TRAITS
Cardassian Ship – Durable, uncomfortable, close, cramped and cheap. Thinks creature comforts are for other people and technical sophistication is for people who haven't spent decades starving to death. The fact that the starving could have been avoided if the government were less...you know, monstrous doesn't seem to have occurred to that many of them.

Okampan Crew – the crew are bright, perky, cheerful, and incredibly psychically powerful. Individually, they're all better than Vulcans, and as a gestalt? Who knows!

[X] Beam B'lanna and Seska over. Cardassian tech wiz and Maquis engineering genius can sort this out in five minutes, right?

Surely nothing can go wrong here.

[X] Modulate the tractor beam to shove against nickel, then gently push the asteroid away.
-[X]and evacuate all non essential personnel from the Val Jean

Not sure if we're doing the " they say a few minutes, but they actually have enough time to fill an entire episode" trope, but I'd prefer not to risk it.

Just a moment, it just occurred to me that the asteroid that the Val Jean is out of phase with is physically touching the crew as in the case of Ton and Lom.

Wouldn't pushing it then proceed to squish said crew?

Liked the Steve Shives reference, love his videos.

So, uh, I went to the grocery store, but then THE SPIRITS took hold of me and instead of writing a Star Trek update, I instead wrote an...entire roleplaying game.

Haha, that's 6s against a diff of 2 (base diff for removing a complication), +1 for the worsening complication (the panicking okampans) for 3 momentum. Nice job! And with 2 momentum, you can obliterate the other complication - everyone calms down due to good jorb!

the actual update will come later today because I need to hit my IRL job soooooon.

PARALLAX (1.3)
Janeway sighed. "Okay," she said. "How do we resolve this without getting everyone killed."

"By adjusting the phasic frequency of the cloaking device, we can shunt the asteroid completely out of phase without damaging the crew or ship," Tuvok said. "But doing so would require significant on site engineering capability and a significant knowledge of the inner working of Cardassian power grids."

Janeway nodded.

"Well," D-91 said. "This is one of those bonding experiences you humans are so inordinately fond of, yes?"

"Torres is going to absolutely love this," Janeway said, her lips quirking up slightly.

Gral Seska walked, her back ramrodstiff, next to the half-Klingon and tried to not let her distress show on her face. The past three weeks had been one long waiting for the shoe to drop. She had watched her language, carefully. She had made sure to keep her computer access to limited. She had checked her room for bugs, but...since she hadn't found any, she supposed that the Federation's automation technology was on par with the Obsidian Order's, so for all she knew, her every single biometric pattern was being recorded. For all she knew, they were scanning her brain at all times - and were reconstructing her personality in their holodeck torture simulators, to find the best way to-

"So," the half-Klingon said, causing Seska to jerk to attention. "Here's how this is going to work." She stepped up to the door leading to the transporters bay, then walked up to the first of the transporter pads. "You're going to tell me what I ask, and I will save the day, and that's the extent of how much talking we're doing."

Seska snorted, then stepped onto the pad next to her. "And so, if you're about to make a stupid mistake, I keep my mouth shut."

The half-Klingon, Torres, glared at her. "I won't make a mistake."

"I'm sure that will be a great-" whirrr -"comfort to our next of kin," Seska said as she looked around herself in the interior of the Shel-Kath.

The corridor they stood in looked normal - right up until five meters away from their entry point, where a wall of rock bisected everything. An arm stuck from the rock, wriggling faintly, and a muffled screaming came from inside of the rock.

"Yeesh..." Torres whispered. "This is a bet farshlugginer."

"I know Klingon, you know," Seska snapped. "You can't conceal information from me that way."

Torres smirked at her, then said something in...it...okay, it wasn't Klingon at all.

"...what?" Seska asked.

"Oh, I thought you knew Klingon, dear," Torres said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. She stepped to the arm, grabbed the hand, then shouted into the rock. "Stay calm! Stop screaming." The hand didn't quite phase through her, but there was a buzzing crackle as their phasic fields interacted sluggishly, if at all. The voice stopped, clearly trained to listen to that tone of voice. "We need to get to engineering - where's the nearest jeffry's tube?"

"They're called dyall shunts," Seska muttered under her breath.

The hand slid through Torres' hand with a sparkling haze of interference, then pointed off to the side. Torres shouted into the rock. "Thank you! Stay calm!" She stepped over, yanked open the dyall shunt, and then swung herself in.

Seska crawled in after Torres, glaring at her form fitting pants. "You could have asked me," she said.

"These kids are panicking and scared. They need something else to focus on," Torres said, then shoved open a hatch and swung forward. The two of them emerged into the area with the cloaking device, where two Okampan men were screaming their heads off. Torres lifted her hands. "Hey, guys-"

"We're dead! We're alive, but we're dead!" One of the boys, a pink haired male that looked...actually almost identical to the other, screamed. Seska shook her head.

"Of course you're already dead!" she shouted at them. "We're all already dead - that's what being a spacer means. It means you're dead until you've retired and can set foot on the ground again, and be away from radiation, darkness, disease and death. Until then, there's nothing but service for others, duty, and honor! So stop your caterwauling."

The room was silent. The two Okampa gaped at her.

"Cheerful place you're from," Torres said, slowly.

"Is that some kind of a joke?" Seska snapped as the two of them walked to the cloaking device, mounted in the far side of the wall. Rock blocked half the panel, so Torres had to lay on her back and wedge herself into it, while Seska held up the metal plating. "Don't you Starfleet officers take the same oath?"

"No, of course not," Torres said, grunting. "Shit. Red, Red, Green, White cabling means-"

"They're YI-class EPS conduits," Seksa said, her long drilling and studying coming to use once more. She had never understood why other cadets had wasted time talking to people and...going to parties and...it was all just a waste of time, when you could be studying, to do a good job, so that the Union would prosper.

"Got it...okay...huh," Torres said, then adjusted a switch that caused a spray of sparks to spurt out of the machine. The rock shuddered, shimmered, and seemed to vanish all at once - whipping away like a poorly done special effect. The Okampans sagged and dropped to their knees, gasping, while cheers rang out through the ship.

Seska frowned. "What's huh, exactly?"

Torres slid out on her back, looking up at her.

"You're not going to believe this..."

"Calculate the odds for all four interlocks and safety systems failing in a row," Janeway said, as Torres and Seska sat across the table from her, Tuvok at her side.

"Approximately zero point zero zero zero zero zero zero zero one percent," Tuvok said.

"And this happening in conjunction with the asteroid being in the warp path?" Janeway asked.

"Even more infinitesimal, captain, beyond my ability to reasonably approximate," Tuvok said.

Seska tensed, her shoulders tightening. Her eyes refused to meet Janeway's - as if she was either readying to defend herself, or trying to hide her guilt at the same time. Torres, though, was shaking her head. "Odds like that don't just happen," she said.

"Incorrect. Highly improbable events occur with shocking regularity," Tuvok said. "Our existence, for instance, is equally improbable."

"But that's over billions of years!" Torres said.

Janeway frowned. "What do you think the other explanations could be?"

"The Okampans made a junior mistake," Torres said. "And the Cardassian POS stealth tech-"

"The design was not at fault!" Seska snapped, her head ducking forward. "The design...there were four interlock safety systems, all meant to deal with this exact situation, they failed, but there were four, that was more than a reasonable number of backups for such an unlikely scenario."

Janeway frowned.

I am sure that the latent but massively powerful esper abilities in a crew of young* Ocampans had nothing to do with this highly improbable event.

[X] This warrants at least some investigation but we can't afford to disrupt the new crew's training. Mr. Tuvok, scan the Val Jean from stem to stern - figure out what the hell is going on. Gral Seska, you know that ship better than anyone, I want you to assist Mr. Tuvok in the investigation. If there are any Obsidian Order voles aboard that ship, I trust the two of you to find them discretely.

You gotta give trust to get trust. I think Seska is on the up and up. Showing we trust her, might convince her to start trusting the rest of the crew. Plus, if she is a saboteur, then pairing her up with Tuvok is the best possible way to catch her. Plus, I think the two will bond well.
