The Eldritch One (Celestial Forge)

Chapter 24: A Worried Father
I drum my fingers against the diner booth table. I look up to the T.V. to see that fat bitch Piggot lambasting my daughter on the local news again. Even if it's just her cape identity. I've already had an entire weekend of that, I don't need it here!

"Hey waiter, could you change the channel? I wanna watch the game." I have to yell it out for him to hear me. Perfect location for a clandestine meeting conversation wise.

"Which game?"

"Any game. This news is depressing." He nods, and a short while later it changes to a hockey game. It works. And it doesn't even distract me enough so that I miss Taylor walking in. Her eyes widen as she sees me, and she starts power walking to my location.

"Dad! What the hell are you doing here?! The entire point of us setting up this dead drop is that we are never in the same place at the same time!" She stage whispers at me.

"The entire point of this is so we can communicate even when we're apart, and I can't wait till Wednesday for you to get back to me on this! Taylor what the fuck were you thinking killing those people?!"

"Dad, weren't you the one who told me never to let any kidnappers get you away from the public? That what they would do to you behind closed doors would always be so much worse than what they would try in public? They already sent a kidnapping team after me. A cape team. And I know I told you this in my letter. I was just removing a threat to my life at the source."

"Well that's not what the news is reporting! Don't roll your eyes at me Taylor, this is important. There is a manhunt for you right now. You are a fugitive. And this all could have been avoided relatively easily."

"How."

"You could have unmasked and accused them. Make a media circus out of it."

"It wouldn't have stopped them."

"It could have! And if it didn't, it would be the rich guy unambiguously punching down. The narrative would have changed."

"And my secret identity?"

"Taylor, secret identities exist so capes don't have people hounding them day and night. So they can have a life outside of cape stuff. As much as it hurts to say it you have no life outside of cape stuff. You're on the run, I'm on the run, somebody blew up our fuckin' house last night,"

"Wait what?"

"Emma blew up your social life before all this, and killing that rot powered idiot seems to have done the same in Arcadia. And yes, somebody blew up our fucking house last night. Probably wasn't the Nazis. They would've done that weeks ago."

"Okay, table that bit about our house, cause we're definitely talking about that later, but what about high school? We fought for that transfer to Arcadia."

"Honey, Arcadia is a sunk cost fallacy right now. You can print diamonds out of basically anything, you don't need school. And if you do need school, you can go take night classes in New York or something. You have options."

"Fine I have options, I can go places. That won't stop assholes like-" Her face goes blank and she stops talking. I see a wisp of smoke curl up from where she's scratching at the table.

"Taylor?"

"We're being watched again. By Coil's people. I recognize the stupid radio crackling." She doesn't recognize the stupid radio crackling. That's one of our code phrases. It means he split the timeline and is currently fucking around in his other timeline. When I'm here.

"He wouldn't dare start something so publicly." A filthy lie and we both know it. What to talk about now that we're being watched? "So about our house blowing up. I just found out around noon, and the cops told me it was an explosive device instead of incendiary. Nothing else yet."

"Well it sounds like somebody from out of town then. All the local players would know how empty that place is. Do you think I'll have to finish what I started with the McCormicks? Or is that not smart enough?"

"Ahhh, well if you need to crack some heads, then you need to crack some heads. But for the love of God keep an eye out for any opportunities to get the truth out. I know you plan on being a hero after all this, but they won't accept you after too many shenanigans."

"But Sophia-"

"Killed some two bit gangsters and never made the news. It's unfair, but that matters. Speaking of all this, how much did those team members of yours contribute to the decision to kill them?"

"Well everybody but the shadow guy. He tried to stop it, but we outvoted him. Tattletale was very supportive of me."

"She's the thinker?"

"Yes." I give her a deadpan stare.

"Thinkers aren't infallible honey. You need to understand that smarts don't necessarily make you smart. Did she even bring up the possibility of waging an information warfare against them?"

"...That's not fair." I shrug in response.

"You should listen to that shadow guy. He seems like he has a good head on his shoulders."

"Are you ready to order?" From the waiter. He just walked up to us.

"Yes, I'll have the mushroom swiss burger." And Taylor gets her own sandwich. After we ordered we set up a system to set up a new line of communication. Maybe an actual dead drop this time who knows? Anyways we aren't actually discussing it here. I'm going to shake any tails I may have, and she'll follow me to my current place. We'll set it up there. Once we're both there she speaks up again.

"Tattletale can't split her power between taking down Coil and the McCormicks. Her usage of it is limited."

"Well if all the other McCormicks are after you right now, she's gonna have to do it anyways, right?" She turns her head and starts mumbling.

"Taylor, I don't like bursting your bubble like this, but if I don't do it reality will. And let me tell you reality is an asshole. It'll take all your dreams, aspirations, and hapiness, and grind them into so much dust. As much as it shames me to admit it, the only reason I'm not a drunken mess right now is good old fashioned spite. As much as I'd like to get things back to normal right now, I'd much rather see you succeed and thrive. So don't let anybody screw you over or kill you, okay?"

"Okay Dad. See you later." She gives me a(n almost) spine cracking hug, and leaps out of the window.

She stuck the landing. That's my girl.

Good for Danny, now that's a good version of him :)
Also, yeah, Taylor should bring up some of those alternatives/concerns to Lisa and Brian. Because it's clear Lisa wasn't thinking clearly.

Lisa doesn't have the years of experience an older person does. Danny's been around long enough to know there are many threads you can pull to get things done that DON'T leave you on the hook directly for snuffing out assholes. Showing documentation that Faultline had accepted $X and the McCormicks had transferred/withdrawn a similar amount, on the same day, or even within a couple days, would have put McCormicks in a bad spot. They *might* have considered leaving Taylor alone after that. A bit late now though. Taylor's now on the hook for murder, and she did actually do it, but being in her right mind not to be expected. After having been almost killed at the party by Rot boy, drugged and abducted by Faultline, and attacked during her escape, could you blame her for running on terrified/pissed/vengeful? No? Me either.

And I finally think I have a "reasonable" explanation my mind can work with for why the Forge isn't notifying Taylor of new perks. The Forgemaster hooked her up, without telling her, she'd probably remember. Notifications are turned off, by the Forgemaster, as an experiment to see how the unaware Forger deals with it. Taylor is clueless as to WTF is going on about all these things that keep turning up, and just has to deal with her life being weird with some kind of funky trump power.

Looking at all the perks Taylor has gotten she has massive massive speed buff perks for doing anything she wants to.

And Taylor has the ability to get access to said antimatter no matter where she is since it's in her own personal dimension. Putting her in the Birdcage does nothing to stop her.
The threat would be that much more effective once Taylor obtains the power to go to another Earth. Then it wouldn't be MAD. It's a much bigger deal when you can nope out and drop an Exterminatus behind you as you leave.

To summarize Danny disapproves of Taylor's unwillingness to test alternatives to violence before resorting to it, Taylor's new friend-group, and her unwillingness to engage in what I can only describe as sociological warfare, that or just straight up propaganda, and is disabusing her of the notion that she is going to be able to have a civilian lifestyle and career. Did I miss anything? I feel like I missed a few things.

No no I think that she was; The Elites were founded because of their own demonization; demonizing them would be like shooting Batman in the Batman logo.

No no I'm pretty sure that there's precedent for using lethally self-defense if you have reason to believe that a person you're defending yourself from will not be prevented from continuing to attack you if they are allowed to live.

If I remember right, she lives bolth timelines and sometimes can tell which one he will keep, but it's not certain that he really will keep that timeline.
It could theoretically be defined as a Thinker/Thinker>Master ability to simulate a reality that would be unpreferred to reality by a specific target (that target being himself).

The alternative would have to be actual time-manipulation of at least information and while that wouldn't be beyond the demonstrated capabilities of Shards it is beyond the degree to which any time-manipulation Shard has demonstrated it.
So basically, it's aggressive proactive/pre-emptive self defense?
I wouldn't call it preemptive; there is quite a lot of precedence for their hostility and capability to evade the law.

I wonder whether Taylor will rebuild her house, out of spite if for no other reason, at some point.

Edit: you know I think that the funniest fucken thing about Taylor's Perks so far is that Librarian means that she should be able to just straight-up perfectly reconstruct her house from memory given access to the correct materials.
I am not confused, they're just not communicating effectively because they're being spied on and don't want to tip their hand.

Also I swear I made multiple threadmarks about Coil's power. Those should help clarify things here.
You seem to have decided that it works however is convenient to you at any given moment; that's close enough to being confused for me.

If she can make diamonds from carbon then she can turn it all around and offer a much bigger bounty to any villains looking for a payday. She just needs to express her displeasure to them. Doubt the McCormic's would want to play at blood feud at those rates, especially for some dead cousin.

I'm confused at your confusion. You need to be more clear on what your talking about. As far as I can see, Coil's power seems to running rather consistently. It's when his power interacts with Taylor's that things get funky. Don't remember which it was, but some perk Taylor got allows her to be aware of both timelines, and further allows her to be aware at the moment Coil decides which timeline will be real and which one that is. Issue comes from Coil getting directly involved with Taylor. Think of it like an enclosure, as long as his power is outside of the enclosure, and not directly acting upon Taylor it works fine, he can listen, observe, watch, as long as he does not directly interact, but the moment he uses his power deliberately to approach into the enclosure and poke and prod the nascent eldritch dragon that is Taylor is when her power shuts his power down, full stop.

How is that at all confusing or 'deciding it works however is convenient at any given moment'?

I mean...that is how it's been working hasn't it?

...What were the elements of that metaphor meant to be representative of?

this is the problem I'll quote myself

you ust changed how Taylor and coils powers interact. You've already shown that Taylor knows instantly which timeline is fake and real. She obviously walked away in the real to avoid talking to her for the "first time" a third time yet you made their second talk real and nerfed the time perk. All because you didn't know how to get them in contat with each other "for real" organically...

come on dude
and then she gets blank on a level that means that his powers literally doesn't work on her period. You forget your own story as the author. It has been 15 chapter since that comment and any time split has been mentioned and suddenly you have them back for no reason or consistent logic in universe or irl

It's meant to represent the degrees of separation of Taylor and Coils powers interacting. I distinctly remember, but will need to find it, a chapter that had coils perspective about his testing after Taylor rolled blank. A series of tests where he discovered just how badly their powers interacted and the limits he can go. That his power isn't useless and can still use it as long as he isn't directly acting or coordinating direct action upon Taylor, anyone and anywhere else, yes but not on her.

As I understand it she'd have to accept lower prices for her diamonds if she went legitimate since most diamonds are kind of a brand-name thing, a Veblen thing of being mined from the ground sort of like how Champagne is only not Sparkling Wine if it's from the Champagne wine region of France, rather then a material thing and even then she'd struggle to actually sell them since she's a Parahuman.

For that matter I think that she probably couldn't even legally sell her labor since she's also a Brute and a Thinker.

Depending on how Coil's Shard predicts things she should either be totally capable of changing her simulated selves, though probably only once per simulation, or in "contact" with her parallel self but, unless Coil's Shard is propagating a selective version of Gasconade's Shard's effect through his entire Light Cone and probably any FTL mechanisms within it, a ridiculous proposition, I don't think that he should be capable of putting the universe into a Superposition.

In light of the fact that he is able to both predict Endbringers, which implies that the effect is local to Earth Bet rather then to his Shard using it to get information and then providing it to him, and "choose" which "timeline" he wants to exist in, implying that there is prediction going on somewhere in the process, I think that his Shard is able to put his brain into a binary Superposition, or otherwise provide him with the potential state that his brain would be under certain conditions, which his Shard has predicted would cause him to "chose" to collapse into the one matching his current state.

I actually think that his Shard might be wired up with a effect like Diamondtooth's or Chevalier's or Labyrinth's, the ability to overlap the properties of one thing over another, but using the properties of potential versions of things and targeted at his own brain.

It's definitely a contrived theory that spits in the face of Occam but I can't think of one that would explain all of the facts more simply.

Legal is a relative thing at the best of times. People want things and you can't outlaw them getting those things without creating an uncontrollable black market. If Taylor really wanted to get the money then all she would have to do is tell the diamond cartel all about her little McCormic problem and offer them first refusal on her diamonds. They would be happy to get new product, given that international trade is a shambles and to keep control of the market. Remember, they're just pebbles to Taylor but she could probably stop in and sell them to almost any retail jeweler. If she couldn't Tatteltale certainly could.

Even if she could grow diamond indistinguishable from natural ones, and apparently that's just a matter of including trace amounts of nitrogen in their structure, I'm not sure that it'd be worth it to counterfeit them; just sell them in bulk or something.

The biggest problem is that it's basically illegal for her to have a income.

There are many different kinds of power. When you have power, people tend to let the small stuff slide. Who knows, maybe Danny found a diamond mine in his yard. Maybe he spread the shine around to people that billionaires can't even see. Its a corrupt old world and someone with billions has just as many enemies as allies and while they may pay off the politician for services rendered in those full faith and trust backed government happybucks, their opponents are getting paid in treasure.
