Chapter Biography:
The Shadow Hunters Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes are a Loyalist Chapter whose bloodline is said to hail from the Second Founding Chapter known as the Disciples of the Throne. They are a highly secretive and mysterious group, whose true origins are unknown to all those outside the Chapter save for a select few trusted individuals.
Information regarding the Chapter is so inconsistent that even their founding is unknown. Some reports claim that the Shadow Hunters were founded following the Third Sphere Expansion, originally as a deterrent and guard against further Tau aggression. Other sources contain evidence that this Chapter has been in existence since the aftermath of the 9th Black Crusade. There have even been cases where the Chapter was reported to be destroyed entirely, such as during the events of the 11th Black Crusade, only to make an appearance at a later date, such as during the Second War for Armageddon.
Many of these secrets are maintained with the assistance of the Chapter's closest ally: the Officio Assassinorum. As expected, the details of how this alliance came to be are rare and difficult to determine. The leading theory behind the Assassinorum's support of the Chapter is that the Chapter, using its immense telepathic and espionage talents, saved the life of the Master of the Vanus Assassin Temple from death at the hands of a Chaos plot. It is said that the Chapter Master at the time, Kamran Laskaras, had slain a Daemon Prince of Tzeentch in single combat, which resulted in the wounds that would lead to his internment into the life support systems of a Venerable Dreadnought. However, all records relating to such events are highly classified, making this theory difficult to prove. What is known is that the Chapter Master remains alive to this very day and guides his successors even when in deep sleep via his immense telepathic abilities.
Like their parent Chapter, the Shadow Hunters possess a large concentration of psykers within their ranks. However, due to a minor form of Geneseed mutation, such psychic powers take on a unique form: universal telepathy. Every Astartes that possesses the Geneseed of the Shadow Hunters Chapter possesses an inherent mental link with all others. In addition, this means that all Techmarines within the Chapter are skilled in the rare art of Technomancy. Even those that do not manifest full psychic powers can tap into this telepathic ability to share thoughts and even memories with their brothers. The range of this ability varies depending on the concentration of Shadow Hunters in a given location and their individual psychic potential. However, even a Battle Brother that otherwise lacks any psychic strength beyond that of a standard human can sense the presence of a Battle Brother from nearly a hundred kilometers away at minimum. The greatest recorded range that a Shadow Hunter marine could sense a Battle Brother from was from Captain Alistair of the 3rd Company, when he directed a squad of Space Marines from nearly a million kilometers away in his Strike Cruiser,
Fist of Silence, while the linked Astartes were infiltrating a Tau fortress upon the world of Sempora.
However, this incredible telepathic skill comes at a cost: no member of the Chapter without a psyker rating of Delta or higher is capable of learning any other psychic discipline. As a result of this mutation, the Shadow Hunters adopted a form of Warfare based primarily around stealth and sabotage, combining their affinity for unmatched coordination with their psychic discipline's ability to render themselves invisible to living beings. During the Second War for Armageddon, the Shadow Hunters dealt primarily in countering Ork Kommandos, preventing numerous ambushes and the destruction of vital shipments of supplies.
Uniquely for most Chapters, the Shadow Hunters also possess large numbers of Power and Force weapons as well as Camo-Cloaks. Whether these weapons were gifts or stolen is unknown, however, the possibility exists that they were presented as payment by the Officio Assassinorum in exchange for the Shadow Hunters' services. Their skills at information-gathering and infiltration make them perfectly suited for the silent work of the Imperium's finest assassins, either as assassins themselves or as support units.
