The Best Damn Fics You've Ever Read.

I have the vague suspicion this thread is where I originally discovered this next rec, but I can't actually find it here, so I'm putting it out there.

"The World As It Appears To Be" By Benedict_SC
Magic is real. Angela Ziegler has a messiah complex. Angela Ziegler is one of the most powerful people in the entire world. Her friend the talking moon gorilla is very worried about her. Let's, uh... let's see where that goes!

Is an Overwatch... rational!fic is probably the best term for it. It's complete, well written on a technical level, tells an interesting story, and even manages some great humor in places.
Thirding this rec. I really love how this fic ties everything together.

Wolf Spider (Worm) (Complete)

I'd like to submit Wolf Spider, a truly excellent worm fic. It has Taylor/Rachel, fluff, drama, action, and Imp. It's really really good. Go read it.

I'll second Wolf Spider.

It's a romance / adventure worm fic with Taylor going out a few nights later and meeting Rachel while they bust a dog fighting ring. It's cute while retaining the tone of the original. It starts romance heavy but around the mid way point becomes more adventure focused (the romantic plots are still there just less of the main focus).

This summary doesn't do it justice at all, you should go read it.

Thirded.

Very nice fic. Wonderful mix of ship and adventure.

Wholeheartedly fourthed.

So once it's got three recs, how does a fic actually get put on the list? Do we tag the OP and ask them to put it in?

Generally the attitude is to wait a little while to give time for more eyes to be put on the work. Don't want to have a fic recc'd, thirded before the day is up, put it up there, and then over the course of a week get a bunch of derecs and then have to take it down.

For example, I'm still working on Davion & Davion myself, and I'm leaning far more toward derec than rec, though I'll probably settle with neither as I'm not sure I can justify my criticisms as anything other than personal stylistic preference. It's also possible that the people who insta-rec'd it are people who have followed it along while it was being written and forgot what the beginning is like (though also possible they didn't and think that the end is worth it, or otherwise wouldn't agree with my criticism). I'll post more about that when I finish.

So once it's got three recs, how does a fic actually get put on the list? Do we tag the OP and ask them to put it in?

Things are tallied every couple of months, and the list is updated.

I would say that going back and reading the entire thread is likely to be pretty informative, and not just on procedural things (although there is a bit of that, and debate thereon). There are a fair few recs that got totally ignored or shot down that might be worth reading, or at least checking out. More that were excellent, but incomplete are also recced (and consequently ignored) in there.

At the very least, the informational posts are worth a read.

I would like to recommend Lady of Blood by Racke

The author's summary is: There are no such things as happy endings. But there are ends to nightmares.

This is a horror story set in a Familiar of Zero/Bloodborne crossover. The story follows Louise in the aftermath of the summoning a Hunter and looks at the effect that the Old Blood could have on Tristain.

The story is 12k words and only one chapter so I am struggling to write a good summary without spoiling anything.

Rec.

It's crazy good, but saying anything more would be going into spoliers.

In general, Racke is really good at one-shots, definitely a rec from me.

A New World by IcedFairy

So, this series is for people who are semi-familiar with Touhou. You can still enjoy it even if you aren't familiar with Touhou, but the premise is very continuity-heavy - if you aren't semi-familiar with Touhou, a lot of the first part wouldn't be as enjoyable. This is because the story is set around ~300 years past (at the time) current Touhou years so a lot of the delight in the first part is seeing how things have changed from the time of canon and what happened to the characters. Also, it used developments from the author's other stories, the Magicians series, and some people aren't into that specific pairings.

With that said, it's still one of my favorite fanfics and my favorite Touhou fanfic and fan-made story, period. First of all, it uses the Maribel and Renko duo which are underused characters and it also dives headfirst into the "Maribel and Yukari" plot/theory, which are something a lot of fan, me included, love to talk about. The gist of it is that Yukari was the creator of Gensokyo, with the power to manipulate the boundary of everything, and Maribel from the "spin-off", you can say, have the same power (or at least developing into the same power). Maribel would often go to Gensokyo when she's sleeping and dreaming, so there is probably some connection between the two, though it's never confirmed.

The story starts from where the Maribel and Renko story originally ended (it has since been continued), when Maribel tries to go to the Lunarian's true moon by altering the boundary between the moon and the full moon's reflection - which is the method Yukari uses when she opens a portal to the moon.

They're found by the Watatsuki sisters and, since they didn't reach the true moon by accident and know they've reached the true moon, they wouldn't forget about it even when sent back to Earth. So they're sent to Gensokyo instead. Except this is 300 years since the death of Yukari Yakumo, who was the one maintaining the Great Hakurei Border that allows Youkai to exists with the meager belief in their existence left in the world. With her death, the border becomes completely solid so no one can get in and out, and no one was there to spirit away humans and corpses from the Outside for the Youkai's foods. With Reimu's death, there isn't a strong Hakurei who can nonchalantly beat Youkai, get along with them, and maintain the rules with ruthless efficiency. So Gensokyo is no longer the carefree place it once was, and the balance it currently hangs on is untenable.

But as the second part's summary said, Gensokyo isn't the only one having problem. Outside world Humans have commercialized moon tour and colonization, and with them they bring the filth/impurity/kegare inherent to all things that are part of the cycle of life and death. The Lunarian are only immortal and so strong because they are Pure being, and with even the true moon being affected by impurity, things aren't looking so well for them. On top of that, there are more than a few people with beef with the old Yakumo, and hearing that her reincarnation is alive and well in Gensokyo, well. They might as well enact their revenge.

This culminates in the third part which is the best part; an all-out magical war. The "magical war in a world that has muggles/masquerade" plotline is one of my favorite plotlines of all, especially when it's more Eastern/Japanese urban fantasy than Western. Shakugan no Shana series still hold a dear place in my heart because of its epic magical war in the last season. This one is no different, with the Lunarian side desperate for revenge and the Gensokyo side being divided. On top of that, a clash between a race of uber-strong magical humans with technology more advanced than 24th century humans (by a millennium) and thousands of equally strong mythical beings isn't going to go without its collateral damages.

The result is an extremely pitched battle where characters can and do die (not many, but still). All while everyone still dances to Yukari's tune, even three centuries after her death. The moment in the end when it's revealed what her true plan is... mh, still my favorite moment in Touhou fanfiction. If you're familiar with Shakugan no Shana, then it's like Yuuji pulling "This was all a decoy" in S3E23.

While the first two parts are enjoyable, especially for Touhou fans since there are a lot of fanservice/continuity with canon (at the time) in it, it's that third part that makes it all so great. And I highly recommend it as the best damn Touhou fic I've ever read due to, if for nothing else, that part alone. Of course, the Touhou fandom having so many people with highly variable preferences in it might make some people not into it because it pushed their pet peeves button or two - but IcedFairy's work is generally well-received by most people on SB, so the writer is good even if they have their own interest in what they write.

Anyway, that's my rec. If you like it, try IcedFairy's other works, as they're very good as well (in particular, check out Makai Shopping Trip -> Witches' Ball -> Walpurgisnacht -> Witches' Duel -> Marisa's Summer Camp of the Magician series, which is a damn fine series of Touhou fanfic focusing on Marisa, Alice, Patchouli, and Koakuma)

edit: I forgot, Transformation is the one where the Magician trio finally got together. Well, since I'm including the more romance parts of the Magician series anyway: Transformations-> Magician's Wedding (part of Magician series proper) | Three Christmas Gifts -> Chain Reaction -> Hopeless Prank (not part of Magician series proper, cracky) | Hiroshima Investigation Trip (dunno how it plays into the series since I haven't finished reading it)

Transformations is I literally got no idea where and when to place it and if it's the seemingly yearly not tied to anything at all (I'd IMO place it with Three Gifts and Chain reaction.

Hiroshima Investigation Trip's a stand alone story with more about Alice, Momiji and Sanae and is a pretty solid story

But with A New World. This is one of those By one category I can very much second the recommendation (The tales from a new world one shot can be summed up as one good story, one utterly forgettable story and the worst story put up by the author) as it's a very high quality Touhou work.

But the problem is that it often needs other stories to better make it fit together which can be viewed as a derecommendation as well, due to IMO the best damn fics you've ever read having a low bar of entry to enjoy it.

And I'm not talking the Mari-Ali-Patch-Koa grouping. It's things like Utsuho's godhood and Orin being her shrine maiden would seem really "Wait, what?" about it. Which ties to the shorts Godhood and Cats and Crows to better understand it. which would have me take points away as it REALLY requires you to have solid Touhou knowledge to get what's going on especially with the Lunarians and the Moon.

It's also a story that's kinda had some headaches from Touhou always adding more games and factions. You have to remember when it was written in terms of events later on. When Book 1 was put up the newest game was Fairy Wars (TH12.8) and it was a good year before Ten Desires (TH13) would be announced. Book 3 was already well underway before Ten Desires came out and the Taoists that arrived with it. It's an issue that these "THE ENTIRE OF GENSOKYO IS INVOLVED" plots show as being very dated very fast. A reader now not knowing when it was published would most definitely question why Junko's not in her happy place with open season on the Moonies.

TL;DR: If you're a Touhou fan it'd be a recommendation. If you're not... I'm really not sure if I could recommend it for you.

A more creative eva fic that a good counter to other eva fic that has the same tiresome set up over and over again. It has a lead character (kensuke) who always get trash in eva fic by other writers who is for once written in a more positive and charming way.

This take place after EOE but unlike other fics that take place after EOE whit violent soy boy and his violent roommate hooking up due the writers ignoring their toxic relationship, this is about how everyone is dealing whit living in a dark unstable world cause by third impact. Shinji has to deal whit the fall out of his actions in EOE and in the story. The lead character is mana.

Pokemon fanfic wise, A Professor and a Student is the only complete fic I can unambiguously rec.

The basis of it is a canon compliant look at Ash and Professor Kukui in Alola(the title is a bit on the nose). It kind of breaks that conceit later on, but how would be spoilers. The real meat of it though is in the relationships, with the trust developing between characters as the fic goes on being unbearably sweet to read.

Word smithery wise, it is servicable. The flow of reading was never broken by a glaring error, and the imagery was clear, at least for fanfic standards. Fanfiction as a whole has an expectation that you know what the characters look like, so I honestly cannot recall how descriptive they were in regards to that.

I might be a bit biased due to it being of the fanfic genre where you get a look at canon through a secondary character, which is my favorite kind bar none. It also avoids the pitfalls of the Pokemon anime due to having a definite ending, if one with setup for a sequel.

Seriously though, read it. It's good.

While you may have failed with the spelling in your rec, it would appear that the stories themselves are in possession of solid grammar.*

Covenant Red, is alright, from a chapter in, but deviates wildly from NGE standard set up. And has a non standard main character. Either situation on its own would be interesting, but in concert they give me concerns. I will at least keep reading this one.

I Knew Him When is incomplete (the author makes mention of a separate chapter of epilogue), or at the least it is marked as such, and was last updated in 2007, so this one is something that should get more careful consideration.

*if you fix the spelling I will edit that first sentence out

Hm, yeah. Recced.
LeDiz is pretty good at making the characters feel like people, giving you a nice look at different relationships and how/why they act the way they do.
In fact, the fic was so nice that I immediately went on to read the other twelve fics in that series (unconnected from each other).

A demon lord's hero

Not sure why it isn't no here already. It's an AU take on Shirou in DxD verse. Shirou got through to DxD verse trying to save Illya who is about to expire after F/SN, and got turned into a devil to buy the help of a certain Serafall.

Note: it's a VERY AU take, the characters are there, the base personalities are still the same, but those angels, fallen and devils are portrayed with an alien mindset instead of the canon "human with powers" take. Shirou is also AU, the base personality is mostly there, slight change in history, and the devil's sin he got when he turned into a devil(ironically) made him more human, as he at least got a sin instead of the distorted martyr mindset he had in canon.

Inb4 boobs: no focus on boobs. Rest assured this isn't a teenager harem fic, the narrator is pretty mature for this fandom.
Not even getting into whether it's good, it's not finished and therefore not qualified.

De-rec. I've gotten halfway through it and it's just boring. Literally nothing happens for eighty thousand words. Character studies are interesting, cool even, over 10k words. When you've read through 80k and absolutely nothing has happened it loses the right to call itself one of the best damned fics of all time.

I'll reluctantly second that derec. I liked the idea, a lot, but a lot of the execution was just kind of weird and slow. Especially the bits that hinged on past canon while ignoring past canon.

Like, for example, it's a major thread throughout the fic that what happened at the Kalos final is this big mystery and Ash is maybe kind of traumatized and woobie-like.

Only it was being broadcasted live to all of Kalos at the very least, and we know this because we see Team Rocket doing it and we see various Kalos side characters watching the coverage live. Apparently Pokemon is a dystopia where the Pokemon League can casually silence an entire nation and wipe events from history. Either that or the writer just wanted sad secret woobie.

Finished Davion & Davion (Deceased). I mentioned previously that I was aiming more toward de-rec than rec, but after finishing it the opposite is true. I'm going to abstain from going one way or the other because there do seem to be some big issues, and the earlier third or half could use some work.

The biggest issue that popped up for me is that the writing is just so... barebones. It's anemic. At certain points I was actually on the lookout for sentences that contributed to building a scene that didn't directly inform the proceeding bits of dialogue or character interaction, and those were few and far between. In general, the beginning of the fic read like "infodump, dialogue, avoid saying the word 'said', infodump, dialogue, rinse-repeat".

This is a particular issue for me, because the most familiarity I have with the setting is the wonderful Heir of the Bruce quest on SB, but that doesn't really equip me for a firm grasp of the wartime setting. This fic reads almost more like a piece of RL fiction, where a lot of detail gets cut out because the intended audience is assumed to know what everything looks/sounds/feels like. It might work for some people, especially if they're familiar with the setting, but I expected a whole lot more from a science fiction tale.

The end result is a writing style that feels very efficient but lacks anything to provide getting immersed. I was actually so put off by it, and found it so strikingly noticeable, that I suspected the author of having aphantasia, as people who do typically rely far more heavily on dialogue and hard information in their writing rather than descriptors as they lack the ability to mentally visualize scenes. The stories I prefer allow me to get immersed in the world that's written about, allow me to visualize the scenes being described, but I wasn't able to do any of that with this story.

And yet, I still found myself greatly enjoying the latter half of this fic. I believe it was some combination of improved skill (surprising, given the fic was written over the course of 5 or so months unless there were backlogs) and me just accepting it as if it were a piece of WW2 alt-history or something where I wouldn't give it the same scrutiny as I would for general fiction.

Aside from some unfortunately constant misspellings/word usage errors, and what I consider personal misgivings about style, the writing is very competent and I'm not surprised others would find this as one of the best fics they've ever read.

As much as I ended up liking it toward the end, I have too many misgivings about the beginning to hand it a rec. If there was a slight style adjustment, and some liberal application of editing, I could definitely see my issues with it resolved, though.
