"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...
born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...
and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...
and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...
the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies...."

You couldn't sleep. The lit dial of your fat cousin's watch was telling you that it was ten minutes until midnight. Ten minutes until your eleventh birthday. You're in a horrible little house, more of a shack really, on an island off the coast. First time you saw the sea! It should have been more exciting, but the circumstances that brought you here overwhelmed the excitement you could have felt at seeing the ocean. Your uncle seemed to almost be suffering a mental breakdown, all because of some letters! To be fair they were addressed to you, and that's the first time that has ever happened.

Five minutes.

You'd think that he would be used to the odd things about you. Shrinking a sweater, changing your teacher's hair blue, appearing on a roof, talking to snakes! But no, this had freaked him out quite a bit more. When the first showed up, addressed to your cupboard, he just took it away and got rid of it. Then more came and he slept near the door to grab them. Then even more came! Through the fireplace, in the eggs, even to the hotel you'd gone to to get away from them. Whoever is sending them must really want to talk to you.

Three minutes.

Eventually, in his panic, he arranged to bring your... Relations out to the middle of nowhere, while a storm is raging. Hard enough to make it sound like the rock the shack is on is crumbling into the sea. Ah, well.

One minute.

One minute and you'll be eleven. Not that it matters. No presents or cake for you. But you're used to that.

Thirty seconds

Maybe you should wake up your cousin and annoy him.

Ten... Nine... Eight... Seven... Six... Five... Four... Three... Two...

Happy birthday to-BOOM!

The door is knocked off it's hinges by a powerful knock, revealing the silhouette of a large man! But that's not the only thing that shocked you, because...

[ ] ... No, wait. That's it. And it's quite enough, thank you! (Canon Harry Potter. You're a wizard, Harry!)
[ ] Timeskip to Diagon Alley
[ ] Remain in the hut.

[ ] You... Remember.(Time-travel Harry from the final battle back to eleven years old. Choices acting on meta-knowledge don't require as much in character reasoning.)

[ ] You see something above his head, [ Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of the Keys and Grounds. Level ??] (Gamer Harry. Hopefully this doesn't require too much explanation.)
[ ] Optional-Choose a game system if you do not want the standard from The Gamer(D&D, Shadowrun, Dragon Age, Fate, etc.)

[ ] He's holding a skull with glowing orange eyes. (Harry gets Bob from the Dresden Files! How? Space-timey wimey stuff.)

[ ] Write In-Options are nearly limitless.

It's a Harry Potter quest! Obviously. And you get to choose the cross-over(if any) and ultimately change things. Because it would be a really boring quest if you didn't and I'd just end up directing you to the books at that point. That said, most any source for a cross-over is allowed, though it doesn't change the setting, just Harry and what he can do or what he gets. If you choose to write in Worm(Which I could probably flub my way through but I don't know much about it) then it wouldn't take place in Brockton Bay or anything. It would just be Harry getting a superpower of some classification. There are some settings I cannot do, simply because I do not know enough, such as Exalted.

If a setting I don't know enough about is voted to be the source, I will let you all know and you can choose to pick a different source, or put up with my bumbling through and researching as I go.

Yer a Gamer, Harry!
There's something... Floating above his head.

[Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of the Keys and Grounds. Level ??]

That's not normal. I mean, it's not like your cousin, who jolted awake as the door was pounded on, has... Oh...

[Dudley Dursley, Bullying Cousin. Level 3]

Well. It seems your relations were right. You are a freak. You should probably be freaking out or devastated by this revelation, but you are oddly calm. And- Oh, wait. The big man, no Rubeus Hagrid, is talking to you.

"An' here's Harry! Las' time I saw you, you was only a baby. Yeh look a lot like yer dad, but yeh've got yer mom's eyes."

At this point your uncle, whose entrance you seemed to have missed, distracted by your seeing things, started making demands, rather a silly thing to do to a man as big as this Hagrid fellow. But then, he was holding a rifle. Though not for long as Hagrid reached out, twisted it into a knot, and chucked it away.

"Ah, shut up, Dursley, yeh great prune."

Taking the moment of shock and distraction you look toward your aunt and uncle, seeing more of those floating words.

[Vernon Dursley, Managerial Bully. Level 10]

[Petunia Dursley, Gossiping Housewife. Level 7]

"Anyway - Harry." Hagrid's voice draws your attention back to him. "A very happy birthday to yeh. Got sommat fer yeh here - I mighta sat on it at some point, but it'll taste all right."

Then he's presenting a somewhat squished box to you, which upon opening reveals the first birthday cake you can remember getting! Looking up at him you try to thank him, but your mouth seems to have other ideas. "What's going on?"

"True," Hagrid chuckles. "I haven't introduced meself. Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts."

At least those floating words are accurate. What follows is a veritable storm of questions and arguments, that end with your uncle not really getting anywhere with his. Oh yes. And you're a wizard! And so were your parents! That's a bit of a shock! Though maybe that's what all the floating words are about. You take a letter being offered to you by Hagrid and start to ask him about them, only to find yourself unable. Then a blue box pops up in your field of view.

[Alert:] Discussions of The Gamer ability cannot be performed until after the intro sequence of The Keeper of The Keys.

After a couple of seconds that box fades, and you open your letter, only for another box to block your view of what is written there.

[Quest Alert:] Owl Hogwarts to notify them that you will be attending.
-Completion: 5xp, Title: First Year Student, Diagon Alley.
-Failure: 1xp, Title: Reluctant Wizard.

That's... Odd. And this one has boxes at the bottom that say 'accept' and 'decline'. But the second is greyed out. As the box doesn't seem to be going away on it's own like the other, you reach up and poke the accept box, which causes it to disappear. Finally, you can read your letter!

Hogwarts School
of Whitchcraft and Wizardry

Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock,
Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Wizards)

Dear Mr. Potter,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on September 1. We await your owl by no later than July 31.
Yours Sincerely,
Minverva Mcgonagall,
Deputy Headmistriss

Following that there's more questions, one which prompts Hagrid to write a note and send off an owl which gets you that completion reward that was mentioned. And you learn more about your parents, and what happened to them. Apparently some guy named Voldemort killed them! All this culminates in Dudley ending up with a pig tail. It suits him, really. And it proves that this magic thing is real, if the floating boxes weren't enough. Eventually though, you go to sleep, tired and apparently having a big day the next day.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
You have completed the intro and can now review your stats, traits, and abilities!

It seems that even in your dreams there is no escape from floating words. But what does it mean by st- Oh.

Once you have finished with that you finally drift off to actual sleep. And before you know it you are being woken by a tapping noise. And the floating words are still there. Not just a weird dream.

The tapping draws your eyes toward the window, where you see an owl, a newspaper in it's beak. You start to get up when you realize... The dream said the intro sequence was over. You can talk about this... Ability.

But do you want to? It's... Weird.

[ ] Yes...
-[ ] To Hagrid! Maybe it's a wizard thing!
-[ ] To Dudley! It seems like those video games he plays... Maybe he can help out?
-[ ] To Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon! Because they already know you're a freak.

[ ] No!(Skip to Diagon Alley.)

Welcome to the quest hu- Er... Diagon Alley
Whilst dreaming you selected Magic of the Multiverse, figuring that something that gives you more skills can't hurt. Though given how your relatives treat you there's no guarantee you'll ever be able to get books to learn from.

After a few minutes of thought, only mildly interrupted by the constant tapping on the window you decide not to discuss your ability with anyone right away. Your relations already know you're a freak, and you don't want to put off the only person who has really been nice to you(And given you a birthday cake!) so soon after meeting him.

So instead you get up and make your way to the window, opening it and taking the newspaper from the owl. Expecting it to fly off you're surprised when it instead dives to Hagrid's coat, picking at it.

"Don't do that."

As you try to wave the owl away it continues attacking the coat.

"Pay him," comes the voice of the large man on the sofa. After a few seconds of non-comprehension on your part he continues. "He wants payin' for deliverin' the paper. Look in the pockets."

Fishing through the pockets, and finding a multitude of items, you eventually find some odd coins.

"Give him five Knuts. The little bronze ones."

After counting out the coins and putting them into a pouch on the owl's leg, the owl flies off.

Sitting up Hagrid says, "Right. Best be off. Lots to do today, gotta get up ter London an' buy all yer stuff fer school."

After a brief conversation about your lack of money, and where you're going you and Hagrid head out. Taking a boat, then a train to London you spend your time messing with the odd boxes your freakishness has given you, something you have plenty of time for as Hagrid says there's no rush at the moment. After finding the various screens and familiarizing yourself with their layout, you've figured out how to bring them up, dismiss them, and manipulate them without drawing too much attention. Then you end up studying Hagrid. He is a rather large man, larger than normal, as you can tell from the stares he gets. After a few minutes of scrutiny a box pops up.

[Alert:] Through intent observation a new ability has been created!

You dismiss the box and open your abilities menu, curious what this has done.

[Observe:] Study a person or object to gain more detail about them.

That is a surprisingly unhelpful description. Of course you'll get more detail if you study someone! But, none the less, perhaps you should try it out. Looking at Hagrid you softly murmur "Observe."

[Name: Rubeus Hagrid
Title: Keeper of the Keys and Grounds
Level: ??
Race: Observe not high enough.
Stats: Observe not high enough.
Abilities: Observe not high enough.
Relationship: Observe not high enough. ]

That didn't tell you much. Though it looks like later on you'll be able to learn more from using it, once you've practiced it.

After passing the time learning about your ability as best you can alone and talking with Hagrid about being a Wizard you arrive in London, at a grubby-looking pub. When you walk in a man behind the bar asks, "The usual, Hagrid?"

"Can't, Tom, I'm on Hogwarts business," comes the reply, with a hand hitting your shoulder and nearly knocking you to the ground.

"Bless my soul. Harry Potter... What an honor." The bartender's words seem to be the signal the bar was waiting for as suddenly everyone moves toward you. They're all trying to shake your hand and welcome you back. Another window pops up.

[Alert:] Title Gained- The-Boy-Who-Lived(All reputation/relationship gains and losses are doubled)

Quickly and subtly dismissing the window you turn your attention back to the crowd. You...

[ ] Are a bit creeped out. You're not sure about this fame thing Hagrid mentioned.
[ ] Enjoy the attention. It's more than you've usually gotten!
[ ] Are terrified and try to hide behind Hagrid.

Eventually, after meeting a number of people, including a stuttering man who is apparently going to be teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts at your school, Hagrid ushers you toward the back. You find yourself in a small courtyard, where there's nothing but a trashcan and a few weeds. Hagrid mutters to himself before tapping on a wall three times with his umbrella. And then the wall seems to split and shift, and before long you're facing an archway large enough even for Hagird!

You wander down the streets after Hagrid, looking this way and that. So many different shops, selling cauldrons, broomsticks, books, owls, and more! And then you find yourself facing a large, white building, with short, toothy creatures in scarlet and gold uniforms on either side. Walking into what, according to Hagrid, is Gringotts Bank, you find another set of doors and inscription above them.

Enter, stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of greed,
For those who take, but do not earn,
Must pay most dearly in their turn.
So if you seek beneath our floors
A treasure that was never yours,
Thief, you have been warned, beware
Of finding more than treasure there.

Hagrid then leads the way to a goblin teller and mentions taking money out of your account and fetching another item, one he won't tell you about. After fishing out the key to your vault, a process that seems to take long enough to annoy the goblin, another goblin is called over, one named Griphook. You're lead to a cart and after a wild ride end up outside your vault. The goblin opens the vault, revealing piles and piles of coins. Gold, silver, and brozne. And it's yours!

"The gold ones are Galleons. Seventeen silver Sickles to a Galleon, and twenty-nine Knuts to a Sickle. It's easy enough." Hagrid explains this as you start to pick up coins to put into your bag. A bag that doesn't seem to gain weight as the coins are deposited. Instead you notice a small window that pops up.

Thirteen Galleons added to Currency.

That's... Interesting. Noticing the bag is still seemingly empty you set about gathering up as many of the coins as you can before Hagrid stops you, saying, "That should be enough fer a couple o' terms. More than, really."

Two hundred Galleons, thirty Sickles and twelve Knuts added to Currency.

Back in the cart you speed down to another vault. Seven hundred and thirteen. When the goblin opens the door, a process that apparently traps anyone who isn't a Gringotts Goblin inside if they try, it reveals nothing but a single small package, which Hagrid moves to collect.

When you arrive back up at the surface Hagrid is looking a little green. "Listen, Harry, would yeh mind if I slipped off fer a pick-me-up in the Leaky Cauldron? I hate them Gringotts Carts. If yeh jus' tell me where yer gonna be, I'll meet yeh there."

Books and Bushy Hair
You tell Hagrid you want to check out the bookstore, and he nods his head, still looking a bit green, before wandering toward the archway that leads into the alley.

As you make your way into the shop you think over the reaction you got when you walked into the Leaky Cauldron. It was odd, all those people wanting to talk to you. You. Certainly not something you're used to, and you don't think you much care for it. Realizing that more people might be able to recognize you you reach up, using your fingers to try and comb your bangs to cover your scar. Certainly something that identifies you, and to think, you used to like it just because it was different.

Looking around inside Florish and Blotts you see a lot of books, though there doesn't look like there's much organization. At least there aren't any signs to let one know what is where. But the books on your list are sorted and stacked in easy view, so you won't have to go hunting for them. Picking one up at random, The Standard Book of Spells (Grade 1), you're only a little surprised when another of those windows pop up.

[Alert:] You have gained a skillbook for [Charms]. Would you like to use it?

Before you can do anything about that, however, another window comes up.

[Alert:] You have acquired an item that isn't yours, and use of it could lead to being caught as a thief.

Seeing that you dismiss both windows, not using the book, before setting the book down and look around the shop with wide eyes. If that Magic of the Multiverse trait you picked up is accurate, you could use any of the books in here to learn things That is daunting and incredible all at once. But it's not going to stop you from looking around the shop.

You explorations reveal books for all the years at Hogwarts, a collection of books on household charms, history books, potions books, and more. And then your eyes fall on something absolutely horrifying.

The Harry Potter section.

Harry Potter and the Naughty Nundu
Harry Potter and the Angry Acromantula
Harry Potter and the Dastardly Dragon
Harry Potter and...

There's so many of them. You think... Maybe Hagrid understated this fame of yours when he told you about it.

Quickly vacating that area of the store you continue to look around. And between the distraction of trying to cope with the idea of a book series about you and trying to figure out what books would be best, you end up too distracted to notice the pile of books with bushy hair you end up colliding with.

With a soft 'Oof' you and the books with bushy hair end up collapsing to the ground, revealing that behind all those books, the true possessor of the hair is actually a girl about your age.

"Oh, I'm terribly sorry! I was just distracted by all the books I need to get! I'm the first in my family who is magical, you see, and so there's so much I need to catch up on! I've already memorized the course books, but I'm not sure if that's going to be enough, considering that those with magical parents will already know a lot, and... Oh, terribly sorry. My name is Hermione Granger. What's yours?"

[ ] "Harry Potter."
[ ] On second thought, you don't want her reacting the way the people in the pub did... "Maxwell Smith."

Books, books, bo-Ice cream!
"Ah... I'm Harry Potter," you reply to the bushy haired girl, Hermione.

"Are you really?" asks Hermione. "I know all about you, of course. I got a few extra books for background reading, and you're in Modern Magical History and The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts and Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth Century."

"Am I?" You ask, a little surprised. You're sure that if you didn't have your [Gamer's Mind] you'd be a bit more shocked. Though not as much as you were when you saw those Harry Potter books.

"Goodness, didn't you know? I'd have found out everything I could if it was me," replies Hermione.

Standing up you start to help her gather up her books, subtly dismissing alert windows as they pop up. "Ah... No. I didn't even know I was a wizard until last night. Figured I'd better learn as much about being one as I can, you know?"

"Oh, I know! We're going to be so far behind, and we're going to have to work hard to catch up while still doing the same amount of classwork as the others in our year, and.. and..."

She seems to be panicking a little, so you...

[ ] Calm her down and suggest getting together to study, before and during the school year, if you can get away from your relatives.(Will take up one time slot in later choices.)
[ ] Just calm her down and tell her you will see her at school.(Leaves time-slot free, but removes opportunities for further interaction.)

Eventually you do get her calmed down, and then her parents show up, Dr.s Granger and Granger. You didn't catch their first names. Once she leaves the store a blue box pops up:

[Alert:] +20 relationship with Hermione Granger

Huh. You reach up and dismiss the box, planning to look into that later.

That done you begin to gather books that you think look useful, eventually making your way to the counter with the following:

Two sets of the first year course books.
One set of the second year course books.
A book on household charms.
Two books that deal with mental magics.
A bundled set of books on runes, another on arithmancy, another on Care of Magical Creatures, and a few books on wizarding culture and law.
And with a shudder you also gathered up the five different books in the Harry Potter series. If nothing else you can set them on fire later.

While on the way to the counter you take your time, idly looking around and muttering 'observe'. An action that nets you some levels in that ability, and ends up revealing something a bit odd. Over an empty section of shelf the words [The Invisible Book of Invisiblity] appear. Making your way over you reach up, and find your hand actually encountering something in the blank space. Wrapping your fingers around it as best you can you give a tug, and pull what feels like a book, oddly enough, down to yourself. After a moment of consideration, and dismissing the popup that accompanies the book, you take it to the counter with the others.

"Think you got enough books there, lad?" Rather than replying you simply nod your head and he starts to add up the total. The double set of first year books gets an odd look, but no comment. Unlike the invisible book. Picking it up and feeling around it's edges he comments, "Well, I'd wondered where these went! Suppose the others are jus' scattered about." His hands move as though he's opening it, and he frowns slightly before bringing his hands together with a sigh. "Da-Ah... Drat. I'd hoped it could be read, but no such luck. Pages and ink are just as invisible as the rest of it. We were gonna charge five galleons for these, but if they can't be read they're just a novelty. Heh, get it? Ah well. Anyway, two galleons for this one, so your total is one hundred and twenty three galleons. A fair haul, that!"

It is a bit pricy, but you can manage that, so you take out your money-bag and begin to count out coins, idly noting as you do that they aren't actually in the bag, but just appear in your hand as you reach into it. Something to look into later.

Much later, because now you have your books and Hagird is outside the shop, holding two ice creams! And it looks like he's offering one to you!

Now you and Hagrid are headed to...

Professor Asshole
While thinking on your options of where to go next you busy yourself with the chocolate and raspberry ice cream Hagrid got you. And subtly switching out your title from Freak to First Year Student.

After careful deliberation you tell Hagrid, "Let's get the potions ingredients next." Something that draws a chuckle from the large man.

"Like yer mom, then. Yer dad woulda been all over the broomsticks, but yer mom was more into learnin'. Potions and charms especially."

When you walk into the apothecary you're assaulted by the horrible smell of the place, a mix of bad eggs and cabbages. But even that can't take away from the fascinating variety for sale in the shop. While Hagrid waits for the man behind the counter to finish with another customer, a tall man with a hooked nose and greasy hair, you wander around, observing things in the shop, like glittery-black beetle eyes(five Knuts a scoop.)

When your attention wanders to some silver unicorn horns you are startled by a soft voice, barely more than a whisper, but somehow commanding.

"You won't be needing any of those for your first year."

Turning you see the same man who was at the counter standing there, looming over you. His eyes look over you, lips curling into a sneer. "And what is that you are wearing, Potter?" Without waiting for a reply he looks back toward Hagrid. "Did you not give him a chance to get dressed before dragging him out of his bed?"

"Now Professor Snape..."

So this man is one of your professors. And not a very polite one, it seems, as he ignores whatever Hagrid was about to say, turning to look at you again. "I had hoped you would not be as much of a dunderhead as your father. But like him you're drawn toward the flashy and expensive," This part of his statement is accompanied by his hand waving toward the unicorn horn you were examining, before it swings to point at the beetle eyes. "And overlook the simpler things that are far more useful in day to day brewing."

You feel you should be more affronted by his insulting words about your father, and you, but for some reason you're not as upset as expected. Maybe your [Gamer's Mind] coming into play again.

Regardless, you aren't going to let this stand. You're going to...

[ ] Meet insult with insult. Greasy haired bat...

[ ] Prove him wrong about your being a dunderhead.
-[ ] Write-in how.

[ ] Actually, on second thought, you are going to let this stand.

Professor Asshole, now with slightly less ass!
After a couple of seconds consideration on how to respond you look away from the greasy haired man and reply, a bit more meekly than you'd intended.

"I apologize for the state of my clothing, sir, but my Aunt Petunia never got me anything of my own. She only ever gave me my cousin's old clothes."

This prompts a frown from the dark man, accompanied by him murmuring in his soft voice, "Petunia? But she hates..."

[Alert:] +20 relationship with Severus Snape.

Seeing that you've gotten him thinking you decide to press on. "If you knew my father, did you also know my mother, sir? Hagrid says she liked learning about potions, so I'd very much like to learn more about the subject, though I only just learned of magic not too long ago and I haven't had a chance to read the textbook, so I don't know much about them. From your apparent expertise, I'd wager you are the potions professor. I'm looking forward to learning everything you have to teach."

"Nobody likes a suck-up, Potter." Snape replies with a sneer, almost glaring at your face. But once his eyes meet yours he abruptly looks away, sneer fading.

[Alert:] -5 relationship with Severus Snape.

"But yes. I did know your mother. Truly one of the best of us, and her loss is one we all regret." He turns away and starts to look over the books you'd selected, currently being carried by Hagrid. After a few minutes he starts toward the door, his robes billowing behind him. "I would suggest, if you are truly interested in potions and not just being a suck-up, that you pick up the books Potion Ingredients and Their Reactions by Fimblewight. Maybe I'll have one student this year that won't melt their cauldron."

[Alert:] +20 relationship with Severus Snape. Relationship with Severus Snape now neutral.

This leaves you and Hagrid standing almost alone in the shop, with just the man behind the counter there with you. After a few minutes of everyone standing around silently Hagrid speaks up, turning toward the man behind the counter, "Well! We jus' need a basic first year kit. An' I guess that book the professor mentioned."

Once everything is acquired and paid for, costing you another twenty galleons, you and Hagrid head out of the shop.

"Hagrid, why did that professor seem to dislike me at first? And comparing me to my father... I don't even know my father, so how am I supposed to avoid acting like someone I don't know?"

Looking decidedly uncomfortable, Hagrid takes a couple minutes to respond. "Ah... Well... Back durin' their school-days yer father an' his friends were pranksters. Not even the Weasley twins have been able to compete with 'em yet. An' Professor Snape was one of their favorite targets, on account o' him bein' Slythrin. Now, don' get me wrong. Slytherin are a nasty lot. But not all of 'em are bad."

After a couple more minutes of silence the large man abruptly speaks up again. "Listen, Harry. I got somethin' I gotta go get. Why don' you go an' get your wand, since that will probably take a while. Or I suppose you could go somewhere else."

After some thought you decide to go to...

[ ] Ollivanders(Wands, nobody)

[ ] My father was a prankster, huh? To Gambol and Japes!(Joke supplies, the Weasley twins.)

[ ] 2nd Hand Brooms(Brooms, Ron)

Robes and Longbottom
Hagrid nods as you tell him that you'll be heading to get your robes. "Alrigh'. That'll take yeh a while, so I'll take care o' what I need ta, and pick up the various little things yeh'll need. Quills, parchment, ink. Might grab your trunk, cauldron, an' telescope while I'm at it." That said the two of you head off down the alley.

Along the way you spend time using [Observe] on everything you can see. You don't find anything interesting out by doing so, but in the end you do gain five levels in your observe skill. When you reach Madam Malkin's Hagrid nods and says, "Alrigh'. I'll come back 'round here when I'm done."

Then the large man is headed off, and you walk into the shop. Almost as soon as you've entered a squat, smiling witch dressed in mauve asks, "Hogwarts, dear?" But before you can answer she continues, "Got the lot here- another young man being fitted up just now, in fact."

In the back of the shop a short, blonde and somewhat chubby boy, though not fat as you've seen fat with Dudley, is standing on a footstool while a second witch pins up his long black robes. Madam Malkin guides you over to the stool next to him, slippes a robe over your head, and begins to pin it to the proper length.

The other boy looks over at you before shyly looking away. An understandable reaction, you think, but with how long this is looking like it's going to take you need to do something to keep from getting bored.

"Hello? Hogwarts too?" you ask him.

"Y-Yes. My family wasn't really sure I'd be going at all. But then I got my letter and we've been running about getting everything."

Nodding your head as you listen, until a reprimand from Madam Malkin about causing the robe to move about makes you stop, you reply, "Well, I didn't know about any of this until yesterday. Apparently my parents were a witch and wizard, but my aunt and uncle never told me."

"Why wouldn't they tell you about that? If they're muggles did they just not know?" The blonde boy, who your ability is telling you is named Neville, asks. Then something seems to occur to him that makes him pale slightly. "Oh! Gran would have my head for not introducing myself! I'm Neville Longbottom. Might I have your name?"

[ ] Introduce yourself

[ ] Give a fake name

And either way.

[ ] Write-in for continued interaction.

And roll 2d20+10 for me. I'll be taking the highest of the first five rolls. I won't be asking for dice rolls often, but in this case I just need to see how Harry's luck would play out.

Wands
"My name's Harry," You reply, leaving off your surname. After all, he's wizard raised it seems, and would certainly know it. "Hey, how much shopping do you have left to do? I'm here with Hagrid and he went to get various things, so I'm not sure how much we'll have left, but in the least I have to get my wand."

Neville hesitates a moment before speaking up, "Um... I don't really remember what was on the list. But I've already gotten books, potion supplies, a telescope. We've got quills and parchments at the house."

"That means you still have to get your wand, right? We can go and get our wands together!" After you exclaim this Neville seems about to reply, but a stern voice interrupts him.

"I do not think that will be necessary. Neville will have his father's wand." Looking toward the source of the voice you see a tall, thin and bony witch wearing, of all things, a hat with a stuffed vulture on it. At least you think it's stuffed. You hope it's stuffed.

(Luck roll: 46. Roll needed to not lose relationship with the Longbottoms for your suggestions: 20. Roll needed for Hagrid interrupt so that Neville knows his father wand is what causes problems later in the year: 30)

Before the conversation can go much further a large shadow appears, darkening the room. Mostly because Hagrid just stepped through the door and is blocking off the light. "Now, Madam Longbottom. You know Ollivander says tha' the wand chooses the wizard."

(Minimum roll needed to successfully get Neville a new wand, 40.)

Seeing Madam Longbottom is about to reply in the negative, though Neville is looking thoughtful, you speak up. Maybe your fame can be of some use here. "Excuse me, Madam Longbottom. My name is Harry Potter." It seems the company her grandson was keeping has caught her attention as she turns her gaze back to you. "I know we'll see each other at school, but I grew up not knowing about all this magic stuff, and have no friends... Ah... In the wizarding world. So I'm wanting to make friends, and Neville seems like a good one. So I'd like to spend at least part of the time shopping with some friends."

(Roll needed to get Augusta Longbottom investigating why you didn't know anything about magic: 45)

"Why would you not..." The witch starts to ask something, but ends up trailing off, a thoughtful look on her features. Her eyes narrow as she looks you over, taking in your small frame. Shaking her head slighlty she turns her gaze back to Neville, who seems to almost wilt under her stare. "Neville. Accompany young Harry and Hagrid to Ollivanders. I've to get in touch with a few people."

Hagrid beams brightly at that and nods his head. "Alrigh' lads! Let's finish up here, an' we'll head to Ollivanders!" After saying that he sets a large trunk he'd been carrying down. "Got this fer yeh, Harry! It's got all yer books and other supplies in it. An' since yeh got so many books I made sure ta get one that only weighs as much as a feather."

Eyes a bit wide at this revelation you say, "That's amazing! Thank you! How much do I owe you?"

Hagrid pauses at this, one of his hands moving to stroke his beard. "Well, I weren't gonna have yeh repay me for it, but it also ain't what I was gonna get yeh for a birthday gift. So let's say twenty galleons, an' I'll get yer birthday gift while yer gettin' yer wand. That can take a bit, it can."

Your mind is reeling at the thought of you getting a birthday gift, but you manage to remain calm enough to fish out the galleons and pass them over to Hagrid. Once the fitting is done you hop down and, after waiting another ten minutes for alterations to be done magically to a stock set of student robes, pay the ten galleons for your robes and stow them in your trunk. Then it's off to Ollivander's.

The outside of the shop is narrow and shabby, with peeling gold letters over the door proclaiming it's name. The window is covered in dust, but you can still see the single wand where it lay on a faded purple cushion in the window. When you enter a bell rings from somewhere deep within the shop. It seems like a tiny place, with a single spindly chair and thousands of narrow boxes stacked right up to the ceiling. The very air seems to tingle with some secret magic, but that isn't the most interesting thing about the shop. No, what is most interesting is what happens when you look at the boxes.

[Wand: Ash and Dragon Heartstring. x1.2 dark arts, x.8 healing]
[Wand: Mahogany and Unicorn Tail Hair. x1.8 transfiguration, x.6 dark arts]

And more, until the names and bonuses all start to overlap, covering one another to make it near impossible to make them out. On a whim you look back at the wand in the window.

[Replica of the first wand made by the first Ollivander. -]

Huh. So it's just a fake. Your attention being on that wand, however, means you're a little startled when a soft voice speaks up from behind you. "Good afternoon."

You aren't the only one startled either, as Neville lets out a soft squeak, and there's a loud crunching noise from where Hagrid is currently standing.

"Ah, Mister Ollivander. I'm gonna leave these two in yer care while I go get somethin'."

"Rubeus! Rubeus Hagird! Oak, sixteen inches, rather bendy? I suppose they snapped it when you got expelled."

Hagrid shuffles his feet and comments, "Er... Yes they did. I've still got the pieces, though." And then he's slipping out the door, surprisingly quick and nimble for his size.

Mr. Ollivander turns his eyes back to you, moving closer. "Harry Potter. You have your mother's eyes. It seems only yesterday she was in here herself, buying her first wand. Ten and a quarter inches long, swishy, made of willow. Nice wand for charm work. Your father, on the other hand, favored a mahogany wand. Eleven inches. Pliable. A little more power and excellent for transfiguration. Well. I say your father favored it-It's really the wand that chooses the wizard, of course."

By this time Mr. Ollivander is so close that you and he are almost nose to nose. One long, white finger reaches out to touch the scar on your forehead. "And that's where... I'm sorry to say I sold the wand that did it. Thirteen and a half inches. Yew. Powerful wand, very powerful, and in the wrong hands... Well, if I'd known what that wand was going out into the world to do..." Shaking his head Mr. Ollivander backs away, pale eyes locking onto Neville.

"And Neville Longbottom. I was wondering if your grandmother was going to bring you in here as she did your father before you. Oak and dragon heartstring. A fine wand for more overt magics, but rubbish at the subtler arts. Your mother was nearly the opposite. Willow and phoenix feather. Ah well... Let's start with you Mr. Longbottom! Which wand is your wand arm? Go on, hold it out!"

After a couple seconds Neville hesitantly holds up his right arm, an act which is shortly followed by a tape measure starting to measure... Everytinhg. Length of his arm, height, inseam, distance between nostrils... Eventually Mr. Ollivander calls out, "That'll do," prompting the tape measure to crumple to the floor. "Every Ollivander wand has a core of a powerful magical substance. We use unicorn hairs, phoenix tail feathers, and the heartstrings of dragons. No two Ollivander wands are the same, just as no two unicorns, dragons, or phoenixes are quite the same. And, of course, you will never get such good results with another wizard's wand."

Mr. Ollivander returns from among the stacks with boxes of wands in his arms. Setting them down he holds the first one out to Neville. "Try this one, Mr. Longbottom. Birch and phoenix feather. Ten and a quarter inches. Sturdy and stiff. Give it a wave." Taking the wand Neville swishes it through the air, and Ollivander snatches it from his hand. "No, no. How about this. Ebony and dragon heartstring." Again Neville starts to wave it before it's snatched away. Something that prompts a roll of his eyes while you give him a sympathetic look.

Wand after wand the two try until finally he is handed a thirteen inch wand of cherry with a unicorn hair. Upon waving that one a shower of sparks shoots from the tip. "Very good! Yes, very good indeed!"

Pale eyes turning back to you Mr. Ollivander speaks up again. "Now, Mr. Potter. Your turn. But there's something different about you. I can tell. So why do you tell me which wand you want to try?"
