[x] Talk to Rei about Well-being
Rei is doing fine. You pinch the bridge of your nose and reiterate the question with a bunch of subclauses to make sure it gets translated properly by Rei's peculiar (and bruised) brain. Rei admits that she's currently experiencing a severe migraine headache. She says this with impressive stoicism, though you notice she's squinting up at you. She feels a little bit better from the initial onset, but she feels kind of…kind of nauseous, actually. Excuse her. Rei hurries to the bathroom. You don't hear her throw up, and Rei returns a few minutes later, unperturbed. Anyway, her memory after she was pinned to the building is a bit of a blur. She thinks Shinji might have saved her life? But she's not sure. She…should she thank him?
Rei is feeling kind of…well, she feels…excuse Rei for a moment. Rei returns to the bathroom. Rei returns. Rei is feeling like an empty vase. Like dried-up watercolor paints. She cannot pilot Eva in this state. It feels bad. She is not sure what she should be doing with herself right now. She's been spending most of her time sitting at home staring into space or sleeping while you and Shinji are at work/school. Rei is no stranger to idleness, and she tells you that this is what she did before she moved in with you in her spare time.
You teasingly tell her that you recall Rei saying she was busy when you asked her about spending time with friends. Rei falls silent for a moment. She was…awaiting orders, so she had to be on standby. Rei frowns. Should she still be doing that? You encourage her to keep her hobbies up. Rei nods. Of course. You know best, Captain.
Rei says she's been spending more time with Shinji. Rei says she thinks she enjoys his company. She does not understand why he seems so nervous around her, though. She seems worried about this.
Over the course of the week Rei's condition gradually improves, though she seems a bit mixed-up sometimes. She briefly went back to not wearing clothes at home for an evening, to Shinji's mortification, until you reminded her about the conversation you had. Rei looks genuinely embarrassed (though probably more that she forgot than anything else). She also tries unsuccessfully to cook, having briefly forgotten that she's not supposed to. She burns the vegetarian dish she was making in the pan. Shinji helps bandage one of her fingers after she nicks it with a knife.
You wiggle your eyebrows at him as he flushes from holding Rei's hand. He glares at you. You love teasing this kid.
[x] Talk to Shinji about Tokyo-3
It's uh. Nice. Uh. Apart from all the toxic dust? Shinji seems to be trying extra hard to find something nice to say about the city, but you can tell he's kind of struggling. The mood in the city has been pretty shitty as of late, so that doesn't really surprise you. There's an ongoing emigration from the city by a decent chunk of the population. Apparently, Shinji, Aida and Suzuhara are the only boys left in their class now. A lot of people are walking around wearing masks. Most are sensible, but some are pretty elaborate. The cashier at your local convenience store wears a full WWI-era gas mask. It's awkward. You and him both commiserate on the unpleasant state of affairs.
You manage to finally convince Shinji that this particular problem wasn't his fault. You explain in detail that pretty much anything that either Rei or he did would have resulted in the Angel shedding a massive amount of toxic dust. Shinji seems a little less depressed about the situation when you're done.
Shinji excuses himself to go check on Rei, who is spacing out on the couch. You let them be.
[x] Combat training
You work on Shinji's melee abilities this week, which in previous training sessions have left a lot to be desired. He can't rely on Rei to do all the dirty work this time, so you put him up against simulation-Azazel and Sariel (Arakiel's program isn't done yet and is probably a bit too fresh in Shinji's mind) and let them beat the crap out of him.
The sessions are grueling, but eventually, Shinji starts fighting back, rather than flailing around ineffectually when overwhelmed. He's able to consistently finish off Azazel with only minimal damage to Unit-01 by the end of the week. Sariel's trickier. You think you might need to work on his physical coordination.
[x] Go out/free time
Rei and Shinji go for a long walk together, entirely on Shinji's own initiative. You're impressed. You fight the urge to embarrass him for it and let him have this moment. Shinji evidently had noticed Rei has slowly been merging with your living room couch and decided Rei needs to use her legs. The walk is eventually cut short when Rei's nausea acts up, but she seems genuinely appreciative over Shinji fussing over her.
[x] Arts program
Rei spends her afternoons working with clay. She's not really able to produce much as she's having trouble focusing. She makes a crude model of Pen2 and some odd pitted spherical objects that are her attempts at making a model of the moon. Rei can't quite remember what it looks like from memory. She switches back to charcoal after a few aborted attempts to make a model of her own head and doodles aimlessly, mostly drawing pictures of buildings and penguins. She doesn't seem as engaged as usual, but she doesn't seem unhappy.
[x] Special activity: Buy Rei a Penguin plush and have a calm talk about how to handle pets. I.E: Don't squeeze them.
You drive way out of your way to pick up a plush that's almost the same size as Pen2 and present it to Rei. Rei doesn't understand. Why would she prefer a simulacrum to the real thing? Humans always prefer real things to simulacra, right? You shrug. There are some artificial things you prefer to real things. Like the simulated Angels. And artificial banana flavor. And horror movies. Rei smiles at you briefly and accepts the penguin. You instruct her on better ways to interact with Pen2. You notice she's been kind of smothering him, and he's his own man. Rei has to let him exist independently from her. Rei thinks about this for longer than you expected her to, and then asks you why you think that.
What do you say?
