The King is Dead, An Heir Is Born: Crusader Kings 3

It's a Paradox game. It'll be at least two years of DLC and patches for the game to be anything other than barebones and dumbed down. HOI4 is only now becoming a complete game with many features still basically missing. Stellaris and EU4 are still getting massive content updates and Rome is barely out of beta.
Paradox games can be barebones on release but using the existence of new content as evidence of that doesn't seem very justified, Paradox develops games for years, that alone is not evidence of universal release inadequacy.

Frankly, if it's taken this long for us to get to the more undercooked parts of the game, then that's still a massive improvement over previous paradox games.

Yeah, the thing to keep in mind about Imperator is that its flaws became apparent very quickly. It's telling that this is the first dev (IIRC) to receive a significant number of downvotes.

Is it unfortunate? Absolutely, but that doesn't mean that it's necessarily a portent of Imperator-esque dooooom. Imperator's flaws lay in design decisions that CK3 won't have to deal with. I'd say it's pretty clear that the devs have ambitions beyond just making a map painter. Hopefully Laws and other things will be added in a free update but I don't think the causes for worry outweigh the great changes.

I was honestly expecting a much greater degree of focus on Characters and plotting at the expense of other mechanics, especially governments; so, I'm not that surprised by the recent dev diary. However, I will admit I wasn't quite expecting governments to be so barebones, but they're at least less so than how governments were at the start of CK2. And honestly some of CK2's ideas about how governments should work are just kind of bad or ended up being a mess for entirely unrelated reasons like how janky the code is for Merchant Republics. So, starting with a bit of a clean slate leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, but also gives me hope that when they do expand things they'll do it better this time.

My opinion on the feudal contracts is that they probably felt people wouldn't want to micromanage fiddly details, given that every vassal has separate feudal contracts. We'll have to wait and see how that pans out I guess.

That and making it a little too involved could, combined with the micromanagement, probably scare away players that are new to paradox games.

At least i suspect that they are thinking along those lines which i can understand. Personally i would like just a few more options but i am satisfied with it as is, though we will see how it works out in practice when it gets released.

Furthermore we have the Clan government form. This government is the rough equivalent of the Iqta government in CK2, though in CK3 it does have a more Feudal bent than it did previously.

The Clan government type is used by most Muslim realms. This government puts more emphasis on the family rather than the realm, with most vassals being members of your dynasty. Obligations are heavily based on opinion rather than being contractual, with happy vassals providing significantly more taxes and levies than unhappy ones. A happy family is a powerful family.

Clan governments also have access to the Clan Invasion casus belli, which can be used once in a lifetime at the highest level of Fame to invade a kingdom, providing a powerful boon for a well-established clan ruler.
Sounds like Muslims are gonna be pretty over powered yet again

I think they're looking at it the wrong way- no one is going to care too much about random number boosts (really, what's 10% extra taxes/levies mean to you?) But say, letting your bro vassal who rebels with you to put you on the throne (cough Ned Stark cough) get a special hereditary perk like being able to create king tier titles, or the right to go raiding (marcher lords ho!), or build/hold cities, or playing a crusader state and letting that one emir stay Muslim (and not convert) because you just cant afford to piss him off- that's the sort of thing you notice and care about.

And well as one post put it- I want the historical accuracy to ruin the HRE by bribing electors with the right to Germany's silver mines.

Would be cool, but I'm not sure the AI will cope with it. :p

99 playable and distinct religions. Sounds like CK3 is going to be way more awesome than the already awesome CK2.

Well...I was having issues with how this game was handling things but it's clear they really, REALLY put some thought and effort into Religion. So my interest is renewed.

This is the most anticipated Game of the year for me. Excited am I.

I love playing CK2, but man I build and spread my dynasty too far and it inevitably slows the game down something fierce, and I'm OCD so I play till the end.
