-Distance Attack Technique
Cost: 2m
Mins: Thrown 2, Essence 2
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
The Solar imbues his weapon with Essence, so that it flies true. This Charm enhances a Thrown-based attack. The Exalt spends three motes and triples the Range of the weapon.
If the Solar has Essence 4 or higher, this Charm also negates external penalties from environmental conditions.

Branding Judgment Attack
Cost: — (2m per attack)

Keywords: Crippling, Obvious, Stackable
Duration: Indefinite
Prerequisite Charms: Any Thrown Excellency
Integrity-Protecting Prana
Cost: 5m, 1wp
Mins: Integrity 1, Essence 1
Type: Reflexive (Step 2)
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: One day
Prerequisite Charms: None
The Sun's Chosen define their own reality. This Charm protects the character from any Shaping effect that directly alters her mind, body, spirit or traits. This includes instantaneous Shaping effects and any new alterations caused by long-term Shaping effects. This Charm also protects the character from any undodgeable, unblockable Shaping attacks. Wyld energy cannot create a serpent inside the character's stomach or turn her armor to lava, whether it's manipulated by an enemy or its own random whims, because these effects inflict immediate damage and the character's DV is not applicable.
This Charm does not protect against the miscellaneous dangers of the Wyld. If a Wyld effect creates a hundred-headed snake monster with burning chalcedony eyes that then eats the character, this is not directly altering the character's body through shaping. Nor is it an "attack" when a Wyld effect transforms the character's armor into harmless gossamer spider webs—simply an undesirable effect.

Destiny-Manifesting Method
Cost: —
Mins: Integrity 3, Essence 2
Type: Permanent
Keywords: None
Duration: N/A
Prerequisite Charms: Integrity-Protecting Prana
A Solar forges her own destiny, and none gainsay her will. This Charm increases the difficulty of any rolled Shaping effect (see p. 217) used against the character by two. Characters using Shaping effects that involve the character can remove this penalty with any stunt that reconciles the Shaping effect with the Lawgiver's sense of her own destiny. In the Wyld or the Labyrinth, this Charm reduces the frequency of random unfortunate incidents by a factor of 10. There is no cost to use this Charm—it is a permanent enhancement to the Exalt's nature.

Righteous Lion Defense

Duration: Permanent
Prerequisite Charms: None
To the Solar Exalted, "death" and "surrender" are almost the same thing. This Charm helps a character hold fast to her fundamental Intimacies in the face of temptation. The player picks one of the character's Intimacies when purchasing this Charm. For the purposes of this Solar Charm, this loyalty must be to an ideal—not to a person or a love, but sometimes to a relationship; not to a tribe or city, but sometimes to the nation she might build of them; not to a battle or a war, but to the extinction of one foe or the conquest of a great region. (Other Exalted have versions of this Charm that support different commitments.)
This Charm allows the character to treat mental influence to betray or forsake that Intimacy as an unacceptable order (see p. 180). If the character voluntarily abandons that Intimacy or it becomes obsolete, this Charm ceases to function until, first, a new story begins and, second, the character chooses a new Intimacy to which the Charm applies. Players can also shift this Charm to a new Intimacy at any time by spending one experience point. Players can purchase this Charm a second time to reinforce one additional Intimacy. Any further loyalties require more specialized magic.

Stubborn Boar Defense
Cost: —
Mins: Integrity 3, Essence 2
Type: Permanent
Keywords: None
Duration: N/A
Prerequisite Charms: None
Solar Exalted in Limit Break cannot temper their glory with wisdom. This Charm causes the character to treat all directives from unnatural mental influence as unacceptable orders while in Limit Break.

TEMPTATION-RESISTING STANCE
Cost: 6m
Mins: Integrity 2, Essence 1
Type: Reflexive (Step 2)
Keywords: Combo-OK, Stackable, Social
Duration: One scene
Prerequisite Charms: Any Integrity Excellency
In foul nests of demons whose ways of corruption assault the human mind; amidst the courts of faeries gluttonous for human souls; in Nexus, surrounded by a thousand temptations—though the whole world seeks to drag him down, the Lawgiver is unmoved. This Charm increases the character's Dodge MDV by his Temperance for the remainder of the scene. Storytellers can allow the Exalt to use his Conviction, Compassion or Valor score instead of Temperance if the character has appropriate motivation.
Crafty Observation Method
Cost: 5m
Mins: Investigation 3, Essence 2
Type: Simple (DV -1)
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: Any Investigation Excellency
The world holds no mysteries to the Chosen of the Sun. This Charm is an Investigation-based action wherein the character studies observable evidence. This Charm functions exactly as a dramatic Investigation action that takes up to 15 minutes, save that the character performs it in a handful of seconds and does not need to ransack the scene.

Judge's Ear Technique
Cost: 3m
Mins: Investigation 2, Essence 1
Type: Reflexive (Step 1)
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: One scene
Prerequisite Charms: Any Investigation Excellency
The Lawgivers are the guardians of truth. This Charm allows the character to recognize as lies all deliberate lies presented to her. The character can also recognize the deliberate use of half-truths, though doing so does not tell her which part of the statement is true. If another Charm contests these effects (see p. 179), add the character's Essence in automatic successes to the (Perception + Investigation) roll to oppose the other Charm.

Courtier's Eye Technique
Cost: 3m
Mins: Investigation 3, Essence 1
Type: Simple
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
The Lawgivers understand the harmonies of the world. This Charm allows the character to detect others' importance or wealth with a glance. This Charm targets one individual the character can sense. The Exalt's player rolls (Perception + Investigation), adding the Solar's Essence in automatic successes. If the target is concealing his identity or Resources in any way, subtract an external penalty of ([the target's Manipulation + Socialize] ÷ 2) from the successes on the Investigation roll. If the Exalt succeeds, she learns the target's Resources and Influence ratings. In addition, she can make a rough but solid estimate of how many allies the target considers himself to have in the immediate circumstances and how much wealth and power the target wields through organization-specific Backgrounds such as Backing and Followers. The Solar may not attempt to use this Charm on a given target more than once per scene.
Keen (Sense) Technique
Cost: 3m
Mins: Awareness 3, Essence 2
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: One scene
Prerequisite Charms: Any Awareness Excellency
Essence enhances the Solar's senses. Keen (Sense) Technique is actually three Charms, one that heightens sight, one that heightens hearing and touch and one that heightens smell and taste. This Charm gives two bonus successes on Awareness actions that use the relevant senses. It also allows the character to clearly perceive sensory impressions that are normally too faint for human senses to validly observe at all. Some feats appropriate for users of this Charm follow.
Sight. The character can make out the detail on a commander's epaulet at 500 yards distance, at night. He can see the individual threads of a shirt, and with a legendary success, he can make out the motion of the mites that live on others' eyebrows.
Hearing and Touch. The character can gauge the quality of fabric with a touch. He reduces the external penalty to target unseen characters to -1 and the internal penalty from blindness to -2. He can hear conversations normally through thick stone walls. With a legendary success, he can read by touch.
Smell and Taste. The character can recognize others and hints of their recent activities by smell. He can track by scent, gaining one bonus success when tracking someone who has a scent. The character can identify spices and poisons by taste. With a legendary success, he can detect but not identify a few drops of tasteless poison in a wine—as its presence serves to dilute the wine.

Surprise Anticipation Method
Cost: 1m
Mins: Awareness 5, Essence 2
Type: Reflexive (Step 2)
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
In this degenerate time, the Lawgivers depend on a preternatural sense for danger. This Charm guarantees success on any valid Awareness roll to notice immediate mortal danger. This Charm works whether in or out of battle, awake or asleep. If the Exalt has a chance to notice a surprise attack during a prolonged struggle, a dart blown at him in the jungle, an invisible opponent or a cleverly concealed pit, he does so.
If the Exalt's player must make such a roll and has a chance of failing it, and if the Solar can invoke this Charm, this Charm invokes itself automatically. At that time, if the player has a Combo containing this Charm, he may declare the use of that Combo instead of just the Surprise Anticipation Method Charm.
Surprise Anticipation Method does not invoke itself if the character has already used his Charm for the action, if the character does not have any motes of Essence, if the character is Inactive and cannot become active, if the character is already certain to succeed on the Awareness roll or if the character cannot normally attempt an Awareness roll.

Inescapable Eye Of The Sun
Cost: 3m
Mins: Awareness 3, Essence 2
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: Combo-OK, Touch
Duration: Indefinite
Prerequisite Charms: Any Awareness Excellency
The vigilance of the Lawgivers is as inescapable as day and night. By touching a solid obstruction such as a door or wall no more than (Essence) yards thick, the Solar is able to perceive any events occurring on the other side as though he were present.
Breaking contact with the surface through which one is spying ends the Charm.
Whirling Brush Method
Cost: 4m
Mins: Linguistics 1, Essence 1
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
The diplomats of the Unconquered Sun write with a swift and elegant hand. This Charm supplements a dramatic action to write something down—be it a copy of an existing book, the transcript of a live conversation or an original work. This Charm allows the character to write at (her Essence x 10) times her normal speed. Instead of dedicating 30 hours to copying a manuscript, an Essence 2 character might finish it in an hour and a half. Instead of six hours writing and polishing a treaty, an Essence 3 Eclipse might prepare it in 12 minutes.

Learn Seal Component
Training Resource:
[ ]
Elemental Sealing
Complexity:
3-10 (depending on strength of Seal)
Cost: 5 Chakra

This seal allow the user to seal away the effects of an Elemental Ninjutsu. Each seal can only hold the effects of one technique, and must be tailored towards a specific element. In addition, in order to capture stronger techniques, a stronger seal is required. For example, a Complexity 3 Elemental Fire Seal will not be able to contain Amaterasu. The Jutsu captured can later be unseal for use by the Sealer. (This is how Tenten created her Exploding Dragon Strike)

Basic Chakra Seal
Complexity:
4
Tags: [Chakra Manipulation]
Cost: Variable

This component functions as a chakra battery, allowing the user to store additional Chakra to function as an additional well of Chakra over and above their regular cap. Are also an important component of most Technique that activate independent of the Sealer. There are more advanced versions with a higher storage capacity.

Manipulated Storage Seals
Complexity:
2
Tags: [Reusable]
Cost: 2 Chakra

These are modified Storage Seals that allow the contained item to be fired out of the seal at high-velocity, rather than having to be thrown by the user.

Vision Seal
Complexity: 4
Tags:
[Space-time]
Cost: 10 Chakra per minute activated

This Seal functions as a third eye for the Sealer, allowing them to see a vision of the surrounding area of where the Seal is placed in their mind, though at this level only vision is available through the seal

Make a Summoning Contract
Training Resource: [Gai/Alone]

**Note: At this point you only have the means to make a contract with the Turtles. Who you've kinda sorta offended gravely by saying the Slugs are better than them.**
**Note: Trying a summon without a contract is a terrible idea**

Voting Structure:
These votes are likely to be hideously complicated, so I would encourage everyone to vote for a plan name and only a plan name in order to allow for ease of counting.

Who do you spend time first in the week?

Interlude 3 - Kin Tsuchi
Kin hated her bed. It was soft, far softer than any bed she'd had before. Better than the street she grew up on, better than the bunks everyone slept on in Otokagure, even better than the ambassadorial quarters she'd been in the past few weeks. The sheets weren't silk, but they were close enough. It was the kind of bed a younger her would have fantasized about sleeping in.

Now all it felt like was a traitor's bed.

Traitor. The word itself caused her stomach to churn, because that was what she was. A traitor. Pathetic scum. That was all she was. All she had left were her failures, whispering in her ear that she was too weak, too worthless. A task she was set up to fail, that she hadn't been good enough to succeed anyway. The smug half-grin on the clan kids face as he explained how he was better than her. She was pathetic excuse for a kunoichi, worthless...weak.

Weaknesses were always purged.

The room didn't help. It was well-furnished besides the bed. A television, the couch she now sat on, a nice wooden coffee-table in between, they were all there. A painting here and there, decorative plants, all to give the image of wealth and culture. No windows of course, couldn't have that, and the door was metal and guarded. The scarred man she 'd been put in here by, after...that night, had said something. She hadn't listened; the purpose of the room was totally clear. It was a room for traitors.

Traitors earned death by existing.

Kin very much wanted to live. Even if she was a weak, pathetic excuse for a shinobi, she didn't want to die. So she had run, she had told herself that that was a desperate attempt to prove herself. Maybe she had even believe it too, that she could do something, anything, to show she wasn't as weak and useless as she knew she was. She saw what happened to failures. She just didn't think it would ever happen to her. She was strong, she always told herself, until she wasn't. Her skills made her a useful asset, she always told herself, until they didn't.

The thoughts swirling round and round in her head, sinking deeper and deeper. Worthless, pathetic, useless, traitor. All she had to do in this fucking room was think. Think and talk to the people with leaves on their forehead about her failures.

They're from Leaf a part of her argued, they're the enemy. That part of her was growing quieter and quieter. Now she just wondered what they wanted with someone like her. Even if they were a weak village full of sentimental fools. Even they had to have standards.

She'd answered their questions, not like she knew anything important. That had been made abundantly clear by Dosu, when they were sent off to die to test some Konoha brat. Worthless. Expendable. She was already a traitor, just by being in this room, just by accepting that hug from that girl. If she went back to Sound her reward would be a quick death, if she even warranted that.

She tucked herself deeper into the soft leather of the couch, curling into a ball, her face tucked in against her knees. Something she hadn't done since she was a child. She could feel the tears stinging at the edges of her eyes, but she wouldn't cry.

She wouldn't.

Only of course she did, because she was weak, because her life was a lie. She had gone her life without tears, until she couldn't.

A woman had come, with blond hair and eyes without pupils, and the aching pain of her memories had faded. The woman had given her a strange look when they returned. She hadn't been killed, so she could only assume they hadn't found anything worth killing.

It was only later she realized the look had been pity.

A knock sounded on the door. She didn't answer.

She never did.

It always opened anyway.

But this time someone new entered, heralded by the faint swish of robes brushing along the wooden floor of the room. She glanced up from where she had buried her face in her knees to see white robes and gnarled face recognizable to any shinobi.

Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Sandaime Hokage, one of three men ever to earn the title God of Shinobi. One of the greatest shinobi to ever live, a towering legend and the leader of Konoha through three Great Wars. A doddering old fool whose sense of mercy and naivety had infested the whole of Konoha.

What did someone like him want with someone like her.

The question must have shown on her face, because the Hokage's lips quirked upwards slightly. "I see I am unexpected."

Kin could only nod dumbly.

"Good." He made his way to one of the chairs arranged across from her, settling down into it with an audible creak. "You'll have to excuse me, these bones aren't quite as young as they used to be. Not like you young ones."

"What-"

"What am I doing here?" He stroked the gray hair coating his chin, a soft twinkle in his eyes. "Well, I thought I'd come and visit the person who is causing so many reports to appear on my desk. There's something to be said for reports, but nothing beats meeting the subject of them for yourself yes?"

Wait, she's causing a stir? Why? How? She asks as much.

"You've done more than you know, talking about one of our most famous missing-nins and his...organization."

"Organization? But Otokagure is-"

"A village? Oh, I think you'll find me and my erstwhile student have much different ideas of what constitutes a village. He understood many things, but never that." Kin didn't know a smile could get that bitter. "Never that."

"I don't-"

"I've found that villages are often a reflection of those who live in them." He chewed thoughtfully on his pipe for a moment, looking every one of his seventy odd years, "And often indicative of who leads them."

Kin blinked, tossing that notion around her head, reflections. A thought struck her "Do...you want me to tell you about Sound?"

The Hokage's pipe made a clicking sound as he knocked it against his teeth, "Do you think you should?"

Because it was the right thing to do.

The words of the girl who had caused all this bubbled up, they always bubbled up, no matter how hard she tried to ignore them.

Kin didn't understand that, not really, or why she had done what she did but she was tired. She was so tired. Tired of being weak, tired of hating herself and what she's become. Tired of this room, and tired of pretending she cared at all.

And so Kin began to talk. About Sound and traitors and failures, and what the former did to the latter. About how they had found her on the street and took her away from that wretched life to give her purpose. Stripped away all the weakness they could, until she felt strong, until she felt powerful. How it was all a lie, she was weak, too pathetic to prove she wasn't expandable. How she wanted to live even when she deserved to die. It all came spilling out.

After all. She had nothing left to lose.

Week 3 - A Question of Need
"I think I may have overdone it."

You and Gai-sensei stood there for a long moment, staring at the merrily burning remains of what was mere moments ago a wooden target dummy. You had attempted to use your not-chakra to help make your kunai more debilitating by infusing them with a negligible amount of your own chakra.

It was not a resounding success.

"Well my hip young student, every piece of training is a success in its own wa-"

One of the arms of the target dummy disintegrated in a shower of sparks "Gai-sensei..."

"Yes, you did." He shifted into what you knew was his 'heartfelt encouragement' pose, "But don't give up Tenten! A technique like this takes time, and you have already made great strides in understanding the true nature of Hard Work!"

You sighed and pulled out a kunai. With it you managed to scrape out the remnants of your thrown kunai from the target dummies funeral pyre. Like you expected it was broken into half-melted pieces. You'd put way more chakra into it than you'd intended which caused...all this. You're just lucky it hadn't exploded in your hand.

The idea was from watching Neji train. If you could imbue your weapons with just the slightest edge of your own chakra so that they transferred it to whatever you hit, you could disrupt their chakra network momentarily. On top of whatever physical damage you caused. Of course, Neji's style had all the fluid grace and precision of a surgeon's scapel. Your idea had all the elegance of a sledgehammer to a support beam, but seeing as you lacked a dojutsu that gave you perfect vision of everyone's internal chakra network and the capability to process their information in real-time sledgehammer would have to do.

You had to rely whatever the not-chakra was though to help though, since your normally you wouldn't have the chakra control to even attempt something like this. Too little chakra and it was worthless, too much and well...you glanced to down at the molten remains of the kunai. It turned into an unstable grenade with no pin and an uncertain timer. Not exactly something you were comfortable holding.

So you had to rely on the not-chakra. You still weren't exactly sure what it was, just that it made you better, but even with that it was still tricky to get down. You were never the best at chakra control, it just wasn't something you enjoyed practicing, especially after your attempts to be a medical-nin fell through and your practical motivation to improve had tanked.

Your fingers closed around your intact kunai, none of those thoughts now. You wanted to improve, you had to improve. Even if it meant doing something unpleasant, you could do this, you knew you could. That faint whisper of possibility that hadn't left you since the preliminary fight. It was just a matter of getting there. You pushed yourself up and focused on the remaining quartet of target dummies.

Gai-sensei gave a blinding smile you could practically feel on your back "That's the spirit!"

~///~
As you descended the elevator leading down to the main complex of Konoha Intelligence you idly rubbed your hand. By the time the finals ended you'd definitely be sporting some new callouses on your hands, but for now you just had to deal with the bloody bandages currently wrapped around your dominant hand.

Still, your own injuries weren't the reason you were here. No, you were here to visit Kin. You had meant to do it earlier, but a combination of more pressing matters and the fact that you were sure you could (or should) had stayed your hand. Now though, you'd gotten permission from Gai-sensei, who'd in turn gotten a visit approved for you.

Which left the only obstacle between you and a friendly visit to the girl you...recruited? was passing the security check to actually enter the underground complex that formed the backbone of Konoha's Intelligence Services. A process that involved getting finger-printed, having your blood tested, stuck with a chakra needle designed to disrupt henges and genjutsu, and those were just the parts you weren't blindfolded for.

Gai-sensei had briefly explained the issues caused by defections during a hosted chunin exam, a fact that was covered by the various treaties that allowed these to happen in the first normally. Not that anyone actually followed those provisions, but an image of compliance had to be maintained. So Kin was confined to special quarters reserved for handling and debriefing defectors until the Chunin Exams had completed, both to protect her person, and her value as an intelligence asset.

Which led you to a nondescript metal door in a nondescript hallway, its only defining feature was the fact that it was one of the few doors with visible guards standing near it. Your guide stopped to talk quietly with one of the guards.

You however hesitated, did she even want to see you? She'd been in a bad spot the last time you'd seen her. Had T&I done anything to her?

The guard nodded, and you saw a keycard swipe across a pad and the faint sound of the door unlocking. Hesitantly you knocked, and it was with a faint stab of disappointment that you didn't get an answer. The guard rolled his eyes and motioned to the doorknob.

Oh.

You pushed open the door, wincing slightly as the obviously unoiled hinges let out a soft groan, to find...an apartment; A very nice apartment.

It was nicer than yours at least. Nicely carpeted, with no lack for furnishings, and a clearly used bed in the back that was almost twice as large as yours. The only thing it lacked was a kitchen. Oh, and the view that added almost 1000 ryo to your rent. And in the center of it all, gazing down at a book, was the person you came here to see.

She looks much like you remember her, even if they'd given her a change of clothes, trading in her flak vest and cargo pants for a konoha green t-shirt and sweat pants. Her Sound hitai-ate is nowhere to be seen, which you suppose is a good sign.

She glances up, and you see a faint flash of confusion on her face before her eyes widen in recognition.

"Hi." You give an awkward little wave.

She closes her book, Konoha and the Will of Fire, and sets it carefully on the table in front of her before responding. "Hey." there's an odd edge in her voice you can't quite place, "Why are you here?"

"Well, um, I just thought I'd come visit, see how you were doing you know?" You sat down in one of the chairs opposite her, doing your best to give her the brightest smile you could. The faint look of confusion on her face though tells you she probably doesn't.

"Oh."

The silence dragged on as you tried to think of something to say. Come on Tenten, what would Le-no wait bad idea Nej-okay even worse. Ino! Ino is good at this kind of stuff, what would Ino sa-

"Why?"

You blinked at the sudden interruption, "Why what?"

"Why...w-why did you help me?" Her voice cracked slightly and she gestures to the book on the table in front of her, "I'm trying to understand, but I just...can't...why me? Why help me? I'm just-...I'm not-..." She opens her mouth like she wants to say more, but nothing else comes out. She just looks at you, and you can see fear, and pain, and some very, very broken in her eyes.

How are you going to answer this?
[ ] It was the right thing to do.
[ ] Because everyone deserves a second chance.
[ ] You looked like you needed it.
[ ] Stunt?

Right so, because you chose the Kin Interlude, she's managed to recover just a touch from what you witnessed in there. She had a nice long chat with Hiruzen, which helped a little bit. Don't get me wrong, she still has capital-I Issues though.

Oh, and I hope everyone is happy with how I'm interpreting how Joint Wounding Attack works.

Week 3 - A Question of Need II
Kin's mood is clearly written all across her face, her lips pressed together in a thin, tight line as she stares at you. But for a moment, you don't see her.

You see a pale man with straight, dark purple hair falling over his hitai-ate, a teasing smirk on his face as his callused, gentle hands helping clean the skinned knees of a young girl, her hair tied up in buns.

"Because it was the right thing to do."

You echo his words then, an unbidden smile on your lips as the memory never fails to warm you. Lady Tsunade may by your role model for what kind of shinobi you want to be, but he was your model for what kind of person you wanted to be. Someone who wouldn't think twice about helping someone who needed it.

Kin looks at you uncomprehendingly, and you try to elaborate. "A long time ago, someone once did the same for a civilian orphan girl with no relatives." You pause. "That was me, by the way. The orphan, not the doer."

You pause as you remember how all those memories end, you were six when the Massacre happened. It...had hit you hard, for awhile you had thought you'd made "Mr. Policeman" mad somehow, and that was why you never saw him again. You had only realized later the real reason why.

You pull you legs up into the chair you're sitting in, taking a moment to compose yourself before continuing. You had eventually moved on, but you'd never forgotten. " Why wouldn't I help?"

Kin's face curls up in a rictus mask of skepticism at your words. Some of the fire that you saw in her match against Shikamaru returns to her eyes as glares at you. "Don't bullshit me. Not even a Leaf-" she practically spits the word, "Would go around helping their enemies because they're hurt. It's idiotic."

<Wants to convince herself as much as you>

Huh.

That raises the question of what she's trying to convince herself of. That it's stupid? That she's your enemy? That you're lying to her? You bit your lower lip as you mull through it, because whatever the answer is, it's not being particularly forthcoming.

"No." you admit with a little laugh, trying to inject some levity into the situation. "I mean, I don't think anyone who isn't a monk would go around forgiving people who were trying to hurt them. If you were attacking me, or someone I cared about, my first priority would be to stop you. But after that? Yeah, I'd do it again, if I thought I could help. Even if it was a bit risky."

Kin doesn't saying anything, preferring to turn away slightly and hide behind her hair. The only indication she was listening to you was her hands tightening into fists on her lap. The silence drags on for a long moment.

You shift a little on the chair you've sunk into, the leather cushion far softer than anything you have in your apartment. Not that that is a particularly stellar accomplishment given you only have a cheap wooden chair you bought on consignment for your desk. Maybe I should spend a little less money on weapons and more on furniture.

You pause to consider that thought.

Nah.

Maybe once you get promoted and can start taking more taking higher earning missions.

Wait no, focus Tenten. You reach out and pick the book she was reading off of the table, taking a second to touch the black Konoha leaf etched onto the front. Out of the corner of your eye you see Kin stir, but you don't look at her. Not yet at least.

"For much of my life, I have been the recipient of the kindness of strangers; wouldn't be here today if I wasn't. Everyone in the Village has those kind of stories. "The entire Village is a family" is what they tell us the Academy, but that's not really it. It's about doing the right thing for other people, even when it's hard. That's the ideal."

You lean forward, your eyes catching hers as you push the book into her hands.

"We don't always succeed, but we are supposed to try to live up to it, y'know? That's the important part."

Kin just stares at the book in her hands for a long time, her fingers tracing over the image on the cover, and when she speaks it's in a whisper so faint you can barely make it out. "But what if you don't? What if you can't?"

<Wants an answer she can understand>

You open your mouth to say something, to tell her that it doesn't matter if you succeed or not only that you try, but you close it again. That's no good, you doubt it would convince you, if you were on the other end. It didn't the last time you were, after all. When you first joined Team Gai, when all your carefully laid plans started to fall apart. It wasn't quite the same thing.

But it was close enough. So you go with what worked for you then.

"Then you're going about it wrong." Kin blinks, but you press on before her confusion has a chance to become anything more. "It's not a matter of can or can't, once you find something to believe in, some dream to work towards, you can always find a way to make it work. Even if it's not the way you wanted it to be, but you can't achieve anything you wish to do by only doing what you want to do."

Thank you Gai-sensei for that little nugget of wisdom. He may be nonsensical half the time, but it's for stuff like that you listen to him at all.

Kin is clutching the book in her arms, "But...how do I know...How do I-"

"That's not for me to tell you." You say softly, "That's something only you can figure out."

You glance around only to discover there's no actual clock in the room, still though, it's probably time for you to leave. You push yourself up out of the chair, and say your goodbyes to Kin. She gives a slight nod, but her eyes are far away, like she's looking at something only she can see. You hope that means she's considering what you said.

As you leave though, you think you see a small smile on her face.

Choose what to do on your next bit of off-time:

Well, that took longer than expected. Had to change some stuff in the stunt to actually fit.

Anyway, here's how the vote is going to work, you pick who you want to spend time with next (it can be multiple people for the record). They have to be people Tenten has
met before. For some of them you can also select something you'd like to do with them (like going shopping with Ino and Sakura for example.) for a bonus, or do something on your own (for a random encounter).

For this vote I'll probably be a bit more active in providing feedback on votes, just to give you guys a sense of what I'm expecting.

Week 3 - Final Moments
You were going to die. Your lungs burned in your chest, feeling like they want to claw their way to freedom at the end of your throat with every breath you took. Your throat was dry as the dirt road you were seconds away from collapsing onto, and felt twice as coarse. You had long ago ran out of water, and right now every breath of air, sweet, precious air, felt like torment. Your legs had lost all feeling, only the faint twinge of pain indicative of an oncoming cramp was left to remind you they still existed. Well, besides the monolithic, all-encompassing feeling of exhaustion, but you felt that everywhere so it didn't count.

Worst of all this was entirely your fault.

You're not entirely sure what had possessed you to ask Gai-sensei of all people for tips to improve your exercise routine, but whatever temporary insanity had possessed you was certainly coming home to roost now. You stop jogging, to busy doubling over and trying to keep the contents of your breakfast in your stomach to do much more than take deep breaths.

"Tenten!"

Speaking of insanity.

"It is only the twentieth lap around Konoha! Don't tell me your tired now! I know a student as youthful and hip as you can manage at least 200!"

You definitely don't make the incredibly rude gestures you desperately want to. You're beginning to think Lee isn't the only one going stir-crazy with him in the hospital. You don't have the ability to muster a proper response, so instead you just hold up a hand as you suck in air.

When your heart rate finally returns to something vaguely resembling a normal rhythm you take a deep breath and push yourself up. "Gai-sensei? Can we just walk for a bit? I had something I wanted to talk to you about."

He arches an eyebrow but, by the mercy of whatever higher power may be listening, he stops jogging.

"I just wanted to know how you handle it."

"It?"

"Just, the pain, people getting hurt. With Lee, and Neji, and now Kin too, everyone just seems so screwed up." You take a deep, shuddering breath, letting some of the worry and anxiety you've been feeling for the past couple week flare up. "It's just, it's all happening so fast, and they need my help but I don't know what to do."

Once upon a time you'd have never dreamed of asking your flagrantly emotional sensei on how to handle things like this. Sometimes it seems like the man burst into tears at the drop of a hat, which was as close to the complete opposite of your own attempts to handle your emotions as possible.

That had changed when he'd told you all the story of the Eternal Genin. The story itself had been the usual Gai-sensei fare, extolling the virtues of Hard Work and how it could help you surpass impossible obstacles. Only, it had seemed different from the usual stories. More personal.

So you had done a little research on your own time. The Eternal Genin had been Maito Dai, Gai-sensei's father, the genin team he protected Gai-sensei's own, The Swordsmen, the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, during one of the minor conflicts between Kiri and Konoha after the Third Shinobi War.

You also found out how the story ended.

Gai-sensei was quiet for long time.

"Tenten, you have to remember what your friendship means to people. You do more than you know, giving them support. Continue to do so and your friendship will form the foundation for new, fresh leaves to sprout! The time when a new spring comes and the fresh leaves bud… is the peak of youth!"

At this point you've lost track of all the things Gai-sensei has called "the peak of youth", but the fire in his eyes as he compliments you is heartening. Your team had problems before, your remember when Lee and Neji were first on the team together. You'd managed to get through that, and yeah, it wasn't as bad as now, but you got through it.

Which means you can get through it again.

"Thanks Gai-sen-"

Then he started jogging again.

"Come on Tenten! 189 more laps and we'll be finished warming up!"

Oh right, he's dead to you.

Several hours later, when you'd managed to tear your free time away from Gai-sensei and his legendary commitment to exercise and a cold shower had wiped away the evidence of your temporary insanity you found yourself in an Akimichi owned barbecue house. You blink as you enter, your eyes taking a couple seconds to adjust from the significantly brighter outside. It really is a busy day outside, pity you spent it trying to keep up with a complete maniac. The tingle of a seal maintained chakra barrier washes over your skin, and with it the heat of the exterior drops away.

Your eyes roam the interior, noting the polished wood decor and indefinably expensive looking paintings giving the place an air of understated opulence. You feel acutely underdressed; this place was definitely way outside the budget of a genin. Especially your budget, which left you cooking at home most of the time to save on money.

Definitely more expensive than that place Gai-sensei took us to last time.

You flush a little as you realize the portly lady at the front desk has been examining you with interest while you looked around, and approach her with an awkward smile.

"Excuse me ma'am; I have an appointment with-"

She interrupts with a professional smile. "Tenten, right? She said to keep an eye out for you."

A waiter-waitress, you realize on a closer look- appears in response to some unseen signal.

"Asuna, please show her to private booth 3."

You are led into the back corner of the restaurant and ushered past a heavy red curtain which separated this booth from the rest of the restaurant. A woman sits inside, an array of food already around her as she picks at a small bowl of rice in front of her. She's dressed, well not casually given the unzipped flak vest, but modestly. You make a special note of the tight sleeves that cover the upper parts of her arms.

And most important, long purple hair.

Gai-sensei had a lot to say about ANBU, and being Gai-sensei, that meant you heard a lot about ANBU. You're pretty sure the entire village has heard his opinions on ANBU. He didn't like what the Mask did to the people who wore it. To hear him tell it, you couldn't help but agree. Necessary as the ANBU may be, that didn't mean you had to like it, and you certainly didn't plan on ever joining it.

The women in front of you though just looks tired. She glances up as you enter, and you note the bags under her light brown eyes, with a look that has become distressingly common in the past few weeks. She gives you a slight nod as she picks at the plate of food in front of her and you slide your way into the booth.

"Thanks for agreeing to meet me." She gives you a smile, but you can tell her hearts not in it. Not that you wouldn't have trouble mustering a genuine smile if you were in her shoes. She gestures to the arrangement of food in front of her, "Help yourself."

You fumble slightly as you pick some of the food and place it on a nearby place. You're actually starving, since you haven't had a chance to eat since Gai-sensei pulled you away on your little misadventure into the world of extreme physical activity, but you're here for a reason.

One immensely awkward and depressing reason.

"Sooooo..."

Do you tell her you know she is in ANBU?
[ ] Yes
[ ] No

What do you tell her about how Hayate died?
[ ] The whole truth, and nothing but - You didn't see much, and if he had last words you didn't hear them. Not likely to provide much closure, but you're also not going to be telling a lie.
[ ] Providing closure, through creative interpretation - Give her something to latch onto, no one else was there when he died, no one else would have to know if you...embellished a little.

I'm not sure when the next update is going to be, the next two weeks are going to be pretty crazy for me since it's finals season and I have like a bajillion papers due. We'll see how things shake out though.

May take the time to go back an edit all my earlier updates for quality like I've always been sorta planning to do.

"Soooo..." you start, drawing out the word as you glance around, both to paper over your own nervousness and also to check out the surrounding-

"The booth is secure if you're wondering." Yuugao taps the curtain cutting you off from the rest of the restaurant with a hand holding a glass of water before taking a sip. "Seals are woven into this thing to cancel noise, plus it's rated to stop anything short of an explosive tag going off." Her glass hits the table with a soft click and you conceal a soft blush of embarrassment. "Now, Cat probably told you-"

"I know you're Cat!" You blurt out, "I mean-ah...you were kinda um-" Goddammit Tenten.

She just stares at you for a second, her face totally blank, before her gaze drops to the table in front of you. Oh no, did you mess something up? Were you not suppose to-You open your mouth to say something when you notice her shoulders subtly shaking. She's laughing. What.

When she lifts her head back up she has to wipe a tear our of her eyes, and you see the first spark of something positive in them since you got here. "Thanks, I needed that." She laughs again, not much more than a giggle, "'You were kinda obvious' she says."

"What." You stare uncomprehending before an idea dawns on you, "Wait you mean you were doing it on-"

"Purpose?" She cuts you off with a slight smile, "Yes. It's so much easier if you know, but I can't just tell you. We have regs about that, but if you figure it out on your own..." She pauses to take another sip of water, "Well, that happens all the time."

Your expression must have been fairly clear on your face, because she just waved her hand. "Don't acted so surprised, I've been in ANBU a long time, and this is practically the first trick recruits learn."

You're not entirely sure how to respond to that, so you say the first thing that comes to mind. "I'm not surprised at that, just that you have a sense of humor is all."

She snorts lightly, just slightly more than a sigh "You're one of Gai's aren't you?" She doesn't give you a chance to answer before the edges of her eyes crinkle slightly in a faint smile, "You'd be surprised what we can get up to, stuff like this is common. I remember when I-" Her face practically crumples "...had to tell Hayate..."

Oh right.

The reason you're here.

You blow out a long breath as your memory stretches back to that night. "I...well, okay...I'm not sure how much help I'll be. It's n-not, um, I'll tell you what I can."

Yuugao's mouth sets into a grim line, "I don't care if it's not much, but I need to know." She picks at the food in front of her for a few seconds before looking you dead in the eyes, "Please, just tell me what you can you. The mission reports, they don't say much, but you were there. Please."

You fidget slightly under the intensity of her gaze, and the memory of your failure, but you press forward. "I...I got lucky, that's why I was there. I don't know what mission he was on, you probably know that better than me, but whatever it was he found out what he needed to know."

Yuugao's eyes widen at that, and you see something click in her head, but that expression doesn't last long. "He got caught didn't he?"

"Yeah" You brush the pieces of food around your plate, your appetite completely gone despite the succulent smell rising off the grill in front of you. "He did."

You see Yuugao's hands tighten into fists on her side of the table.

"He ran off, didn't have much a chance of a head start. That's when I lost sight of him. I tried to follow when I could, but...I..." You try to think of why you waited, why you hadn't been quicker to follow. It's true you'd been torn between following and just sneaking away to report what you saw. That wasn't why you'd hesitated though, that hadn't even been a choice in the end.

No, you had been terrified. That was why; that was the real reason. You say as much.

"When I was following, I heard the scream, and the roaring wind." You shiver slightly at the memory, between that and the preliminaries, the feeling of the wind playing over your skin like thousands of miniature knives, threatening to tear the air from your lungs. You'll never look at the wind the same way again. "It was a wind jutsu. I didn't see it but..."

"You know what a wind jutsu sounds like."

"Yeah."

"When I got to him it was too late to do anything." You continue in a small voice, "He was already bleeding out when I got there, he bled out just after I got there." Maybe if you weren't such a fuck-up at medicine you could've done something. Lady Tsunade could've done something, you're sure of it.

"He couldn't talk, his lungs were punctured, but he did give me something. He drew a musical note, that was probably in the report." You stop short there, mouth open to say something more, only to realize you don't know what to say. Someone is dead, and you can't help but feel it was partly your fault. You didn't kill him no, but you weren't good enough to save him. You can only hope what you did get was enough to make a difference.

"It was." Yuugao's voice is barely present. At some point she'd stopped looking at you, instead choosing to stare down at her hands, her hair falling front of her face.

"Oh."

The silence hangs in the air between the two of you. Her hands fiddling with a chopstick in front of her, your own stomach feeling like it's soaking in guilt. You had tried to move past it, to forget, it's what they taught in the academy. You couldn't save everyone, people died, it was just a part of being shinobi.

You really wish you could internalize that.

"I'm sorry" You start, "If...If I had been better I c-could've don-"

"Who?" She cuts you off. The impact of her fist on the table sharp and clear, a slightly maniac look in her eyes.

"Wha-"

"Who did it? You never mentioned who you think did it."

Sorry this took so long, but real life is crazy right now for me. Next update likely won't be until Wednesday next week at the earliest, just because I have a shitton of stuff due for classes. But then, after that I'm in the homestretch for finals. So hopefully once April is over I'll have more time to devote to this.
