@Leingod Two questions, don't exactly have to do with this situation but will be a thing for later.
1) Shapeshifting, is that Ki or Magic based? Can't be sure, because Ki can do some pretty crazy things.
2) Puar's flight, is that a learned ability like his shapeshifting or could he always do that? Because if it's a prior we might be able to learn flight from him, which would be handy in all sorts of ways.

They're both magic. BTW I'm going with the Negima distinction between ki/magic in that "ki is your own power, magic is power you pull from outside."
That is a rather different thing than Dragon Ball, but alright. That means that despite being magic, we can STILL learn it with our Ki specialty, as long as we use our own power to fuel it.

No, there are differences in what each can do, it's just that where there's overlap, that's the main way you can tell whether it's magic or ki. Some things are impossible for one but not the other, some things are easier or more effective with one than the other (flight, for example, is easier with magic), and so on.
Ah, so it's more than just where you are drawing the power, they are different things. Rather different message than what is implied with "ki is your own power, magic is power you pull from outside.", which seems to just say the difference is source.
Well then, while it won't be easy, we should still endeavor to learn either Shapeshifting or Flight. They have so many possible uses.

Well, by the time the Saiyans arrive everyone who matters even the slightest bit can fly. So at the very least, you won't be totally reliant on magic for that after a certain point in time.
That's a whole 12 years from now. I'd really like to be able to fly before then, with just how useful it is.

out of all the choices the cave seems to be the best bet. any of the others have to high a risk to Bulma as she only recently started to learn to defend herself. between Goku and us we shouldn't have to many problems

Between Nimbus and the Power Pole, Goku has enough vertical mobility that the maze shouldn't provide any trouble for him, meaning he can easily move around scouting, disabling bandits, and so on. We shouldn't have too much problems, either, and if necessary there's probably some hiding spots we can find in the maze for Bulma.

With the power pole and any amount of staff skill, wide area sweeps can deal with waves of mooks, and any elite mooks and vehicles can be handled as they come.
While other options might be better for general defensive tactics, they have a bit too much risk for Bulma.

Going back to this: yes, but sometimes it can be hard to tell at a glance between something that's being done with ki and something that's being done with magic. Instant Transmission, for example, is ki, even though it's friggin' teleportation. The same for Roshi shooting lightning out of his hands like the Emperor. The "ki's source is internal, magic's is external" thing is how you can tell which is which if you aren't sure.
It's not something that's likely to come up a lot during the quest, but it's there. I like worldbuilding.
