The Galaxy is Flood, Not Food

Hmm well once the city is taken our two blanks will be something that Tide can, in a sense, copy but I wonder if he will even notice and if he does, try to replicate. Blanks are not just biology, right? It's some weird warp magic as well

only way to not be infected is either high end magical protection,NBC protection of the highest quality or some sort of psiquic/magical protection

my best bet is that this person is a imperial assasin, they seem the only ones with enough control over their biology to filter out spores

Blanks are way more strange warp than they are hightech.

Not even the Emperor could make Blanks, so you know they are advanced Warptek weirdness.

Sulla...

Is she a Callidus Assassin? There was a Vindicare around earlier.

Are these assassins here to off the Inquisitor?

Eldar likes to meddle in the affairs of the Imperium for "reasons" aka screw humanity over while causing more problems and then blame it on humans than themselves.

Like the DAOT A.I. ship girl from Death of Integrity? The one who wiped out an Imperial fleet and casually took down the boarding party by neutralizing their power armors and weapons.

All because her human captain got burned on stake by fanatics.
Yes totally I definitely know what your talking about.

Just to check you are talking about the incident with the DOAT ship that was flung into the future had its crew murdered, went on a rampage right, and then promptly fucked off?

Did it steal the memories of those it slew somehow?

If that was the case… What would happen if it stole the memories and experiences of a Space Marine?

*Cue maniacal laughter*

Concern filled him at all the questions. Concern… and greed. If he could harness this entity, harness its powers and combine them with his sorcery… Nothing would be beyond him. Monstrum itself was a paltry prize compared to that.

Ahsael imagined it, allowing himself that for just a moment. He saw worlds ablaze, an army of warriors with the skills of its greatest warriors and minds, with him to lead them in a conquest of the Materium. This sector, this segmentum, this entire galaxy.

All of it would be his.

There's hubris

And then there's whatever this is

The AI of the DAOT ship was absolutely disgusted with the Imperium and left the galaxy after wiping out their forces coming to try kill her for existing.

Perhaps Tide can meet her and the human crew of the DAOT albeit by proxy (he is terrifying at first impression) to work together.

Can I say I can't wait for what's obviously going to be Tit Snitch minion betrayal because Tide would actually fix the Chaos marine curse and actually make them immune to chaos
I do agree that I'm interested to see how it's going to play out, in part cause it would be the first time we see how much Tide can actually do to unchaos an active chaos worshiper with their wits intact. If Ahsael's reason can triumph over his greed then there is much Tide could do to help him and his fellows.

Beyond Ahsael I'm both intrigued and worried about Sulla. While i doubt she on her own can pose much threat to Tide, Imperial Assassin or not, if she has any way of avoiding them long enough to get some sort of message out, which seems like the kind of thing that might exist in 40k but be reserved for tactical uses; like an assassin needing to be able to send back a message of success or failure so their superiors would know if a threat has been dealt with or not, it could be catastrophic as while Tide certainly seems to be at a point where he could deal with planetary scale threats, even beginning to push beyond that, I very much doubt he is ready to deal with the consequences of a fully aware Imperium.

Average Chaos Worshipper, you mean?
But there's the usual hubris of "I'll bound this entity that could eat me whole to my service and use it against my enemies" contrasting with "I'll bound this entity that could eat me whole and endlessly learns form whatever it eats to my service and use it against my enemies".

This is a plan a 9 year old could see backfiring.

He had been intrigued by the black armored warriors, studying them intently. They seemed almost robotic in their movements, perhaps relying on the elite aura that surrounded them to explain their inhuman capabilities. What had caught his attention the most, however, was the casket.

He had watched that casket, yet been unable to pierce its outer shell because of the wards placed within it. It was legitimately of Mechanicus make then, he suspected, and it gave him reasurrance that the entity had not infiltrated at least that red-robed order. If the entity had possessed the knowledge to ward things, surely it would have done so already to protect itself.
Don't be too hasty, your subject of study could just be an idiot.
Then he'd seen it in action and his disappointment had transformed into a deep concern.

Relatively speaking, the power armored creature was not that physically fast or strong. Relative to a space marine, that is. The inferior patterns of power armor used by mortals and clearly by this creature lacked the black carapace that Space Marine armor possessed that allowed it to connect to the nervous system of the wearer, becoming an extension of them and allowing them to move in it to the fullest extent. This creature had clearly been pulling its armor about rather than moving with it.

However, despite being slower than most space marines would have been, the creature had performed feats few, if any, could have accomplished. At first, Ahsael had assumed it was mere luck and incompetence on the genestealers' part that had kept it from being shot to shreds. However, as it got closer and closer and continued to avoid nearly every shot, he'd realized it wasn't either. Whatever was controlling this creature was carefully watching the trajectory of every ballistic and las round before it was fired and avoiding those paths in time with when they would be fired.
Ahsael is getting geneline flashbacks to Terran Warlords in power armor during the Unification war. Which is weird because I don't think the Thousand Sons did much and were kept in storage.

Just wait until Tide gets access to Space Marine armor. He'll take a look at the Black Carapace and go: "Wait a minute, I can do that." And then we'll be off to the races.

Yes Ahseal, get more curious and obsessed with something that eats planets and can do Logic Plague. Look at it more and try to delve deeper inside. Soon you will also be singing Tide's praises.

Tide: "Wait, when did I convert a Chaos Space Marine? I don't even remember doing that."
As she came to a fork in her path, however, she reached into a hidden pocket and withdrew a small humming device. It was a chain of finely wrought gold, each link no larger than a fingernail, their surfaces covered in the words of prayers. Hanging from it was a silver crystal that glowed with witch-light. It shifted in the empty air, turning and pointing to the right. Without hesitation, she stored the device back where it had come from and continued onwards, following its given directions.
Any ideas on what this thing is? Seems like a psychic gadget of some sort.
Ok, the tons of gold and references to "witch"light probably mean imperial more than Eldar. My guess it uses the Warp and "Fate" to find the directions to an objective, probably a communication beacon. So either the Inquisition is spying on one of its newer members, or a Caladis assassin, or both.
Whatever had happened back there, in the battle, was dangerous. Hundreds of Guardsmen collapsing into unconsciousness while strange cylinders filled with soldiers teleported in via methods unknown to her and filled with mere PDF troopers who fought almost as well as Tempestus Scions. Initially, she'd intended to go along with the Guard as they moved further into the city, only slipping away when it would be more convenient. That incident had proven to her that could endanger her mission.
Good news, I don't think she realizes what Tide is yet. Given her description, she could easily pass it off as something from the DOAT Ship in orbit.

Given how a scrying works in this setting, I am guessing someone detected the DOAT ship coming back into reality and sent someone to keep an eye on it. Not like this would be the first time a DOAT ship coming out of the Warp resulted in Very Bad Things. At least this time the DOAT ship is entirely secondary to the Bad Thing that is happening from the Imperium's perspective.

Maybe all these PDF doppelgängers are some form of Super Murder Servitors deployed from the ship in response to non humans on the planet? Would make more sense than a benevolent flesh tide that doesn't want to be too much of a bother.

I don't know original Flood voice and don't think Tide would sound the same, so i imagine Tide voice is Albrecht Entrati!Warframe. He's also good at poetry.

About Warframe. Warframes are basically what Flood do to people, but with metal added. Question is can Tide replace Heart of Deimos with his Neural Handwavium and create warframe abilities.

Growing no good zone for tyrranids and baby coming in, think i know where this is going.

Good fic. Is nice.

He could probably recreate Deimos without too much issue and at least physically emulate the Warframes, but a lot of their powers would be beyond him and are more in the realm of Psykers and Sorcerers, which he isn't able to use.

Yeah, Warframes need Void Energy for their powers to work. It's anyones guess if the Deep Warp and the Void are even the same thing and if it is, noone even remotely sane is gonna go down there looking for The Indifference to cut off one of his fingers to make the Void-tech necessary to make Warframes.

That ain't no Imperial Tarot, that sounds like Eldar seeing stones.

It seems I was unclear about what I said, Heart of Deimos ( Heart of Deimos (Object) ) in literal sense. HoD supposedly the source of warframe powers.

Info on how the Flood work
Over on the SpaceBattles forum (Yes, @Jackson Fox does post on their, link to the page is this: The Galaxy is Flood, Not Food )
A argument happened over from what I gathered of some brief reading over wether or not tide could create neurons and brains, so @Jackson Fox did a word of God post, since it hasn't been posted here I'm gonna copy and paste it here for everyone who doesn't read this on Space battles

(The following is ALL jackson fox's words, copy and pasted)
Wow, a lot happened while I was asleep.

Alright, to give some answers to how I've interpreted the Flood to operate:

Tide is able to have his Flood cells essentially become whatever he wants, provided he has the genetic data of that thing. If he eats a spider, he can make a spider, but it's still a Flood form. He is able to do something special regarding this particular ability that I won't be getting into in this comment due to reasons.

So, yes, Tide could just create a huge amount of raw biomass and turn it into neurons. However, that wouldn't help him think faster by much if at all, instead it would help that Flood form think faster.

Tide's mind is within/is his Domain. The way I see it, he's just been severely limited by his corrupted nature. Mind Forms (Key Minds, Graveminds, etc.) essentially act as tunnels into his Domain, allowing it to increase in capability. These Mind Forms can grow in raw biomass as much as they like, however it's only by absorbing other creatures that they grow him in capability. Intelligent creatures give the largest boost, hence the preference.

The Neurons inside Flood forms are less of a thinking organ and more of a sensing one. You don't think with your hand and, in this analogy, Flood forms are Tide's hands. It's why he has situations, like with the Puppets, where he relaxes his focus on them just a tiny bit to save some processing power, rather than relying on their brains to function.

Feral Flood without a Mind Form in range have too small of a connection to his Domain to give him any control over them. They revert to the basic instincts of the Flood and they use the neurons inside their heads essentially as a guiding method to spread themselves (hence why they can use tools and such if they're intelligent).

I'll probably have this all included in a later chapter at some point, since I know not everyone reads the comments. Feel free to ask me questions, i know this explanation isn't perfect.

Already Too Late

He was breathing hard, too hard, he shouldn't be breathing. He knew he shouldn't be breathing, but he had to breathe, how did you stop breathing?

The lights of the corridor flickered, revealing nothing. Empty walls, empty ceiling line with empty vents, filtering out empty air. All empty, all lies.

He was running, but to where? He had nowhere to run to.

The lights of the corridor flickered, revealing everything. Tendrils made of flesh, sickly green and rotten, covered the walls like vines. The vents were yellow lungs that coughed and sputtered yellow air that flickered all around.

Shouldn't breathe in that air, but it was everywhere, choking everything.

A creature, like a man yet larger, too thin at the waist and too broad in the chest with a spine that bulged against flesh so tight it looked like it would tear, turned to look at him, but not with eyes. Other men, other women, all passed it by without notice, but he saw it and it knew he saw it.

There were other creatures, other monsters, all different, all unique, yet all the same. They scurried across the ceiling, clinging to the vines like the rungs of ladders, crawled along the walls and buzzed on wings through the air. Yet none saw them, none but him.

The lights flickered and they were all gone. The walls and ceiling were barren, the vents were just vents. The people were just people. Yet one stood out, one who hadn't been there before, who stood in the place of the first monster. It turned and smiled at him, revealing glistening white teeth, then turned and disappeared into the crowd.

"Tide, what the hel was that?" Aliciel asked, confused and a little perturbed.

I'm thinking about writing a horror movie.

"Starring yourself as the monster?"

On the face of it, yes, but the real monster is going to be capitalism.
