A limitation of "yourself plus the inanimate objects you are carrying/wearing" is a common limitation for many techniques throughout fiction. If you want an in universe reason, its possible that you can't substitute anything with chakra besides your own.
It's a common limitation in Fiction, but we haven't seen anything like that in Naruto. Every single technique we've seen that worked on an individual worked on people they were holding as well. What's more, you can substitute with things with Chakra, that is canon (people have substituted with bunnies (all living things have chakra), their own clones, and DM said we can substitute with our comrades if they're willing).
Feels like a trap, which is why the rest of us ain't picking it. Plus, we should evac, not stand and fight.

If it's anything like the Uchiha Compound, it's *pretty* big. A good dozen blocks atleast, it is it's own chunk of the city.
Or that. Is every Hyuuga a ninja? The Uchiha have a lot of people who are just merchants and the like.
Remember, much of the compound was destroyed during the Kyubi attack that killed several hundred people within the compound. Of course, it is smaller.

I mean, they still HAVE the land, even if most of it is still empty/full of destroyed buildings. So it'd be land we'd have to cover to get out of here, since I'd imagine they'd rebuild center out rather than from a side.
I mean... we can TELEPORT out of here. That's a good way to get out. Plus, Kakashi knows some good earth jutsu, we aren't here alone.

During substitution? As long as we can pay the probably-increased chakra cost, don't see why not.
IC, it wouldn't be an assumption, Shirou knows how jutsu work a lot more than we do. If we can't, Shirou won't. If we can, then Shirou will.
