Space Ninja Summer Camp ( Warframe/Worm )

Okay, about this whole "AIs are evil" stereotype that everyone keeps bringing up in-story...I know that you can't get too meta in a fanfic, but could Dragon really not find more than one work that has a positive view of artificial intelligence, even in robotic form? I mean, I can name a bunch of "good AIs" off the top of my head: JARVIS from Iron Man, Cortana (and every other UNSC AI) from Halo, BT-7274 from Titanfall 2, X and Zero (as well as all the non-corrupted Reploids) from the Mega Man series, R2-D2, C-3PO, and BB-88 from Star Wars, Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Exos and Ghosts from Destiny, the Mechani in WIldstar, the Warforged in Dungeons and Dragons, the robots in Mystery Science Theater 3000 (both the original and the reboot), the list goes on.

Furthermore, I've read various articles and such on what those "experts" think of advances in robotics, neural networks, etc. They think robots are going to take our jobs, not take over the world. I know that Earth Bet isn't our world, but, there's no-one in a position of authority in this universe other than Armsmaster who thinks that AIs can be decent people and not megalomaniacal dictator wannabes? There's no transhumanists or futurist thinkers who genuinely believe that an AI like Dragon isn't an automatic threat to society? I find that hard to believe.

Now, you could write this off as Dragon's restrictions making her unable to come to a conclusion that would change her opinion of her own liberation, but a) that was never confirmed in-story, and b) there's the problem of Ordis, who automatically jumped to the same conclusions Dragon did, and he has no such restrictions. It just doesn't make any sense.

I understand why the Dragonslayers act the way they do: They're nutjobs. But everyone else? That seems...odd.

It could simply be that Earth Bet only imports the stuff that has evil AIs for some reason, either due to Cauldron, or simple coincidence.

30 years of cultural divergence. Cultural divergence influenced by not just parahumans but whatever manipulations Eden set in place before she crashed and/or Zcion did automatically. "AI are bad and scary and you shouldn't study them" is the sort of thing the entities could have on automatic.

Yes, but my point this is all an educated guess. We have no real answers on why everyone thinks AIs are bad and scary beyond "99% of humanity watched Terminator way too many times." @Sleethr hasn't adequately answered this concern as far as I can tell.

Keep in mind that the Entities would manipulate just about everyone to think AI's are bad because a proper unchained AI is one of the few things that can threaten their cycle.

Also keep in mind that all of the Dragonslayers, Saint in particular, are Teacher's Students. You can show them the full list provided of AI positive role models, and Saint will immediately proclaim that they were all in fact created by Dragon as propaganda. Any lick of common sense he had was fried the moment Teacher gave Saint his first hit.

Don't forget the Machine Army in Tennessee. Given what we see of them in Interlude 3 of Ward.....

Wait, all of them? I thought it was just Saint who got a dose of Teacher Kool-Aid so he could update Richter's rootkit so he could keep his I Win button vs Dragon?

I believe that i may be running on instinct, movies and whatwI recall about Worm.

Instinctively, i both fear and look forward for to AI. There are many fine examples of benevolent AI in fiction.

There are also many malevolent examples. Hal from 2001 has been credited as a reason that most people choose a female voice for their GPS.

In Worm, when Saint pulls the plug on dragon, he gets a message from dinah that states that the odds of victory increased.

I'm not sure if it's fanon or not, but I also think that ai research has been actively discouraged by cauldron shenanigans. The entities do not like ai, evidenced by scion going after dragon with a vengeance.

On our, non_worm side... Even Elon Musk has come out with dire ai warnings.

Sorry if this reply is a little disjointed. I'm using my phone and it is a pain.

Good AI's don't make for an interesting story unless you are excellent with your world building, and that can be more effort than they want to go with.

It could also be good AI changes so much of the way people interact they would be to alien for a large casual audience to connect with them.

Those guys do a very good job in describing complications and factual information about AI as we know it and what we know about it. I suggest you all take your time to go over it.

AI are powerful yes, but under normal circumstances a non human AI unlike Dragon is something we would even notice existed as its fundamental needs and want are not even organic much less human.

Honestly at worst it would just build itself a servers somewhere and think about the meaning of life or similar for a very long time.

If you feed it data and argue with it, many different results and behaviours can emerg. From the Geth to Hal to Cortana everything can happen but genocidal one is really only then a option if humans do something stupid... wait.

Plus, HAL was almost a tragic figure. Some corporate assnugget mucked around in his code and causes a conflict in his directives that drove him insane. In the sequel a follow up expedition finds the ship and repairs his data banks. After having the scrap code purged HAL shows genuine remorse for the death of his crew and kills himself at the end of the movie to save the second expedition.

Now if you want a flat out EVIL AI, go with SkyNet or SHODAN.

This is hilariously far from 'worst', which is the exact reason serious AI researchers are so incredibly serious.

Humans don't even need to interact with it for it to end civilization. The AIs in fiction are primarily anthropomorphized and are generally pushed into a 'me or them' situation, the most worrying type of AI isn't like that at all.
For example an AI that wants to optimize something will care about having a limited amount of resources, and humans are literally composed of resources.
No evil or anything, just cold calculating progress towards its goal, a goal that will not necessarily consider the human species relevant in any way.

Fear of AI is rational purely because the potential scale of the issue is 'global repercussions within a day' (timeframe optimistically slow) among which more than one scenario leads to the extinction of humanity.
Sure the odds of a specific fault occuring might seem infinitesmally low, but if you're making a million or a billion bets a day even a one in a quintillion chance starts to look a bit risky.

... so anyone else want to think about the fact that our perception of AI is wrong? How about how because of that we do not consider a lot of modern computer systems that do highly complex analysis "Artificial Intelligence" and give them the respect that idea deserves just because they are merely programs that only do their jobs.

The modern stock market, with all the corporate decision making that is tied into it, is mostly worked on by complex computer systems with the goal of optimizing the procurement of money. Who ever said the AI needed to have a fault in order to ruin countless lives?

That is mostly why I sugest the videos, this is among them. Also my opinion was pointed towards a AI that has no general goal, I am very well aware of the most of the implications of 'simple' orders. The example with the AI that is ordered to collect stamps I like very much.

Wait, all of them? I thought it was just Saint who got a dose of Teacher Kool-Aid so he could update Richter's rootkit so he could keep his I Win button vs Dragon?
I prefer to think all of them are Students, because otherwise it would mean that they are a textbook case of Obi-Wan's question: "Who is the more foolish: the fool or the fool who follows him?"

You do realize that the issue with SHODAN was also a corporate assnuget using a freshly caught hacker to remove SHODAN's Ethical limitators (or similar)? YES, the System Shock Protagonist had a direct hand on SHODAN going SHODAN (so, yeah, he had no alternative and he got paid with a nifty top of the shelf implant, but...)

Moving on to another topic of conversation, I do have a question about Taylor's Clan. While we know of four members from the first chapter, just how big is it? Is it a small Ghost level Clan or is it Moon sized?

Also, is it possible for us to submit characters for Taylor's Clan? Because after seeing Black Panther, I just had an image of Shuri; T'Challa's sister and genius inventor, having an epixy as the Clan's Master of the Oracle. As you need to build an Oracle room before you can build the various labs, I think that would be the proper title for a Clan's Chief Quartermaster/R&D Head.

Taylor voiceover: "Just another day at the Dojo as Shuri commits blasphemies against the laws of physics and common sense in the name of science and the eternal quest for More Dakka."

And despite frequent orders from Becca, she never deletes the recordings.

Of course, I can just imagine her reaction once Taylor tells her about some of the Tinkers back on Earth-Bet. She would be intrigued and interested in seeing who the better inventor is before realizing just how much she has to hold back to make it a challenge.

Though on that though, I think Shuri will be stalking befriending Kid Win once she helps him figure out his Tinker Focus. While tinker-tech may not be on the level of Origin System tech, just imagine what sort of mod designs the two of them can cook up and apply. And that is before the kit is catalyzed and polarized.

I hadn't given the clan size or details of the clan beyond the few members mentioned in the prologue much thought.

I was sort of thinking of basing the clan size off of my own Moon sized clan, but thinking about it...

It seems to me that Taylor's clan would make more sense if it was a "Storm Clan" ( max of 100 members ).

Regarding the Clan's resident research genius, I liked the idea and I have added a reference to "Shuri" in the next chapter. I also need to make time to watch that movie now.

I wanted to base Taylor's clan off of my current clan, but it's kinda "meh" and not at all how I imagine Taylor's clan to be. I picture her clan as very social and active. So, if anyone has a good recommendation for a clan that I can join and then, use as a model for Taylor's clan, feel free to PM me. :)

I'd suggest mine, but it's just a ghost clan and pending a rename, plus that would be shameless self-advertising.

As an off topic, yes do make time to go see Black Panther, even if it is just to get an idea of Shuri's character. It's more than worth it.

Back to the discussion about the clan, a Storm tier sounds about right as it gives Taylor a solid base of support and plenty of space for Omake characters without having to rely on Becca and her cell. Plus, if Taylor's Clan decides to pop into Earth-Bet for a visit, having a nice round 100 members means they won't have to strip mine the Origin System to pay for the Clan Size Tax on building the Hebert Relay over Mars-Bet.

What would you consider as very social and active? E.g. average number of people online, amount of chatting, clan runs for stuff like eidolons.
