Reaching for the Stars - A Stargate Quest

I'm not sure the big swing actually directly solves Colonel Dorn's problem, is the main downside to me, but I'd rather secure our own future first and then try to find other ways to help him in the future then the other way around.

[X] Space Force Supremacy

I could have sworn the Jaffa used naquadah armor, but steel makes more sense.

Is that a change from canon or was I just misremembering things?

-[X] Make some calls in Washington and see if NORAD can be convinced to cancel their plans for Cheyenne Mountain, granting you control over the whole mountain. (DC 8 Diplomacy, +2 from Poster Child, + 2 from Connections in Washington)
-[X] Spend luck on this roll.

A tech we should really be looming forward to are Zats. Once we learn to make them we can redesign them into proper pistols or as under barrel weapons.

I'm decently certain that there was never a material given for the Jaffa armor and I'm going with Naquadah actually being pretty rare, so don't expect it to show up in huge quantities. It's mostly restricted to the actually important bits of tech that get something out of its special properties as opposed to using it as material for armor or casings.

I mean rare in space has a pretty different meaning. :p

Wow we're going to listen to this guy then promptly kick him while he's down. I love it.

Can't make a Political Dynasty without a lot of backstabbing.

This is absolutely brutal, but we did pick a politics specced character. Time to get our hands dirty.

@Azel so what is the problem with NORAD again? I am a bit lost. Sure the guy is given the run around and everybody hated him but he did nothing wrong so what's going to happen if we convince Norad to give the Cheyenne to us?

... Isn't NORAD a USAF installation?
After a quick Wiki Search, it is under both US and Canada command so technically no. Peterson was once USAF but according to Wikipedia it is now Space Force base. So I think NORAD's US side is now under Space Force jurisdiction. @Azel Is this going to effect the results? Since Peterson is now also a Space Force base?

I second this question. I'm not quite sure why we need to get rid of NORAD aside from having more mountain (which is nice), but I can't work out if we're doing Colonel Dorn a solid or just sticking a "kick me" sign on his back.

Alright. Some background.

The US Air Force has a history of massively neglecting whatever they don't see as their most important task, which used to be strategic bombers during the early Cold War and more recently fighter jets. This is where the terms "bomber mafia" and "fighter mafia" come from. Those are groups of officers who are acerbically ensuring that the Air Force only spends resources and effort on the thing it is "supposed" to do. This has led to them also neglecting their space related capabilities, with the Air Force Space Command ultimately getting turned into its own service, the Space Force.

As far as a lot of Air Force officers are concerned, the Space Force is a bunch of seditious desk jockeys with delusions of grandeur. Which isn't helped by the fact that a lot of jurisdictions and command structures are quite a snarl. Peterson Space Force Base is under Space Force control, but houses also the headquarters a lot of important command infrastructure from NORAD, which is still part of the Air Force. At the same time, both Space Force and Air Force are organized within the Department of Defense as part of the jurisdiction of Secretary of the Air Force.

This is the backdrop for the current developments in regards to the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, which was originally built during the Cold War as a hardened command bunker for NORAD. Which is why it keeps cropping up in media as an important and secretive military installation linked to the US nuclear arsenal. In the real world though, NORAD moved out in 2005 and instead consolidated it's infrastructure on Peterson Air Force Base. Since then the Cheyenne Mountain Complex was largely mothballed and only used for crew training and as a backup command location.

However, in 2015, the then commanding Admiral of both NORAD and USNORTHCOM decided to move some new equipment into the old bunkers to protect it from hypothetical EMP attacks. So they threw $700 million at Raytheon to make that happen. This plan is called "Cheyenne Mountain Realignment".

You are now part of this mess.

As far as this quest is concerned, the Cheyenne Mountain Realignment got repeatedly delayed due to the antics of Major General West and then the creation of Space Force and the resulting inter-service snarl. It is now yet again in a state of limbo, partially because you are now in command of the lower levels of the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, which are Top Secret and don't officially exist, which causes confusion as to the status of the upper levels, which is where NORAD wants to move their stuff.

Colonel Dorn is stuck in the middle while everyone is trying to sort out who is in charge of what and if the project is still on.

What you can do now is to make some calls to friends in Washington and with Raytheon to make sure that the Cheyenne Mountain Realignment is getting canned and you get the whole mountain for yourself. This, obviously, can have side effects such as making a few enemies in the process, as all of this involves maneuvering around a lot of very important people with very important egos.

Does Colonel Dorn seem to care one way or the other? Or does he just want it all sorted out?
I'd kinda like our closest neighbours to be on friendly terms is all.

Judging from you talk, he would prefer to have thing sorted out one way or another. He ain't NORAD or Raytheon, so he has no real stake in the project. However, there's still the risk that you will cause more problems for him through the fallout of the project getting canned.
