Even if she's got enough tenacity and luck to survive, she won't come out unscathed. I'd rather keep the pilots minimally scathed, and Plan D seems like the least ineffective way to do that.

Hrm. With Unit-00 in good enough condition that tanking some more hits should "with luck" be survivable, and the sniper rifle having a perishingly low chance of actually landing the kill shot, it's absolutely tactically correct to have Rei protect Shinji - we cannot afford for him to miss his shot, so minimizing the risk of that is paramount. Unit-01 is in comparable shape to Unit-00, so if Rei would take fatal damage protecting Shinji, Shinji would quite possibly take fatal damage himself if unprotected. The correct choice is extremely clear.

Except...with all of Rei's issues surrounding being "expendable," asking her to take a hit for another pilot is absolutely only going to make her more certain that she's correct. See, for all her words, even the Major acknowledges the necessity when push comes to shove. It's...ugh. I mean, on a narrative level it's an absolutely perfect setup. Major props to @Sutekh for how this all lined up - it can't have been precisely planned in a linear sense, given how our tactical choices led to this situation, but all the ingredients were arranged in the right places to make such a development possible/probable. But from the perspective of having to actually make the choice it's agonizing.

...which is why I'm probably going to punt on it and go back to lurking, honestly. But I felt it was at least appropriate to acknowledge that this is a result of facing an excellently designed painful choice, rather than just apathy or disinterest.

Maybe I am misunderstanding something here, but is there any difference (in terms of distance) between holding it back or wrestling it to the ground? because considering that the Unit has to be danger close (right up in its face) in order to use its AT-field to hold it back/wrestle it to the ground, I am not seeing any difference between the two.

Uriel VII: Vivace
[X] Plan D(fence)
-[X] Asuka: Do not adjust current strategy; Asuka's job is to simply create a barrier between the Angel and Tokyo-3. Hold ground and hope for the best.
-[X] Rei: Continue harassing the Angel with shots. Do her best to hit the Core as well (with the caveat that her odds of hitting it are much lower).
-[X] Shinji: Good luck

You tell them to continue with their current roles in the fight. Asuka makes a frustrated noise, but complies, pushing her AT-Field to maximum. The Angel pushes up against her, a great plume of superheated air forming around it. Asuka's outline is so hazy it's difficult to make out her position.

Ibuki sends the targeting data to the Evangelions. Rei doesn't budge until Asuka yells at her to get into position. Rei reluctantly moves further away from the battle and begins positioning herself to fire. Shinji limps further from the danger zone and begins charging a shot. Rei fires a shot into the Angel, missing the target but splattering a few of the pyramids. For good measure, Asuka rakes her Glaive over the Angel's surface. Aoba says the temperature inside Unit-02 is approaching dangerous levels.

The Angel fires at Rei, but she's ready for it this time. She rolls out of the way, but her movement is awkward and she ends up falling on her bad arm. Rei hisses in pain and struggles to get up. She manages to singe the bottom of her foot on the blossoming flames where the Angel struck, but hastily crawls away.

Shinji fires…right as the Angel shifts into the fourth dimension; each of its component pyramids, as well as the Angel itself, becomes pentachoroid. Looking at it makes your brain hurt. They look like cubes…no…tetrahedrons…no…pentagons…the shape keeps changing. You think you really hate looking at it. Shinji's shot misses as the target briefly vanishes from view. Ritsuko smacks her forehead in consternation and barks some orders at Ibuki you don't understand. The two of them pound at their computers.

Rei fires again, but this time, she only hits air. Somehow. Rei says she doesn't understand in numb confusion. Asuka says to shut up and keep firing. She screams that if Shinji gets her killed she's going to kill him. She sounds hysterical. Shinji dutifully begins charging another shot. Hyuga says all three pilots' psychographs are reading abnormally.

The Angel starts pushing Asuka back. Verfickt nochmal! Asuka yells, hurry up and shoot it, you worthless sack of sh—

The Angel tosses part of itself at Unit-01, exploding violently at the Evangelion's feet. Shinji goes flying backwards, smashing through a bluff. Hyuga shouts that Unit-01's armor has been breached, and the helmet has been shattered. Rei screams Shinji's name and immediately abandons her position. Asuka roars in an inarticulate torrent of curse words, some of which you're pretty sure are completely novel constructions in German.

You and the bridge watch in silent horror as Rei tries unsuccessfully to get Shinji off the ground. Unit-01 looks…really bad. Its armor has been reduced to blackened slag dripping off of its body, which is horribly burnt. Its face is partially melted off. It reminds you of some of the pictures you've seen of atomic bombing victims. You snap back to reality and start barking orders to ascertain the pilot's status. Aoba confirms he's alive. Barely. His vitals are weak. Administering cardiac massage.

Rei grabs the Positron Rifle from the ground. Miraculously, it's still functioning. Rei hefts it awkwardly. Ritsuko hits the enter button on her laptop with a flourish. The rifle is now calibrated for hitting four-dimensional targets. And five dimensional targets, and sixth and seventh, for good measure. Which is good, because the Angel has just become a hexateron. Asuka is knocked off her feet by the overwhelming bulk of the Angel.

Rei hefts the gun and points it at the Angel, leaning on Unit-01 for support. The Angel begins to approach Rei. Asuka springs to her feet, lets out an animalistic scream and rams the Angel backwards. Ibuki shouts with alarm that Unit-02's synchronization rate has exceeded 100%. Unit-02 is in danger of entering a berserk state. The pilot is losing consciousness. You shout at Asuka to keep it together and have Hyuga administer a series of shocks to keep her grounded. The sync level, thankfully, starts to drop. Unit-02 has always been the most stable of the Evangelions. You do not want Asuka pushing this thing around uncontrolled or hurting herself while Rei is aiming.

A few moments later, Rei pulls the trigger, shouting a warning to Unit-02, which throws up its AT-Field. The Angel explodes with enormous force, vaporizing the entire surrounding area. Mercifully, this is with considerably less force than a full detonation, and the explosive radius does not contain Tokyo-3, though the shockwave does do extensive damage to what remains of the southwest of the city.

Aoba confirms the target has been destroyed. Ritsuko breathes a sigh of relief.

URIEL
~Fin~

The pilots are all alive, miraculously. Rei drags Unit-01 out of the hot zone with Asuka's help, using their remaining power (the umbilical cables having been thoroughly destroyed) to deposit it in an undignified heap near one of the entrances to the Geofront. Rescue crews waiting in the wings for the all-clear arrive on the scene in literally record time to get Shinji out of the Evangelion and into medical care.

You spend the entire interval between the end of the battle and Ibuki informing you gently that Shinji's condition is stable with your face in your hands trying not to throw up. Shinji's most obvious injuries are largely first and second-degree burns, a dislocated shoulder, possible cracked ribs, and severe bruising. He's currently getting stitches for a nasty lesion on his leg. He's going to be evaluated for head trauma next. He's going to be in the hospital for at least a week.

The girls are in more or less the same shape as each other. Both have some minor burns, with Asuka faring slightly worse. Asuka was largely saved from heatstroke by the "verdammt heat resistant plugsuit", a special plugsuit that swells up to fill with a compressed ultracold fluid. Asuka would probably be more grateful for it if it didn't make her look like an engorged tick or overripe cranberry when it was in use. She has to be cut out of it (or "popped", as she puts it) due to the deactivation mechanism failing. She's currently sullenly glaring a hole in the far wall of her hospital room.

You sit quietly with her for a bit and listen to her vent about the indignity of it all and how Shinji is a stupid idiot (that she's totally not worried about) before you decide to go check on Rei, who predictably immediately made her way to Shinji's room the millisecond she was able. You're certain he's not cleared for visitors yet, but Rei might finally be throwing her "I'm the Commander's adopted daughter" weight around. You're not sure.

You turn to leave Asuka's hospital room only to find Rei's face centimeters from your own. She does not look happy with you. Your heart jumps up into your throat from the surprise. She walks at you, forcing you to back into the hospital room. Asuka's demeanor oozes with amusement as she watches this unfold.

Yes, Rei?

Rei does not understand. Why did you not order her to protect Unit-01. She could have prevented him from getting hurt. She promised she would protect him. Her voice is tense.

Yeah, says Asuka in agreement, come to think of it, that order was pretty shitty. You tell her, Rei. Asuka eggs Rei on, though you're unsure if it's out of sincere agreement with Rei or just a desire to stir the pot. Rei gives Asuka a withering glare and tells her to be quiet in her usual monotone. Asuka's smile vanishes, her face twisting as if she'd smelled something foul. Asuka starts to interject, but Rei says she is speaking with the Major. Lurking behind her crimson eyes you see something dark and furious. You shiver. Asuka falls silent.

Explain yourself, Major. Rei thinks for a second. Please, she adds as an afterthought.

[ ] Turn it back on Rei. What would she have done, in your position? You did what you could to reduce the risk to the pilots. If you had ordered her to get in front of Shinji, she could have been the one hurt, or worse, considering her willingness to throw her life away in battle.
[ ] Blame the Angel instead. Rei should be directing her ire at the monsters trying to kill you all. You're both on the same team here. Fighting amongst yourselves isn't helping anything.
[ ] Try to find some way to escape this interaction and push this discussion to another time. Rei is probably not interested in whatever you have to say when she's in this (frankly terrifying) emotional state. Hopefully you can have a civil discussion once she's had some time to calm down.
[ ] Let her lay into you, if that's what she wants. Hopefully she will not say or do something you will both regret.

The second option in my opinion is deflection, oblivious the Angel is at fault, Rei is talking about our orders insuring that things ended up the way they did, the third I think is the worst out of all them, a classic (evangelion) solution of letting problems fester until some better time to talk about them comes along (such a time never coming along) am very tempted by the fourth option, but I feel like while Rei is really (REALLY) angry at the outcome here, she is also honestly looking for an explanation from us about why her crush/love is grievously wounded.

Edit, but the first option is not really an explanation but more of a thought exercise which I would normally favor, but we all know what Rei would do if in our position, but it could have some other factors of making her realize that people care for her just like she cares for Shinji, but could also bring up the whole problem of her considering herself expendable (and all the other subsequent problems) which I think we have smoothed over with the museum trip, and if so do not want to bring up again.

Also out of curiosity how would it have ended like if No time like the present had been the winner?

Unit-02 probably would have gone berserk at some point and started tearing the Angel apart with its bare hands, complicating the firing process. Rei would probably have taken a couple of hits from the Angel, though they would have been mitigated by the AT-Field since Rei would be ready for a hit. Shinji would be (mostly) fine.

Basically, both Asuka and Rei would have been laid up but probably with less severe injuries than Shinji's.

I don't know yet which option is better, but I think it doesn't hurt to hint that Shinji (and Asuka - but she won't admit it) will experience the same feelings if Rei-chan dies.

Too bad there's no "because I knew you'd let yourself be killed" option. It would be one hell of a gut punch for Rei but it would really illustrate why her repeatedly treating her own life like nothing has resulted in a degradation of trust that has led Misato resorting to sub-optimal orders that had to be made taking into account her personality.

The first option sorta does that but feels, at least to me, more like a spur of the moment deflection that incidentally happens to touch upon Rei's possible course of action.

Welcome to Evangelion. Where we can choose between the plague and cholera. Holy hell, that chapter. Especially the ending. Good lord.

Even with just the damage to Unit-01 I feel like we're likely going to be severely reprimanded/penalized by Gendo when he gets back. Hopefully we'll can molify Rei before then or it'll likely be even worse.

At least with how utterly bullshit this angel was there might be a chance we get some leniency. Really considering how powerful it's AoE effect was I think we came out of this fight pretty well considering only one Eva was severely damaged. Though Unit-01 and Shinji being combat ineffective for at least a few weeks, if not more, is going to suck. Wonder if they'll end up pushing Unit-03 into service sooner than planned to help shore up Tokyo-3 in the meantime.

Could we get a list of all the Angel's weve seen so far at some point? Be nice to keep track of them.

Also to keep an eye on when we should expect OVERWHELMING FORCE from a Zeruel equivalent.

At least he is alive and stable. Does Nerv have some better medical faculties than ordinary hospital?
You sit quietly with her for a bit and listen to her vent about the indignity of it all and how Shinji is a stupid idiot (that she's totally not worried about)
Sure you, not worried. We all perfectly believe in this. But you would prefer if he was released sooner than later, wouldn't you?

Well, this is unexpected
You shiver. Asuka falls silent.
Oh shit. I think all those years of pretending that she doesn't feel emotions compounded.
Also to keep an eye on when we should expect OVERWHELMING FORCE from a Zeruel equivalent.
I don't think there is any correlation between canon and this quest. So we can't assume anything based on canon.

The offensive plan was my idea. It would be hypocritical of me to make excuses now.

I am sure he would like to reprimand us due to what happened to Unit 1 (aka his wife) but given the nature of the Angels capabilities, that we had 16 minutes to kill it before game over, lacking any JSSDF support, and no weapons/items that could equalize the battle in our favor, I think he is going to have to settle with nitpicking some of our tactical orders (hopefully)

Rushing Unit 3 into service is a interesting prospect, are we going be welcoming someone's best friend into the pilot core sooner rather then later, hmm that is interesting.

The offensive plan was my idea. It would be hypocritical of me to make excuses now.

Don't beat yourself up over it, my main problem with the other plan is that while it lowered any risk for the girls, the trade off being that it concentrated all of said risk onto Shinji, one support beam left to so support the structure if you will.

In hindsight, keeping both Positrons on the field was probably the better option, in order to split the Angel's attention; that, and maybe holding back with Asuka and letting the Angel ascend to a vulnerable dimension (which was anything over 1?) by itself. I do tend towards the aggressive plans myself, mostly out of the thinking that if we kill the Angels fast enough they do less damage. Doesn't always work out.

Anyway, on to the current problem; I'm going to run down the options and give my impressions.

[ ] Turn it back on Rei. What would she have done, in your position? You did what you could to reduce the risk to the pilots. If you had ordered her to get in front of Shinji, she could have been the one hurt, or worse, considering her willingness to throw her life away in battle.

This gets her to think about Misato's difficulties and the wider picture - and could take it in the direction of "how the hell can we trust you not to get yourself killed when you keep talking about things like this". However, it's also conflict, or even shutting her down, which I'm not sure we overly want to do - we're trying to cultivate her independence, not shut her down.

[ ] Blame the Angel instead. Rei should be directing her ire at the monsters trying to kill you all. You're both on the same team here. Fighting amongst yourselves isn't helping anything.

A decent option from Misato's POV... but might also reinforce the whole internal "I am part-Angel and that is bad" thing. Not a fan.

[ ] Try to find some way to escape this interaction and push this discussion to another time. Rei is probably not interested in whatever you have to say when she's in this (frankly terrifying) emotional state. Hopefully you can have a civil discussion once she's had some time to calm down.

Putting big emotional conversations off until later lets us prepare... unless we never have them because other things come up. Also Rei might not want to put this off, which could end badly.

[ ] Let her lay into you, if that's what she wants. Hopefully she will not say or do something you will both regret.

Possibly the best of a messy set of options; it cultivates her independence, lets her express her own internal emotions, maybe even lets them process them, but it does rely on Misato keeping her cool. Not the safest of bets.

On the balance of things, I'm going with:

[X] Let her lay into you, if that's what she wants. Hopefully she will not say or do something you will both regret.

But I'm open to arguements.

-[X] And then Shinji-kun would have already lost you. He would feel the same as you right now, Rei-chan - maybe even worse. Me too... I may not be the best mother in the world, or a bad onee-san... But I don't want to see you all die.

The fourth option does not suit me.
