ANBU are usually portrayed as controlled, implacable agents of the Hokage's will. Everything disappears behind the cold visage of the masks they wear. So it's usually difficult to conceive of them as having human foibles, especially since most of them go to great lengths to disabuse people of those notions. But sitting across from her, seeing the look in her eyes as she asked you who killed her boyfriend, you find it easy to picture her stalking rooftops on a quest for revenge.
Somehow, you're less surprised than you thought you'd be.
"I don't actually
know" you say slowly, fiddling with your chopsticks on the table. It's the truth,
kinda, but a half-truth settles in your stomach like a lie all the same. You don't know for sure
who killed Hayate, but it's academic really. It could only have been two people, both of whom you saw. You can feel the chopsticks begin to strain in your hands as you try and pull on something, anything to help you out here. "I included everything I saw and suspected in the report I made, and I'm not confident that I was able to see through any disguise put up by someone capable of catching and killing a special jounin in forty seconds. And I'm under orders not to say more than I've told you."
Looking up, you meet her tired brown eyes with your own, "If I did know, though, it still wouldn't be
right to tell you. Gai-sensei would be disappointed in me if I pointed a grieving comrade at a convenient target." For a moment a picture of Kin as you saw her on the rooftop flashes through your mind.
Focus. "
I would be disappointed in me. And while I didn't know Hayate in life, I doubt he'd want you risking your life for this. Nor would your friends. Or teammates. Or bosses."
Those words are the best you can come up with, but you feel like something's missing. Would those words convince you, if you were in her position? If someone killed Neji or Lee, would that sentiment dissuade you from seeking out their killers? You hope it could.
You don't think it would though. All you can hope for is that you never have to test that theory.
Yuugao is quiet for a long time, you can see her slowly working her jaw. You can only hope that means she's seriously considering what you said. She takes a sip from her glass, and sets it down, the glass hitting the hardwood table with a soft clink. "You know, the Sandaime said something similar when I asked him the same question."
"I-" You cut yourself off as you process just what she just said. "
What? Then why did you ask me?!"
"Because I wanted to see if you tell me,
and to see if you had any details I didn't already know."
"But, you were trying to find who to kill?"
She smiles thinly, a smile filled with teeth and devoid of anything resembling happiness, "Oh
absolutely, I will see that justice is done. One day, I will find who did it, and I
will kill them." She gives you a hard look, "I know they're out of my league, but the first rule you need to learn is no one is invincible. Anyone can die. It's all a matter of have the patience to find out how."
You want to say something more, but from the look on her face you don't think you can make much more progress. At least you can probably trust she's not going to go running off to try and get revenge immediately. Then you notice something that she said, "Wait, you want to see if I would tell you? Is this all some sort of test?" You pause, "...did I pass?"
She gives you flat look, "So you're asking if Konoha would exploit my grief to try and trick you into revealing information, when you already know I wanted the information to plot revenge?"
You slouch slightly, eyes focused on the table, "Well when you put it like that..."
"Right. Now, thank you for agreeing to meet with me, but I have to go." She pauses slightly before pulling out a small slip of paper and handing it to you. "I do owe you a favor though, if you ever need something, call here. I'll do what I can to help."
You take the slip of paper with only slightly trembling hands. An ANBU agent now owes you a favor. What is your life. Suddenly though a thought occurs to you, as you look at the twin swords strapped to her back. "You're a weapons user too right? Do you think you could give me some help?"
She freezes up slightly at the mention of teaching, just barely but it's noticeable enough. "We'll...have to see."
You try to conceal your disappointment, but you also feel like you just stepped in something you really shouldn't have. "No no, if you can't it's alright, you must be really busy." You hurriedly backtrack.
"It's not-" She shakes her head slightly, "I'll get back to, I might be able to."
The lack of a definite rejection lifts you spirits some, and you give her a small wave as she pushes her way out of the curtains.
Only for her to stick her head back into the booth. "Oh and you passed the test by the way, if you had told me, you probably wouldn't have gotten promoted. Also this entire conversation is classified. Don't talk about it. See you around!"
Oh that's good, you'll need to keep that in mi-...Wait
what?!

It turns out asking Neji to help with your training may have been a mistake. Not because he's bad, Neji's not bad at anything he does, but because he's preferred method of teaching is hands on demonstration. Which inevitably results in more bruises than you can count.
You think he might be just a little resentful you're cutting into his own training time.
"Dodge!"
You whip around and go cross-eyed as you just barely managed to duck under the jyuken strike, the chakra coated fingers passing a hairs-breadth from the bridge of your nose. You don't manage to dodge the follow-up strike into your left kidney. With more than enough chakra coating the strike to make the hit known. You stumble as the pain radiates through your lower stomach, falling flat on your back.
Just a little bit resentful.
At least it's still a beautiful day for you to enjoy while you get the stuffing beaten out of you. Even this late into the afternoon the sky is still a deep blue. After finishing the rest of the food Yuugao had ordered, and definitely not after having a minor freakout over the fact you had almost blown you promotion, you'd ended up here.
A silhouette fell over you, pale eyes visible through the shade. "You're still not observing your surrounding enough. That's the third time I've managed to get into a blind spot."
"Easy for you to say Mr. Magic Eyes" you grumble, "Now help me up. Does this really have to involve you hitting me?"
"Yes" is the blunt reply.
He does help you up though, before just as quickly dropping into another stance. "You may never be able to match the sight of the Byakugan, but that is no reason to be lax in your training. You can do better."
You flinch slight as you drop back into a stance opposite him, yeah you're definitely going to have a bruise tomorrow. Wonderful. What's worse is he's right, you can feel something there, a faint tingle at the edge of your consciousness at various moments in the fight. You can only feel it when you concentrate, but it's there, and it's getting stronger.
Neji was insufferable like that sometimes.
What was more worrying was the fact that you hadn't seen him smile once since you got here. He wasn't normally one for smiles at the best of time, but usually you could at least get his lips to curl up once or twice whenever you talked. You think he looks much better when he smiled.
No though, ever since the preliminaries he'd been even more severe than usual. Which you didn't think was possible until it happened. At least he'd started to talk to you again, but ever since his match with Hinata.
Hinata, that's another thing you've been meaning to do. You remember Ino had mentioned she'd been checked out of Konoha General, which was good, but you're just not sure how to handle that. You don't think they have "sorry-your-cousin-who-is-my-teammate-tried-to-kill-you" cards at the shop. Even for shinobi that seems like a niche case. Ideally, Neji would apologize. You mentally cringe thinking about the effort that would take.
You also physically cringe because another strike got past your guard and hit your shoulder joint.
You also realize you don't know where you'd even find her. Maybe Neji would know? You duck under another palm strike, only to hiss in pain as he hits your shoulder again, asshole. The worst he could do is attack you, which he's currently doing anyway.
"Hey Neji, do you know where I could find Hinata?"
That stops him dead, and you see an expression you rarely see on Neji's face, pure confusion. "What?!" Then the confusion gives way to an expression much more familiar, disdain "Why do you want anything to do with that pathetic excuse for a shinobi?"
Because I want to apologize for you trying to kill her is what you don't say. Neji had explained his reasoning, after a fashion. It, well you guess it did make sense, in some twisted way. You're fairly sure he could have made an almost as effective argument without trying to stop her heart. So instead you say "She was very badly injured in the preliminaries." by you, "I just wanted to see how she was doing, I heard she was just released from the hospital."
"You care too much" he scoffs.
"Wouldn't be me if I didn't!"
The two of you stare at one another for a moment. Unlike most of the times you've done this though, Neji's the one to crack first. "Fine, I don't care. She should be at the Hyuuga Clan Compound. If she's allowed visitors, you should just need to ask for her."
You relax slightly, "Thanks Neji I reall-"
You're fairly sure the fact he catches you in the throat next is just a coincidence.
Asshole.
The two of you end up spending two more soul-crushing hours on that training field before Neji lets you leave. Well, soul-crushing for you, Neji experienced what you hazard is a feeling closer to "annoyance" in character. You did manage to get in a few hits of your own, mostly by cheating, and also because that wasn't point of the exercise.
As you part ways though, you consider attempting to convince Neji to come with you to visit Hinata.

Well, I have a slight break in finals season, and everything ends next week so hopefully I have more free time then. Then again, I might do something stupid like start another quest because I have too many ideas. Which would tank my free time.
Oh well, on the subject of "bad ideas that seemed like a good idea at the time" Princess of Blades now has a Discord server. Join the conversation* now. Or not. I don't care**.
* By "conversation" I of course mean "listen to Crilltic's vague plans for what he's going to do next update while he thinking of them" ,"shitposting at all hours" or a combination of the two.
** I care immensely
I've also had some people who I trust come forward and raise some issues that are keeping them from getting truly involved in the discussion. Namely, that the votes themselves are too mechanics focused. Which is something I've worried about for a significant amount of time. So I'm considering (now that I have more free time, or at least will after Wednesday) of doing a complete overhaul. I'd still keep the Exalted flavor of course, and Charms/Jutsu etc. But I'd move the stats over to something akin to what WSiA/Number None or Seeing Red do.
Thoughts?
