Provocation
Scarlet Justice - ep. 124
"Provocation"
[Days of Thunder: Chapter of Spiral Fox, Part 2]
---

Two days have passed. It's the middle of the week by now, and should be a good time to get some errands done. The heat wave that Fio predicted has arrived, and as such it is quite a bit warmer than usual. That hasn't stopped the village from moving, however - the unusually high heat is seen as just a minor inconvenience when compared to what we've been experiencing, so most are willing to bear with it and continue with their warm season projects.

As for me, I have an important meeting. Whether the other party has time in their schedule for it is irrelevant. I will make it so.

"Fio, darling. I'm heading out now."

"Got it!"

"I would like your opinion on today's outfit before I leave."

Her head pops up from behind the couch, before she leans over the back to look at me. The outfit in question is meant to capture the flourish of summer while drawing on my status as an influential upper class woman. And so, I am properly clad in silk from head to toe. A dazzling light blue shirt, pink shawl with floral prints, and a wrap skirt in the same colour to cover my lower half.

"You look like you jumped straight out of a magazine."

"You carry on too much."

"I'm super serious. You look amazing, Lili."

"Thank you kindly. You know, I did think the exact same thing when I saw Ane-ue the first time," I say as I apply my lip gloss.

"Yeah." She sighs. "Man, does she have a body on her. I was too drawn in to even get jealous."

"Right?" I put on my sunglasses and shake out my hair. "Well, it's time to get moving. I have some serious business to take care of..."

"Be careful. Don't chop the old man up too fine."

"No guarantees," I say ominously.

"Ah, well. Here," Fio says as she hops over the couch. "Have some positive energy for the road."

She hugs me tightly and I squeeze back. Fio's hugs are just the best. They remind me so much of Midori and Luna.

"Thank you, darling. Take care, and I will be back soon enough."

"I'll order in lunch for us. Feeling like spicy chicken today."

"Lovely." I pat her head before starting off in my wooden sandals. As soon as I open the door, I get a taste of how hot it is outside. But we serpents are built well enough to deal with a little heat.

Many of the village's inhabitants are taking it easy, resting with cool drinks and snacks in hand. Some are manually fanning themselves, while others break out small electric fans with their spinning plastic blades. In any case, the vendors around here are fattening their pockets swiftly, and their fortunes won't be souring too soon.

Hm. I probably could get a nice tan if I lounged on the roof a while, couldn't I...

"Hey, Red! Fancy seeing you out today! Looking luxurious, too."

"Miss Inuzuka. A pleasure, as always," I say to Tsume as she approaches. Today she has slightly less layers on, wearing a black tank-top that shows off her muscular arms. Kuromaru is with her again, and I rub behind his ear gently as greeting. "I take it you have a grievance with me for the events of last week."

"You'd be wrong about that. Kiba wasn't talking much about what happened, but I got the story straight from the Hyuuga wonder boy himself."

"Neji came to visit you. Interesting."

"And apologize. Hana was her usual self, all pouty that her little baby brother got hurt." She snorts and rolls her eyes. "Seriously, that kid...anyways, he was all patched up when we got him back and found out what happened, so it wasn't a big deal. You, on the other hand...just a bit scarier than I imagined. Just a tiny bit."

"That much, then."

"Whipping five practically chuunin-level boys is one thing, but five clan kids? And all at once? Information's getting out a bit slowly because of the heat, but the rank and file are already gossiping like crazy about it. Shikaku was apparently too shocked to make one of his sassy jokes or anything like that. Kakashi was all casual about it, though. Guess that's average for geniuses like you."

"Perhaps so," I say.

"Reaction overall is...ah, kind of mixed?"

"There are many who now fear your overwhelming strength," Kuromaru says. "You should expect to meet a few more forms of resistance as you progress through the ranks, and foreign nations learn the extent of your powers."

"I expected as much. It seems I was right to become proactive at this juncture."

"What might you mean?"

"I am going to advance to the highest plane in this land, one day soon. I have told several of my most trusted comrades already, so of course you should be in that number. The position of Hokage...with my strength, it will be one that can change the world at large. A proper revolution...that is my ultimate goal."

"Ambitious," Kuromaru says with a nod.

"No kidding. Well, the answer's obvious for us," Tsume says with one hand on her hip. "Where you lead, I'll follow, Miss Scarlet Viper."

"Agreed. I believe the Inuzuka as a whole will be available to you. Especially now that you have the favour of the great Inugami Clan."

"Yes. The favour of the Luminous Black Wolf herself...it is a blessing not easily forgotten. I will be sure to do well by you all. Even Kiba, troublemaker that he is." I move some of my hair backwards behind my ear. "If I might ask, what are you two doing out in this weather? I figured those of the canine variety would be avoiding strenuous work today."

"We came back from a short errand to see the old man. Just a report or two, no big deal," Tsume says. "What about you, Red?"

"There were a few tasks for the day. For one, I was going to procure several facsimiles of my darling sister's photographs for distribution."

"Photos, eh. Of your sister? Thought you would have a few of her by now."

"Ah, that's right. Not many know at this point. Here," I say as I search my purse for the envelope. "Her name is Rose, and she's the newest addition to our little family." I take out a few photos and hand them to Tsume.

"Oh, wow! Look at that...cute little rascal, ain't she?"

"A human infant...she does look zealous, even for one of her age," Kuromaru says as he peers at the photos.

"Definitely a family resemblance. So...this one's your sister by blood, then?"

"Yes, that's correct," I say.

"Congrats to you and your mom. I know that you were pretty sour about your old man...but at least he did something positive on his way out, I guess."

"Yes. Those of the heavenly host do have a sense of humour at times."

"Don't they ever."

"There is also something else I mean to take care of," I say gravely to Tsume.

"What is it?"

"I am going to confront Jiraiya about his behaviour."

"Hm..."

"The Toad Sage...Scarlet Viper, while you do carry strength and status as an elite in this village, you must be careful. Politics in the Leaf, much like any large shinobi village, have a rough undercurrent that can wash you away in an instant," Kuromaru says. "Even if he is content to see you as less than a threat, there are others who will become agitated if they discover your plans."

"Of that much I am aware, sir. The consequences of recklessly charging in against those with power and influence in this village are more than dire...it is why I could let Hiashi Hyuuga off without so much as a word. To his credit, though...he has changed substantially. He has cast of the shackles of guilt and self-hatred, showing love towards his children and slowly starting to change the ways of his clan. I resent him for many things, but I respect his desire to change. It is a similar situation with Haha-ue, who once saw me as a nuisance. Now, as much of a hedonist as she still is, she treats me like a fellow queen, and is eager to better herself and make up for past mistakes. And of course, I couldn't end up resenting someone so shamelessly sincere in the end."

"Did King Pervert do something to cross you?" Tsume asks.

"He agitated my Naruto to the point where his comrades were worried about him. And Hina, she was so far out of her element that she felt forced to call on me for help," I say. "But the most reckless and infuriating thing was leaking classified information about Sasuke to Naruto. As if he could use it as some sort of motivational tool. Tsume. You and Kuromaru both know how hard I worked and how much I went through to bring that boy home, alive, after he betrayed the village. I will not have some doddering old man undo all of my efforts for the sake of a fucking training boost for his nephew."

"Shit. It's like that, then..." She lets out a breath and nods. "Have at him. You're right, you've worked too damn hard to let someone piss all of that effort away on a whim. You think you'll need backup?"

"I will be fine on my own, Tsume. Thank you, you really are a sweetheart."

She smiles. "I do my best. I'll let you get to your work, then. Just...be careful, alright?"

"Yes. Take care, both of you." As nice as it would be to have another woman by my side...I can't go and get Tsume caught up in things like this. I am well aware of the implications, of the subtle political currents when it comes to things like this. How it could tear apart my reputation in a blink if anyone were to find out. After all, this isn't just a talk. This is an elite kunoichi of two or so years, rushing into a verbal spar with a half-century old legendary shinobi, student of the greatest living Kage, mentor to the now deceased saviour of the Hidden Leaf. Tsunade's teammate and friend. Naruto's godfather.

A hero of the village.

"..."

But I have never shied away from playing the villain.

---

"We'll have your photos ready in three days."

I nod and hand the young woman behind the counter one of my business cards. She takes it and bows politely. Shino recommended this photo shop, and it is quite lovely. Air conditioned, too.

"Thank you kindly. Please call if you come upon any issues. I am in no rush and have no intention of causing you distress."

"We will keep you informed, ma'am. Thank you for your generous patronage."

"You're quite welcome." I put on my sunglasses. "A pleasant day to you."

She nods and bows again as I head out. All told, that should come out to about five hundred photographs total, in various sizes. A few for the wallet, some that will be framed, many that I will have to hand out later as I gush about my precious baby sister...ah, I miss her so much. But I know that we will be together again soon enough. I hope Mama and Touka are doing well with her. Maybe a call later on, just to hear her voice...

"..."

But for now, I have to focus. It's time to get to work.

I remember Jiraiya's chakra signature from the few times we've been in close contact. A large chakra, like Naruto's. Strong and refined from years of training and combat. More than enough to stand out to any sensor if not suppressed. And since he's been confirmed to be in the village, it shouldn't be so...with one obvious and unsavoury exception.

He really is trash, as Tsunade tells me during her tipsier moods.

I flick my tongue out and go through my memories to figure which direction he might be in. Not terribly far...ah, I know this area. Kurenai and I have gone to a particular place many times before for lunch dates. She's not around from what I can tell, but my target is.

"Shushu-ya."

I stop a moment to confirm I have the right place. Yes, this is it. A large, yet cozy restaurant with a bar inside. Famous for its house-made brand of sake and absolutely delicious yakitori. It's grilled with the highest quality charcoal, seasoned and dressed, then served on a large plate. It would be lovely to have a bite right now, but...there are pressing matters to attend to. I step inside and walk past the restaurant's many wooden booths towards the bar. It has several stools in front of it, and behind the counter is a formidable wall of alcohols that seem to be from every corner of the planet.

The man of the hour is occupying one of these bar stools, a bottle of sake next to him. Unruly white hair, long enough to be tied into a tail that goes down his back. Bright and flamboyant clothing, from the red vest and vintage hand guards to the wooden geta on his feet. And of course, that uniquely branded protector on his forehead, marked with the character for oil and with two small horns jutting out of it.

A cursory sniff at the air tells me that he's just about done with his initial bottle, and will certainly be ordering more in a moment. He's not drunk quite yet. That's one reason my timing is good. The other is that he's harassing a woman next to him with short, dark hair, who clearly wants out but doesn't know how. She's one of my kouhai, isn't she? I don't recall her name at the moment, but I can make use of our difference in rank...

"I should be better with names...well. Time to get started."

I give my sunglasses a light tap to reset them, and then start my walk towards the two. The woman casts a quick glance towards me, and I clear my throat to lock her attention in.

"Good day to you both. I am quite sorry to interrupt, but I do believe my junior here has something to tend to. Something that she should have tended to a day ago, I believe?" I tap my foot twice to signal annoyance.

"Huh?" Jiraiya is slow to catch on, completely nonplussed. As expected.

"Oh, yes!" My kouhai quickly picks up on my play and nods vigorously, sliding down from the stool. "I'm so, so sorry! Captain Kobayashi, is there still time?"

"Very much so. I understand that this might be your day off, but I would like for your work to be completed as soon as possible. I would rather not have a lieutenant's work added to my own," i say sternly.

"Ma'am! My apologies, ma'am. I'll get everything done right away."

"Good. Be on your way." I pull down my glasses briefly to give her a quick wink.

"Yes, ma'am." She nods and mouths out a thank you before leaving, purse clutched tightly against her chest. Now it's just me and the old man.

There's a slow churning of my blood...a rising heat inside of me that I know I need to control. Everything from the past few days is coming back into my memory. I have a feeling that this talk is going to get unpleasant quickly.

"I doubt you came out all this way to chastise a subordinate." Jiraiya knocks back a cup of sake and pours another from the nearby bottle. The dim lights above us create soft shadows, and faint reflections in the counter's polished wood.

"I was on the road earlier, taking care of a few other things. But your perception is correct, I did not come here by chance. I came to see you."

"Hell of a way to do it," he says, annoyed. "I'm sure whatever work you had for my companion could have waited."

"That's quite the assumption on your part," I quip as I get onto the empty stool beside him.

"I guess I'm also right to assume that you won't be drinking any alcohol?"

"You catch on quickly. Ossan, good afternoon."

"Good afternoon, ma'am. Nice to see you again," the dandy gentleman says with a nod. His curled moustache is something he takes care of very well, and it is quite dazzling. He is also quite the barkeep, and an absolute gentleman. If only more of his type were in this world.

"I trust you are in good health today?"

"Yes, ma'am. Did you want your usual? It's hot outside," he says as he polishes a glass.

"If you could spare a moment, I would like that."

"Alright. It'll be a bit, did you want anything else while you waited?"

"No, no. I will be fine for now. Please do not rush or spare any quality...there are certain things that I need to discuss with this patron here."

"Yes, ma'am. A moment, then."

"Many thanks." I remove my sunglasses and set them on the bar counter. Jiraiya continues to drink away, and I focus on the bottles lining the back wall. I can actually read several of those foreign languages, now that I have a better view...hm. Perhaps I should study the unknown ones in my free time, once I move up a rank or two. There is a lovely language from the western part of the world that is delightfully romantic sounding.

"Patron...heh, that's a good one. So...what's your worry, little princess? Need some advice? Or did you just long to see me?" he asks in a dry tone.

"I could make you guess as to why I'm here, but I'm not in a particularly playful mood at this hour. So we will cut to the chase: you are going to tell me what has been going on with Naruto lately."

He shrugs his large shoulders. "Nothing to tell. Kid's been pouring himself into training recently. Making some good strides, too. We actually tested something neat the other day-"

"You mean with the Nine Tails' chakra," I interrupt.

"..." He doesn't move, but I can tell he's tense. "And where did you get that information?"

"My own brain. I am a sensor type shinobi, or did that slip you somehow?"

"Hmph."

"I don't know exactly what it was you did, but I know that it has made him more aggressive."

"You saw him?"

"We had a meeting a few days ago."

"Heh. So is that why you're here? He get a little frisky on you?" Jiraiya chuckles and lifts his cup.

"This is no joking matter, and I hope you don't mean to play coy the entire time," I say firmly. "Please be serious. I have sought you out for a reason, Lord Jiraiya."

"Listen, kid. I really don't have to answer to you for any reason. Naruto is my charge, and this is part of my training regimen. If you know about the power inside of him, he has to get control of it. I'm just testing a few things out, and they won't hurt him. It's none of your business, alright?"

I turn myself to face him squarely as he sips at his sake. "You are gravely mistaken, Jiraiya."

"Got a mouth on you, too. You're more like Midori than I thought."

"Hinata came to me, confused and upset at what was happening. That so called small bout of aggressiveness you were speaking of? It was starting to affect her relationship with him. It was even making that Sakura upset."

"Girl problems are normal. It happens, no need to freak out."

"Girl problems. And what would someone like you know about any of that?" I ask.

"It's. Nothing. Goddammit, I don't know what the hell you're getting hysterical about." He pours out the last bit of his sake and signals for another bottle. "Listen, I'll explain it real slow for you."

"Jiraiya. Do not-"

"Ah, ah. Easy. Look, he's psyched up because of the fox chakra and the new training regimen. That's all it is," he says with a languid tone. "Let him cool off, and in a few days, it'll be like nothing happened. Simple. Is that all you've got? Because I gotta be honest, I'm not interested in teenage drama-"

"You hurt my loved one. You made him upset, and almost made him think that I was betraying him. That I was hiding things on purpose. Don't fuck around with me," I growl. "You know exactly how deep this goes, and you know for a fact that things have been getting bad."

"I suggest you watch your tone, kid."

I don't have any nerve left. Fuck this.

"Go ahead and make me."

"Excuse me?" he says as he swivels his head.

"Go ahead and fucking make me," I repeat. "A small man like you doesn't get to order me around."

"Listen here, and listen good," he snarls as he makes a full turn to face me. He leans over, making an attempt to intimidate me with his stature, his face slightly flushed from the sake binge. "It doesn't matter how high your rank is, or that you're a rich girl, or that you're the Hokage's pet student. You've got some goddamn nerve coming here and talking to me like I'm some jackass off the street. Learn your place, you snot-nosed little bitch."

"..."

He pulls back, but not without leaking some of his murderous aura towards me. "Now I suggest you get out of here. Because the next thing I'll do is put you over my knee and embarrass you in front of everyone here."

I laugh at him, and he stares back in confusion.

"Aha...so it seems like I struck a nerve earlier. Perhaps you're a small man in more ways than I once thought."

"I told you-"

"Ma'am. Your drink is ready."

"Ah. Thank you, ossan." I sip at my strawberry flavoured beverage and nod. Delicious as always. "Impeccable. Fine work again. If I need another round, I will call."

"Of course. Is...everything okay?"

"Very much fine. The..." I pause and give Jiraiya a haughty look. "Lord...Jiraiya and I are merely having a heated discussion of sorts. About things near and dear to our hearts."

"..."

"He felt that I went too far with a certain comment. Please forgive his outburst, as it has been quite a time for him lately. I don't believe he would be here indulging himself so heavily otherwise."

"Understood." The older man bows and takes away Jiraiya's empty sake bottle, going to tend to other patrons. Bless him for keeping an eye out, but I won't need help to deal with this lout.

"I could end you in a million different ways right now. Perhaps I don't have the exact same social status as you enjoy, but you've made a grave mistake if you think my fangs aren't filled with venom," I say menacingly. "Your insults are cute, and they're meaningless."

"Don't test me, brat. None of our mutual connections prevents me from putting you in your place."

I take another sip of my drink. "Mm. Delicious. Yes, we should get to the real reason that I'm done with you and your bullshit. You were the one that told Naruto about Sasuke's situation."

"And what?"

"That wasn't supposed to be an open secret, you understand. Why did you do it?" I ask calmly. "That entire plan wasn't something I did for the fun of it. It was meant to protect Sasuke from his own foolish ambition, and the machinations of Danzo Shimura with his organization ROOT."

"The Hokage told me as a high level operative. Be as mad as you want about it, I'm entitled to that information."

"And he trusted you to keep it close to your chest," I counter. "But since you want to play guardian, you blurted it out to your apprentice, hoping that it would further fuel his desire to become strong. It's little wonder that you're so compatible. He's just like you, and you haven't aged a day past fourteen. You see yourself in him, and he's certainly exhibiting reckless traits. So why did you do it? Why would you tell him such a thing, stripping it of necessary context and knowing that he would be intensely disturbed because of it?"

"A little motivation never hurts. Every great shinobi has a rival to keep them on their toes. He's wanted to fight Sasuke for a long time, and you kind of robbed him of that chance..."

"If it had been him on that mission, you wouldn't have a godson left to train. Sasuke would have disappeared, and the other shinobi on that mission, whoever they might have been, would be all lying in graves at this moment. I robbed him of a fight with his supposed best friend, who would have killed him for the sake of power. I wonder if you listen to yourself."

He grunts and knocks back another cup of sake. "I wanted him to go as far as he could. Telling him that his rival was getting training from the best was a good way of doing that. And it's worked. He's going at it harder than ever. Why wouldn't you be happy for his growth?"

"Because it's ruining his relationships in the process," I say. "Do you understand what you're doing?"

"What's necessary. He was left that power for a reason by the Fourth Hokage."

"His father," I say quietly.

"And who told you that?" he asks.

"Nobody. I used my brain again. I've had it figured out ever since we left the Shinobi Academy. I know that there is a reason for his power, why it was left in his hands. But that doesn't mean he has to go full throttle using it, risking the chance of being completely consumed by a violent, hateful force."

There's also something else. When I...looked at him, with those eyes. There was a distant shadow that I couldn't make out well. It wasn't like the ethereal flames representing the spirit, it was something else entirely. Even Fubuki doesn't understand the meaning. I can't talk about it with anyone here yet...but I will find out what it means.

"He's aggressive, spoiling for action. Give the kid what he wants."

I blink a few times. "What?"

"You have to fight him now. It's simple enough, I think." He sips from his cup. "Kakashi has been telling me that he's been antagonizing Sasuke. Sasuke, he obviously doesn't know that his secret has been revealed. But he's pushing back a bit. And Sakura, poor girl...she's trying to keep them apart, but eventually..."

"So you're saying that because of your buffoonery, Naruto needs a proper outlet. Training and working out aren't enough. And that extra chakra you've exposed him to isn't helping matters."

"It's not my fault that he heard about what you did, beating up on five kids at once. I mean, I don't really believe that's the whole story, but I didn't expect something like that to come up at all. It probably pushed him over the edge, along with everything else."

This is a fine mess he's created. And he's relaxed, as if it's no big deal. Or perhaps he's intoxicated by now. I really can't tell.

"If he and Sasuke fight - and given enough time, they will - then it'll be real bad for the other kid. I hear he's not fully recovered yet, but he's not one to back down from reckless stuff, as you know well. So..."

"You are supremely irresponsible," I say.

"Not the first time I've heard that. Won't be the last, either."

"Why didn't you tell him the reasons that Sasuke was going to train with Lord Hokage? You should have at least sat him down to explain properly."

"I didn't get to. Kid was hyped up and uninterested."

I shake my head. "Fucking unbelievable. You really are trash, Jiraiya."

"You really have a foul little mouth. I told you once already, don't get saucy with me."

"All of this coming from history's strongest man-child. It's almost adorable on your end." I sip at my drink again and let out a frustrated sigh.

So it's come down to this. More fighting. One of the few things this moron has identified correctly is the tension of the entire situation. Naruto is getting continually agitated, and it might be so even after our earlier talk. The interactions between members of Team Seven are abbreviated, but they do happen. And with each meeting, there is a chance that things could suddenly escalate out of control. The two would fight. And Sasuke, idiot trash that he is, wouldn't turn down any sort of challenge, even if he is in a weakened state. But the physical beating would be the absolute least of my problems. If he shatters while in this state, we all know where he would land.

ROOT.

Perhaps I am being paranoid. Maybe Sasuke won't go that far from the start. Maybe he'll just brood a long while, maybe he'll get back on his feet the next day and shrug everything off. Maybe nothing will happen.

But we left it to chance that he would resist Orochimaru's curse. And where did that lead us? Here. Right here. We are not going to roll the dice more than necessary. A chance that he could fall into the hands of Danzo Shimura is a chance too big to take.

My only choice is to indulge Naruto's violent urges. He needs an outlet. And my promise to be there for him was never limited to emotional support. We will fight. Many things depend on it.

I let out a breath. "Set it up, then."

"Set what up? A fight? Why would I do that much work? I'm not the one wetting my panties about the entire thing. I have a lot of things to do around here, so I don't have time to set up play dates," Jiraiya says.

"Play date. Is that what you would call it..."

"Well, that and I don't want to see your ugly crying after you get whipped by the kid. Jounin or otherwise, you wouldn't last an entire minute if he comes at you full force. I've got the scars to prove it."

"You cannot be serious," I say, incredulous. "Do you know who I am?"

"A prissy little bitch too big for her training bra. Yes, I know who you are. You're Midori's little sister, who did well enough in a support role during the invasion, beat up a bunch of scrub kids, and punched a genin out in the middle of nowhere." He drinks down his sake and refills the cup. "I don't know what the old man was thinking, letting someone as arrogant as you rise through the ranks so quickly. All that power's gone to your pretty little head, and now you think you can talk to anyone you want however you want. You have a little respect, but so does every other half-decent jounin in this village. You're a big-headed, spoiled little brat who thinks the world is going to be handed to her on a platter. You think you're better than everyone else. That's the same trap he fell into."

"What is it, then," I say with an inconsiderate tone. "You think I'm going to end up like Orochimaru? You know how to push my buttons at least, you useless fucking reprobate."

"You-"

"You don't know who the fuck I am," I snap at him. "You don't know anything about me, Jiraiya. A brat? A spoiled princess? Fuck you. Fuck you and your useless, petty psychoanalysis. Orochimaru? You think that I am going to end up like him? Nothing you've said is true. I have come up against everything that he has and more. I have persevered, I have gained power through bettering myself, I have reached a higher level of existence, and I didn't have to do any of the disgusting things that he did. I am better than him in every single way, and the only thing that connects us, by the thinnest of threads, is our affinity for serpents."

I could stop there. Perhaps I should.

But I won't. Crossing me, insulting me, threatening me most of all. I won't stand for it. I will drive this sword that is my tongue into his chest. Drunk or not, he's earned this. This is what he has been asking for from the start.

"But I know what really has you bitter...Jiraiya."

He turns his head, one eye poking through the shadow over his face. The sake cup comes down on the counter harshly. I feel his murderous flow wrapping around me, bleeding out to where the old bartender and other patrons can feel the energy spiking through the air.

I stare back at him, hot blood moving through me. And my own darkness rushes out to meet his, pushing back, flexing and bending. The glass, the cup, the sake bottle, all vibrating intensely next to us.

"That taste in your mouth...that taste of weakness. I can see it etched onto your pathetic face. You talk down to me, you try to bully me for one simple reason. It's not just that I'm better than you. More than that."

"Stop. Talking."

"I did everything that you could not. I grabbed hold of every dream that you failed to," I say with a cruel smile. "I did everything better. I made more of myself than you ever could, and was humble enough to live in the darkness without praise. Where you failed to give the old man hope, to spur him forward no matter the cost, I rose up and beyond myself to motivate him. Where you could not strike down a comrade in order to save him, I risked myself and chased down someone who hurt me, who even tried to kill me. I gave him hope, a second chance. You boast of your successes, you ride high on your past accolades, but you and I know the truth, Jiraiya. I am the saviour that you wish you could be. I am the person that you will never be."

He trembles with anger, but can say nothing. We both know that I'm right. We both know the truth. The intense pressure between us dies down, and all of the glasses on the counter stop vibrating.

"I am the one who has Midori's affection. I am the one trusted by Lord Sarutobi, as his elegant ace, as his sword of justice. And I am the one who holds the greatest space inside of Naruto's heart. More than you ever could. That was why I came here in the first place, thinking that you understood. But I was foolish to believe such a thing. You could never understand. You were never there for him like I was. I gave him unconditional love when you were absent. And nothing you say can change that."

"..."

I down the rest of my drink and wipe my mouth with a napkin. "That's all I have to say to you. My business is done."

"Yeah, fine. Get out of here."

"If you've resolved to let Naruto and I settle this ourselves, then I warn you not to interfere."

"Stop making empty threats," he says with his hand around the sake bottle.

"Then I will promise to bring you to ruin. How's that?" I toss my hair backwards and put on my sunglasses. "Ossan, I'm off. Thank you for the delicious beverage, and please take care. My apologies for the earlier disturbance."

"Of course, Miss Kobayashi. And there was no trouble caused by you. Hopefully you visit again soon."

"I surely will. Jiraiya...another time." I slip down from the bar stool and shoulder my purse.

"I'm not going to let it lie..."

"..."

"This village and everyone in it is precious to me. And I would give everything to protect this place. It's my home. It always has been."

"And you think that I have no interest in preserving my new home?" I say without looking at him.

"You might have too much of an interest. You might become too attached, too greedy. Thinking that everyone belongs to you, that you have to protect them by any means. What happens when you can't save everyone, no matter what you do or try? What happens when you see someone you loved and cared for die? What if it happens more than once? You'll fall like Orochimaru did. Become someone who starts with a good heart, but has it twisted by this world's horrors...and eventually..."

I think of my mother, who was taken from me...and my father, who I sent away with my own hands.

"That's why I said you don't know a thing about me, Jiraiya. None of that pain is foreign to me...it made me the woman you see in front of you. I have risen beyond it, and I will rise further still. You just watch me."

"I see."

I turn on my heel to face him. "And if you truly want to oppose me...you had better bring everything you have, Toad Sage."

Jiraiya looks at me a moment before returning his gaze to the bottles on the wall. "You can count on it."

"..."

I stroll out of the restaurant and back into the midday sun. It's still as warm as it was this morning.

"Things could have been different. But they aren't. I refuse to have my life ruled by regret. You and everyone else will learn soon enough...I am not afraid to make enemies. And I am not afraid to erase them once they get in my way."

I'll stop and see Naruto at home later today. The sooner that we can organize this little tussle, the better.

"Hospitality"
[Days of Thunder: Chapter of Spiral Fox, Part 3]
---

Another morning in late spring.

"..."

The fight with Naruto will take place in two weeks, as we've decided. Proper arrangements will be made and updated as the days progress. Until then, we will continue on our separate paths. I don't have any need to do special training for the upcoming event. Although what Jiraiya said was quite ominous...

"Scars, then..." A Naruto that was strong enough to overpower him so suddenly. Would he be about be even with Sasuke's curse mark form? Or stronger than that? It remains to be seen, but I did ascend to a new form and eliminate a strong opponent in Kakuzu. If it comes to that...I have the tools to crush him completely.

I yawn and rub at my head. That's enough worrying for now. Time to eat and take care of a few things. Fio is already out of bed, and I can hear the shower running faintly. Seems like she's on duty today, so I can cook her a good breakfast before she goes. I pick up the cordless phone, check the clock on my nightstand, and then dial Hina's number.

"Good morning, Hinata Hyuuga speaking."

"Good morning, Hina."

"Good morning, Lili. How are you doing?"

"Just fine, my love. I wanted to call and give you a proper update regarding your husband. Many things have happened...have you eaten breakfast yet?"

"Not yet. Have you?"

"No, I'm about to cook right now. Call me back when you've done so, won't you?"

"I will. Until then, Lili."

"Yes, until then." I hang up and set the phone down, then start with my usual stretches for the morning. Always nice to keep the body flexible, and if anything is off I can take care of it before I run into trouble.

"Hey, morning."

"Good morning, Fio."

"..." She steps into view, wearing one of my bathrobes. Her head tilts to one side.

"Something the matter, love?"

"Nothing. Just...wondering how you do that."

"This?" I currently have one leg against the side of my head. "It took a bit of practice to get it down cleanly. When I first started training with Midori-nee, I could only get it about...maybe three quarters of the way up? Not nearly as high as she could, either way."

"Even that much is impressive, though...hmm."

"If you want to work on your flexibility together, just let me know," I say as I smoothly set my leg down. "It might not be completely conducive to your normal combat style, but I don't think it would hurt."

"I'll think about it."

"Good. I'll make breakfast while you get yourself changed. Is it a busy day today?"

"Ah, not really. Just some conditioning and routines, simple things like that."

"I don't have too much to do myself, so I might pop in and see you."

"That'd be neat."

"Glad you agree. My presence is a gift in and of itself, you see."

She smiles. "Hard not to, with how you carry on."

I smile back and head to the kitchen. A nice big breakfast for today...let's go with rice and a tasty omelette, paired with yesterday's pot of rice. Enough to feed a household on its own, which means it's adequate for two growing kunoichi. Fio hops out of the bedroom in her now standard type of outfit: a shirt in rainbow colours and rugged-looking black pants that are rolled up past her ankles. I finish making our food and we sit down to eat together.

"I'll take care of our plates," I say as she finishes. "You go ahead and wash up before heading out. I'll be on the phone with Hina shortly."

"Got it. Thanks, Lili."

The phone rings and Fio gets up to toss it over to me. "Lili Kobayashi speaking."

"Good morning again, Lili. Have you finished breakfast?"

"Just now. Your timing is impeccable. So...our position as of right now. I had a lengthy chat with Jiraiya..."

I tell her everything that happened on the day in question. A sigh comes from the other end of the phone as I finish washing plates.

"So you've set up a fight with Naruto, then...I understand. It seems to be the only way. I've been keeping an eye on him, but he still seems a bit restless."

"I was thinking as much," I say as I set the last plate down to dry. I wipe off my hands and then return to the kitchen table. Fio quickly plants a kiss on my cheek before leaving. "Just as before, this is an attempt to head things off before they truly become troublesome."

"Yes. I wish that Lord Jiraiya was more responsible when it came to this. I know...that it can't be easy dealing with a world-changing power like that, and that mistakes would be made along the way. He's also been a positive influence on Naruto, which makes me happy. Having an older man in his life that pays attention to him closely..."

"The Hokage is a bit distant due to the nature of his job and that soft heart of his. And Iruka is more like an older brother."

"I was thinking the same, yes."

"Jiraiya does provide a unique and necessary influence."

"Even so...I think adults are supposed to give more serious thoughts to these sorts of things," Hina says. "I can't be wrong for thinking that, can I?"

"You're not, Hina. I feel the same."

"It's one thing to provide familial support, but that doesn't mean that everyone and everything else is meant to be sacrificed at the altar of progress. It's irresponsible and unfair. More than that, from what you've told me of the conversation you two had, he wasn't taking you seriously up until a certain point. I know you enough to figure out exactly what happened."

"I was thinking about showing more restraint."

"I know you were. With that said, I don't feel sorry for him after choosing to cross that line repeatedly. I'm not exactly sure how to feel about him right now, to be honest. I also have a desire to protect Naruto as much as I can, and so I don't want him to be recklessly influenced by others. Even if Lord Jiraiya has a close relationship with him, it doesn't mean that he can do whatever he wants. Pushing Naruto into his current state, and dismissing you so callously...I don't care for any of it."

I smile. Exactly the sort of talk I wanted to hear from her. "You can be assured that I won't allow this to go any further, Hina. As long as you continue to show your newfound strength on your side, things will end on a positive note."

"Thank you, Lili."

"Of course. I'm always here for you."

"It must be difficult for you as well. He's your precious friend, and you love him so much. Having to fight him so suddenly like this..."

"You're still thinking of me more than yourself...that's just like you, Hina. Thank you for worrying about me. I know that things will be fine in the end, especially once we get rid of all the tension trapped inside of him. I was nervous about my match with you, but after thinking about it for a while, I eventually came around. With these two weeks before our meeting, I expect the same thing to happen."

"If it's like that, then I feel better already. I'll pray for your safety and success from here on."

"Thank you, Hina."

"I should be thanking you. You really are an angel, Lili. Helping me to solve my problems...more than that, getting me into this happy situation in the first place. I didn't think I would ever be able to talk to Naruto, much less stand next to him. But now...um...hm..."

"Hina?"

"S-sorry. I was just thinking about...um...the fact that we..."

"Hold hands?" I say with a smug smile.

"Y-y-yeah. We, um...do things like that...sometimes."

"A bit scandalous on your part, no? What if someone saw you two?"

"W-we don't d-d-do things like that in p-public!"

I laugh. "So you two can show some restraint once in a while. Very good!"

"You really are terrible..."

"Aren't I? Did you want to take back that comment about me being an angel, then?" I tease. "Although, you probably won't have to. The great adversary of heaven known as the Devil had shining wings of his own, you know. Hmhmhm."

"I almost forgot about that out-sized ego of yours. But honestly, thank you for everything, Lili. I'm looking forward to where you'll lead all of us next."

"Well, one step at a time, as the ancients have said in one form or another. Let's bring our Naruto back to earth. From there, the world will be ours to conquer."

"Yes."

"Did you have anything else you wanted to speak about, Hina?"

"Nothing for now. We can have our usual chat later in the evening. Hanabi and I are going on an ice cream date today."

"Ooh, that sounds scrumptious. Both of you have fun. I'm going to buckle down on some paperwork and annoy a few politicians with phone calls. A light day, all in all."

"Productive as always. I'll call you later on, then. Take care, Lili."

"You as well, Hina."

I hang up and stretch my arms after setting the phone down.

"Alright. Let's do as I mentioned earlier and start on those documents...and if I do a good job, I'll treat myself to some mischief in town later. Hmhm."

---

"And done. Good work, Lili~"

I sigh happily and set my papers down into a neat pile. It's currently a little past noon, so...I think I'll head outside and pay Fio a little visit. I'm curious about her comrades - I haven't had a chance to see them around the village, though I have heard interesting things. Those young ones from the Hidden Sound, then.

Today isn't terribly warm, so I don't have to worry too much about sweating through my clothing. A regular shirt and jeans will work out. I find my sunglasses and perch them on my head, then do a mirror check. All set. I grab my keys, make sure all the entry points are sealed, and lock up before heading into the village. I should be able to find Fio quickly...she said that her team was using the common training area until they were properly assigned their own place within the village. It's a very large field where many different shinobi come to do standard exercises and conditioning. Because it's a shared space, there are restrictions on techniques and weapons so that no unfortunate accidents happen. Anyone with a desire to use such things is relegated to specific sections near the edges of the public space.

"Mm. She should be up there."

One of a few small streams cuts through this part of the common area. There are a few trees nearby, and flat rocks that can be used as seats or platforms. I walk on and finally see Fio, who is addressing her team.

"No slacking, please~"

"Eh, you already run us ragged. Let's have a break," one of the boys says.

"A break would be appreciated," the other chimes in.

"Hey! We've already had a bunch of breaks already, that's the reason we're still stuck here! And who asked you whether it was appreciated or not, weirdo?" The other girl present is clearly not amused.

"You guys really are boring sometimes. We haven't even started training yet, those were the warm ups," Fio pouts. "Come on, put some energy into this. For me, at least?"

"All of this after she went back and forth in that heat to check on you," the other girl says. "You ungrateful...eh? Chakra...so...so strong. Eh?"

"What's up all of a sudden?" Fio turns her head and spots me. I wave to her as I approach the group. "Ah! Lili, you dropped in after all!"

"Hello, my love. I finished up my work for the day, and my curiosity drove me to take a little stroll. How are we so far?" I ask as I push my sunglasses to my forehead.

"Doing great. Aside from the, you know, not training...but everyone's doing okay. This is awesome, I'll finally get to introduce you to the team properly!"

"Then by all means."

Fio nods and runs towards the first member, poking him in the side as he sits on one of the large rocks.

"Oi. Quit that..."

"This here is Suigetsu! You know him well enough from our daily talks. He's a member of the Hozuki Clan, he likes cutting stuff, and he really likes swords! He can also turn into water and junk. Not great in the heat, though. And he's a pretty thirsty fellow."

"Meh." A white haired boy with interesting blue eyes and very sharp teeth. On the tall side, and makes do with an oversized sword that is currently lying on the ground near his feet. It looks like something out of a fantasy manga, or an RPG. His dress matches his personality to this point, consisting of a plain purple shirt with blue pants. He also has several bottles on the sturdy looking belt around his waist, and is currently drinking from one as he observes me.

"A pleasure meeting you, Suigetsu," I say politely. "I trust that Fio has been treating you well."

"More or less," he says lazily. "Not half bad as a leader, if I had to say anything..."

"Aw, thanks!" Fio says with a smile.

"Yeah, yeah. Don't let it go to your head, punch girl. So...Lili. Or is it Lilith Kobayashi?"

"Lili is fine, if you like."

"You're the Scarlet Viper everyone's talking about."

"Indeed I am."

"Not bad...though you don't seem as menacing as people claim, you know. But I can totally see where they're coming from about the bitchy side," he says with a playful grin.

"An unfettered opinion, then. Refreshing," I quip.

He raises a brow at that. "Oi."

"My dear, you will have to do much better than that to get me to react. Fio will tell you the same. If you are attempting to have a confrontation, it will have to come at a later date. I am rather tied up at the moment."

"Tch. Right."

"Though I do appreciate your forward speech, Suigetsu. As long as you continue your good work, we will have no problems. I hear your swordsmanship is at a high level already."

"Yeah? Guess word's getting around, then. Fine with me. There are a couple of swords that I would like to collect in the near future..."

"I know a good smith, if you have any interest in quality products."

"I'll think about it. Thanks, though."

"You're quite welcome."

"And here's my other teammate! Her name's Karin!" Fio puts her arm around the red-haired girl's shoulder. She reacts by nervously pushing up her glasses. In fact, she's nervous all around, and her face is red with heat. Her eyes are a deep red behind her glasses, and she has fair skin. An unusual hair style as well: the left side is long and straight, while the right is shorter and spikier. She wears the regular Leaf uniform with the shirt sleeves rolled up. "She's pretty cool! Good with medicine, knows all sorts of things about chakra, and she's a sensor type kunoichi. Her ability to track people is amazing! And as you might have guessed, she reminds me a lot of you, Lili!"

"We do have a resemblance of sorts," I say with a smile. "Karin, is it? You have lovely hair."

"T-thanks. You...do too."

"You okay, Karin? You're heating up all of a sudden...does it have anything to do with that chakra you were sensing?" Fio asks her.

"Sorry, I was...just having a moment. Sorry about that. My ability reacts to certain things, and..."

"It's quite alright," I say gently. "If you need time to rest, please take as much as you need."

"T-thank you. It's really, um, nice meeting you. Fio has said a lot of good things, and...yeah. I'm not normally this nervous, but something's come over me all of sudden. I don't mean to be a bother."

"You're far from one, Karin." I give her another smile, and she timidly nods before smiling back. She's definitely...fixated on me. It's impossible to ignore at this point. And now I remember that this is the person Erika mentioned all that time ago, while we were on a mission together. She wanted to meet me, but was it for a romantic reason? I have to wonder. Well, now that I know she's part of Fio's group, things will be easier to sort out. "You've spoken to a good friend of mine in the past, yes? Mentioned that you wanted to meet?"

"I-I did...is it okay?"

"Yes. You may give Fio the information if it makes you more comfortable, and she can relay it to me later on."

"I might...do that. Thank you..."

"You're quite welcome." It's really hard not to tease her, but I don't want Fio to be inconvenienced today. But Karin is unbearably cute right now...oh, life can be cruel at times.

"And that's us! Leaf's Team Thirteen! There was another guy that they mentioned-"

"Hey, hey. Don't mention him by name. You'll jinx the security they've got on hand," Suigetsu says, interrupting Fio. "Besides, he's one of the last people I would want to be paired with."

"Yeah," Karin says in agreement. "I heard it took a whole platoon just to contain him during the invasion of the base. Of course, Sharingan Kakashi ended it in an instant once he arrived, but still...a rampage wouldn't be good for this village."

I'll have to ask Tsunade about this fellow later. He sounds lively.

"So I take it that this last member is merely a guest?" I say while turning to the other boy present. His skin is very pale, and he has an interesting sort of outfit...one that I recognize from Erika's description of it. A short grey jacket with black sleeves and red straps. The left sleeve for some reason is shorter than the right. He has black pants and the same coloured sandals. For some reason his entire midriff is exposed, and I wonder if that's a uniform requirement as well.

This one seems to be playing as an ikemen. The black hair and dark eyes remind me a lot of Sasuke, so I already feel bothered by him. And the tanto resting on his back doesn't help.

"Apparently he's here in some sort of supervisor role. Dunno what that means, but I'll have to talk to Lord Hokage about it," Fio says.

"See Erika about it first," I reply. "I have a feeling that dealing with this type will be especially troublesome." The boy's face is blank and emotionless. He's trying to figure me out before doing anything else. "And what might your name be, dear guest?"

"It's Sai. Quite nice to meet you, Captain Lilith Kobayashi."

Very unnatural, indeed. The spirit has been drained from him by way of some horrific method. The same as with the other members of ROOT. Sasuke would have ended up just like this. He still could, if we're not careful in the coming months and years.

"It's nice to meet you as well, Sai."

"So you're the one having illicit relations with the team leader, then."

"I beg your pardon?" I say, incredulous.

"Oi, Sai. Where the heck did that come from?" Fio says, frowning. "Lili and I aren't doing anything like that, and I never once said as much. That's not a funny joke."

Did this child lose his filter, too? What kind of training does ROOT put him through?

"My apologies. So you will be taking part in illicit activities with her in the future, then."

"This is why I don't want this weirdo around," Karin groans. "He's always saying stupid and off the wall things."

"Yeah, way to make a guest feel welcome, buddy," Suigetsu says.

"It may very well be an overreaction on your parts," Sai says in that almost mechanical tone of his. Though Erika does have a cool tone herself, they sound nothing alike. There's no sincerity or life when he speaks. It feels like everything inside of him has been hollowed out. "A viper of her sort wouldn't be worried about hurt feelings. After all, someone who gets off on murdering-"

"Sai."

Fio glares at him, looking like she's reached her limit.

"I think you've said enough. Tone it down, or leave."

"I apologize again. I merely assumed that Miss Kobayashi would enjoy unfiltered banter because of her nature. It seems that I have not read the mood properly."

"..."

"I ask your forgiveness," he says with a bow. "A woman of your prestige shouldn't be exposed to vulgar language in the first place."

I narrow my eyes. "Perhaps you should try being honest for once in your life."

He produces a phony smile. "Did Miss Asagao tell you of me?"

"Fuck yourself. I figured it out on my own, and I know that she wasn't made aware of your machinations."

"Machinations, huh," Fio mutters. "No wonder...it's not very nice, but it explains a lot."

"No idea what you guys are talking about," Suigetsu says.

"Keep yourself out of the loop, you don't want to be a part of this nonsense," I say to him. "The less you know, the better off you will be. That goes for you as well, Karin."

"Understood."

"There are little things that I'm aware of at the moment...believe me when I say that they will be taken care of soon."

"..." He's a bit difficult to read, but I can tell that he knows his cover has been blown. I'll leave him guessing at what I might do next. Erika can take care of the other end.

"I will leave you all to your training for now," I say as I put my sunglasses on again. "It was quite nice meeting you, and we will surely come together again as you spend more time within the village. Suigetsu, take care. And Karin, remember what I've said earlier."

Suigetsu gives a lazy salute. "Yeah. Take it easy, snake lady."

"Yes, I'll remember. Thank you...Lili." Karin blushes furiously at that.

"And have yourself a pleasant day as well...guest."

"..." Sai says nothing, his face already reverted to that blank slate.

"Fio, I will see you at home later."

"Yeah, for sure. Thanks for dropping by, Lili."

"As always, it is my pleasure." We share a long hug and I pat her head gently. "Be well."

I flip my hair back over my shoulder and start off.

"So you've decided to make your move, then...you who present yourself as the village's shadowy protector."

I wonder what exactly Danzo wants this time.

Itachi did give me warning of this type of scenario. But much in the way of time has passed since our meeting, and I have grown in many different ways. If there is a challenge at this juncture, I will have more than enough strength to meet it. As for that Sai fellow, he's as good as dead the moment he causes Fio trouble. But I should be careful, even if my mind is made up.

I will call Erika as soon as I make it home again. We're overdue for a proper lunch date, anyway.

Poll: Your Favourite Lili
Poll time because why not. Vote for your favourite form of Lili from the selected options above. Open for a limited time, but you can pick however many options you want. Just a side thing to allow participation from everyone reading, and to possibly get some audience insights. I'll probably have one or two updates moving in the meantime, but go nuts anyways.

I'll probably do other polls as the story progresses, if I remember at least.

"Perception"
[Days of Thunder: Chapter of Spiral Fox, Part 4]
---

The days are winding down towards my so called play date with Naruto. We've spoken a limited number of times compared to our usual schedule, since he wants to focus on getting ready for the upcoming event. I also imagine that Jiraiya is influencing him just a little. That much is fine. They can scheme all they want, the result will be the same.

And so, today is when I will meet with Erika to discuss recent events. We've gone over to the cafe run by Mai, one of Ibiki's contacts that I had the pleasure of meeting months ago. Traffic is subtly diverted from our place on the patio, and we've been served a tray of light and scrumptious sandwiches, paired with a flavourful tea.

"Before we begin, I must make a comment," I say. My sunglasses come off and are set on the side of the table, while I press a paper seal into the underside of it with my free hand.

"As you would."

"Hoh, we've certainly become spirited these past months. I quite enjoy it. But yes, you do look quite lovely today, Erika. A beauty in every sense of the word." Her outfit today is a violet shirt that bares her shoulders, and has long, billowing sleeves that come up to her fingertips. A slightly faded pair of shorts is paired with it, along with her favourite choker. And I am a bit jealous of how her dark skin looks in the sunlight. So pretty...

"Even as I expect them, your compliments are always wonderful to hear. Thank you, Lili," she says with a smile. "If I might return the sentiments, you always manage to look elegant and captivating, no matter what you wear."

"Much appreciated. After all, it does take some work to look this good all the time." Today's outfit on my side is simple enough. A sky blue silk shirt to ward off the heat a bit, and a pink skirt with artificial fur going along the bottom edge. It was from my early days in the village, and fit surprisingly well today. So it was an easy choice.

"Yes, that much is true."

"Thank you for helping me with these tasks, as I always must say to you. If there is anything that I can do to make it up to you, please do not hesitate."

"Moments like this are their own reward," she says. Sometimes this girl is entirely too precious. "Thank you in any case, Lili. Shall we eat first, or do you prefer we get our reports out of the way?"

"Eat, eat. I want you to have a taste of these sandwiches while they're still warm."

"Understood." Erika picks up one of the sandwiches and inspects it, then takes a good bite out of it. She looks pleased and nods. "This is very good."

"Enough to rival your favoured hamburgers?"

"Definitely. In fact, this seems like a perfect alternative. I have never had a sandwich this good before."

"I fell in love after my first time here," I say before taking a bite. "Mm, yes. Absolutely scrumptious. Of course, I can't stay away from my indulgences for too long. It helps that girls like us can burn it away on missions and during training."

"You shouldn't deliberately incite jealousy among the masses, you know."

"Aw. But it's a lot of fun!" I pout playfully. "Watching the other girls cower beneath my shadow is so entertaining..."

Erika smiles and shakes her head.

"Let's have another sandwich each and then get to business. They're still great after they've cooled off, but the warm and freshly toasted experience should not be missed." We do so and take a moment to drink some of our tea. At last, we settle in to begin.

"Do we have a preference as to where we should start?" Erika asks.

"Not at all. You have the floor, my love."

"Understood. Then I will start with the recorded movements of the mercenary group. They have been experiencing growth in several regions, most notably in Earth Country and the Hidden Rock Village, where profits have risen by over three hundred and fifty percent in the last two months alone. Contracts are popular, but sub-contracts are even more so, with rates that are generally much lower than that of the shinobi villages. It creates a strange scenario, where their monetary gains are notable, but a significant amount of funding is being left behind once we consider the costs of the services they provide. I can only imagine that the decentralized nature of the group is one of their boons. If they are an independent operation with the sole mission of making money, it seems they are succeeding. But with the details you gave me months earlier, and those gathered from our mutual contact, we know that this is not the case. Something else is coming."

It is lining up with Itachi's information, yes. If I want to know more, I will have to talk to him in person again. He wasn't exactly sparse with details the first time around, especially considering his position, but Erika is right. Something bigger is coming.

"Have you spoken to him recently?" I ask.

"Eighteen days ago was our last face to face meeting. Set up by Lord Hokage, and abbreviated as always. Though he has always seemed an amicable type of person. Was this your experience as well, Lili?"

I close my eyes. "It was a bit more...intimate than that. He placed the same faith in me that you have, and after hearing his story from the source for the first time...I admit that my heart started to melt quite a bit."

"I see."

"I really do like him, for a lot of reasons. He was dealt a terrible hand...even if he made those choices himself, and it's hard for most people to see reason in them."

"The kind of person who would sacrifice so much...for that result..." Erika sips her tea and takes a thoughtful pause. "It only makes sense that it would resonate with you. I have not been able to express as much, but there are those vibrations within me as well."

"Is that so?" I ask.

"Adverse reactions to seeing sacrifice in action...feeling the bitterness from sitting on the end of those results. What happens to those who risk for a future they will never taste? I think of these things each day."

"Hmm..."

"But...I digress. At this time, I have no other significant data on the group. There are some hypotheses that I have built up. However, to map them in a coherent and relatable fashion will require much more research. Our mutual contact and I have been using encrypted messages by bird for the majority of our communications. Within the group, no changes have been observed. The hunt for the tails has not started at this time...they are on schedule to have the initial run between three and four years from the present time, from earliest to latest times respectively."

"Three years...that should be enough time," I say before taking a sip of tea.

"There is a lingering feeling that I could have done more, even if you might not think so." She leans her head downwards. "So, I apologize for that."

"There is no need to worry about such things. Raise your head, my love. You have done splendid work."

"Thank you. Shall we move to the next item?"

"Please do."

"Fionne Asagao, or Fio as she prefers to be called. The leader of Team Thirteen, and your other half."

"Yes, that is correct. She made contact with you, I take it?"

"She did, on the same day as your meeting with the other members of the team. I have made strides to observe and correct the oversights made with regards to their extra member, called Sai. My investigations reveal that Sai is a code name. His true name was lost long ago."

"Hm..."

"He is indeed a member of the organization, which pledges fealty to Lord Shimura even as they report to Lord Hokage. Lord Shimura's influence on the village cannot be understated, as despite his termination and removal from Lord Hokage's cabinet, he holds considerable sway in village politics and other affairs. He has been attempting to monitor my movements and decipher my conversations with that man, but has had no success thus far. That place...also called the Foundation. They are very much my adversary as well. I would like them eliminated, and it must be so if we are to deliver our revolution to the shinobi world."

"Yes. Though patience is a virtue, especially in these times."

"That is true. As far as activities go, I have not found much else on Lord Shimura aside from his intention to insert himself into candidacy for the position of Fifth Hokage. The search has already begun in secret, but the duration of said search is very much variable at this point in time. From what Miss Tamaki has said, it may not be openly declared until after Lord Hokage's passing. Ah, apologies. We have diverted from the initial topic once more."

"It's no trouble. What came of your meeting with Fio?" I ask.

"I have provided small pieces of counter-intelligence technology and set up special monitors for each member of the current team. I have also spoken to Lord Hokage about securing a regular training area and meeting point, much like our teams have, to better facilitate said monitoring. This should go into effect on the coming Sunday, with Special Training Area 25 designated for use. Miss Tamaki consulted further with us, and said that unfortunately Sai is part of a package deal on behalf of the village, allowing Karin and Suigetsu freedom in exchange for supervision in a team setting. But he is also secretly gathering information without their consent and reporting it to that person in the Foundation among others, which is unacceptable. He is also making attempts to investigate Fio, and by extension, you."

"That only makes sense," I say with a sigh. "Thankfully everyone who needs to know about Fio knows about her already. She has nothing to hide. As for myself, I have certain things that I want to keep close at hand...but that seems like a solved problem, then."

"It should be, yes. We now have members of ANBU loyal to the cause doing surveillance and investigation of Sai and his master, safely, of course. And I did make a persuasive pitch, of sorts."

"Ah, so you have some loyal minions of your own."

"I wouldn't go that far. That said...I didn't expect to have anyone who liked me that much. Aside from our circle, of course," she says while placing her hands together.

"As I've said many times in the past, you are a lovely person, Erika. Perhaps a bit cool on the outside, but I have no doubts that the people who interact with you have a healthy respect for you. Your skill and professionalism is a relief to have, and your kindness shines through in most everything you do."

"Is that so...I see. I have had a low estimation of myself at times. Mother talks about it on the phone, and provides as much encouragement as she can. But meeting you, and Ino...I believe that has helped quite a bit. Perhaps one day I can become the confident person you all see."

"It will happen," I say. "Continue to believe in yourself, and everything will be fine. We will make it so."

"Yes."

"Thank you for taking care of Fio so quickly as well. She'll definitely feel more comfortable with these measures taken. Now, we had gone into another tangent earlier...about Lord Hokage, I believe?"

"We were speaking of the unpredictable length of his reign."

"Yes, yes. Considering how he keeps himself, and his desire to bring the world towards a peaceful era with his velvet glove, there is no telling when he might step down. A shrewd strategy, to be sure. Keeping everyone on their toes..."

"Indeed. My monitoring of his new charge as part of our contingency plan has revealed that he is slowly stabilizing."

"So that training is progressing nicely?"

"Yes. Although, there have been recent flares of aggression, according to Miss Imari. It seems that Naruto Uzumaki has been made aware of his personal training schedule."

"As I found out a few days prior, yes."

"So you spoke to him. Good."

"We had quite the conversation. Hina, Kakashi, and Fio were all present. Hina was worried about Naruto's recent behaviour, and from what I can gather Yuno was unaware because their gaming days were interrupted by extra training on Naruto's end. Something was amiss, I could tell that much. After chatting, I found out that the influence of the beast increased, by way of chakra level. It was making him more restless and aggressive. As for how he discovered the details of Sasuke's training...it was no accident."

Erika blinks. "It was leaked. But that level of information..."

"This was Jiraiya's doing."

"Lord Jiraiya revealed it to him? Something like that..." It's slight, but she has a perturbed expression on her face for a few moments. It fades away and she goes back to neutral, drumming her fingers on the table in thought. "I see now. That is supremely irresponsible. I will increase my surveillance of Sasuke for his well-being and make a suggestion to Miss Imari. She is providing assistance in parts of Sasuke's training."

"Won't that be too much work? I don't think you have to go that far," I point out.

"The increase shouldn't be too dramatic. If I find myself in a bind, there are operatives I can delegate to. Please do not worry."

I nod, relieved. "If you say that much, then I can believe it. Thank you."

"There were rumblings of conflict between you both. So it was for that reason, then."

"I chewed him out in public, yes. He tried to get wise with me, so I did what came naturally and put that old dog in his place. And I'll fucking do it again."

"There is only so much that one can let go of. As much as he should be respected for his service, there is a limit. I will have to keep an eye on him when it comes to these matters from now on." Erika sighs. "If anything amiss happens with Team Seven from here on, I will do my best to inform you. You have sacrificed too much, Lili."

I nod with satisfaction. "Well said."

So, the situation with Fio has been taken care of. I know where Akatsuki stands, for now, at least. We have a proper bearing on Sasuke and ROOT - that Sai fellow is being sent around to sniff out details and possibly incite chaos. He will have to be watched closely. That should be it for now.

"Ah, yes. Naruto and I are having a match in a few days. I don't believe Jiraiya will be there, though he may very well change his mind and make a surprise appearance. I've arranged for Kakashi to supervise."

"Hm. May I attend as well? There are observations that I would like to make."

"Yes, of course. Here are the details thus far. We have to decide on a location, but Kakashi says that he is looking into it." I hand Erika a small card, and she reads it before putting it into her pocket.

"Understood. Thank you, Lili."

"Not a problem, my love. Seeing as business is done, I wanted to ask about your family. You mentioned talking to your mother recently, yes?"

"I did. She is doing well for herself. A recent development is that she has acquired a well-paying job. It would normally be an unreasonably long journey to and from work, but Mother makes clever use of her gifts, and so the daily commute is trivial when combined with proper shortcuts. Frei is going to the Shinobi Academy in the Cloud. She wants to learn the shinobi arts, but is undecided as to whether she wants to make a long term career out of it. In any case, this is a very good sign. Her constitution is greatly improved."

"Is she thinking about coming here?"

"We talked about it. She doesn't want to leave Mother alone, so she is giving it a lot of thought. But I will be happy no matter what she chooses. The most important thing is that she is healthy and happy."

"Yes. That is what every older sister wants."

"On that matter, I have heard that you welcomed a new human into this world."

"Hmhm. I was waiting for you to ask about that." I smile and produce several photos. "My incredibly adorable little sister, Rose. Behold her splendour."

Erika takes the photos from my hands and looks at them. "Oh. She's very cute."

"Right? I can't get enough of her. I wish she were by my side right at this moment...but alas, it is not meant to be," I say with a dramatic sigh. "Feisty thing, though. Takes after me and Mama."

"I can see the resemblance. Have your elder sisters met her yet?"

"Yes, they have. She took to them right away, you know. It was very sweet to see. And of course Mama is doing her best as a first time mother. Very composed, even being woken up and having to breastfeed before the sun comes up at times."

"Mother had stories like that as well, when it came to myself and Frei." Erika starts to hand back the photos.

"No, no. Keep those! I have a few hundred copies as it is..."

"Ah...whatever for?"

"Just to hand out, of course. I think that Rose's pure radiance is a gift that should be shared with the world."

"I see. The bond between you is greater than I can comprehend."

I feign annoyance. "Oi. Don't get so cheeky all of a sudden."

She laughs softly and I bite into one of my sandwiches in the meantime.

[Days of Thunder: Chapter of Spiral Fox, Part 5]
---

"Ah."

I let out a breath before starting on my rounds again. Today is a simple work day: an entire morning taken up by doing patrols, for a wealthy set of clients. Nothing of note has taken place, and I have yet to interact with said clients as they presented the mission by proxy. It wasn't something specifically for me, but I suppose that I was the first one to take up the posting as it came in.

Nothing exciting or terribly fulfilling. Reading a book while sensing for any unusual figures, checking a few guests visually as they approached the main gates, and walking the perimeter as I am doing now. It's allowed some time to myself to think, which is nice. There are things that I want to get done today. After this, I think I will stop by and see the old man. He might have time to speak about my proposal for the village, and if not, a few small updates on things of interest will suffice.

"Thanks for filling in today. The bosses sent this down for you, miss."

A few of the regular guardsmen are now clocking in, wearing the usual black military gear. Hm. I suppose some people have money to throw away callously, don't they...

"Thank you." I take the envelope from the young man and place it into one of my jacket pockets. "Will that be all for me?"

"That should be all. Thank you again for your service," he says with a bow. I nod and bow back before leaving the premises. I jump towards the nearby branch and shake it, making a cloth backpack fall into my waiting arms. Bringing a change of clothing was a good idea, since I don't want to walk around like this all day if I don't have to. I find a nearby restaurant and borrow the bathroom to get out of my clothing, putting on the plain shirt and jeans I had stashed away. A few snacks are picked up to properly patronize the establishment, and I put them into my bag before slinging it over my shoulder and heading off. Next stop, the Hokage's Office.

"Morning, Lili."

"Good morning, Iruka. How are you faring lately?" I ask him as we cross paths.

"Pretty good, actually. This time of year is busy, but not too hectic considering everything. The groups of kids I have this year are above average, just not as good as your class if I had to say anything."

"That has its good and bad points, wouldn't you agree?"

"Less troublemakers for sure," he says with a laugh. "But not nearly as exciting. I can't complain, though. What about you?"

"I was just doing a little security work uptown. Filling in for a few guards. Nothing exciting, but it was very good pay for the amount of work."

"You don't say."

"They actually classed it as an A-Rank."

"Seriously?" Iruka shakes his head. "Guess it just shows you how far we've come, if people can throw around that sort of cash for a few hours of guard duty."

"I said the same to myself. Hopefully the good times can continue, with less inequality, of course."

"Heh. Are we planning a social revolution, too?" he asks with a smile.

I smile back and start to turn away. "It might be so, my dear. I'm off to see our Hokage. Take care, now."

"You too, Lili."

I wave over my shoulder and continue through the Academy complex. There's a different receptionist at the front entrance now, which means Imari is busy.

"Oh, Captain Kobayashi. Did you want to see Special Aide Hyuuga today?" the woman asks.

"I did. Is she in?"

"She and Chief Kurogane are in their office."

"Thank you. I'll go and speak to them directly."

"Understood."

I leave reception and head down the hall, then stop at the first open door before heading inside.

"..."

I have never seen this much paperwork in my life. All sorts of notes, scrolls both open and closed, documents of different weights, sizes, and colours...though almost all of it is neatly in place, the sheer volume of it seems enough to overwhelm any soul. Is this what they've been dealing with the past few weeks, while trying to take care of Sasuke and the Hokage?

Seeing all of this just makes me even more upset with Jiraiya. That inconsiderate bastard. But even so, I don't want to infect the ladies with my negative energy. They need to see a friendly face, after all.

"Yes. Yes, please get to that as soon as possible. We've been running into...ah, yes. I understand that, but it's been three days already. This is an important matter...you know what? Fine. The next person you'll hear from is my senior. No, I don't have time for it anymore. I apologize, but I have other business to get to. Chief Kurogane will be contacting you in the near future. Good morning."

I hear the phone being set down firmly, in a perfect balance of delicacy and frustration. Imari is at her desk, rubbing her temples before grabbing another set of documents to flip through. Her black hair has been hastily formed into a very messy bun shape, and the usually neat office attire she wears is full of wrinkles. She looks very exhausted.

"Imari?"

"I'm-oh. Lili, I'm so sorry! I was about to-"

"Please, don't stress yourself any further," I say to her. "You look dreadful, my darling. Have you not been resting well?"

"Not...really. It's been a rough few weeks, and the past few days have been even worse. I've actually been sleeping at my desk here...and as hard as I try, I end up behind with this work, so senpai helps out. She's so sweet to me, but I can't...I can't let her run herself ragged."

"I'm sure that she'll be fine. You're the one to worry about, it seems."

She laughs to herself quietly. "That's probably the case. We're...supposed to go out to lunch and take a nap right afterwards. It's an attempt to recharge...Lord Hokage gave us permission, and all. He's been insisting on stuff like this, actually. Believe it or not, today is a slower day than usual. The paperwork is finally getting down to reasonable levels."

"I can hardly believe it, so you're right about that," I say as I look around the room.

"The Hidden Cloud has launched several complaints and has gotten us stuck in a dispute with their naval units, claims of trade agreement violations, all kinds of..."

"Bullshit. That sounds accurate."

"Yes." Imari lets out a heavy sigh. "Came down like an avalanche. We're trying desperately to reduce the amount of impact it will have on village affairs and the Hokage's schedule. He needs to be clear for a lot of reasons, chief among them that land agreement with the Hidden Grass."

"Ah, the mission we were on recently."

"That's the one. We can't let the hard work you ladies put in go to waste. And then there's the big problem, which is Sasuke...ah, shit. Dammit."

I set down my bag and go to rub Imari's shoulders. She's incredibly tense...no wonder Tamaki tried to take away some of her workload.

"Sorry. I was so busy complaining that I forgot to ask why you were here. I'm sorry."

"You have nothing to apologize for, my dear. Nothing at all. Just relax, and try not to work yourself up any further. Here, I'll make you a little something to keep you going until your lunch break."

"You really don't have to."

"I know. But I'm going to do it anyways." I walk towards the nearby counter and change the filter on the coffee maker, then make a fresh, hot pot of coffee. From what I remember...yes, that should be how she likes it.

"Here you are."

She nods and gratefully takes the cup of coffee from me, then has a sip of it. "Thank you so much, Lili. That's...just how I like it. You're amazing."

"I do my best."

"Feeling slightly better...right, before I forget again like an idiot-"

"Imari," I say with a frown.

She sighs. "Sorry. I'm just...you know. Well, what can I do for you today?"

"I was here to see the Hokage for a little while, but I take it he's quite busy."

"He's not completely swamped...but there won't be too much time to talk about too many things right now. Like that proposal you sent the other day. Senpai and I read through it ourselves, I hope you don't mind."

"Not at all. The more trusted eyes on it, the better. What did you two think?" I ask, leaning against the desk.

"It's absolutely amazing. Especially considering your age and upbringing...really, the amount of detail and thoughtfulness that went into those plans, even if they're just a seed for what is to come, it's terribly impressive. I do would do anything to see it come to pass. Senpai said the same. I believe that Lord Hokage will give it the all clear once he properly goes through all of the details, but he liked it a lot himself."

"That's lovely to hear. I was hoping to get some support, but a full-throated endorsement from the three of you is a dream fulfilled. It seems that once I get my primary backers involved, we can proceed at full speed."

"Yes, surely. Let me find the schedule for today, and see what we can move around to fit you in..." She sets down the coffee and starts to rummage through some papers.

"Imari? Is everything okay?" a voice calls out.

"Everything's okay, senpai. We have a visitor today."

"Do we? Sounds nice." Tamaki comes into view, her outfit only slightly better looking than Imari's. Her long brown hair is braided and rests on her shoulder today. "Lili, how wonderful to see you! It's been a little while, hasn't it?"

"It has been. Lovely to see you as well, Tamaki." She wraps me in a warm hug, and I steal a chance to snuggle into her for a bit.

"You're really a sight for sore eyes, especially after what we've had to deal with..."

"So I've heard," I say as we separate. "Your junior here looks exhausted, and you're on the weary side yourself."

"Oh, that's barely the half of it. We've set up a little room to sleep properly in, provided we don't just pass out at our desks. The upper levels of the village are taking advantage of our presence, just kicking work upwards towards the Hokage because they figure he has help to take care of it. But this is a level of nonsense that even they weren't expecting. Gears are grinding all over the village, and we're still dealing with fallout from many other things. The Hidden Sound invasion, back channel negotiations with the Sand, collaborations with Grass, it's endless right now. In better days it would be manageable, but..."

"That really is too much."

"Normally there would be a few more people in here with us, but they're either burned out or taking care of work in other places. We'll be okay," Tamaki assures me.

"I hope you will be. Please make sure to rest properly once you get the time to."

"Promise. So I take it that you're not just here for a social call, though it's a lovely gesture to visit either way. Some time with the old man, then?"

"I was looking at what we could shuffle to get them some time together," Imari says as she produces a sheet of paper. Tamaki scans it with her green eyes before handing it back.

"There's one obvious thing that we can move. It's not urgent and doesn't need to go across his desk right away. That will clear up about thirty minutes at most...sorry that we can't get you more time, sweetie."

"That much is plenty of time for my purposes. You're both angels."

"Isn't she too much?" Tamaki says with a smile.

"Entirely too much," Imari says with her own smile.

"Let's get you settled in, Lili. Follow me."

We walk from the office and down the hall. Tamaki reaches the Hokage's door and throws it open without ceremony, waiting for the old man to raise his head from his paperwork. He removes the pipe from his mouth.

"I'm clearing out a half hour for you and Lili," Tamaki announces.

"Will that be alright?" Hiruzen asks. "Will it not interfere with your plans?"

"Not at all. We're going to move a few things out of the way and get the important items done first. The extraneous Cloud documents can be dealt with once and for all starting next week. We just want to get the main disputes out of the way. Now, Legal is still working on setting the stage. I don't have a time frame from them on that yet, and I have been leaning on them for quite a bit."

"Hm..."

"I told you already. You need to show your face for them to get the message. They're not taking me seriously, and I won't have them bullying Imari again."

"I'll consider making an appearance, Tamaki."

"Please do. One more thing before you two go ahead, Lord Hokage. You will need to talk to your student and get him back in line. Do not make me take matters into my own hands," Tamaki says firmly. "My personal discomfort is one thing, but pressuring Lili and unnerving my kouhai are different matters. Please keep that in mind the next time you speak to him. I will see you later."

"Yes..." Hiruzen scratches his head as Tamaki leaves. "It has been a rather stressful few weeks, for varying reasons. I heard about what Jiraiya did, both from outside sources and the man himself. Though...he seems to have caused even more trouble since then. Suffice it to say, I am not pleased with these developments. I apologize to you for that, Lili."

"You have done nothing wrong. What has not been resolved by now will be resolved soon enough. There is no need to fear, so try not to worry about these matters," I say gently.

"I will try not to. Thank you...please, have yourself a proper seat. As Tamaki has noted, our time is a bit limited today, an unfortunate thing. What did you wish to speak about, my child?"

I settle into my seat and cross my legs over. "The first item on the agenda is Sasuke's progress. How has he been in recent days?"

"Well. He has certainly been growing lately, though not yet fully recovered from his previous injuries. Though he is improving day after day. Imari has been helping with his exercises as well. He generally has been much calmer. Still a bit thorny of course, but that seems to be his nature," Hiruzen says with a chuckle. "Sakura has been supporting him the entire way through, and he has been speaking with Naruto from time to time. Up until recently, that is. I have noticed that he seems much more tense, because of stress. And he has become less willing to communicate with others."

"There is a root cause for that. It leads into my next item...Naruto has been rather aggressive lately," I say.

"Hm. That would explain the sudden tension. Does Jiraiya know about this?"

"Jiraiya was the cause of it. He was the one who informed Naruto of your arrangement with Sasuke."

"Of all the things," Hiruzen grumbles. "Now it makes sense...and I can figure out that your confrontation earlier was over the deleterious effects this information had on Naruto, and would potentially have on Sasuke."

"Yes. I know that it was reckless, and I did choose to drive the knife in further near the end, but I was incensed and he was truly irresponsible. More than that, there is something else. That heavy feeling of malice coming from Naruto's chakra, the influence of the tailed beast that he plays host to. I don't understand why it is like that all of a sudden. Did Jiraiya do something catastrophic and weaken the seal? It's astounding how much greater the pressure is compared to the performance at the exams..."

"There are intricacies with the seal and its arrangement," he answers. "The seal was designed in a specific way by the Fourth...that is to say, the Eight Trigrams sealing style. Two Four Symbols Seals, one above and the other below, with the special seal keeping the Nine Tails inside between them. It is called the Dead Demon Consuming Seal, an art that not even Orochimaru was aware of."

"This would be that jutsu that Ane-ue and Uncle Enma were reprimanding you about."

"Yes, exactly. To put it simply, it allows the user to seal away any living being's soul, or at least part of it."

"And the cost is one's life."

"Correct. From the mentions of how the technique works, the technique user has their soul used as a medium by the god of death themselves. Then both the user and the target, once the technique is completed, are swallowed up by the reaper. Their souls will be trapped forever, said to be in eternal conflict within the stomach of the death god, never to reach the afterlife."

"I'll scold you properly later on for thinking about using that technique in my presence, seeing as we are pressed for time today."

"Appreciated. Now, going back to Naruto's seal. Instead of a closed seal, there are gaps that allow the beast's chakra to slip out, mixing with Naruto's own reserves. From what Jiraiya and I can tell, it was intended to normalize the balance between the tailed beast and the host, making their chakras one eventually."

"But you're not entirely sure," I say.

"No. Minato did not get to pass on instructions about such a thing. Jiraiya would have more intimate knowledge, being Minato's mentor, but even he doesn't know the full extent of what was planned with Naruto. Now, with all of that in mind, there are methods of manipulating the seal further, weakening the overall bond and allowing more chakra to flow from the Nine Tails and into Naruto. Needless to say, it would have a profound effect on him, and if done improperly the seal could be flung open completely, allowing Naruto to be consumed completely by the fox's malice."

"He's adjusting to the influx of power. Or trying to, at the least."

"Yes. But that alone would not account for his aggressive nature. Jiraiya must have used that information on Sasuke's training as an extra tool."

"That's correct. It was done in order to motivate Naruto further, possibly to establish faster control of his new strength. But it has not worked as planned...all it has done is make him upset, and obsessed with training and strength. I have taken steps to resolve matters."

"Oh? How so?"

"I have arranged a match between us...it will be a delicate operation, amusingly enough, but necessary. Letting this tension between him and Sasuke grow will not be good for either of them. Sasuke really seems to be turning the corner, and despite my utter loathing of him...I do want to see him well again. If not purely for my sake, then for that of the many other who care about him so."

"I see," Hiruzen says with a smile. "As always, you are truly remarkable, Lili."

"I would not call it such myself, but your praise is always appreciated, my lord. In any case, you can leave the truly heavy lifting to me. I will help my beloved friend, and you will focus on rehabilitating Sasuke properly. This conflict will be overcome."

"Of course. Good luck to you, Lili."

"Thank you. And the same to you, Lord Hokage."

"Did you have other items?" he asks while relighting his pipe.

"The movements of Akatsuki at current. Do you have much information on that?"

"Jiraiya has been investigating on his own, but nothing else of note has been found. He has uncovered the extent of their network, and it is indeed more robust and layered than we anticipated. And of course, your rapport with Itachi has unlocked new avenues, allowing us to steadily track their more subtle movements as they make them. Have you met with Erika lately?"

"We had tea and sandwiches together, yes. She has been meeting with our Itachi semi-regularly."

"Yes. Akatsuki has yet to move, but when they do...I suspect it will be quite a mess to deal with. We are holding onto the information for now, but will have it ready when the time comes."

"Has Itachi mentioned any important benefactors? Aside from my father, of course. I know that Orochimaru was also part of the group at one point in time."

"None so far out of the ordinary."

"I see." So he's keeping that card close to his chest. Mentioning Madara might cause more trouble than it's worth at this point in time. It makes a bit of sense. More than that, if we are collaborating, it means an opportunity to confirm if it truly is that man, and what type of dark arts he must have used to either stay alive or rise from the dead. "Well, we have plenty of time. And as much as I am loathe to say it, Jiraiya's guidance is necessary at this moment so that Naruto can properly defend himself from aggression. At least until I finish my studies on sealing arts."

Hiruzen chuckles at that.

"We're in a holding pattern as far as Akatsuki is concerned. Not terribly problematic. Itachi will likely send a message soon. And for the last item, I would like to know how my lovely Fio is doing."

"Remarkably well. I have been busy enough that I couldn't spare much time to see her in action, but reports from her peers are all very positive. Quite talented, with an infectious sort of energy. A very kind child as well. I do look forward to seeing her serve the village well into the future."

"That is wonderful to hear," I say with a big smile. "Thank you for taking a chance on her, my lord. She's grateful for it, and so am I. It's a wonderful gift that you've given us."

"This was among the least of things I could do for you, my child. The village owes much to you already, and yet you ask for little in return. It is my pleasure to be here as a witness."

"Greater things are soon to come, which should please you further. It seems we have covered the desired items, and our time together is coming to a close either way," I say as I rise from my seat. "We will have to meet again for more detailed discussion...ah, yes. That Sai fellow is being monitored now. I see that he is doing work on behalf of certain elements of the village."

"That is true, yes."

"Mm. I'll erase him the moment he steps out of line. Any objections?"

"A rather harsh question to ask, isn't it?"

"But a simple one."

Hiruzen leans back in his chair, smoke floating upwards from his pipe. "Unauthorized actions on behalf of Danzo are not within my jurisdiction, just as he desires. Therefore, you and your associates may act at your own discretion. Any involvement by the ANBU and Military Police will be adjusted accordingly."

"A fine answer."

"Mm. You do have a talent for bullying others, Lili."

I give him a wink before starting off. "Have yourself a peaceful afternoon, oyaji."

"Of course. Take care, my child."

I grab my bag from the office and give Tamaki and Imari proper farewells. Then it's back into the village and its summer heat.

"Everyone is busy lately...I suppose it's a sign of the times."

Many things to do...but we will get through them, one day at a time. And at the end of it all, a better world will be waiting. But it is also as I said before – we must also focus on what is in front of us first.

I wonder just how much you've grown, Naruto.

Interesting results. Onee-san Mode is a favourite, while bullying is now banned. rip in peace. S a d i s m is in the middle of the pack, with mercy mode above it and the runner up, smug. I appreciate how cultured my readers are.

Thanks again for participating. There will be more polls in the future, probably. Look out for them as we approach more milestones. And another thank you for reading and keeping up to this point. I hope you enjoy what's to come.

e: it'll be the same poll because I thought polls worked differently. They don't, I have no clue what I was thinking. The same options plus some others will be added for flavour and it'll be open for like a month instead of a week. We'll see if readers have the same sentiments the further we get into the story.

PSA: housekeeping + content warnings
This is a non story post. It is a public service announcement.

The story is now very long and will get longer still. As always I thank everyone reading and who has contributed in the past, it has made things a lot of fun and helped me to keep going. I'm having fun writing, but it wouldn't be the same without you. And more to the point, I'm not purely writing for myself. This is why I want to make the following announcement, along some lines I have set down before.

500,000+ words of content is a lot to go through at once, which is why I flip back through the writing from time to time. Aside from typos and the like, I try to look at the content I have produced from an outside perspective. But that doesn't mean I will get it right all the time. So if anyone sees unlabeled content that might be problematic or brings up painful emotions and memories - even if it is just what you feel - then please let me know so that I can add the appropriate content warnings and/or edit if necessary. The story swings between light-hearted and heavy things at times, and I want to do right by the readers. That's all of you. Artistic freedom has its limits, even within the site rules.

There is a general disclaimer at the end of chapter 1, but it hasn't covered everything which is why I add the content warnings in the first place. Sufficient Velocity is a place of refuge for a lot of people, and one of the last things I want to do is make someone feel unwelcome or excluded because of a piece of fiction I created (though bigots can get fucked, obviously). Because I'm not perfect, a little help keeping this place a welcoming one is appreciated, even if this isn't the biggest or greatest story.

But if you have no objections or issues, remain as you are and enjoy the ride. There is no pressure to comment or react (gib ratings tho) and I can note patronage in the various counts.

That's the end of the announcement. Thanks yet again for reading.

Silver Bullet
Scarlet Justice - ep. 128
"Silver Bullet"
[Days of Thunder: Chapter of Spiral Fox, Part 6]
---

Today is the day of my match with Naruto.

I intend to take him as seriously as possible, and so I go with the standard Leaf outfit, complete with slightly peaked cap. In the same way I displayed myself to Hina, I want to show him proper respect and start off on the right note.

"Morning, Lili."

"Good morning, my love."

Fio and I have breakfast together before taking some time to review our daily notes individually. My mind drifts in the meantime, thinking of my friend.

It's come to this, and I worry about him a little bit. I don't think anything terrible will happen, but there's always a chance for it when it comes to physical combat. Will everything go back to the way it was? It will be a difficult fight in some ways, certainly violent because of how he is. He won't stop or give in, even if it looks like he's defeated. That much I saw in his fight with Neji so long ago. I have to hold back a little, but how much? How much power does he have, really? Should I consider what Jiraiya said the other day, with his mention of getting scars just trying to restrain Naruto?

"Everything okay, Lili?"

Fio's voice snaps me out of my thoughts. "Everything is fine, Fio."

"Thinking about the fight with Naruto?"

"Yes."

"I think it'll be okay. Would have liked to come along, but we've got important material to review today and Auntie Tsuna wants to do some extra tests with me and Karin. Sakura is usually there, too."

"How is she?"

"Ah, on the quiet side as usual. But she's wicked good at just about everything, you know? I used to get jumpy when it came to getting needles, but she makes it so that you can barely feel it. Really cool."

"So she's growing. That much is good to hear...it means that she'll be able to properly take care of Sasuke, and pay all of us back for her betrayal."

"Ooh, yeah. Almost forgot about the betrayal part. Shame, she's so gentle."

"Indeed."

"Well, if it's okay, I'll go on ahead again."

"Of course, love. I'll take care of our plates. Have a good day."

"You too, hon. Good luck..." She kisses me gently on the cheek before grabbing her bag and leaving. I set down my papers and sigh, then take a sip of my cooling tea.

"Almost time..."

I meditate for a few more minutes before finishing my tea, then getting up and washing out all of the plates and cutlery. I grab a cool bottle of milk from the fridge, make sure I have all the equipment that I need, and then double check all of the entrances and exits before locking up and leaving.

It's a warm morning today. The initial meeting place is at Ichiraku Ramen, and I arrive first. Teuchi and Ayame greet me as they get ready to start their day, with Ayame making me some hot tea which I gratefully drink up. A few minutes later, Naruto arrives with Kakashi trailing behind him.

"Looks like you're both ready to do this," Kakashi says. "We agreed on the exam arena, any changes since then?"

"None," I reply. "Naruto?"

"Nope, should be good."

"Sentimental value?" I ask him.

"Mm...maybe."

"I see. Well, that much is fine with me."

"And we haven't added any extra spectators?" Kakashi asks.

"Not that I know of. I take it that Naruto's mentor will not be attending?"

"Eh..." Kakashi shrugs. "Lord Jiraiya was just a bit cryptic about his intentions."

"As usual." I shake my head. "Whatever. As long as he doesn't meddle, I don't care how far up the stands he sits."

"Heh. Well, if you need anything else or have other suggestions, I'm all ears. I'll be keeping an eye on you both as much as possible. I won't interfere unless something serious happens."

"I appreciate that, Kakashi. I know that I can trust you to let things play out properly."

"Thank you for that."

"You're quite welcome."

"The area is pretty well secured, and of course the Hokage knows all of the relevant details. It would be nice if you guys didn't do too much damage, but things happen sometimes. Dirt and concrete can be repaired and replaced...just do what you have to, and worry about yourselves first and foremost."

"Understood. Shall we go?" I say.

"Yeah. Follow me, everyone else should be waiting."

The three of us head towards the arena, through the main doors and towards the interior. It has been quite a while since I've seen this place. The dusty terrain and high walls bring back many, many memories. I fought Gaara here, spilling his blood for the very first time, and displaying my violent, sadistic side to the world. Naruto fought Neji, proving that destiny was not some inescapable set of chains, and that people could change from what they once were to become brilliant. He showed his resilience and courage, and even if it didn't get him a promotion, it endeared him to the people of the village. And it was here that the fight to defend my new home began. I took on Orochimaru with Midori, Luna, the Hokage, Enma, and Shikamaru. A monumental fight that I feel in my heart changed the flow of history...for what could have happened if Hiruzen Sarutobi was lost that day? What could have changed had we not stopped Orochimaru? So many possibilities. But I believe that we fought to get on the right path in the end. Now all we have to do is endure and continue to fight forward, towards a bright and beautiful future.

This place...is filled with so many memories. More than I realized at first.

"Did you want to take a few more minutes?"

I look at Kakashi and shake my head. "I'm ready now."

"Naruto?"

"Yeah, same. Let's go ahead and do this."

"Got it. Be safe, you two."

Kakashi moves up to the lower part of the spectator section, pulling out his orange book to read. More people join him in short order. Erika, who expressed her desire to watch over us. Sakura, who is on standby in case medical attention is immediately necessary. And Hina, who has brought Hanabi along as emotional support. She wants to see this through, in her own way.

"Whenever you're ready," I say to Naruto. My hands are at my sides, and I stand squarely facing him. He sets his feet in the dirt, head pointed downwards to focus as he settles in. We are currently in the middle of the arena.

He lifts his head after a while, and ties his headband tight before looking at me. "There's something I wanted to ask."

"What is it?"

"I...maybe it'll sound bad."

"It might. But you can talk to me about it. Remember?"

"Yeah. I wanted to know if you were just...taking pity on me. With all of this stuff. Being a jinchuuriki, kinda struggling...I know better, but...I dunno."

"Your thoughts are probably a mess right now," I say gently.

"Something like that, yeah. Been a weird time."

"I understand. You know, watching you overcome everything in your life just made me love you even more. You remember the promise I made to you, yes?"

"That I would always be Naruto to you."

"Yes, exactly. All of it was out of love. It's a valid question, however. You know how I am. I spoil you at times, and smother you a little. I try to protect you from yourself. Perhaps it comes off as patronizing."

"Patronizing? Is that bad? I don't know what that word means, honestly."

"Oh, it means that I'm acting superior to you. Like...mm, treating you like a small child. You know how adults will pet their little ones' heads and give them candies, shove them off into corners to play with others, and keep them out of business because they don't know better...things like that."

"Really...huh. I guess you seemed a little bossy at times and junk, but I never got the feeling you were treating me like a dumb kid. I always got the feeling that you cared, more than anyone else. Maybe you were doing stuff weird because you're rich, and Pervy Sage said that rich people don't know how to act like humans sometimes-"

"He would say that."

"Haha, yeah. But I never got that vibe from you, Lili. And even then, you do the same things you do now. You always take time out to explain things to me. You always slow down when it looks like I'm confused, and you believe in what I can do. You've always treated me like a person, just one that you give a lot of hugs," he says with a smile. "And I really appreciate that, you know. You've always been there for me."

"I always will be."

"Yeah." He lets out a breath before getting serious. "Okay. I'm not gonna hold anything back, so get ready."

"I figured as much. I don't know what exactly you and your master have been up to, but I will put an end to this nonsense regardless. If you fear nothing, then attack with all your might, my friend. I will show you my terror in return."

"Got it. Let's go!" Immediately, he makes the Tiger seal and ten extra copies of himself appear in burst of smoke. The first four start off towards me, but I can already tell that they're meant as a distraction. Chakra starts to gather in Naruto's left hand as he stands still, being shaped by another copy as whirls around violently. A pure, shining sphere.

"Here we are...Rasengan," I mutter.

The fox-like features on Naruto's face are becoming pronounced. All of the pent up anger and frustration is flowing out, to the point where I can feel it in the air. We're starting.

I walk forward and weave past the Shadow Clones coming for me, dispatching them with one quick strike each. The remaining six along with the real Naruto are already coming my way.

"Nothing fancy, now."

Another step forward before I accelerate, tearing through the remaining clones as Naruto rises into the air. He comes down with his arm outstretched, and I skip to one side as he slams into the earth, leaving a sizable crater behind with his jutsu. An impressive technique, to be sure. He's done well for himself...

"Just warming up! Come on!"

He makes a few dozen more clones and they all move forward.

"Don't hold back, now," I say to him. "Weapons free."

"Make sure you don't regret it!"

"Hmph. Cocky little thing, aren't you...try leaving a mark on me before you start spouting nonsense. Right now, you're just a cute little whelp who's far out of his league."

The clones start their movements, some drawing kunai and others pulling out shuriken. I push chakra into my feet and start moving quickly, swinging into range of a few clones before spinning and dispatching several of them with a kick. A shuriken flies past my head as I tilt it, and I twist to avoid a kunai as it hits the ground beside me. The weapons are flying in, seemingly at random, but with enough space that I can comfortably weave through them. I can't imagine it would be this easy for most others, though.

"Time to move a bit faster. I really don't want to get hit so early."

I activate the first level of my chakra mode and pluck a kunai out of the air, using it to deflect several other weapons in front of me. With a flick of my wrist, I toss it through a clone before dodging a wave of shuriken, swiping a deflected one from the space nearby and using it to slice through a nearby clone. I slide and toss it ahead to dispatch another clone, then start on a run towards more enemies as I catch them off guard. Naruto is charging up yet another Rasengan in the background. I quickly steal a kunai from one clone before kicking it into several others, then charge my new weapon with lightning and use it to dash through several more clones as I dash back and forth at speed. The numbers are quickly thinning, and I can only wonder how many clones I will have to deal with next.

"Take this!"

I can already see him coming and sidestep his Rasengan, then sweep him off his feet and bring my foot down roughly on his right arm. The technique disappears as he loses control of it. Interesting...so the level of concentration needs to be high as well.

"I think you'll have to do a bit better than that," I say to him.

He smirks in response. "Glad you think so. I had something special just for this fight...so make sure you appreciate my hard work!"

"Oh?" From the corner of my eye, I can see a bunch of the discarded weapons transforming into copies of Naruto. Clever trick, but there's more to it, isn't there? Naruto gets himself free, and I jump away from him, the clones closing in while making seals with their hands.

"Secret Art!"

Let's see what he has planned...

"Super Planetary Harem Technique!"

...ah, right. I was expecting this. Not so early, mind you...but I was expecting this very thing to happen at least once. Hoping for it, being honest. I know it's a distraction, but I think I'm allowed to live a little.

"You've learned quite a bit, my friend. Well done."

At least a dozen women surround me, with pure smiles and lovely bodies to behold. All sorts of flavours to choose from, too. From rich, dark skin to pale and practically glowing, straight hair to soft and fluffy, chests large and small, and even a cat girl or two for my amusement. What a wonderful sight. I could get lost in this forever...

"..."

Alas, all good things must come to an end. Such a shame. But this distraction was very welcome, and delicious. With my gentle tutelage and some self-study, Naruto has risen into the ranks of the artists. This is among the many reasons I am proud to call him my friend.

And now, to beat him into the dirt.

"A gift for a gift...here's one of my new tricks. Mobius Type 6: Artemis Umbrella."

A spherical field of lightning bursts forth from my body, destroying my temporary harem and blowing Naruto backwards as he charges in with yet another Rasengan. He tumbles a few times before recovering, cursing to himself. The new technique worked quite well; a balance between pure force to stop and reflect attacks of all kinds, and a brief duration so that I can quickly take other actions immediately afterwards. It may be possible to generate a continuous electrical field in the future, but as of now, the upkeep is too high...far better to use the chakra mode as a means of blunting damage while on the move.

"Another new move, huh...dammit. Guess I'll have to go for broke."

Naruto wipes dirt from his cheek and stands in place, gathering chakra. It's heavy and tinged with anger...this is the Nine-Tails' chakra, then. He's gotten much better at harnessing it. As long as he keeps himself in control, it should be fine.

"Make sure you're going to go all out if you're using up that chakra, boy."

"Don't underestimate me!"

"Wouldn't dream of it. I'll have you try this as a starter." I quickly weave handseals and Naruto reacts with some sort of realization. But there's no way he would know...

"Shadow Clone!"

"Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet."

I watch as the clones form a barrier and block the dragon, slowing it to the point where it can do no damage as they pop one after the other. Naruto races around the edge of the clone wall and towards me, his speed boosted by the fox's chakra. Did...he counter me on reflex?

"No...wait. It's possible that on a mission..." Zabuza Momochi, perhaps? Or it was Kakashi using a copied art. Either way, his memory is good to remember something from that time and recognize it as a threat. He's something, alright. But I'm something else entirely.

I weave more seals and push my left palm towards him.

"Water Shark Bullet."

"Gah!"

He barely jumps out of the way of the attack, tumbling once as he hits the ground before continuing to run.

"What's the matter? You said not to hold back, so-"

"Oi. Don't taunt me, Blondie. The moment I start using that art, you're going straight to the hospital. Be thankful I'm giving you the chance to even touch me," I say.

"You've got a big mouth, Lili...I'm gonna close it up for you!"

"Come and try it, brat."

"I'm just a bit...faster than before! I've got this! Shadow Clone Jutsu!"

Another massive wave of clones...two hundred? Five? No, it's well over a thousand. I can't immediately count all of them.

"And now, you can eat those words! Your fancy new jutsu won't stop all of this!"

The clones all spread out and surround me, then draw several shuriken each. This is a much scarier redo of the barrage from earlier, and with so many more clones, the attacks will be even harder to dodge. But if there's a pattern he follows, then I can see an easy opening...because he's trying to bait Type 6 again.

"Here it comes! Naruto's Shinobi Handbook: All Directions Shuriken!"

Attack boldly, then leave a small opening at the top that I would notice. Once I hit that opening, the clones trailing behind in the air would seal my escape, pulling me downwards towards the fury of two thousand fists. If I stay on the ground, my only real option is to use the force field again in an attempt to defend against those attacks. But that will leave me distracted as well, and allow him to use his own set physical attacks. I don't have any other jutsu that will cover such a wide area. It's a really good move he's made.

I can beat it easily enough. I'm that good. But it's time to show off a little more, and put some real fear into him and everyone else. The shuriken are drawn and thrown, thousands of them racing towards me. Time to end this.

"Lightning Release Chakra Mode, Third Stage. Overdrive: Trans-Am System!"

The bright orange shroud of chakra surrounds my body. For this brief period, I can do anything I put my mind to, without worrying about vulnerability later. I draw three kunai, placing two in my hands and one in between my teeth. Here we go!

"There's no way...!"

Naruto's throwing speed is slightly faster with his increase in chakra, but not fast enough to give me trouble in this form. I charge headlong into the nearest section of shuriken and start deflecting them at every angle that I can. My body twists and turns, briefly stopping in safe areas before I continue on. I move my head up and down to redirect anything that comes too close to my face, lightning crackling as my arms systematically sweep through waves of weapons to send them flying into each other and through clones. Loud pops sound out as tools find new, unintended targets; I drown out the yells and yelps from the many Narutos while I slice through to the edge of their circle. There are still bodies coming down from the sky after firing their certain-kill attack, floating in my altered perception.

I'm feeling cute right now. Let's add a little more spice to this before I put it to bed.

I run towards the nearest clone and plant my foot on his head before kicking off into the air, flipping and turning to slash through another clone as I pass by. Before I can start to fall, I push water beneath my feet and jump again, my feet slamming into another clone before I go into a spin and slash through two more. I twirl and throw all three of my kunai in sequence, wiping out clones nearby before letting myself fall towards the ground. The many Narutos are attempting to regroup and properly rush me, but I won't need much to take them out. More clones means more chakra stretched out, and that means that their composition should be flimsier. I push chakra into my feet and start flickering back and forth at speed, jabbing my lightning coated fingers into clones and popping them rapidly. The massive number from before has easily dwindled past half thanks to my efforts, but I still want to find the real Naruto quickly - the interesting peculiarity about the Shadow Clone technique is that it replicates every part of the user, including their chakra system. That means that even users of doujutsu can't tell the difference between the clones and the original, and if they can't, then comparatively less esoteric sensing techniques such as mine won't do any better.

If I know him, he's winding up a big move. I want to find him before-

"Aaah!"

"Seriously?" I yell as the clones disperse. Naruto reels as I jab my finger into his head, electricity flowing into his body and paralyzing him.

"Dammit! I knew you were fast, but this is crazy!" He growls and shakily forces himself to his feet as we stand at length again.

"What the hell did you think would happen if you hid yourself in a crowd like that? I can't tell you apart from the other idiots that look just like you."

"Shut up, seriously..." He winces and tries to move his arms.

"No, you shut up. And you were spouting nonsense about how I should use Mobius, goddamn meathead."

"When I said I was gonna shut you up, I really meant it. Come on...we're going again!"

I roll my eyes. "Save it. You can barely move and that lightning chakra is going to hamper you for a while yet. You're done."

"No way in hell! No way I'm gonna...give up like this! Seriously!" he yells.

"Naruto..." I feel something happening. "Naruto, hold on. Take it easy, okay?" This...sensation. He's getting worked up, and all of this pressure is...

"This isn't the time, you know? I can't slow down! You said you were taking me seriously, right?!"

"I am, and that's why I need you to calm down-"

"Don't treat me like I'm a kid! Don't look down on me, Lilith!"

"Naruto...?"

"I...I can't...ugh...what..." He clutches at his head, red chakra flowing from his body. This is bad. This is very bad.

"Naruto!"

"Lili...it's so much...too much..."

"Kakashi!" I yell towards the stands. "Get Jiraiya here, quickly! He's the only one who knows how to put an end to this! All of you, spread out and find him!"

"Leaving you alone is-"

"Please, don't worry about me! This is dangerous-"

"Lili! Watch out!"

"Ah...?" Naruto has crossed the gap between us in an instant. This sort of speed...his arm is wrapped around my wrist, and I immediately back away, feeling my flesh burn from where he touched me.

"My...my hand. Shit..." I turn to Kakashi, who is frozen in shock. "You have to go...I don't think he's going to turn back on his own. I promise you, I'll be okay..."

"Alright. I'll be back soon, just hold on until we get Lord Jiraiya! Everyone, follow me!"

I hear him take off with the others. Now it's just Naruto and I, alone.

Everything...I did what I could to be careful. Something that I didn't understand...winding him up, having that sort of banter...was that the cause? Was this my fault? I don't know any more, and I don't really care. All that matters is taking care of the problem in front of me. The cloak of chakra has solidified, a protective structure that has taken the shape of a fox, with long ears at the top and a sweeping tail behind. The chakra itself looks like it's boiling...and more than feels like it, if my encounter was any indication. I can smell the burning of flesh other than my own...that chakra is damaging Naruto, too. What a terrifying transformation, what a thing to deal with.

"The beast feeds off of negative emotions...anger, hatred, fear. Pain and anxiety of all kinds. The suffering inside of one's soul. Tempting you to take up its power...isn't that it?" I ask. The pain in my right wrist is still present, but I can easily fight through it. I quickly wrap bandage around the wound and tie it off, keeping my attention on Naruto as he drops to all fours. The amount and potency of the fox's chakra continues to increase. I have to stop this quickly, because even if Naruto isn't consumed by the darkness inside, his body will be ruined beyond repair if this carries on for too long.

"Forcing my hand? That's just like you, fucking brat. Trying desperately to get your way. I see that a little spar won't be enough to set you straight...you won't be satisfied with that much. You and that damned fox."

"I...can't..." He shakes his head rapidly. "Just need...more power..."

"I know. But I'm upset with you all the same." He's barely keeping himself afloat in there, but at least he's talking to me. I should be able to handle this. Aside from the pure malice of that chakra, the level I can sense is...I see. That was about Sasuke's level in his second curse mark state, wasn't it? And I only needed that heavenly power to crush him before he hurt my comrades. Otherwise, I don't need that much...

I want to bleed off more of this anger he has. There is a pain inside of him.

"You have regrets, don't you."

"Re...gret." He growls in frustration. "Never...strong enough. Sasuke...friend. Power...save. Hunting. Akatsuki...want to protect everyone. Lili..."

"Yes, I see. All of that buried deep inside of you. It's okay to be angry," I assure him. "But you have a dangerous entity inside of you, and Jiraiya has opened the gates of power too wide for you to handle. As a result, the beast inside of you has taken those frustrations and used them to spin you right into a frenzy. You are not wrong, Naruto. You are not at fault. But this situation is a harrowing one, isn't it." I sigh. "I was cursed and broken, too. You remember?"

"Hurt...crying. I...remember...ugh..."

His control is slipping again.

"Yes. Naruto...I will show you my darkness. And I will use it to crush yours." I flare up the chakra mode to its second stage. "This is the strength I started with when I fought Sasuke. It was enough to force him onto his back foot. I crushed him with an even greater power, but that will come later. For now, you will bear witness to my frigid, ruthless focus. Void Heart, online."

I completely tune out the world around me, and sink freely into that unshakable state. Naruto responds by rising to his feet again, holding his right hand out to one side. The red chakra around it rotates, gathering speed, changing form, until it turns into a glowing red sphere. It starts to rotate on its own, seemingly...but analysis shows that it is being rotated by the chakra shroud, which operates autonomously. The power is increasing with each passing second.

"Words will not be enough. This has become clear," I say tonelessly. "My desire is for you to properly calm down. Thus, we will fight. Come, Naruto. I will deliver terror to you, and to the beast you house."

He growls audibly before moving towards me, employing a tactic of moving in a zig-zag pattern to confuse my senses. Dust rises from his movements, which I can track fairly easily as I am. The Rasengan comes for my chest, and I effortlessly move to one side in order to dodge it. The sensation of the new chakra is disturbing at best...quite a dangerous thing, especially in the wrong hands. Given my previous encounter minutes prior, I have decided that I will take measures to avoid coming in contact with that chakra again. The chakra mode may not provide enough protection at this level for hand to hand combat.

Naruto slides to a stop before turning around quickly. His arm thrusts forward, and I immediately calculate what he will do. The autonomous, freely moving nature of the chakra shroud was a tell. I see the chakra extend itself into a long, stretching limb that weaves back and forth with the sphere in hand, attempting to catch me off guard. Strange movements that might give users of the visual arts pause. I step past the extending arm as it comes closer.

"Epyon."

With a quick movement, I sever it. The chakra dissipates and causes the Rasengan to explode behind me. Naruto attempts to use the event to mask his next movement, leaping towards me and creating a large claw of chakra to attack with. I anticipate his initial movement, then move backwards as the chakra extends on its own to swipe at me, raking the ground as it misses. I see his body rotate for a spin, and I rise into the air as his tail whips through the air towards me. He launches another attack; I activate Epyon in response and slice away the incoming hand in two passes. As I hit the earth, I surge forward and launch Aegis, using the pulse at close range to launch him into the air. He recovers quickly and spins before landing on his hands and feet some distance away.

"..."

The influence of the Nine Tails' chakra is increasing. I can sense Naruto's power rising, and another tail is forming at his back. Far from ideal.

"Grrr..."

He is no longer in control, it seems. Jiraiya has not been found since the others have yet to return. The number of tails is not a problem at present, but with the door to power wrenched open, my actions will soon have to become drastic if I am to survive.

Naruto roars and the earth shakes, with wind violently rushing past me. My feet slide backwards slightly. He has already left his former position in a flash, and I can feel the surge of energy from the Rasengan behind me. My body turns while I charge Mobius, and within a second I fire at the sphere of energy, making it rupture and explode in a wave of red chakra. Naruto emerges from the smoke and accelerates towards me once more.

Parameters have changed. I will shift to more damaging methods. It must be so, even if I am loathe to hurt my precious friend.

"Starting routines." I ready chakra in my hands before moving forward to meet him. He throws a heavy punch that I elect to slip underneath with a body flicker, ending up at his exposed back. My body turns swiftly.

"Mobius: Twin Barrel."

A full power Mobius burst from both hands, simultaneously. The shots puncture the chakra shroud and accurately tear through his arm and leg on opposite sides. He staggers and attempts to turn, so I fire through his other leg, making him lose balance and fall to the ground.

"I suspect that will not be enough."

I cycle through my memories, attempting to find any hindrances to my current set of actions.

"..."

I see. I was careless.

The corrosion was an issue, but for the reasons that the damage caused by the chakra outpaced the natural healing factor that Naruto had gained from his status as a host. The day we sparred for the first time was what made me aware of a mysterious power inside of Naruto, because of the fact that he healed so quickly after our match. That healing factor should be active, and I know that the fox will exploit it to keep Naruto fighting.

As I suspect, this is the case. The only visible signs of my attacks remaining are the holes in Naruto's clothing. His recovery is swift, and so he resumes his charge. But there is another concerning development: his tactics are becoming non-existent. I merely have to step back and forth as he attacks, trying to use the flowing chakra to gain an advantage with surprise attacks. But because of his linear movement, it is easier and easier to anticipate them before they arrive. He is not using clone arts, and has stopped using the Rasengan.

Has the beast taken over completely? I do not want it to be so.

"Naruto. Please respond if you can hear me..."

I receive a loud, defiant roar in response. The chakra continues to build. It is becoming thicker and darker around Naruto's form, and the feral features more pronounced. He no longer speaks, and shudders in pain as the corrosive chakra eats into him continually.

I cannot let him form the third tail. He will sink too far into the darkness.

"..."

It must end here.

"A precise blow is required to stifle the incoming madness. We will begin, then." I focus my chakra to its limit, letting it flow through my body. Preparations are complete.

Naruto forms a much larger Rasengan in his right hand, the weight of the chakra making it heavy enough that it takes effort to hold up. He charges ahead recklessly, the earth turning over in his wake as he pours his strength into this attack. The chakra around his body is shifting towards the front...a reaction to my previous strikes with Mobius.

"Accuracy and power. A type of taijutsu that will satisfy both requirements. Focus will be key."

"AAAAHHH!"

"And with this..." One of Ane-ue's special techniques. A focused strike that combines flexibility with pure power. Something that would look simple to someone merely looking at the components, but is the opposite. Much like the Sage Art called Jakyou Messenga, concentration and timing are no longer optional.

I measure the Rasengan's distance and wait for Naruto to cheat; he does so and I am thankful for it. The chakra has it extend an extra foot forward in front of him to throw off my timing, and instead I spin past the violent ball of energy, right into my opponent's range. I take another step, turn, and launch an angled kick upwards with chakra bursting through it.

"Jayoku Houtenjin."

The impact is a merciless one, rippling with such power that I briefly leave the ground during the attack. A surge of blue sparks shoots upwards as my foot slams into Naruto's chin, sending him high into the air and well above the stadium walls in a single second. He floats a moment before starting to fall, the Rasengan having long disappeared. I can see the chakra around his form trying to properly react to his predicament.

"It is now that I can properly end this." I draw the butterfly knives from my pockets and cross them over my body, gathering more chakra. Naruto still has yet to recover from his skull rattling...and so, I am already victorious. "You will not react in time, Nine Tails. I win."

My body tenses, and in the next moment I move.

"White Snake Sage Technique: Jakyou Messenga."

Naruto rotates in the air to face me, trying to form yet another Rasengan. I move my arms and slash downwards at the perfect moment, tearing through his chakra cloak and his body all at once. I hear him scream out and hit the ground with a loud thump.

"..."

My wrists flick outwards to get rid of the blood on my knives before I put them back into place. As I turn, I see that the shroud of red, bubbling chakra is melting away, leaving Naruto on his back with two deep slashes on his chest. His healing is working very slowly, which must be due to his exhaustion...

"Naruto!"

Hina's voice breaks the silence. She and the others have returned, with Jiraiya. I exhale and start to return myself to normal.

"Void Heart...offline."

There are too many heavy emotions to sort through. But I know that I did what I had to do, and that Naruto will be okay.

"Lili. You're okay," Erika says as she approaches.

"It was a closer thing than I would have liked," I reply. "But yes, I did manage to survive. Hm..."

"Let me look at your right wrist," Hina says. "I...want to be able to do something..."

Sakura is already tending to Naruto, while Jiraiya is knelt beside his still form, looking on with worry. Hina looks at my wound and gently applies a salve to it.

"It should be okay on its own for now."

"Thank you, Hina. I'm sorry."

"You don't have to apologize. It was what you had to do...and something that scary..."

"What do you feel right now?" I ask her. We walk towards where Naruto is and get to our knees next to him. Sakura calmly continues to work.

"..." Hina gently places a hand on Naruto's head. "I feel...determined. I want to help him. I want to be by his side, so that he doesn't have to hurt like this again. Taking on that kind of burden alone, and not only smiling, but giving people like me hope, over and over again...it makes me want to fight more, for his sake."

"I felt the same way."

"Yes. That's why you could make the decision you made today. You love him too much to let him slip away."

"You really will make a wonderful wife for him, Hina."

She smiles. "I hope so. We still have a long way to go in this life of ours."

"At this point in time, things are stable," Sakura announces. "The exterior wounds have been healed well enough, but Naruto will need more time to properly recover. Rest is highly recommended within a medical facility. In addition to all of this, I have noted other injuries, both internal and external, that have been caused by reactions to volatile chakra. Even with the active healing factor, severe damage was being caused to Naruto's body on multiple levels. That damage is beginning to heal, but it is doing so slowly. He will need to be properly monitored and tended to by professionals of a higher skill level."

"But he's going to be okay," Jiraiya says.

"Yes, Naruto will be fine. He has shown great resilience in the past, and the injuries are not close to life threatening at this time. However, corrosion due to chakra output is a serious matter that may eventually cripple him in the future. There is a possibility that he may become unable to use jutsu or even perform basic shinobi movements because of damage to his chakra network. I am not privy to the true nature of the strength that rests inside of Naruto...but I am aware that there is a great danger involved. My recommendation is that all training and related activities be paused indefinitely until the completion of an extensive evaluation, which will come after adequate rest. This will be reflected in my report to Lady Tsunade."

"Don't go making unilateral decisions, kid."

"If necessary, I will back up Miss Haruno's statements," Erika says.

Jiraiya sighs and shakes his head. "I know you're trying your best, alright? Just don't get pushy. You two can come with me to the hospital and explain to Tsunade what's going on. That okay?"

"Perfectly fine."

"I'll conduct a final check on his vitals. Then we should head to the hospital afterwards. A moment, please," Sakura says.

"Are you okay, Lili?" Kakashi asks me.

I look up at him and nod. "Yes, I'm fine. Thank you for asking. I think...you should go to the hospital with the others. Make sure that everything is okay."

"I'll do that."

"You did well looking after us today. Thank you again, Kakashi."

"You're welcome, Lili."

"Everything is clear. Naruto can be safely moved, Lord Jiraiya," I hear Sakura say.

"Good. Let's get a move on. Listen, Lili-"

"Please take Naruto to the hospital," I say without moving my head. "There is nothing we have to say to each other."

He grunts. "Fine. See you, then."

I watch as Naruto is gently lifted up and out of sight. Erika, Sakura, Jiraiya, and Kakashi all start to leave.

"My apologies...another moment, please. I have one more person to tend to."

Sakura walks over to me and kneels, gently taking my wrist in her hands.

"May I, Lilith?"

"Yes, you may."

"Thank you." She unwraps the bandage and rubs an ointment over the burnt skin, then has her hands glow with chakra before layering them on top of it. Sakura is gentle and steady, just as Fio said this morning...and within a minute or two, my wrist is exactly like new. I rotate it a few times just to make sure.

"No discomfort?" she asks.

"None at all. You've done wonderful work, Sakura. Thank you."

"The honour is mine. I...must say that I'm increasingly impressed with you, Lilith. You managed to stop Naruto without seriously harming him. That attack was precise and missed his vital organs completely. It's little wonder the Hokage promoted you so quickly."

"Thank you for that."

"If I had taken your advice long ago...I..." She shakes her head. "I'm sorry. I was carrying on just now."

"Sakura. You remember what I said to you, right? That you are a person as well. That you also have a purpose in this world."

"I..."

"Not just for my sake, but for that of so many others. And Sasuke especially. Continue looking after him. You...are the home that he will come back to. I know that for sure."

"I...I've sinned so much," she says, sniffling.

"You have. But if I thought you were beyond help, beyond usefulness, you would have died in the forest that day. Carry on, Sakura. For the person you love enough to give your life for...and for the person who calls you friend, more than anything else."

She nods and wipes her tears. "Yes. I will."

"Look after our boy."

"Yes. Please take care, Lilith."

"You as well, Sakura."

She takes off along with the others. Now it's just the three of us here.

"Lili-nee? Are you really okay?" Hanabi asks.

"I'm...probably not as well as I keep saying I am," I admit.

This is isn't something I wanted, or expected. To have everything burst out, all at once...there are still so many things that I don't understand about the power inside of Naruto. Is Jiraiya really the only one who can help him? Is this path the only one suitable to help Naruto master the powers inside of him? What was it that the Fourth, Minato Namikaze, was thinking on the night he gave up his life to seal the Nine Tails inside of his own son? What was the former host, Kushina Uzumaki, feeling the moment her precious child became a host? I don't know if I'll ever get answers to those questions. I don't know if I should at times, even if I do love him dearly.

But I do know that I feel the same way as Hina: determined to be by his side, and to help him through this struggle.

I put my arms around Hina and Hanabi, and they respond by doing the same for me.

In the silence of the now empty stadium, we comfort each other.

Scarlet Justice - ep. 129
"Posit"
[Golden Rust: Prologue]
---

Another day leads to another mission. This time, however, the three junior members of Team Eight will be taking off on their own. I make breakfast for Fio, don my favourite black sweater, and then leave for the meeting point at the village's entrance.

A trip to the Iron Country, for the purpose of material and document exchanges. Political turmoil has increased as of late, and so the old man wants to send proper assurances to the samurai leadership. As of today, they are led by the legendary samurai Mifune, who wields the blade called Kurosawa. Senpai has mentioned him more than once, and was an admirer of him, along with another...

"Everyone's ready? Equipment checked?" Kurenai asks.

"Equipment checked and ready, sensei," I reply. "All clear."

She nods and looks over to Shino and Hina as they get their backpacks on. The Iron will be slightly colder than we're used to, and well out of the way compared to the other shinobi villages. It will certainly be an interesting trip for that alone. Hina wears her usual outfit, with her extra hair put up into a ponytail again. Shino looks much the same, save for one significant difference. He has a new pair of glasses on today.

"A present from your parents?" I ask him.

"Mother said it was a late gift for my promotion."

"Ah, I see. Hm...the material for the frame is lighter than before, yes?"

"It is."

"The lenses also look much sturdier," Hina says. "It must have cost quite a bit for them."

"Yes. Though Mother would not disclose the details."

"Well, Miss Kiko wouldn't want you to worry," she says with a smile. "It is a gift for her son, after all."

"It might sound bad from here, but...I really can't tell the difference between this and the last pair," Kurenai says with a frown.

"It's alright, sensei. Unlike your taste in food, you can change your perception on eye wear given some time."

She rolls her eyes at him. "You never miss your opportunities to needle me, do you..."

He pushes his glasses up with one finger. "I have been taught by the best."

"Hah. Well, every sign of progress is good. I know you've been on missions before, solo and otherwise...but I want you three to be careful out there."

"We will be," Hina says confidently. "In the meantime, petition heaven for our safe return, and be sure to take your rest, sensei."

"Hinata..."

"Remember that we love you dearly, and that we're also here for you," she says with a bright smile. "You're not just our sensei, you're our cool big sister."

Kurenai blushes and clears her throat. "Yes. Of course. I know that you'll do well, so...I was just giving you a bit of extra advice. With all that said, I'll be waiting for you to make it back."

"Then if it's okay...we're taking off now," I say. "We'll be thinking of you, Kurenai. Please take care."

"Until next time, sensei," Shino says.

"Take care, Kurenai-sensei," Hina says with a bow.

"Right. Good luck, Team Eight."

We nod to each other and start off at last, through the forest and into the summer morning.

"Come back safe, you three...I love you."

I hear Kurenai's whisper in the wind, and take it into me. We rise together from the first tree branch, and so our journey begins in earnest.

---

It has been nearly two days since the start of our mission, and we've decided to set up camp in the twilight hours to rest. With no estimated arrival time, we should be able to take as long as we need to reach our destination. But it would be prudent to get there and back in a responsible amount of time.

Our current position is on the eastern edge of Grass Country. Shino spreads his insects out to help with surveillance, and volunteers to take an extended first watch for us. He must have his reasons, so Hina and I accept his offer without a tussle. This is neutral territory and we have a good enough vantage point, so we use the tent that I prepared for cold weather camping.

I don't feel very tired, so I read one of the novels that I've packed while I rest with Hina inside. We're both halfway inside of our sleeping bags.

"..."

The quiet isn't unsettling, but...it's a bit unnatural right now. Hina gets the same idea and turns over to face me. I catch her movement in my peripheral and place a marker inside of my book before closing it, giving her my full attention.

It has been about three weeks since my fight with Naruto.

"Do you want to talk about it?" I ask.

"If it's okay."

"It is. I have things that perhaps I should say, but they can always wait."

"Can they?"

"They can, especially for you. A lot has happened, Hina. More than most can reliably take in."

"That much is true..." She sighs. "After going to see him recently, at home...things are set to change again. We've been talking a while, and I've learned to take note of things left unsaid...the small gaps in communication that come from a person's character. You and I can read each other so well for reasons like that. That incident hasn't rattled him too much, but he's more aware of that strength inside of him, and how it can be perceived. He's been trying to take a different approach to his interactions with Sasuke. So they're on much better terms now."

"That's good to hear."

"It is. Still...Jiraiya's hand is becoming heavier by the day."

"What has he done now?" I ask.

"They're still restricted on Lady Tsunade's orders, meaning that there's no heavy training or use of the Nine Tails' chakra. You might recall that she scolded them both thoroughly for their recklessness."

"Indeed I do."

"The two of them are planning to do extensive training as soon as Naruto is cleared for a return to service. That is to say, they will be doing so in isolation, away from the village."

"Something like that...why leave? Aren't there enough facilities here?" I ask. A moment passes and I come to a realization. "That's right, I forgot. Jiraiya has his work to do with regards to Akatsuki, among other things. He can take care of Naruto for a while and keep his finger on the pulse of the world. It's not a terrible plan, but I tire of him and his antics."

"It might be a few years before they come back, if what I picked up was correct. Very likely they'll be leaving before the end of summer."

"What do you plan to do?"

"Nothing out of the ordinary. I think that I should just spend as much time with him as I can, and try to keep him grounded. You know...I find myself falling in love with him more and more each day. He's still the pure-hearted person I remembered. Always fighting forward, and tries to be mindful of his loved ones."

"I'm happy that he recovered well enough from our little scuffle," I say. "The outcome was never in doubt, but those moments where I thought he was lost...those were unsettling, more than the feeling of that malicious chakra. I wish I could figure out what that man was thinking when he placed the Nine Tails inside of that boy..."

"Yes..."

"What about you? Are you doing alright, Hina?"

"Better than I thought I would," she says with a small smile. "There was a bit of anxiety after seeing Naruto in that state, but after watching him recover, I felt a lot better. There's an optimism inside of me that wasn't there a long time ago. It means that I can bounce back from distressing things like this. The old me...she would have crumbled to pieces already."

"That's true. You certainly have grown since we first met."

"And it's all your doing."

"Some of it, at least. After all, if you didn't choose to take the first step forward, it would have been for nothing."

"I still owe you my life, Lili."

"I suppose you can have the last word on that, then."

"Thank you kindly."

I laugh softly at that.

"Do you have your own plans?" Hina asks.

"Plans? What do you mean?"

"Since Naruto is going to be off in the countryside training...I wondered if you might be doing something similar for your own growth. In the space of time I have, I will more than likely be making use of the facilities at the Hyuuga Estate. It only makes sense, and I'll have Hanabi and Neji around to guide me."

"Ah, I see what you mean. My thoughts have always been that I would continue my training with Ane-ue and Luna. So I would be away from the village for a while in that case. I have to go through a few more checks before making that decision though, like figuring out the movements of Akatsuki, what's going to be happening with Sasuke, things of that nature. It wouldn't do to leave the village and then come back to see all of my hard work fall apart. Not that I think you and the other girls would let it happen if you could help it, but..."

"No, I understand. There are many things that I'm not privy to, and probably shouldn't be at this point in time. Not to mention that everything to do with Sasuke is...difficult."

"Without a doubt, it's a significant headache." I sigh. "We'll have to see what can be done about his condition and status within the village. Danzo has started to shuffle his pieces around. However, it's nothing we should worry about too much at this moment."

"I agree. I don't have anything else I need to talk about. Do you, Lili?"

"Nothing, no. Let's try and get some sleep, then. Shino wanted to take a long watch, but we also don't want him stretching himself too thin."

"Yes. I'll see you in a few hours, then."

I blow her a kiss, and she smiles before closing her eyes. I shut off my reading light and settle into my sleeping bag before closing my own eyes, drifting into sleep.

---

We continue on our way, moving across the far north of the country where the Hidden Rain Village is located. There hasn't been much talk of it recently...Naruto said that he encountered shinobi from that place during the Chuunin Exams, and that they were ones to favour assassination techniques and various types of illusions. It matches up with the reports that I've read, as the Hidden Rain is a favourite of clients who want to erase their problems without drawing too much attention. Rumblings of civil unrest, though few and far in between, give me pause. The leader of the village is a man known as Hanzo of the Salamander, notoriously powerful with a flee on sight order, the same as the Fourth Hokage. He was also the one who wrote the names of Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru into the pages of history, naming them the Legendary Three Shinobi for their feat of surviving against him in the Second Shinobi World War.

I wonder what type of person Hanzo is. Perhaps one day soon I will find out.

He also had a connection to the samurai, whose nation we are heading towards at the moment. Things have changed substantially for them as well, ever since the formation of the shinobi villages. Our ideologies differ: samurai tend to hold to their strong ideals and convictions, honing themselves constantly in the same way they do their weapons. Shinobi, unfortunately, have wildly diverging loyalties depending on the situation, and can easily become corrupted by the prospects of money, fame, and power. Samurai are by no means immune, but the transient nature of strong and unified pursuits of harmony within the shinobi world makes any drive towards peace difficult. It is said that for this reason, the shinobi world will be endlessly wrapped in darkness and conflict. I want to change that some day, but I know that it will be difficult. I must grow in wisdom as well as strength if I am to keep that promise to myself. It's also possible that the shinobi world won't survive the transition I have planned for it...that much can be mourned for a short moment if we get there. This isn't exactly a world we can't live without...

"I hear the samurai are quite formidable," Shino says to me. At this point, we don't have to worry about dodging storms. This country is just a bit miserable compared to Fire.

"You heard correctly. They're all skilled weapon users, from the youth to the elderly," I reply. "It is said that every family with at least one samurai knows how to wield a blade by default, because the one person makes sure to spread their teachings to their loved ones in case of emergency. Naturally, this means that there are those in the next generation who are already skilled weapon users the moment they come of age."

"An efficient system."

"Quite. But of course, their swords are not just tools. They are extensions of themselves, and are treated as such. Some shinobi have a great love for their weapons and focus on maintaining them for that reason. The samurai have a much deeper philosophy than that."

"I would think that there would be a lot more of them," Hina says.

"Yes. The truth is that many samurai bands saw the changes in the world early on, and decided to switch over to becoming shinobi. It was an easy enough transition, seeing as they already knew how to use chakra for combat purposes. Shinobi were also seen as both cheaper for clients, and much more willing to take on unsavoury and dangerous missions. Samurai on the other hand, wanted fair compensation and refused work that clashed with their consciences. This led to them being relied on less and less within the growing shinobi world, and thus they are now found mainly within their own country, living and working freely as members of the military."

"Do...you think we can learn something from them? Perhaps an observation or two?"

"Certainly. I suspect that as long as we remain respectful, they will show us proper hospitality. Lessons can be gleaned from such interactions."

"I see. Then I'll do my best."

"That was never in doubt," I say with a smile.

We move forward as the days continue, further west through barren and uninhabited lands. Unsuitable for living, or much else. The climate is a unique mix of dry air, harsh wind, and temperatures that alternate between extreme heat and vicious, biting cold. From what I can recall of the school books in my previous, normal life, these conditions are supposed to be similar to that of the surfaces of heavenly bodies. Of course, since we have breathable air and a complex atmosphere, it means our travel through these places on Earth are merely inconvenient as opposed to immediately fatal. I do wonder what travel beyond the bounds of this world would be like. And the moon itself, there are interesting legends about how it was created. More things to research later. I can't wait.

"This should be the place, Boss."

Finally. It's been about five days since we left the village, which is a good pace with everything considered. Though it's summer everywhere else, the Iron Country is quite cool at this time of year, with light layers of snow covering everything around us. I imagine that it's even colder away from the eastern border, where we currently sit. Shino makes a large enough fire pit and we stock it with plenty of wood and other flammable materials. The fire is lit, and a large, brilliant flame emerges out of it. More than visible to anyone watching.

"Hina, one last check of the code before we start," I say to her. She nods and takes out a scroll, scanning it quickly before nodding to me in confirmation.

"Yes. It's as listed...the material we brought was the correct one for the signal."

"Thank you. Let's step back a bit and wait for the response to come in. Completing the signal now." I pull a small bag out from my pocket, filled with salt. Hina and Shino retreat to the shadow of a different tree each, and I toss the bag into the flames before jumping back myself. The roaring fire flares up slightly as it changes colour to a brilliant yellow, burning like that for a minute or two before slowly returning to normal as the material is consumed. The one hundred fifty second timer starts now, and so we wait.

Right on schedule, a figure cuts into the area and wipes out the flames completely with the samurai's famous technique, iaido. Another follows and stands next to them. Though it is interesting...they're not wearing the traditional samurai armour that I've seen in books. They did do everything correctly, so it doesn't matter as far as the mission goes. But it still is curious. I make a bit of noise from behind my tree trunk before emerging, then quickly whistling twice to call out my comrades. We walk together towards the two samurai and stop a fair distance for both parties.

The first, the one who performed their iai to put out the flames, is a woman. Quite a lovely sight, at that. She has long black hair, with a stray bang crossing over her right eye, hazel eyes, and fair skin. A maroon sweater covers her upper half, with the lower half consisting of faulds and tassets layered over black pants and boots. The second is a gentleman with the same chocolate brown skin as Erika and short black hair; handsome looking with brown eyes, and quite fit from what I can tell. He wears a hand knit black sweater, with a blue vest over top of it and dark pants. His footwear is interesting, as they are those athletic shoes I've seen once upon a time. Unlike his partner, he carries little trace of the standard samurai trappings – just the sword on his side.

"You guys made it over okay, I hope."

"We did. The signal wasn't too much trouble?" I ask him.

"Not at all, easily dealt with. General Mifune said we were getting some solid characters, and he wasn't wrong," my host replies with a bright smile. Handsome and friendly...lovely to see, in any case.

"We don't wanna stand around too long chatting, yeah," the woman says. "Let's get everyone over and out of the cold some."

"Yeah, got it. Introductions first, though?"

"Ah, yeah. Sorry about that."

"Heh, no worries. Well, good morning to everyone. I know it's been a long trip from the Leaf, and we're happy to have you over. My name's Joshua, but you can call me Josh if you feel comfortable with that. As you might have guessed, I'm a samurai and part of the armed forces for the Iron Country. My job's mainly to escort you around while you get that important diplomatic work done, but if you have any questions or places you want to check out, just ask."

"Yuna," the woman says next. "I'm a samurai of the Iron too, and this guy's partner. If I seem like a hard-ass, don't worry too much about it. Just trying to do my job and not have the old man yell at me too much. Any worries about anything, you let me know. Josh is the one who knows about all the food spots, though."

"Heh."

"Word of advice, try not to do shinobi things while you're in the area. We're neutral and all, but people have their preconceptions of how you guys act. Since we can't do shit about that, you should keep your heads down for the most part and stick behind us. Our job is to deal with bullshit so that you don't have to."

"And so that you can give the Hokage a glowing report," Joshua says.

Yuna nods. "Yeah. The most important part of all. I'd like that fat bonus at the end of all this. Wanna get my hands on that new hair iron...anyways. Let's haul butt to our ride. Comes around every fifteen minutes from the station. Ah, shit." She shakes her head. "Sorry. I was...under the impression that you shinobi would be a pain in the ass, so I've been hurrying it along on reflex..."

"Bad first experience?" I ask.

"And tenth. And twentieth."

"It's...been interesting meeting up with shinobi from different lands. You guys are the coolest so far, though. So props for that," Joshua says with another smile.

"Well, let us properly finish introductions. My name is Lilith Kobayashi, jounin of the Hidden Leaf, and mission leader. It has been lovely meeting you both. My associates will introduce themselves. Ah, and Lili is perfectly fine if you are comfortable with that."

"My name is Hinata Hyuuga, chuunin of the Hidden Leaf and member of the Hyuuga Clan. Very nice to meet you."

"My name is Shino Aburame, chuunin of the Hidden Leaf and member of the Aburame Clan. Thank you for having us."

"Intros are done with. Quite a star studded cast we've got here...the Scarlet Viper herself, eh..."

"Indeed, one of my many titles," I say to Joshua.

"Hm. Well, we can chat about that a little later. Yuna had the right idea earlier, let's get into town proper. Then we can have a nice warm bite to eat."

"Barbecue sounds good," Yuna says.

"Yeah, been itching for some ribs myself. What do our guests think?"

I get affirming nods from Hina and Shino. "We are all on board," I say.

"Great. Let's go."

The five of us start at a light jog, exiting the snow covered forest and down the first visible path.

The other reasons samurai fell behind include: not expanding their technique lists outside of very limited methods, a seeming refusal to use any sort of elemental chakra, refusing to use hand signs, not doing research into novel applications and tools, and an utter inability to keep up with mobile and stealthy ninjas outside of their sword's reach.

They seem to be highly effective as a SDF, which I guess is enough for them when not dealing with top 1% of ninjas.

But they are very stubborn about their methods.

I wouldn't say highly efficient, but yes, if you need to hold ground, especially fortified ground with internal passageways that must be traversed, samurai can fight ninjas and not immediately die like most people.

That limited technique list hinders their training, especially if they don't use surface walk techniques.

I just assume it's an ideological choice in the end and they can do basic manipulation like for surface walking. According to Hanzo the samurai who got deep enough into ninjutsu and the like just stopped being samurai altogether, might have been too much of a hassle one way or another. Different fighting styles and the like, adjustments with the armor compared to without since it has a lot of survival equipment built into it that modern shinobi go without. It's a much faster era of fighting from the third war on. Of course the samurai also have variable weapons, like varied cutting and piercing shapes over normal swords, long range attacks etc.

Lots to think about and many possibilities. I mainly think it was a matter of ideals given how Hanzo got corrupted and Mifune didn't after both experienced adversity. Like it's not "shinobi bad samurai good" but about how the harsh environment can wear a soul down if they're grounded in a certain way. If that makes sense, I guess. In that way, the samurai would prefer to give up potential benefits of additional ninjutsu.

I was less talking about the morality angle and more that by reducing the number of basic allowed chakra control techniques available to them that they simply progress slower. Those two exercises are not just insanely practical, but major jumps in chakra control helping even total clods onto the path of gitting gud. Without an equivalent it may be that samurai are faced with a massive gap in their chakra control ladder and have to take a less efficient route that holds them back. It would explain why samurai are a fading breed.

Ah yeah my bad. I see exactly what you mean now, that's a fair way of looking at it.

"Speculate"
[Golden Rust: Opening]
---

"Runs real smooth. We had a heck of a time getting it right, but a couple decades always helps."

I nod while looking through the window of the train. This is one that uses steam for power, and is a mirror of the transports I remember seeing as a little girl. The flow of technology on this continent has been interrupted by many things, such as war and espionage, so on and so forth. So it's not terribly confusing as to why things like auto coaches and locomotives such as this one are sparse and often have to be built from first principles. It actually might be better in the end, since I have no doubts someone will come along and figure out how to make these things run with chakra, or some sort of clean natural energy.

"I take it the samurai are not a fan of coal," I say to Joshua as he sits across from me.

"Nah, not for moving back and forth like this. Trains aren't that common in the world, but the tracks are, if that makes sense. You've got cranks and pumps and the like that people rig themselves, then they get a good set of wheels and move things around using the little intercity systems. We're still trying to figure it all out, but tech is improving."

"We do a lot better with boats," Yuna says from across the aisle. Hina and Shino are sitting across from her. "Got the market cornered on that one."

"Civilian transport right now. The General...well, you know how we are about getting involved in shinobi affairs. We build a military rated sea transport and you'd have a big fight between the Cloud and Mist in a heartbeat. Reasons like that keep us isolated, too. Real downer," Joshua says. "I did hear through the grapevine...Frost was messing around with automobiles."

"Hm. Really."

"Got some friends with their ears to the ground at all times," he says with a smile.

"Big nerds just like him," Yuna quips.

"Yep!"

"Don't give the guy too much attention. He'll talk your ears off about this train by itself."

"Sure will."

"I think it's good. We need more handsome and well-read men in this world of ours," I say with a smile. He chuckles heartily at that.

"I heard the samurai were those of discipline and tradition," Shino says. He adjusts his glasses.

"Heh. Not too distracted by my sweater puppies, are ya?" Yuna teases.

"Yuna, c'mon."

She rolls her eyes at Joshua. "Yeah, yeah. Well...Shino, ain't it? Times have been changing for a while and some of us have shown off enough to get away with individual style and all that. Most samurai are totally into the standard armour. It's not half bad, got some nifty tech inside, good in all sorts of conditions. But some of us like the flexibility that we get outside of it, so we can go with a little less extra protection in exchange for some freedom."

"We're also commissioned officers, so that helps. High enough up there in rank, at least," Joshua says. "But it's as Yuna says. The samurai are starting to enter a new era. Not giving up on their ideals, but slowly shifting towards something new. Helps that the continent is still mostly stable, thanks to the Hokage. Excellent when it comes to diplomacy."

"Too soft, though."

"I have to agree. War is a bitter taste that he's experienced too many times before...still. If the age of strife in this world is to truly end, decisive action has to be taken at some point."

"It can't just be velvet gloves forever," I say.

"Yes, exactly."

"Joshua? May I ask a question?" Hina asks.

"Sure you can. Hinata, right?"

"Yes. Thank you very much. I wanted to know if you had any idea as to why we would have such an exchange, when the samurai are famously neutral in regards to dealing with the five great nations."

"Ah, yeah. Not terribly complicated or secretive, that. Some back and forth dialogue happened, or rather has been happening for the past few months. Mainly between our counterparts at slightly lower levels than the military leaders. Of course, I've got a bit of an inside track on these things. You'll see what I mean when we get to town."

"Yep. I won't spoil the surprise, either," Yuna says.

We cross the hinterland at a decent speed and eventually come upon civilization once more. Rural areas, followed by a sort of suburbia with decadent looking homes sitting on the town outskirts. And then, finally, the tracks lead us into the density of the city. It's unlike anything else on this continent that I've seen...a mix of traditional homes and newer ones with sharp and clean lines. Old buildings from the distant past mixed up with new structures that rise high and give shape to the skyline. Posh storefronts and boardwalks in the distance, as the city meets the ocean waters. And many, many ports for boats to stop in, whether it's for freight or pleasure. Trains laden with material and product of all kinds lumber off, puffing harmless clouds of steam into the air. More lumber in and wind down to a stop as ships dance around each other in the bay.

"Welcome to the city, y'all. Kurosawa Port."

"It's certainly a sight," I say quietly, looking through the window. "The fruits of peace and prosperity..."

"And a few foreigners from across the way," Joshua continues.

"Josh there is third down the line," Yuna says.

"Yep. My grandfather came here a few decades ago with my grandmother. Wanted to do something new and make some money. Those two had their hands in every type of industry you could think of. Gramps is somewhere on the other side of the continent, or so he says. Eh. We don't worry about him too much, he's happy."

"Not like anything could hurt that old slab of iron."

"Heh. That's true."

"..." Could this be a possible future for the shinobi world? A place of growth and safety for many people...instead of this violent, turbulent world that too many have to suffer through. It's too bad that we can't stay longer than the designated period. There's so much that I want to learn...

The train pulls into our designated station and comes to a stop. Yuna steps out and nods to Joshua, then he leads us down the folding steps and towards the station exit. Samurai in full armour are moving about, occasionally giving respectful nods and bows to Joshua and Yuna as our group passes by. Civilians give us a wide enough berth as we walk through the train station; whether it's because of our escorts or our appearances is unclear at the moment. But a hassle free experience is always nice.

"There are those secret tunnels and passages, but...ah, I'm pretty confident in my bodyguard skill. Yuna is, too," Joshua says.

"Damn right."

"It's always nice to give our visitors a look at city life. You guys don't mind walking over to the government building, do you?"

I look to Hina and Shino, who both nod.

"We should be fine walking today. Thank you for your hospitality, as always," I say to Joshua.

"No problem. Let's get going, then."

We walk together in a straight line, Joshua up ahead and Yuna following behind us. Kurosawa Port is lively enough without being terribly crowded, with people moving through designated lanes on their bicycles and other foot powered implements. There is no one style of dress to look to, either. Aside from the samurai who walk the streets in their white armour, there are wardrobes of many shapes and colours that are very clearly from another part of the world. The largely similar skin tones of the Leaf are replaced by a rainbow of shades, with hair colours to match.

"This is certainly a diverse place," Shino says.

"Sure is. Lots of different and strange things happened to get us here. The city founder met up with the samurai and struck a deal with them way back when. This place was quiet for a while, but slowly building. Things started to take off around the time Gramps and Grams got here," Joshua explains. "Always a market for shipping and the like, fish too. We have other stuff going and carry on trading with the Hidden Rock, for example. Terrain issues mean they like to import when they can from nearby nations."

"So I know by now," I say. "What about mercenary services?"

"Fuck 'em," Yuna says.

"That's the company line, yeah," Joshua says with a laugh. "We've been hearing about an upstart group lately, not much info on them. They're called Akatsuki, I think."

"We have been investigating their movements as well recently."

"Ah, good stuff. Yeah, around here services are part of the whole. So if you need something done like that within the Iron, just drop a line and a friendly neighbourhood samurai will stop by to help out. Don't even have to flip 'em a coin."

"Tax man takes care of basic salary," Yuna explains. "But if you're loaded you can pay out for out of country trips, bounties, whatever you can think of. The network is meant so that nobody gets left out or left behind."

"I see. So it's quite a bit different from our model as shinobi," Hina says.

"Yeah. Not really something you can build back home on a dime, since as we've said before, shinobi have different motivations and economic structures, stuff like that. We've got plenty of industry to subsidize our military, and there's a lot less to deal with on our end because of population size, border control, yadda yadda. Not enough time to go over it all."

"Yuna knows a lot about this stuff. Got a fancy degree for it, too!" Joshua says.

"Tch. Yeah, well...I figured it was an easy way to get through the ranks...and take some time off for myself, I guess. Helps that you get paid to go to school."

"You have the option to pursue higher education in order to sharpen some extra skills," Joshua explains. "It's pretty much encouraged these days, and some fields are promoted at a higher rate whenever they need specialists in an area or two. You can earn bonuses and the level of education you pursue translates into pay increases, no matter how far you choose to go. So if you just want to get a certificate or something, you get some extra cash in your pocket. General Mifune figures we can afford to do this because the trend is that most people who enter the military are going to chill out and be foot soldiers or generalists anyways."

"Basically trying to build the samurai profile a bit," Yuna continues. "It's an attempt to get ahead of the curve, which is surprising for the old man. Usually pretty set in his ways."

"That's what happens when you've been a samurai forever."

"Yeah, something like that. Still a dusty old weirdo, though."

"Sheesh." Joshua shakes his head. "Well, let's keep that promise I made earlier. Time for some good eats!"

"Oh, we're here already," Yuna says. "Cool."

The five of us have stopped at what looks like a mobile food stand. I can smell barbecue, and it's already making my mouth water a bit. A woman with a pink shirt and hair tied into twin buns pokes her head through the stand opening.

"Hey, Auntie Park."

"If it isn't my favourite nephew," she says with a smile. "And Miss Yuna, of course. In a good mood, I hope?"

"Day hasn't been bad so far."

"Good to hear. And our guests...shinobi from the Leaf, it seems. Welcome to our little port town."

"Thank you," I say. The three of us bow politely.

"Wanted to hook up our friends with some of the best ribs in town, Auntie," Joshua says. "Top three, at least."

"Oh my," she says with a giggle. "High praise, and in front of guests, too. I'll have to make sure what I have cooking is immaculate. How does another five minutes sound before I get back to you, sweetheart?"

"More than fine. We'll be here."

"Then I'll see you in a bit." Miss Park ducks back inside.

"It's been a while since I've had something like this," Hina says.

"Really? So you haven't been able to get out much lately," I say to her.

"Not too much, no. But honestly, I don't go out to restaurants much unless it's with you and the rest of our group."

"Mm. We should plan something when we get back, then. Truth be told, I've gotten so much into the rhythm of cooking for Fio that eating at home has been regular for me as well. Nothing bad about that, of course, but it's always nice to get outside and socialize properly with friends."

"Yes, I agree."

"The difficulty with outside establishments is their lack of menu options," Shino says.

"Hm. There is something to be said about the salads...less can be more. And the less said about that monstrosity, the better..."

"Monstrosity?" Hina asks me. "What do you mean?"

"Shino and I had an outing the other day to a certain restaurant. The one midtown, across from the antique store with the wood mannequin in the window."

"Ah, I know which one you mean."

"I ordered their so called special salad, and it was truly an abomination to surpass all others," I explain. "If I had taken more than a single bite, I fear all of the salt would have mummified me instantaneously. And the damned thing was half dressing by volume. Don't try to imagine it, you'll get sick."

"I don't think I could comprehend such a thing," Hina says, frowning.

"An insult to good food," Shino says. "Not just the unwarranted addition of dried meats, but the fruit toppings and such. A salad made exclusively for those uncouth souls who despise salads. It makes my blood boil thinking about it..."

"Shino...I'm sorry you had to witness that," Hina says while rubbing his back gently. "And I'm sorry that Lili took a bite of it."

"Well, let's hope those food based nightmares don't linger for too long after this," Joshua says. "Sounds like a hell of a salad, though..."

"Something that she'd eat," Yuna says.

"Come on. You know she wouldn't."

"You're biased because you're close to her. Bottomless pit."

"Shush."

"Here you are, nephew. Top class ribs, nice and hot," Miss Park says as she reemerges. She hands a set of cardboard containers to Joshua, and he hands her payment before taking the containers away. "Overly generous, as always."

"Hey, don't you start."

She laughs and reaches over to pat his cheek. "Take care, okay?"

"I will, Auntie. Thanks so much."

"Of course. Have a lovely day, everyone." She waves us off, and we continue on our way through the city.

"The pol hangout is close. We'll check in at the front and then head down to one of the empty rooms. Should be able to eat in peace there," Joshua says as we continue walking. After a minute or two, a large, distinct building comes into view. Rectangular, with glass panels that catch the light and distribute it in different directions. It makes the exterior look bright, and stand out even more. There are circular paths around the building, a water fountain, and statues of samurai in various styles of armour. All of their faces are concealed in some way, and the plates near the base do not hold any names. Just the era that each type of samurai originated from.

The doors slide open as we near them, revealing a stylish lobby with dark, marbled floors and carpets strategically placed. There are soft chairs and tables so that guests can find a place to write, or diplomats can hold quick discussions with each other before heading to various parts of the multi-level structure. Lighting is bright enough to see in while not being so bright as to irritate the eyes or be distracting. Samurai with and without helmets are here as well, with officers dressed in traditional robes and swords on their hips at all times.

"Wow, really? I thought she would be back by now," Joshua says to the receptionist.

"It seems that she's tied up at the moment...according to what I have here, there was an unexpected interruption. More accurately, some information that didn't get to her in time," the woman says with a frown.

"I see. And I can't have him look at it, since it isn't his area to mess around with...alright. I'm gonna head home, then. Tell her that I stopped by, just in case."

"Will do, sir. Oh, did you want me to call a transport for you?"

"Oh, if you can spare one. That'd be pretty sweet, thanks!"

"It will be out front. Have a good day, sir."

"Thanks, you too." Joshua walks back to us.

"She's not here?" Yuna asks.

"Nah. Something came up, apparently. Has her stuck in the legislative office across town. She can stop by the house and pick up the documents later, no point in waiting around here forever. We're getting a ride this time. Don't want the ribs to get too cold."

"Great. Didn't want to walk that far anyways."

"Was that the person we were supposed to meet with?" Hina asks.

"Yeah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The big reveal we were talking about earlier is that she's my Ma. Maria Walker. My Pops works around here too, he retired from samurai work but still wanted something to do for the most part. That's Jonah Walker. So the General hooked him up with a job as the interior minister. Of course, he had all the relevant skills beforehand. That helped."

"So you have tradition in your family as well," Shino says. We start to follow Yuna back outside.

"Yeah, and I did learn sword work from my old man. That's not why I'm carrying one myself, though. Yuna mentioned earlier that I'm a pretty big bookworm, and my first thoughts were of becoming a scholar or something similar when I grew up. Believe it or not, I looked a lot different than I do now. I got inspired though, and after looking into my family history, wanted to be more like my grandfather. Started training seriously, and we ended up here. Life can take you some strange places, you know?"

"Different is an understatement. I've seen pictures," Yuna says.

"We can show 'em off back at the house, for sure. Ride's here."

A bicycle taxi, also called 'rickshaw' in this part of the world, arrives in front of us. There are two cyclists and a covered carriage with two rows of seating, enough to fit all of us at once. We get inside and the drivers take us away from the government building, along a few winding paths and back through the large streets of Kurosawa Port. A smooth ride takes us towards the city's edge, where houses become elegant and fewer in number.

And finally, we come to a stop. The home in front of us is a beautiful, western style structure with what looks to be two main floors at the least, and a colourful flower garden split down the middle by a smooth stone path. The front porch is more than big enough to hold a party on, with benches and rocking chairs mixed in between the sturdy tables. Not a terribly big home, but the presence makes it feel like one in a lot of ways.

"You have a beautiful garden," Hina says as we walk towards the front door.

"Glad you think so. We do our best with it...helps that the flowers are relatively easy to take care of year after year," Joshua says. "Mostly perennials stocked up, you know how it is."

"Ah, I see. Knowing your limitations when it comes to gardening is key. If you're not around as often, it's a must to select hardier flowers to raise."

"Yep! Fortunately the missus and I found ourselves a selection that was both colourful and sturdy. Been a few years since we picked this mix and never went back. Oh, Yuna."

"I got it." She knocks on the door and we wait patiently. A moment later, two locks slide out of place and the door opens to reveal a vibrant looking woman.

"Hey, y'all!"

"Hey yourself," Yuna says. "Looking like a light bulb, as usual."

"Hard not to be happy. It's another good day, you know?" Our smiling hostess is about the same height as Joshua and Yuna, with a head of long, feathered blonde hair. Her eyes are bright blue and remind me very much of Naruto. They blend well with her fair skin, and the light freckles that dance across her cheeks. Very casually dressed in a half opened shirt and rolled up jeans, showing off how solidly built she is. And of course, I wouldn't miss her lovely curves from top to bottom – I'm sure that she would have quite the time buttoning her shirt up properly as is. She could pass for a model, assuming she isn't one in her spare time.

"Ladies, gentleman. I present to you my lovely and super awesome wife, Catherine," Joshua says with a smile.

"That's me! Nice to meet all of you. I don't use my government name too often, so everybody from here to the city limits calls me Cadence! You've got my hubby there to thank for my little nickname, hehe."

"I think I just called you that one day and it stuck."

"Sure did. Let's get some of those boxes outta your hands, yeah? Auntie Park's ribs always go down well. Oh, Josh. Did you want us inside or out?" she asks as she takes half of the boxes into her hands.

"Ma might be coming by to pick up some stuff. Easier for her to drop in if we're in the back."

"Got it. Then you guys don't need to take off your shoes, long as you follow the carpet straight down and out towards the yard. I'll get our food warm and plated before bringing it out to you with the fixings. Any objections?"

"No, ma'am," we all say in unison.

Cadence smiles happily. "Great! Come on in."

Our couple shares a quick kiss before Joshua leads us inside. Cadence closes the door behind Yuna, and we start on our way towards the backyard.

1st Anniversary
Just wanted to make another announcement for the milestone. We passed a year on June 7th. Things have slowed down since the start, people leave because of content reasons, some just don't log in, others are quiet and just watch. All of that is fine and will happen, especially with content and format peculiarities. But I can tell that people are still reading, and interested.

So thanks for supporting me up to this point, and hopefully beyond until the end. We are 560,000 words in and approaching the end of what we know as Part 1 of the original series. There are still more twists and turns to come, more changes, and more people and concepts to develop. The path to the end is pretty clear. God willing, I will make it to the end of this part and everything else to come. Thanks again for reading, and I hope you all enjoy what is to come.

Ascertain
within the chapter there will be mention, during a conversation, of an incident of sexual coercion, which falls under sexual assault and more specifically rape. the description will not be graphic in nature, but as it still exists you should be informed as readers just in case. thanks.

"Man, it's been a while...these ribs? Killer."

"Super on point today. Hey, when Grams gets back from her trip, we gotta get her to make a few extra racks for you, Yuna."

"Hell yeah. Blew my mind to atoms the last time I had 'em..."

The six of us are seated comfortably around a glass table in the backyard. There are more flowers here, neatly arranged in a big square that surrounds us and marks the yard's edges. We have much in the way of side dishes; mashed potatoes, string beans, cabbage, yams, pasta...and something quite indulgent, a dish of what I recall as 'macaroni and cheese' that I had in the old country once upon a time. This version is baked in the oven and has more cheese in it than should be humanly possible. And it's delicious. I make sure to memorize the flavours so I can make it for Fio later.

"Some good timing with the ribs," Cadence says. "I was about to fry some chicken, but you saved me the time and mess."

"Hey, always happy to help out," Joshua says with a smile. "Smashed it out of the park with your cooking anyways."

"Aw, I'm just a humble student."

"Humble my ass. Shit, I'd marry you to get food like this every night," Yuna mumbles while eating.

"You go on too much, Yuna!"

"She sure does. Thought you only had men on the menu," Joshua says with a smirk.

"Shaddap. It was a compliment, nerd."

"It really is delicious," Hina says. "Thank you very much for hosting us, Miss Cadence."

"You're welcome, sweetie. Cookin' is one of the things I really worked on for a while. Mostly to make the potential hubby happy at first, but then the feeling of being able to make awesome food for yourself whenever you wanted just made it all better! I was kinda sheltered growing up, you see."

"Cadence here is from the founding family of the Port," Yuna explains after wiping her mouth.

"Yep, yep! My Pop-Pop, Marcus A. Kennedy the Second. He was the one who came over and made the big deal with the samurai all that time ago. It was during...hmm, I think the cool-down between the second and third wars. Oh, by the by, he's still kicking around, he'll be a century old next year! Lives in a big old place not super far out of town, but enough to get some peace and quiet. Nan-Nan is with him, too!" Cadence looks at me thoughtfully before smiling. "Yeah. She had a full head of pretty red hair, just like Miss Lili over here. And sounds just as regal."

"Not just a piece of work, but the whole cake," Joshua says.

"That's definitely our Lili," Hina says with a smile.

"Then you'll definitely be good trouble once you're all grown up. Keep it going, yeah?" Cadence says to me.

"I certainly will. Thank you, Cadence."

"My pleasure."

"So how did you two meet?" Shino asks. "There is a sort of disparity visible to us-"

"Man, you just go right for it, don't you?" Yuna says.

"Teaching our friend the value of added tact has been a...process, let's say. Especially when he gets comfortable like this," I say. "In the Leaf, we are more culturally homogeneous, and so to many people from our part of the world, this would be a curiosity of sorts."

"Not averse to it, but not terribly experienced either," Joshua concludes.

"Yes, to put it simply."

"That's all fair. I think the only other place close to this is...Lightning Country, I think? The various tribes and bands might have migrated from across the ocean, or just drifted towards that part of the continent and stayed there. Lots of fascinating theories to talk about...but we'd be here forever if we got into that, heh. So, how we met. Pretty simple, actually. Cadence used to come down every so often from the next town over, and she dragged me into one of her games when she saw me reading alone. I was a round fella at the time, not very suited to athletics. About nine years old, we were."

"Real cute, though," Cadence says.

"So everyone says. But yeah, that experience was pretty nice. I only used to play when she was in town, and then I had that sort of enlightenment happen after reading the stuff Gramps left around. I told her about it and she was like, 'why not get into shape so you can do the stuff he did?', so I took her up on that."

"It was...the best and the worst decision at the time for me," she says. "The best because Josh turned into a total hunk. The worst because...well, Josh turned into a total hunk, and now there were all sorts of girls chasing him around."

He shudders.

"I remember that. They woulda torn him into chunks and took 'em home if they could get away with it. It was honestly kinda crazy," Yuna says.

"So we were best friends for a long time before this," Joshua explains. "What happened next was-"

The back door to the house slides open, and we all stop to look at the new visitor.

"Father...?" a tiny voice calls out.

"Oh, if it isn't our Princess!" Joshua says with a smile.

"Is...it okay?"

"Sure is. Come on over."

The little girl closes the door behind her and then jogs towards Joshua. She reaches upwards, and he reaches down to pick her up, setting her into his lap.

"This is our daughter, Alexandra," Joshua announces with a proud smile. "But just like the wife, we call her Aria."

"Josh named her, too," Cadence says. "He's sure got a way with names, huh?"

"Certainly. Aria is a lovely name for any child," I say with my own smile. "She's precious."

Aria bows her head politely as thanks. Her blonde hair is light and fluffy, just a little wild looking, and mirroring the shape and length of her mother's. In fact, they look very much alike. Their blue eyes are the same brightness, with the difference being that Aria's are normally halfway closed. She is calm and very quiet, sitting patiently with her hands in her lap. The blue dress she wears has two pockets and thick straps over her shoulders.

"You feel comfortable talking about that part, Cadence?" Joshua asks.

"It's fine. Might as well, right? I'm sure Shino there would have more questions after seeing Aria," she replies.

"Damn. Looks like that subtlety of yours is already legendary," Yuna says with a laugh.

"I don't believe it was that bad. We were all thinking it," he says defensively.

"I wasn't," I say.

"I wasn't either," Hina says.

"..." He pushes up his glasses and says nothing else.

"Aria's my daughter, but as you can see...she doesn't look a thing like my husband. I had her when I was younger. Still a teenager, actually. It wasn't something that was supposed to happen, really," Cadence says. "But I...didn't feel like I could say no. Even if I ended up consenting to it, everything felt wrong. It was in a time and place where I thought I couldn't do anything else. My father was...he was trying to preserve the family's future, see. So he arranged a bunch of suitors and tried to keep Josh away from me. One of them, he...yeah. He took advantage of his position. It looks worse and worse the more you think about it. But ultimately, it was about Josh being from what he called a lower station, or basically being more of a commoner. I'm guessing you know about that sort of thing, Lili."

"Yes. My father was much the same. He wanted to marry me off as soon as I was of age, and actually sent me to become a shinobi so that I would be more disciplined by the time I was supposed to choose a man. My life would be spent bearing someone's children and wasting away in an empty mansion somewhere."

Cadence nods. "That's pretty much it, yeah. I know he loved me, and still does. But what he put me into, that sort of situation...it really, really hurt. It honestly broke me, and I started to spin downwards into depression. Kept it all bottled up for a while, but that just made it worse. And when I found out I was pregnant, I thought my life was over."

"But you got your happy ending," Yuna says.

"I did." Cadence smiles and takes Joshua's hand in hers, watching him smile back. "I thought this guy would drift away from me when he found out what happened. But not only did he accept me, and whatever might have happened afterwards...he accepted Aria, too. He was there when she was born, and he helped me raise her. People talked about both of us. About how damaged I was, and how weak it looked for a man to take care of someone else's child. Dad wanted to find someone to make sure that I was taken care of, so that I didn't have to endure those things that shamed us both. And then Josh turned around and said that he'd take care of me, no matter how much he had to give up. I had always loved him...but that moment was the one that made me want to be by his side forever."

"How beautiful," Hina says.

"A family built on love and hope. Coming from different places and walks of life...none of that matters in the face of pure bonds," I say. "It really is beautiful to see. I'm glad that you both came out of it okay."

"Thanks for saying that. Everything that's happened, good and bad...it came together and created all of this. As long as we love each other, we can do anything we set our minds to. I really believe that in the wake of all that darkness, that one thing will help us pull the world back together."

"An understanding of peace requires the experience of pain, you think. Not just to test the limits of the world's saviours, but to provide understanding. To show us that things are possible, no matter how hard it is to travel down those paths."

"Yeah. There's something to be said about things...born from what we once called tragedies. You know?"

"I know what you mean," I say, thinking of Rose.

"So. Did that answer why the kid doesn't look like she's his?" Yuna says to Shino smugly. "I bet you think Josh there got cu-"

"Yuna, not in front of Aria," Joshua says, frowning. "Seriously."

"What? Not like she'd know what it meant."

"Aria loves to flip through the dictionary before bed, just like her Papa used to," Cadence points out. "She'd find out before the end of the day, and then we'd have to explain too many things to her that she doesn't need to know yet. We can't have 'the talk' with her."

"Yeah. Five years old is just a bit early."

"..." Aria tilts her head back to look at Joshua.

"It's fine, sprout. Adult things."

She nods and takes a piece of broccoli to nibble on.

"Having a party over there?" a voice calls over the brick barrier.

"Close enough. Hey, Ma." Joshua sets Aria down, and she jogs over to open the door. Her tiny hands pull ropes that move the locks, and then reach up to get the door handle.

"Oh, look at Miss Muscles over here." The woman picks up Aria and kisses her gently. "Hey, kids. Sorry I wasn't at the office, long story."

"They told us you were missing some pieces."

"That's part of it, yeah." The woman who has just arrived has the same complexion as Joshua, and it's easy to tell that they're related from the other features they share. She wears a pinstriped suit, consisting of a blazer and slimming pants. A small black satchel loops over her right shoulder. Her hair is long and black, some resting on her shoulders with the rest pulled into a ponytail. She has brown eyes that are filled with the same confidence as her son's.

"Very nice to meet you, ma'am," I say to her.

"The same to you, miss." She nods to acknowledge me. "So, the famous Scarlet Viper herself. I have to admit, I was expecting you to be just a bit taller. But that's not a knock on you, it adds to the mystique."

"Right? That's what I was thinking," Joshua says.

"And of course, a pleasant afternoon to Miss Hyuuga and Mister Aburame there."

"Thank you, ma'am."

"Thank you."

"To formally introduce myself, my name is Maria Walker. I'm the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Iron Country. Joshua is my son, and Catherine is my daughter. Aria is my first grandchild, of many to come."

Joshua sighs. "Ma..."

"We're working on that last part," Cadence says, giggling.

"You can't blame me for getting hooked," Maria says as she rubs Aria's cheek.

"Have yourself a seat, Ma. We were digging into Auntie Park's ribs."

"Sounds nice...but I can't stay for too long, unfortunately."

"I'll fix a plate to take with you," Cadence says as she gets up. "Can't go leaving family hungry. Be right back."

"Thanks, sweetie. But yeah, I got the message that you took the Leaf visitors up here and figured you guys were getting them fed. Just popped by to do some simple business and deliver a little message of my own," Maria says. She hands Aria back to Joshua.

"Shall we make the exchange now, then?" I ask.

"If you're okay with it."

"More than okay. Hina, Shino."

"Ma'am," they say in unison. I bring out the main scroll while Hina and Shino provide smaller ones. Each is a different colour, mine red on the outside edges while theirs are blue and black respectively. Maria scribbles a set of codes on the outside of each scroll before putting them into her satchel. She then takes out a single scroll that is grey and has inscriptions on the outside in gold lettering.

"Here you go. Check if anything is off."

I catch the scroll as she tosses it to me, and look along the outside of it.

"This is wrong."

"Eh?" Yuna says.

"Excellent." Maria takes out another, normal looking scroll and tosses it to me next. I unroll the first scroll, sign it at the top, and then toss it back to her. She puts it into her bag and sighs. "Now this? This I like. Always nice to work with skilled people."

"I will never understand the weird bullshit you security types get up to," Yuna says, shaking her head.

"They have courses for that, you know."

"Smartass. Lucky that you're Josh's mom. And that you could probably kick my ass...that helps. A little," she mutters.

"Heh. My second message was for Miss Kobayashi. The General himself wants to hold court with you."

I raise a brow. "Really. Whatever for?"

"Wouldn't say. Hush-hush, even for him."

"Mm."

"It shouldn't be anything too serious or intrusive, but...I have a feeling that he and Lord Sarutobi had a talk about it beforehand. Whatever the reason, I'll be nearby. Just in case, of course."

"Here you go, Mom." Cadence returns and hands a plate covered with foil to Maria. "Business done already?"

"Yep. Just mentioning that Mifune wanted to see the Captain over there."

"Ooh. Mysterious."

"Yep. We'll talk one more time before you leave the country proper, just to tie down any loose ends. Until then, stay safe and enjoy the hospitality."

"We shall, Madam Walker. It was lovely meeting you," I say with a smile.

"Likewise," she says with her own smile back. She kisses her son, daughter, and granddaughter on the cheeks firmly before waving on her way out. "Take care, y'all."

"See you, Mom." Cadence locks up after her before returning to the table. "You wouldn't believe it, but she's got a pretty heavy nickname herself."

"Scary Mary," Joshua says. "I've only ever seen it come out when she's in work mode. But, uh...yeah. It's accurate."

"Names have power in this world of ours. The ability to create and shape them is crucial...whether it is to bring hope to the masses, or deliver terror to one's enemies," I say.

"Sounds pretty chunni if you ask me," Yuna says.

"You haven't seen anything yet," Shino quips. Still salty about earlier, huh.

"Truly, would you expect anything less of the woman known as the great terror of men, chosen of heaven, Crimson Nightmare and avatar of death itself?" I declare dramatically. "I stand above the children of men, and possess the power to bring forth a new, prosperous age."

"Spicy," Cadence says. Aria claps happily.

"I knew you shinobi could get weird sometimes, but this is on another level entirely. Oi," Yuna says.

"You do get used to it. And it's charming, in many ways," Hina says with a smile. "The stories some of the elders tell about Lord Hashirama suggest that he was liberated in his own manner."

Well, she's not wrong about that. The Founder might have been more chunni than me, if what I saw of him was any indication.

"And that guy pretty much changed the world," Joshua says. "There might be something to that, then. Too bad that he died before he could accomplish what he wanted to. Wonder what the world would have been like if he stuck around long enough to beat his enemies into the dirt properly."

"Bah. I dunno if I could stomach the thought of a world run by shinobi," Yuna says. "No offence meant to you guys, but their ideals have been pretty trash for a while now. Not to mention the whole jinchuuriki thing. Putting monsters into kids so that they can be used as weapons...and on top of that, not even recognizing that sacrifice, treating them like garbage. Who the hell could stand something like that?"

"It is something quite hard to take," I say.

"How's the host in your village doing?" Joshua asks me. "I mean, if that's not too much to talk about."

"That is quite fine. I'm actually close friends with that person, and they're doing quite well at the moment. Though there was a long stretch of time where it was not so."

"Good to hear. Yeah, that whole tailed beast thing is messed up. I understand why they do it, but...that among other things really sours people's views on shinobi. The way the system is held up, the lust for power and influence...not to say that the samurai are perfect. I mean, samurai did and still do leave their craft behind to become shinobi, or even just bodyguards for criminal enterprises because it pays so much more. Probably gonna need a big shock to start the ball rolling on a new world."

"..." I think on it for a moment. "What kind of person do you think would be needed? What kind of choices would they have to make, do you think?"

"Hmm..." Joshua closes his eyes and thinks. "Someone with a strong will...and one who was willing to become the enemy of the world itself. A person who would deny the dreams of others to lead everyone and everything forward into a new future. Not one void of pain and suffering, but..."

"A world of possibilities."

He opens his eyes to look at me. "Yeah. That's exactly right, Lili."

"I see."

"But that path shouldn't be walked alone, should it?" Hina asks.

"It shouldn't be. I think it would be too much for any one person to take. It's like Cadence said before, love is the power that allows us to do anything. And a strong love is what's needed to give a person the strength to change the world, without falling to pieces in the process."

Hina nods.

"Lili...where are you headed at the end of all this?" Joshua asks me.

"I want to become the flame that lights the way."

"Hokage...I see. That's all I needed to hear," Joshua says.

"We're gonna be winding up some stuff of our own," Cadence adds in. "So hopefully, we'll see you on the other side."

"I don't know what the hell any of you are talking about, but whatever. Me an' Kitsune are all in with you crazy fools, no matter what," Yuna says.

Joshua smiles and nods. "Appreciate that, partner."

"Kitsune?" Shino asks.

"That's the name of her sword!" Cadence says.

"You name your swords. Hm. Seems like you were projecting earlier." Well, he's gotten sassy all of a sudden. Covering for his earlier embarrassment, no doubt.

Yuna slaps her hand on the table. "Oi. Kitsune is a Meito. A Me-i-to. Show some goddamn respect, you plebeian. Fuckin' shinobi, don't know anything about anything..."

"Yuna gets touchy about that particular subject. But yeah, famous and well-crafted swords have names. Incidentally, the city shares a name with General Mifune's sword, Kurosawa," Joshua explains. "I wasn't carrying it on me today, but my personal sword's one of them. Its name is Shippu. Some swords may or may not have special abilities embedded in them, but all of them have fantastic sharpness and durability."

"I see."

"You were definitely right about names having power, it's been that way for a very long time. We name weapons and other tools, and in this world of chakra and all, it means we can make miracles with each movement."

"Such as the Kusanagi, you mean."

"Yeah. That one's super legendary. Heard it could cut through anything."

"Some war criminal probably has it." Yuna shrugs. "What can you do."

"..." Hm. She was right about that, at least for a time. Well, I can keep the knowledge that Midori has it to myself. For now, at least.

"You guys ate up a storm, and that makes me super happy!" Cadence says. She claps her hands and stands up. "Okay! Who's ready for dessert? I've got apple pie, cake, ice cream, yogurt, cupcakes..."

"You trying to kill us, woman?" Yuna says. "Because it just might work, dammit. I want apple pie and ice cream."

"Father...share some cake?" Aria asks.

"Sure. We'll have some ice cream to go with it, okay?"

She smiles and nods. "Okay."

"Nothing for me," Shino says. "Unless you have winter melon in stock..."

"Mm?" Cadence tilts her head sideways. "Winter...melon...? Hm..."

"What's the matter? Aren't you going to tell her it's an acquired taste?" I ask smugly.

Shino takes a glance at Cadence and clears his throat nervously.

"Tea...is fine."

Joshua snickers in the background, with Hina and I joining him.

---

We had planned to make our way to a hotel with Yuna, since she was heading out for the night. Cadence wouldn't hear a word of it.

"Nope. Nope nope nope. You're staying right here and getting a good night's sleep, all three of you!"

The one-sided argument involved her showing us to the available guest rooms, and offering up more space if necessary. Hina and I have decided to share one room, with Shino getting a room to himself. I realize now the reason why such a small family would have such a large home: for gatherings and to accommodate as many guests overnight as they could. It fits them perfectly, at least.

Yuna agrees to meet us again in the morning, for a freshly cooked breakfast of course. We bid her good night and get ready for bed. I'm already full thanks to a lovely dinner and delicious dessert.

"Did you want to go in together?" Hina asks me.

"Yes, I would like that. Wait a bit for me, and I'll join you."

She nods and wraps a towel around herself before heading into the bathroom. I get myself undressed and do the same before following. We sit and take turns washing each others' backs before rinsing off and finally getting into the tub together. It's comfortably warm and feels wonderful after a long day.

"Ah...that's good."

"It really is," Hina says across from me.

"Have you been okay so far?" I ask.

"Yes. What about you, Lili? Are you nervous about your meeting tomorrow?"

"A little, to be honest. Even if the old man has the best of intentions...I have to wonder what the samurai general's angle is here. What could he want from me?"

"Well...I might sound a bit out of it for saying such a thing. But you might have too low an estimation of yourself at this moment, Lili."

I give her an amused look. "Out of it, you say. It must be so. Most would call you utterly mad for saying such a thing. Lilith Kobayashi, lacking confidence. But you might be right. Perhaps tales of my legend have spread further than I realized. Not just name and deed, but something beyond that. Mifune...a man who earned his legend in a time of strife, just like many shinobi we speak of in history books."

"Looking at it another way, it might also be a good learning experience."

"Hm. I wonder how much he will give away to someone so young. I suppose the only thing to do is wait until tomorrow. Worrying about it will do me no favours." I sigh and run a wet hand through my hair. "Hina...might I ask you something?"

"Of course, Lili. What is it?"

"You followed the conversation between Joshua and I quite easily. About...becoming the world's enemy, if I should want it to change for the better."

"Yes."

"You have so much to live and strive for. You have a family that is coming together around you and someone that you love dearly, have loved dearly for such a long time, finally recognizing you for the beauty that you are."

"Yes..."

"Hina...to throw all of that away, just to follow me down a bloodstained path. It's not...I appreciate you more than anything, but I couldn't let you do that. I couldn't let you give up everything, just to support me."

"I know how you feel. I understand it, Lili," she says. "But...you must know my answer."

"..."

"And the reason, above all else...is because you gave me everything. And so, I would put everything on the line for your sake, for your dream. For the possibilities that you want to create with your own strength. Perhaps, if I let everything go, if I kept a safe distance once the struggle started, then I could live a comfortable life with everyone and everything that I've worked for. And you would never resent me for that choice. I know it."

"And still..."

"You rejected the world just to save me. You ignored everything that was said about me...you even ignored the weakness that I showed you. You changed me. It's only right, that in my heart, I give my all towards supporting you. I believe in you," she says with a smile. "I believe in the irreplaceable love that you poured into my heart. That's why, even if the world burns to nothing, and I lose everything...I will be by your side. As your sister, and precious friend."

"I see now. I did expect that answer. But it touched my heart in ways I never anticipated, Hina."

"I'm glad to hear that."

"Yes. It seems my resolve is strengthened once more...I will continue to ascend, and make it so that you won't have to suffer in this world of ours. Your dreams and your possibilities will be protected. There is no other choice than to change this world. I will make it so."

"Good."

"The first step begins tomorrow. I will hear what the samurai of legend has to impart on me."

Changing the world. Changing shinobi...what it means to be one. The concept of borders, of barriers and distance. Of enemies and of hatred. The cycles of darkness. Of what it means to heal and renew.

"World Serpent..."

"That was what Fubuki Inugami called you, wasn't it?" Hina asks.

"Yes, it was."

"I don't quite understand what it means, even now."

"On another continent, there is a legend of a serpent that grew so large it encircled the Earth, and could place its own tail in its mouth. Thus, this creature came to be known as the World Serpent. It is said that once the serpent decides to release its tail from its jaws, the end of the world will draw nigh."

"The end of the world...it's quite ominous."

"Indeed. Senpai was one who recognized my strength, far beyond what was visible on the battlefield. To call me such a name was far from an insult...it was an understanding of the chaos that I have the potential to bring, even now. I will grow, Hina. My terror will come to encircle this world of shinobi, and soon I will decide to release mine tail from mine jaws, causing untold calamity. The Earth will tremble, and those who think themselves gods of the new world will rise to try and stop me."

"What do you think will happen afterwards?"

"Something I've wondered myself...but I don't worry about it too much. The will of the heavens is not something to be immediately deciphered, certainly not by the children of men, and even the newly birthed agents of heaven such as I. As long as we move forward in earnest, towards a more perfect future...we will be provided for, my love."

Hina nods, determined. "Understood. Then I'll await your orders, Lili."

"Very good. Now, let's relax a few more minutes more before stepping out. We don't want to wrinkle up and wreak havoc on our skin."

Hina giggles at that. "Of course. We never should forget the little things."

"One more reason why I love you so much. You've learned well, Hina."

"Thank you kindly."

And with that, assured of our direction once more, we sink into a comfortable silence.

Keep in mind that Shinobi are actually fairly passive in the modern era. Concentrating them deep in their territories worked, mostly. The villages mean that Shinobi aren't the defacto government for most of the continent and spend more time fortifying and improving than starting border wars because the next clan over had a better harvest this year.

In exchange for managing the territory the nobles/government of the great nations, and presumably many of the lesser ones, got a lot of money, and through that money the power and influence to shape how and why Shinobi are deployed.

So keep in mind that there are other players in the current system, even if they tend to work in less concrete terms.

Keep in mind that Shinobi are actually fairly passive in the modern era.
This is good insight and something that stories (including this one) are at risk of losing track of, if it's not completely ignored in the bigger picture. From what I've read in the past, whether it's out of ignorance or maybe just to spite the original author in one way or another, endings tend to just erase the shinobi and their influence then declare global issues mostly solved.

But then stuff like that isn't terribly juicy to write about compared to immediate interpersonal drama, or any sort of tribal conflict that you can then extrapolate to a bigger scale.

That's only part of the equation, Josh. You'll also need a hero who can unite the world to fight against this enemy.

Evoke
Scarlet Justice - ep. 132
"Evoke"
[Golden Rust: Feature 2]
---

I awaken at the usual time, which is to say much earlier than most people. My nose picks up the scent of frying eggs and pork. This has to be Cadence, devoted wife that she is. But then, Joshua also seems to be the type of person to wake up early so that he can pamper his beloved.

With a gentle movement, I leave Hina's warm embrace and roll out of bed. I take care of my hair and then my face, brush my teeth, and apply a bit of makeup so that I look presentable for my meeting.

"All done. Let's get dressed and start the day."

I wink at my reflection before leaving the bathroom and getting dressed. Once I finish pulling on my socks, I head out of the room and down the hall towards the kitchen.

"I just feel 'rhythm emotion'~"

That's definitely our hostess. She's in front of the stove with a pair of headphones on, singing away while cooking. A good amount of food has already been made, and is being kept warm in the meantime.

"Good morning, Miss Cadence."

"Mornin'. You're an early riser too, eh?" she says with a smile.

"Yes, indeed. This is part of my routine in the Leaf," I reply as I sit down at the table.

"Good for you, getting an early start on the day is always a blessing. Want some tea? The kettle's nice and hot. Breakfast will be a few more minutes if you wanted to wait, otherwise I can fix you a plate right now."

"I should be fine with tea while I wait. One sugar is all I need."

"Got it. Just a moment, hon." She twirls towards the kettle and picks it up, pouring water into a waiting mug and dipping in a tea bag at the same time. The mug is delivered on a saucer, and she plucks out the bag before stirring in a small spoon of sugar.

"Give it a taste, yeah?"

I take a sip and nod with satisfaction. "Delicious. Thank you so much."

"No problem! Our sleepy heads should be up soon...no way could they resist the smell of breakfast for much longer."

I watch Cadence toss the bag into a small bin before bouncing back to her workstation. There are a great number of questions I could ask her...how she could be so energetic in the mornings, how happy she is or isn't as a woman, why someone like her would choose to be a housewife instead of anything else. It sounded like she could have had the world. But...I also know better. That one person's chains can easily be another's emergency rope. That the measure of a woman is not how liberated she is compared to her peers. That love and devotion can take many forms, and that there is a fine line between what the world sees as acceptable and unhealthy.

The conviction she displays in her words and actions...that is the story I have decided to read thus far. And it has been more than enough. I hope one day that I can be as wonderful a mother and friend.

"Morning, y'all. Time to get the day started, at last."

"Mornin', hon." Joshua and Cadence share a long kiss. "Breakfast is just about ready."

"Cool. I'll make myself some coffee. Ah, we got another early bird," he says with a smile towards me. "Good on you. More time in the day to plot your world conquest."

I laugh lightly. "I suppose so. I did have a wonderful sleep, so thank you very much for that."

"Hey, nothing to it. We always want to treat our guests right."

"Yep. Nothing like some good old hospitality to warm the soul," Cadence says.

"Mother, Father. Good morning."

"Good morning, sugar!"

"Morning, Aria." She hugs both of her parents before stopping near me and bowing.

"Good morning, Miss Lili."

"Good morning, darling." I gently pat her head and she smiles. "Did you have a good sleep?"

"Yes, thank you. Father is very warm."

"Yes, fathers are very much like that. That's what makes them the absolute best. Cherish your Papa, okay?"

"I will, Miss Lili."

"Good girl."

"And the last two arrive! Welcome to breakfast!" Joshua announces. Hina and Shino make their appearances and sit on opposite sides of me. Cadence makes them each a mug of tea, and Joshua sits down with Aria in his lap.

"A big breakfast for growing boys and girls! And one that'll make you wanna clean your plate to a shine, or my name ain't Cadence Walker!"

Certainly, the plates are weighty and filled with food. Eggs, ham and at least two types of bacon. Thick bread and leafy greens, tomatoes, and sausage. There's sweet bread in there, too. I know that she didn't get up too much earlier than I did, so how did she make so much food so quickly? Well...I don't mind too much, since I will be devouring all of this promptly, as she noted.

A knock on the front door interrupts us.

"I'll grab that. Gotta be Yuna," Cadence says as she wipes her hands on a towel. We wait patiently as the door opens and the two women have a quick conversation. Yuna comes into view and takes the empty seat with a sigh, while Cadence makes her a cup of coffee.

"Mornin', guys. Ugh...rough trip the way up. I drew a rookie driver this time."

"Happens from time to time," Joshua says. "At least you're up, and not motion sick."

"Yeah, but those rides are always a bit worse if I don't have my coffee first. Maybe next time I'll come on foot again. It's not that much hassle." Cadence sets down the coffee and a plate of food in front of Yuna. "Fuck's sake, woman. You're lucky I love working out."

"You're welcome, sweetie."

"Time to dig in, y'all. Bless this food and the most beautiful cook in the world," Joshua says. At that, we start our breakfast. It is absolutely delicious, as I expected. We get refills of our tea as requested, and for myself, I get to drink a few glasses of milk.

"So, any changes to the agenda?" Joshua asks Yuna.

"Nothing on my end. What about you?"

"Nothing. Gonna take Lili here out to meet the General as planned. Shouldn't be any hassle and Ma is gonna be around. I'll likely be idling while they have their meeting."

"Sounds good. I guess we'll be down at the government building getting some stuff done. Not really clear on what it was, though."

"The mission instructions include cooperation with regards to regional matters," Hina says. "We have documents with extra data that we intend to share with the Iron Country in order to help deal with rogue elements, and other uncategorized problems such as Akatsuki, as mentioned before."

"Some cross referencing," I add. "Standard bingo book updates as well, based on what we have and the information we have on the versions in other nations."

"Ah, right. I keep forgetting the shinobi countries have different bingo books," Joshua says.

"Eh? How come? It would make sense to have a universal one, so that you can all cooperate and stuff, right?" Cadence asks as she collects our empty plates.

"There are some entries that are universally known, usually S-Class shinobi that pose an immediate threat to all nations," I reply. "But the majority of entries involve internal issues that need to be taken care of, and enemy shinobi of other nations that pose considerable threats. An example to illustrate my point. Do you know of Sharingan Kakashi?"

"Yep. The man of a thousand jutsu, great hero of the Third Shinobi War. Known as a legend all over, and I don't think he's even hit mid-life yet," Joshua says.

"Yes. Now obviously, he would not be listed in the bingo book for the Hidden Leaf, since he is one of their soldiers, and a loyal elite at that."

"But he would be a target of say, Hidden Cloud. Since he's from a foreign army...they can put a bounty on his head as a powerful rival."

"Correct. And these are just the official books used by the villages. Some organizations have their own personal black books used to eliminate their own targets. Information is gathered on those as well, and their entries are added or removed from official listings depending on the situation. But suffice it to say that a universal bingo book shared by multiple nations is not something that will happen any time soon. If it were to happen, the information shared would be very carefully curated so as not to reveal secrets that would compromise national security."

"So...if someone gets themselves listed in more than one bingo book, the official ones at least, it probably means that the country they're from is giving the green light to hunt them down," Yuna says.

"It's a possible scenario. I believe that Lord Hokage said a truly international threat would facilitate the creation of a special joint task force, with representatives from each concerned nation. As far as just collecting bounties...the target merely has to be delivered to the country where the bounty is listed in order to collect. A new and significant bingo book target, that is to say, a missing-nin, is more than likely known within a few weeks due to the existence of spies and the like."

"Hm. Makes sense, I guess."

"Okay. Let's get going for the day. I'll grab Shippu from the blade room and meet y'all out front," Joshua says.

"Want me to call a ride over?" Cadence asks.

"Would be swell if you did that. Thank you kindly. Let's go, Aria. We're gonna make sure our friend is awake today."

"Yes, Father."

"Will you be okay with the dishes?" I ask Cadence.

"Just fine, honey. But thank you for asking. You all get going to work, I'll see you later. Probably gonna be fish for dinner, unless something comes up."

"We'll catch you then, Sunshine," Yuna says. "Everyone else, make sure you're packed and ready. Hinata and Shino will be with me as we discussed, Lili there will be heading out with Josh. So if you've got any notes you need to pass around, do that before we split."

"Are there any extra instructions?" Shino asks me.

"None. Follow what we've gone over before, and pay attention for any abnormalities if they should arise. There should be no immediate danger if you do spot something, so we can come together for a report later on to discuss things if need be," I say to him.

"I'm assuming your conversation with the General will be private in nature," Hina says.

"It seems so. I was not instructed to prepare for such a meeting, so the dispensation of details will be at my discretion. If the old man wants to know what was said, he has a working voice box."

She nods. "I think that works for our purposes. It is you, after all."

"Quite. Yuna, we should be ready now."

"Great. Let's head out and wait for Josh."

The four of us walk out to the front porch and wait as mentioned. Two of the rickshaw similar to yesterday's arrive, and Yuna heads out to meet with the drivers to see where they're going.

"All set," Joshua says as he emerges. The changes from yesterday are a black cap on his head and a new katana on his side, sealed within a metallic blue scabbard. The handle is wrapped in a deeper blue colour, with the traditional diamond pattern appearing. And the scabbard itself is adorned with symbols and markings that I don't recognize at a glance. This must be Shippu, the great blade that is part of an exclusive hierarchy in the world of weapons.

"The one up front is heading where you want to go," Yuna says to Joshua. "See you in a while, then."

"Yep. Take care of yourself, partner. Try to keep busy," he says with a smile.

"No promises." They bump fists and part ways, with our group splitting in the same way. I sit next to Joshua and the rickshaw starts on its way. Yuna, Hina, and Shino eventually head towards Kurosawa Port, while Joshua and I continue outwards, further through the city outskirts.

"About a half hour ride at this speed. There's a train connection, too. Takes a while to spin up though because of security," Joshua says.

"I see. Is this where General Mifune usually stays?"

"Most of the year, yeah. Doesn't have much in the way of relatives, no immediate family. He's pretty free to move where he wants and just stay at work, or train, whatever he feels like. Intense guy when he gets into something, but otherwise he's chill. Likes to dispense wisdom and all that."

"Have you learned a lot from him?"

"Plenty. We used to have sessions, mostly about historical readings and the like. Swords too, of course. Huge sword buff, but that only makes sense, right? Guy can build his own, too. Some of them sell as art pieces and the money goes to certain causes, or just people down on their luck every so often. He says the process is zen. I get it, honestly."

"Hm. So you have a great deal of respect for him."

"Without a doubt. Of course, between us both...Yuna's his favourite."

I look at him with surprise. "You don't say."

"She's really, really good with her sword. Like, next level good. Her stances, her positioning, everything. The only reason she's not higher up in the ranks is because she finds it a hassle. And as much as she snarks at the General for being old and traditional and stuff, she's a pretty big fan of his. Again, don't tell anyone. She does her best not to melt every time he praises her."

"I see...it's not stunning that she would have a more tender side, but I didn't figure on her being the General's darling."

"Heh. Every so often he calls her up to do demonstrations," Joshua says as we pass through a grassy field. "So that people can see what the ideal form looks like. Though she doesn't like bragging about it too much. Yuna knows how to be modest, sometimes at least."

"Mm." I do still have a complex about such things, but...becoming a teacher is more appealing to me now. More than something that I need as a stepping stone for my development, I can make a bit more out of it and start a culture change. The question is what kind of teaching I want to do...but I should be able to figure that out in time.

"Should be coming up just ahead. Big old place. Nice interior, though."

It's a castle, in the traditional style. A massive fortress with several buildings and pent roofs, stacked on top of each other. I can see the defensive features, such as the moat, and the many openings that take the form of squares, rectangles, and the like. These are for the archers and various long range attackers to retaliate without exposing themselves to enemy fire needlessly. The structure has a black exterior, and if what Joshua said was correct, the age of this structure means that it is mostly made of stone and wood. Though there should be materials like plaster and the like in strategic places to prevent enemies from burning everything to the ground easily. We pass by the outer walls and then exit our transport, with Joshua paying the driver before sending him on his way.

"Ma can get the train ready for our trip back," he says as we walk towards the inner gate. Two samurai in their white armour and helmets salute Joshua, who salutes back. One of them passes a message along on his radio before waving the two of us through, and we move towards the inside of the castle. As I imagined, there are pristine wooden floors and many wood pillars in the open space. Many hallways, of course. A castle is simply not a castle without a maze of passages to traverse.

"Major Walker. Good morning to you."

"Good morning, Minister. Awaiting your orders."

Maria nods towards us. Today her hair is wrapped in a neat bun, secured by an elegant decorative comb. She wears a black kimono with silver edges to it, the sleeves just barely covering her hands. Beneath the silver sash on her waist, there is a wakizashi, a type of sword smaller than a katana and commonly carried for protection.

"I would like you to wait until the end of Captain Kobayashi's meeting in order to escort her home. A room has been prepared for your use."

"Thank you." An attendant appears nearby and bows before leading Joshua off.

"Please follow me."

"Yes, ma'am." Maria leads me down one of the long hallways and through a series of paths. There aren't any obvious signposts, so I can only assume that it's purely memory used to go back and forth between the General's room and everywhere else. Or, at least I assumed as such...but the increase in people is telling me something else. There are men and women walking through this hallway with towels and cleaning equipment, and the scents coming my way are light and pleasant...the kinds that come from perfumes and soaps in the bath. Hm, so there wasn't anything complicated after all. We must be going to a training facility for our meeting. I have to wonder why. No matter. I can go back to more important matters for now...mm. Maria does have a lovely figure, doesn't she. It's too bad this is mostly a business trip and our time is limited...

"Minister Walker, ma'am. Welcome." A woman with swirling orange hair in a white kimono bows to us. "And a good morning to you as well, Captain Kobayashi of the Leaf."

"Thank you, Natsumi."

"Thank you," I say with my own bow.

"General Mifune is inside the training area and ready to begin."

"Good. Come inside and make sure the door is sealed. Hold your position there until instructed otherwise."

"Yes, ma'am. Ready to execute."

Natsumi pulls apart the double doors and Maria leads me further inside. The training area has the same wooden floors as the rest of this castle, a wide open space that admits light through its windows and the ceiling above our heads. While the floors are smooth and polished properly, the walls bear clear signs of work and struggle over many years. Cuts and gouges, some cracking outwards from various impacts, scorch marks and deep grooves. Upon closer inspection, even the smooth floors are not completely erased of past sessions. Is this a place with a deep history? Or just somewhere to set the tone of this meeting?

"..."

Then again, perhaps I have been too wrapped up in my own knowledge of the shinobi world. Looking for layers that were never there. Mifune brought me here because he wants to test me physically. The reasons for that are a mystery, but I can afford to oblige him. If only because the old man gave him the okay.

"Lilith Kobayashi, is it not?" The elderly man approaches us from the other end of the room, clad in a set of purple robes with his katana on his hip.

"Yes, sir," I say to him. I bow politely and he extends his hand for me to take. We shake firmly.

"You are already aware of me, but I must properly introduce myself to you. I am Mifune, the general of the samurai forces and leader of the Iron Country. It has been a long time since I have met with an elite of the Hidden Leaf, and it is my honour to receive you today."

"Thank you very much." I bow again and take a practiced step backwards to be polite. From here, I can see him properly again. His head is wrapped all the way around with bandage; it might be an aesthetic choice, or to hide a head wound of some sort. His hair is long and grey, which only makes sense considering his age. He must be around the same age as Hiruzen, if I had to guess. He also has a long goatee and a moustache that reminds me of bicycle handlebars. A distinguished looking gentleman...everything about him is neat and clean, but without dipping into pretension. Years of practice and discipline have resolved to this. It's impressive.

"Have you surmised why we are meeting here?" he asks.

"I have, sir."

"Good. Please, take the time to prepare yourself, and signal when you are ready to begin. Kurosawa and I will be waiting patiently."

"Yes. Thank you, sir."

"Maria, if you would stand watch for us."

"Of course, sir." She bows her head before moving a safe distance away, standing at the midpoint between us. I shake out my hands and bounce on my feet lightly. Mifune stands quietly across from me, hands at his sides.

"..."

He's looking for something. What, though...how should I fight him? How should I respond to this sort of challenge? There are a few options, but the correct ones stand out more than the others. The old man agreed to have Mifune meet me...and last night we were just talking about convictions and the like. Strength and courage to move forward.

"If I had to make a proper guess...you want to see what he sees in me."

That old legend. The story of how I went up against one of the Three Shinobi in Orochimaru. Echoes of that great feat, going through history. I see it now. So I have to gather myself, and then at the point of no return...make the correct choice to surge ahead. He'll probably use iai to attack first. Of this, we are both aware.

So. What will I do to counter that sort of technique?

I raise my hand into the air, and Mifune nods in response. His left hand goes to his scabbard, and the right to his blade's handle.

"Ready," Maria calls out.

We stare each other down, my hands at my sides. Speed...that's my advantage. I'll make use of it to pass this little test.

"Begin."

Mifune tears across the room at the first twitch of my hands, moving at a fantastic speed himself. I start to weave the four seals I need, and he's already on me, ready to draw.

"That won't work, shinobi!"

I know that full well. But I'm the sort of person that can make the impossible possible. The title of heaven's chosen isn't just for show. Mifune draws at high speed and I'm only halfway through my sequence. The blade comes for my hands, and it would be to my benefit to stop and reset. But I won't.

"!"

I lean backward before rocking forward quickly, feeling something cool touch my cheek as the sword sails by my head. The final seals are completed as Mifune completes his swing and starts to pull his arm back.

"Mobius, Type Four: Aegis!"

I take a hard step and slam my open palm into his chest, sending him flying backwards with blue sparks trailing him. He quickly recovers as his feet hit the ground, and I've already completed another set of seals-

"Hold!"

"?" I stop my technique as Mifune sheathes his blade, raising his hands in the air.

"That should be more than enough. Thank you. I have seen all that I needed to see. Maria, please tend to Miss Kobayashi's wound."

"Yes, sir." Maria comes towards me, then wipes at my cheek with a cloth before gently pressing her hand against it. The cut that I could barely feel earlier is now gone. Not much in the way of blood, either. It says a lot about the sword's sharpness.

"Lili is fine if you would like, sir," I say to Mifune as he approaches again.

"I see. As you wish, Lili Kobayashi. We will have further discussion in my office. Maria, if you could lead the way."

"Of course, sir. Did you want me to handle the tea?" she asks.

"No, no. Such a distinguished guest deserves nothing less than my full attention."

"Understood. You're not going to cook, though."

"Hm." He thinks on that a bit. "I suppose it would not be prudent to do so at this time."

She gives him a smug look. "Great minds do think alike at times, sir. I'll bring something for you both from the kitchen after you're settled. Please, follow me. Natsumi, you're dismissed after this. Please return to your regular duties."

"Yes, ma'am."

The doors are opened once more, and the three of us head through the castle together.

"If you need me, I'll be in the conference room as always."

Maria takes away our plates and utensils, stacking them onto a wooden tray. She nods towards Mifune before heading out, closing the door behind her.

After a delicious meal, the old general moves to pour us both tea. We sit across from each other in two comfortable chairs, his desk in the background with a large window behind it. Today's skies are just a bit grey.

"Before we begin, I must thank you for accepting my invitation. It certainly was sudden, and I would have understood if you had reservations about meeting with me so suddenly," Mifune says.

"It was no trouble at all. I do know that Lord Hokage doesn't do these things without reason. A moment of my time can be spared, especially for those of your status," I reply.

"Hm. You are quite eloquent for someone of your age."

"I have been told as much. That can be attributed to various influences...though I am capable of speaking plainly enough, depending on circumstances."

"I see. Very interesting to note." He takes a sip of tea from his cup. "Your father was an executive at Kobayashi Rice Corporation, as I recall."

"That is correct, yes. He passed on a few months prior to this. Our relationship was...slightly strained at the time of his departure," I say carefully. "Even so, his death left a sizable mark on me."

"I see. My condolences for your loss."

"I appreciate that. Thank you."

"So you have an understanding of society's upper stratum, as well as the insights of those called shinobi in this world. It is a rare and important perspective to have. With that all said, I would like to ask you a question."

"Of course. Ask whatever you might desire, General."

"Thank you. What is your understanding of the shinobi's measure of power?" he asks.

An interesting question to ask me. After testing my convictions, perhaps there is something more he seeks?

"Many times it has been said that the strength of a shinobi is the strength of the village, and the strength of the village is the strength of the nation. All said, each shinobi cultivates strength within themselves, then the strength of each shinobi is collectivized by way of military organization. More strong shinobi means more power in the hands of the state. A stronger state then has more leverage, and more of a means to impose their will. In like manner...inferior shinobi organized into a collective force are weaker than the desired average. It means they are overtaken for missions, they are vulnerable to attack, and they are forced to take what they can get in negotiations. National strength decides what territories are defended and acquired. It decides treaties, it tips the hands of operatives, it limits what heinous crimes one nation can commit against another. But the single most important thing is the power of one. One shinobi, honed and refined to reach their greatest potential."

"Mm."

"To contrast, you and the people of this nation hold to the ideal of 'wa'. A peaceful unity, and what one might call conformity within a larger group. That message of harmony over selfish interests. Each person coming together to create a greater whole. Far from a suppression of movement and expression, it is simply asked that everyone and everything is considered as a group, as a larger thing. Those who move too far out of line for the sake of their own ambitions are corrected, either by peers or elders who understand the way. This concept is how the samurai function as elite units. They come together with understanding, unified tactics, and the ability to cover for one another in an instant. The need for all powerful personal techniques is non-existent; with technical competence and supreme physical conditioning, most opponents can be countered and suppressed without resorting to extreme means."

"I see. It's little wonder Sarutobi wanted me to meet you," Mifune says as he strokes his beard. "Your ability to see into things so quickly is truly impressive."

"You flatter me so. I am but a humble student of this age, at least for now. But yes, this is my understanding of the differences between our two worlds."

"And what place do you see for those differing strengths?" he asks. I take another sip of my tea and think for a few seconds more.

"That is to say...if I find one superior to the other."

"If you see fit to answer in that form."

"Each has their place. But to give a proper response, there is no reason that those who gather up personal strength, in the way of the shinobi, should discard their tradition instead of evolving it. Those who chase for greater ideals, and choose to risk themselves, will be able to harness their personal power for a greater good. In time, the personal strength within us will no longer be something left only to soldiers. Each person will be able to find a power for themselves, and apply it to their ideals."

"Would you not want to combine the two ideals? That of great personal power and a harmonious world?"

"I would not," I say. "It is something that would lead to great disaster in the future, and rob future children of the opportunity to discover themselves. The destructive potential of the past can be changed into something that does good, and on a global scale. Much in the way of blood has been shed moving towards this point. We cannot extinguish the flame out of a misguided sense of fairness and harmony. To throw everything away for a false peace, lurching towards the end of history...bluntly, that sort of talk disgusts me." I take a long sip of my tea after finishing.

"I see. You are a complex person, Lili Kobayashi. The reason for this meeting was to gain an understanding of the person that Sarutobi so admired and wished for me to meet. There is also something else. A familiarity, you might say."

"Who might I remind you of?" I ask, curious.

"You know of Lord Hanzo, I presume."

"Hanzo of the Salamander. Yes...that man who was the terror of the five great shinobi nations. A legend, one called a force of nature. Have you come upon him in your time on this earth?"

"I have. In fact, he was the man who gave me my greatest wound," Mifune says, pointing to his bandaged head. "Far from debilitating...but I have grown so used to wearing the bandages that they became part of my routine."

"I see. Well, it is a distinctive look."

He chuckles. "I have heard as much from young people like yourself."

"What was that man like? From your wording...it seemed like he had the same understanding of the world that I do, and possibly the same sorts of ideals."

"Lord Hanzo has been feared for a long time. Many decades, at the least. When I fought him, I was a much younger man. He defeated me, and I was poisoned. I was sure that I was going to die, but would accept it as long as my comrades were spared. In response, Lord Hanzo decided he was going to test me."

"Test?" I ask.

"He gave me the antidote to his potent poison, one that I would have never overcome on my own. There was no guarantee of my survival, and I am sure that he assumed me dead once he left. He honoured my final request, to leave my comrades be. And beyond that, he asked me for my name."

"Names carry great power in this world. He was moved by your courage, and so he chose to venerate you as a hero. This was the way he brought fame to the Sannin as well."

"Yes."

"The conviction you showed him allowed you to become the general of this land. A hero of great renown, and a leader that has guided his people safely into the future. Hanzo saw your gifts within a single moment...that choice you made to stand and fight, when all others had fled." I pause a moment. "That was what you were searching for in our exchange earlier."

"Yes, that is true." He sets down his tea on the table in front of us. "Iaido is a method used to draw as quickly as possible, and dispatch opponents in single strokes. Though powerful, it takes much in the way of effort to truly master. But it is a useful tool against those versed in the shinobi arts. Most techniques require the use of handseals. You understand where I am going with this."

"I do, yes."

"Stopping your movements in order to block is the wisest and most prudent move against such that type of swordsmanship. To continue on fearlessly is impressive in and of itself. But what struck me in our exchange was the way you avoided my blade in order to complete your technique, Lili Kobayashi. Not just recklessly moving forward, but confidently leveraging your abilities in order to face me down and succeed. Your movements were graceful and measured, and your timing was impeccable. To avoid my blade in the way you did requires many things all at once: talent, training, wisdom, and conviction. You are a rare sort, the type of person that comes so infrequently it may be called miraculous."

"To say that much..." I put my head down and try to hide my blushing. I have a high estimation of myself, yes, but to hear this samurai praise me so...it might be too much to take, even now.

"Well, that much is only fair. It is the reason why I wanted to speak with you in this setting."

"I-I see. But then...Hanzo has changed in the time that has passed, hasn't he?"

"Yes. The man that I revered and respected started to become a shell of his former self. He has become obsessed with protecting himself and safeguarding the power that he holds now, as the leader of the Hidden Rain. He has become reclusive, reportedly surrounded by body guards. His actions are shrouded in darkness every hour of the day. Because of this, we have heard of none of the legendary feats of his heyday. Lord Hanzo...as a person, he has surely become dulled and blunted by now."

"Dull..."

Mifune takes a sip of his tea before continuing. "Part of the samurai way...the philosophy that people are much like swords. Does that resonate with you as well, Lili Kobayashi?"

"To say that people are like swords...hm. I can understand it with just that. Swords have many uses, many roles within culture. Vaunted heirlooms that gain strong names and are passed down from generation to generation. Tools of war that only function at their best when they are maintained properly. Cleaned of blood and dirt, sharpened, honed. Processes repeated over and over, to create the blades of legend that cut open paths to the future."

"Yes, you understand perfectly."

"So that legend Hanzo...allowed himself to dull and rust, and sits in disrepair even now. Atop his empire of dirt and stone."

"It is a tragic thing. I remember my battle with Lord Hanzo as if it were yesterday. I remember the things he told me, when he was filled with conviction and vigour. He wanted to test my convictions, but he also had his own. His true goal was to unite the shinobi world, and bring peace to it once and for all."

My eyes widen. "That...was Hanzo's goal?"

"Yes. I persevered, but...unfortunately, he did not. He abandoned his goals, and his conviction. He settled for the power he gained as the head of a shinobi village. Perhaps he became worn down by the endless struggle. Perhaps he saw a mountain too high to climb. Perhaps he was broken by some event we are not, nor will ever be, privy to. But the legend of Lord Hanzo...even if the man lives today, that legend has turned to dust."

"Is that the ultimate fate of those who try to turn the world?"

"I do not believe that. Do you remember what I said earlier? People are like swords."

"Yes..."

"Their feelings and convictions can be passed down from person to person, and down through the generations. Lord Hanzo passed his convictions on to me, and it is for that reason that I stand before you today. But you would know about things of this nature. Are you not known as a blade of justice yourself, Lili Kobayashi?"

Is this what he was getting at? I see now...the movement of the heavens truly is curious at times.

"Ane-ue saw strength in me, strength that I didn't know was there," I say with a hand over my heart. "And she chose to love me...from there, with her guidance and training, I became a beautiful weapon, one able to cut through the threads of fate and create my own destiny. From what she started, more strength poured in. I honed myself, becoming stronger and wiser each day. Overcoming challenge after challenge, rising above myself. As I sit here before you, the great General of samurai who has guided his people into prosperity, I hold many names. Those born from love, and those born from overwhelming power. General Mifune...you mean to say that Hanzo's spirit has been passed down to you, as a means of further tempering you, and thus still lives on today...even if the legend himself exists no longer."

"Yes, exactly."

"Hanzo had a great dream, but unlike you and I, he had nobody to fight for. All he had was himself, and his power. Because of that, when he eventually became worn down by all of the world's challenges, when the only strength he had to rely on was physical, he could not pull himself out of that spiral. He eventually fell downwards into despair, believing that nothing could be done. That shinobi, and indeed all humans, would simply fall towards their base desires. That peace would never come, no matter how much blood was spilled, and no matter how many sacrifices were made."

Mifune looks at me curiously.

"Hanzo may have fallen...but you and I know that he was not a failure. His dream lives on in you, and now that I know his story, it blossoms in me as well. And because I have a reach further than either of you, because I have been blessed as chosen of heaven, I will be able to see it through. Not just fate...I will cut apart reality itself, as the great blade of justice, and as mankind's greatest revolutionary."

"Lili..."

"I say these things with the utmost confidence, General Mifune." I look at him staunchly. "I believe in them, and I believe in myself. But I am not alone. I will never be alone. Because I was born an elegant blade, too. The name you speak was one passed down, by a woman who could see further than anyone ever could. She called me a heavenly blossom, and made sure that it was embedded in my spirit. I have things that I was given, and many more things that I intend to pass down."

"I see." He laughs heartily. "Truly, you have been raised well by the God of Shinobi!"

"Thank you..."

"I will praise you in my heart for accepting my dream, and that of Lord Hanzo's. For you to acknowledge him as a hero in his own right, that was something that I wished to hear."

"Of course," I say with a smile. "I wouldn't expect someone with less than admiration for him to refer to him so reverently, even now. If I should meet Hanzo on my journey, I will remind him of your battle. It's possible he knew, somewhere in his heart, that you lived on. I will learn from Hanzo of the Salamander...his triumphs, and his mistakes. And I will build on that with my loved ones. Our strength alone is sufficient to tear the world asunder as we please. But for true revolution, it will take more than that. Those hands that support us can also help us turn the world."

"Well said. I wish you luck in your journey, Lili Kobayashi. And look forward to your time as Hokage."

"You do have quite a bit of confidence in me, General."

"Perhaps so." He takes a sip of his tea. "But I know that I will not regret putting my faith in you."

"Thank you for that, sir." I finish my own tea and set the cup down. "And thank you for this tea, it was truly delicious. As a gift for your wisdom and hospitality...would you like to hear a story of mine?"

"A story? It sounds intriguing."

"It is a story about the great mother wolf, a mistress of the blade. She wielded a nodachi, one filled with divine strength."

Mifune sits up attentively, setting his cup down. "A divine warrior of the forest? Please, tell on."

"As you wish, General. I came to blows with this woman in a brilliant dance...her name was Fubuki Inugami."

"I'm taking it things went well in your meeting?"

Joshua and I are seated in the dining car of this private train, getting ready to enjoy a light meal as we return to the city proper.

"They went very well, yes. Though I cannot yet divulge to you the details of our conversation."

"Heh. That's only fair. I wouldn't pry either way."

"I see."

"Though...I have my own guesses about the details myself. Whatever's happening, good luck to you."

"Thank you, Joshua. If I might ask something of you?"

"Sure."

"Many hands will be needed to see our dreams through in the future," I say to him. "If I could ask you to support General Mifune as much as you possibly can, to that end..."

"No need to ask twice. I'm all in," he says with a smile. "I'm guessing you'll be in the big chair sooner than later, so...when we get there, of course."

"Yes. When we get there."

"Pretty exciting to think about, though. Can't wait."

I break apart my chopsticks as we settle into silence.

With the next morning comes the end of our visit. Between last night's dinner and today's breakfast, we shouldn't be at any risk of starving on our trip back home.

"It was really great hosting you! Y'all take care, and be safe on your way back!"

Cadence gives us each a smothering hug, along with a wooden lunch box to dig into during our journey. They definitely have a weight to them, which I expected of her. We should be just fine as far as food goes. Hina and Shino completed their tasks, recording information that will be sent to the Hokage and used to help bolster national security. The Iron has also gleaned new information that they will use to secure their own borders, and stifle the influence of outfits such as Akatsuki. Nothing out of the ordinary has gone on, aside from my little meeting with Mifune. I have to wonder if that was the real purpose behind this mission, and everything else was busywork. Even then, I couldn't ever call it a waste.

"We'll take you guys down to the train station. From there, it's all you," Joshua says to us.

"The last stop is where you want off, just like when we came in. Easy to make your way out from there," Yuna explains. "Either way, it's been a pleasant experience. Never thought I'd say that to shinobi and all."

"You have been very gracious hosts," I say to her. "It is very much appreciated, given your previous experiences. Hopefully we will cross paths again soon."

"Yeah. I feel the same way."

"Miss Lili...please be safe..."

I gently rub Aria's head. "I will, my darling. I hope to see you soon...I know that you're going to grow into a lovely woman who will do great things. Take care of your Mama and Papa, yes?"

"I will. Thank you..."

"Let's hit the road, y'all," Joshua says. "Sprout, wife. See you soon."

"Aye-aye, hubby!" Cadence says with a salute. Aria nods and follows suit.

The five of us take another rickshaw ride into Kurosawa Port, and stop at the train station where we entered a few days prior. The driver gets instructions to wait as Joshua and Yuna escort us to the platform. We can see the locomotive in the distance puffing out steam.

"Guess that's a wrap. It was great having you guys," Joshua says. "Thanks for stopping by, and make sure you're not strangers."

"We can make sure of that here and now," I say as I produce three cards. Two of them have my business information, the other is blank. "Here you are. Do you need a pen?"

"I got one," Joshua says. "Yuna, your work box is fine, right?"

"Sure is."

"Alright, just a second..." He quickly writes on the card and hands it back to me. Very neat writing, but that should be expected of a budding scholar. "That should let us send stuff back and forth if we need to. Snazzy cards, though. Maybe I should get a set of my own."

"They're quite convenient for situations like these. Networking is just as important to me as ninjutsu."

"I don't doubt it. The world really is in good hands, don't you think, Yuna?"

"Heh. Sounds like it. Well, you guys better get on the train before it tears off. See you around."

"Yeah. Take care, and keep doing big things," Joshua follows up.

"We shall, good sir."

After exchanging warm handshakes, Hina, Shino, and I enter the train with all of our items. We wave off Joshua and Yuna one more time as the train departs, then settle into our seats for the journey to the eastern edge of the country. Homeward bound once more.

"We can discuss the details of our mission on the way back to the Leaf," I say to my comrades. "For now, it should be a good time to relax and gather our thoughts until we can have a proper sit down."

"I agree," Hina says. "Lili, might I ask something?"

"Of course, my love. What is it?"

"Your meeting with General Mifune...it must have been something that reached beyond the purview of mortals such as ourselves."

"It was so, yes. He saw in me someone that could succeed where others had failed. Someone who could truly bring about revolution, and give this world the hope it deserves. That destructive title of World Serpent, given to me by Fubuki-senpai...it holds more meaning than most realize."

"I see."

"It will be a path stained with blood, Hina. Those who wish and pray for great change, but are not prepared to fight to their last breath for it, are those who will never see those dreams come to pass."

"It's as I said before. No matter what happens, or even if the world turns against me...I will be by your side, no matter what. That is my promise to you, Lili."

"Yes. Shino, what say you?" I ask him.

He adjusts his glasses. "I feel the same, Boss. Deciding to be your right hand was not something just for the good times. If the journey towards your justice leads into the darkness, then I'm prepared to handle all of that. I don't see anything else making sense."

"Thank you, Shino. I love you dearly for that."

"You're welcome, Lili."

"With those declarations...we are no longer just Team Eight of the Hidden Leaf. But our true form is yet to be known. We will continue to grow in wisdom and in strength."

"Yes," Hina and Shino say in unison.

I look through the window at the passing scenery. This is it. I know where I'm going, and I can start planning how I will get there.

"Our journey to the promised land begins at this moment. And with this divine strength, I claim victory. The only thing left...is to see it through."
