Peril's Origin - A Magical Girl Quest [Complete]

If it sways anyone, I note we can always get Transcendence later. I just don't want to get it immediately.

Yeah. This is why I'm perfectly happy to hold off.

I'd just prefer saving the bulk of the EXP over spending the bulk of it on other stuff because player behavior makes saving up enough to actually buy something like Transcendence difficult.

On one hand that's a fair point.
On the other, we were just talking about how people need to level the damn weapons more yesterday.

Notice I said "the bulk".

I'm perfectly happy to spend like 500 or so EXP on weapons right now, and maybe another 500 or so depending on our immediate surroundings in the next update.

I just don't want to completely empty our stockpile when we're going into a situation completely blind.

How's 510 sound?

[X] EXP Plan Iron Man Mode

not spending the majority of our exp when we know nothing about when/where we are sounds like a good idea to me

I might have been wary about spending EXP but let's face the facts.

First of all, we are NOT alone, Lu is with us and she is by far a greater combatant. She has more health and greater mobility. We can probably rely on her to outfight or to escape any direct danger.

Second of all, the two Shop Items I would otherwise prioritize (Super Ability and its prerequisite) we cannot purchase because we need three victims to Superkill.

Third of all, none of levelups guarantee significant payoffs as in gamechangers. They are a gamble, one that doesn't change that we will either have the tools to tackle the immediate situation without leveling significantly, or won't. EDIT - and we very much can bump any weapon a level or four even after purchasing Transcendence.

And finally... I disagree with calling Transcendence a crutch. See point 1 for our True crutch in the next update or two.

I just want to know what it does right this instant. I have no other reasons other than that.

[X] EXP Plan Iron Man Mode

Alright let's do it that way if trance dance is that overpowered

If you say so, LDj.

I am half expecting it in the wake of your words and my guesses to compare to main quest's Segarite Core in terms of impact.

This is my new favorite way of referring to that shop item. :p

A very festive typo.

Gabriel then moves to address you instead, a hint of curiousity in her voice: "I was surprised to find this one, more so that she did not call me to battle at once. May I believe this to be your influence?"

She is surprised Lucifer was here it seems. Interesting that she suspects us to be the cause that Lucifer has gone under the radar.

But yeah just to be perfectly clear, since I'm going to bed and won't be able to comment on anything: I'm not advocating we not get Trance Dance ever, I just want to not get it immediately because I want to see how far we can go without it.

Okay, so... here is the thing: arguing for a case based on background knowledge only a handful of people has feels like an abuse of that knowledge to me.

@justinkal is correct in that it may be possible to buy the item later, but just as he said, bulking up that many points again is not easy. I doubt it is a spoiler to say chances are slim to get to 1.5k in one swoop.

What Lost is wanting to do is stop players from buying the Transcendence-item because, see above. He is interested in what you will try to come up with against later enemies and bosses while not having it.

I am not going to say what it is, but I will say that going without it for too long will become a difficulty spike for future encounters; even those I have not specced out entirely will be built under the assumption that Heidi gets that Item in due time.

So in short? You do not need to buy it now, or soon, to make it through the Quest. But if you want to hold off on it for any larger amount of time, you should be aware that you, the players, will have to compensate for its absence with (sometimes considerably) better plans and ideas than it would normally require.

We've generally been pretty good about coming up with good plans, but then again as someone who isn't actually good at them, I'll leave it up to the people who are actively involved in plan-crafting. Do they want to take up the extra pressure later on?

...how is this the most contested vote in the entire Quest so far?

Oh well, people are weird.
Anyway, votes closed.

We technically have a tie, but you know the drill. Transcendence it is.

In a timeless instant, you see...

Your assistant walked into your tent.

"Sir, four of the five targets have been neutralized." She saluted "And we only lost contact with the squad that failed, sir."
"What unit did we lose?" you asked. this was not unexpected the scouts reported no major threat for a death-squad but no plan survived contact with the enemy.

The woman tried to hide her discomfort, but the way she fluttered of her wings said all.
"It's, uh, Squad Delta-3." She looked at me with sympathy "Sir, I offer my My condolence."

your son was in that unit, wasn't he.
You did not cry. You knew, and had accepted that this might and would happen.

It was for the best. At least your son died honorably.

If you lost your composure that would effect the morale. The mission was mostly successful and you should reflect that. Your eyes found their way to the portrait of your wife on your desk.
"These are death squads, your condolences are not necessary." You state "My son died honorably."

She saluted and left leaving you the rapport.
You felt some water on your cheeks, you where alone now.

The new alliances brought new live into Valhalla. The presence of light could be felt in practically every hallway now. And butterfly wings had joined the feathered ranks. Causing the younger Valkyries to excitedly mumble about how the one big push would finally give them Sheol.
Hildr couldn't remember the last time this many people drank mead in the halls of Valhalla.

She took a horn filled with mead from one of the many tables and retreated into her personal quarters. Even the Valkyrie for all their glory had a needed to rest.

Most Valkyrie where not afraid to get incredibly drunk in public, but a leader had to take care for their image. Most Valkyries where not afraid of getting wasted, there was nothing that strengthen the bonds quite like a huge amount of alcohol and a honorable dual over a minor slight.

But a leader couldn't do that, it would effect morale if Hildr were to cry, get angry at one of her subordinates or came to show any other sign at weakness. Most of the time she would join the festivities and drink, but she would have to be careful to hold her mask of power up.

She sat down in front of a bronze mirror that had been rewarded to her by elves after a glorious battle.

Two feathered wings not of her own wrapped around her enveloping her in their warmth. Someone had snuck behind her, Those wings belonged to the only one that was allowed to do that.

"We met a worthy opponent on the field today" She told Skioi "She had derived her strength from a honorable motive, even if she had chosen to fight alongside the darkness." Hildr closed her eyes "It may be my hubris, but I saw myself reflected in her eyes."

"A demon that was like you? Isn't it common for Demons to be like Valkyries?" Her lover asked, while placing his chin on her shoulder in order to see the refection of Hildr's face in the mirror as she answered his question

"I don't think that she is a demon, she looked more like an elf." Hildr corrected " She had won; the hellgate had opened and I was forced into a retreat, but it was clearly visible in her eyes that she had lost when one of heavens angels had slipped through. It brings up memories"

Skioi raised an eyebrow "That time that I lost my teeth because I told the Valkyries wouldn't survive without the help of heaven or do you mean when you or the first time you led a siege against Valhalla."

Hirldr turned around to show her a satisfied smile, "That time when I thought Gondul why using dishonorable trickery to strengthen your ranks is a bad idea" It didn't escape the attention of the angel that his Valkyrie had lost her smile in the moment that she paused.

"My long live desensitized me from death" She said burying herself deeper into his embrace "The look in the eyes of my opponent adelheid reminded me however, of one simple fact. A war is only possible when people choose to fight together shoulder to shoulder."

You are back out before truly grasping that which you dreamt. Or saw, you can not say for sure. The void spits you back out a slight bit above ground to the sound of violently shattering glass; yet there is no glass to be seen and you meet the ground a moment later. The both of you stumble sideways and land in a tangle of limbs, quiet and still for a few seconds.

A warm afternoon sun caresses your mouth and throat, the rest being shielded by Lu's feathers. Soft earth presses into your back and the wing wound around your waist squeezes almost painfully for a moment.

The noise is gone.
The smell is gone.
The Light is gone.

You made it. And you are safe.

A few tears prick in your eyes, but you force yourself not to cry. Not now, you need to find out where you are first.

A grunt from Lu informs you that your friend is fine as well; she lifts herself up with a bit of thrust and pulls you along, then lets go once you are on your own feet.

Your leg is wet for some reason; you turn to check it but find no blood there; it takes a moment for you to realise that it is not just your leg. When you do, you quickly cancel your transformation. The curious glance from Lu is ignored as you reapply it, which thankfully gives you an unsoiled outfit. She does not say anything, thankfully.

You hold the newly summoned Handle at your side and look around for where you landed; Lu does similarly after summoning her cross, though you can see her frowning from the corner of your eye. She probably wants to ask what exactly happened, but the silence between you is rather compelling and you do not want to break it just yet.

A lush plain stretches out around you, with some small and alien critters grazing some ways away; some of them are watching you, but they do not seem to see you as a threat and continue their meal. A few lone trees stand here and there, offering cooling shadow and thus a reprieve from the somewhat hot sunlight.

And in the distance, you see great swaths of land expanding toward the horizon, as well as a mountain rising above your position nearby. You blink at it, noting how it seems rather small from where you are.

After looking around again to make sure you are alone, you walk over toward the mountain and soon find the terrain turning into a slope. You landed on a plateau that is far above the surrounding countryside. How did these critters get up here, you wonder? Maybe they are like goats who live in the mountains and can do something like running up those slopes even though they almost become right angles in places. Or maybe there is an easier way to ascend elsewhere.

When you return to Lu, who is currently examining an exotic blue flower growing near your landing spot, she speaks to you. Her first words since leaving the portal: "This is Milidia."

She is both curious and confused, likely because this is something that never happened to her before. You were busy seeing visions of whatever that was, but she probably got the full, disorienting experience you can still recall vividly from your first journey.

You do not think you heard the world's name before, so you crouch next to your friend. "Do you know the area?"

She does not look at you, eyes still fixed on the flower in front of her that drinks in the vibrant sunlight. "This dimension lies in False Heaven's outermost territories, near the Elven colony of Reluxus." She pauses for a moment while you try to place it on your mental map, fairly certain Heaven has no territories this side of Earth in your time. "Temperate climate, the land consists mostly of wide plains and plateaus with a few mountains and volcanoes like that one."

A pale finger points into the distance without Lu even needing to look, to what you thought as just another mountain; on closer inspection, you can see the top being open and the air above it sizzling.

It is also the first volcano you have seen in your life; exploring it is actually tempting just to find out what it is like to be near one, but you curb that for now. Getting a grasp on the situation comes first.

"I lived here," Lu supplies as an additional explanation. You nod at that and get back up, which makes her follow.

"Alright," you start, "so first of all, sorry for pulling you along like that, but there was no other way." You are not sorry, even if she wanted to stay and fight.

To your surprise however, Lu makes a dismissive motion. "I am aware and not mad at you. I know to pick my battles, and that one was not something I could have won." That is good to know.

With your apology out of the way, it is time for the next problem. "We know where we are. But do you have any idea when we are?" You put special emphasis on the relevant questions, then add a reminder for your slightly confused friend: "My spell has time travel included after all." You could be at any point in time.

Lu frowns and eyes the afternoon sun in the sky. "Summer," is what she tells you.

A beat.

"Why thank you," you can not help but utter with sarcasm dripping from every word. "At least now I get why it's hot. It's not like there is Summer every year." Wait a second, alien world. "...there is Summer every year on Milidia, right?"

Lu actually chuckles over your sheepish question, but she nods after a moment. "Yes, there is. Summer is the best I can give you right now, though. It has been a long time since I was here without seeking battle."

You just sigh and plop yourself on the ground. "Great, and no locals in sight we can ask." After a glance at Lu, you feel to add to that: "Maybe that's for the better."

"It is." She does not even hesitate to agree with you.

Well, now you are here; with a still unusable means of transportation, a fallen Angel, and no plan what to do next. For starters, you decide, you have to do some meditating; which is what you tell your friend: "I felt new powers after Gabriel showed up, do you mind if I try figuring out what I got?"

You receive a curious gaze and Lu shakes her head. "I do not. Focus yourself while I try to get a better idea of the area."

And that is what you do. Meditation did not come easily when Lu first explained it to you, but there is none of this 'empty your head' stuff happening in it. Maybe it should, but she instead taught you to totally focus inward, on your own thoughts and feelings and magic. It is there, roiling below the surface and waiting.

The biggest difficulty you had recently was getting into this total focus while the magic around you sings, but with enough time even that noise falls into the background. All you hear is the pop-like song of your own power.

You observe the parts you already know, feel out the changes with your mind; it is not absolutely clear, but it does give you enough of an indicator to tell what it does. One is an aura-like effect that subtly floods the surroundings and seems to wait for something. Something horrible and deadly which it will disperse before it can ever find its mark.

The second is something more, something you can not grasp except for that it offers you a greater sense. Something related to battle, you will have to examine this in a moment. After that last two minutes on Valhalla, you already have an idea for what it does.

But there is one more thing, something that shifts into place as you examine. It feels weird, alien, and makes your eyes snap open in wonder. The Handle rests next to you, as it always did, but it still feels a little different. As if you could do more than before, as if the rules are now more malleable.

Curious, you get to your feet and do a few practice swings; you can feel them in relation to yourself even when you close your eyes. That would be the extra sense, but that is not all.

You have no idea how much time passed exactly, but Lu lowers herself to the ground; the general aura of suppressing shadow is gone, though. Or rather, it simmers just right above her skin, so she may be holding it in.

"Lu," you call out to her, "strike at me!"

She understands what you want and turns her descent into a swoop, cross out and aimed right at your heart. Yet you can tell exactly where it is and how she moves once she nears; heck, you even sense the way her wings shift to adjust her path and aim.

The Handle remains in your hands, unchanged as you wait for her. Then you sidestep the charge and follow your instinct, tapping its tip against the cross as it passes while pushing against those boundaries.

(Blood Soaked Cross: +5000 Base Damage, dice do not matter = 5000 Total Damage

Attack negated)

As you willed it, the momentum transferred is much greater than what you put into the deflection, making your friend's weapon careen to the side. The speed of it pulls Lu along and she only barely pushes herself out of your kick with her arm's thrust.

That was... easy. Much easier than it ever was before. Not only can you do something like that now, but you, heh, magically gained an even greater proficiency.

You do not even turn toward Lu, who caught herself and swings her cross in a wide arc that you can feel exactly; predicting where it will go is easy, so you hop up and land on top of her weapon, your weight pushing the arc of its swing lower.

(Blood Soaked Cross: +5000 Base Damage, dice do not matter = 5000 Total Damage

Attack negated)

Yet it is not enough weight to force the cross into the ground; Lu turns it at a right angle to force you off and follows up with a slap, but you put your palm on the shaft and push it upward. The weapon goes over your head while your own remains in your hands, unused.

(Blood Soaked Cross: +5000 Base Damage, dice do not matter = 5000 Total Damage

Attack negated)

Only then do you turn to your bewildered friend, grinning. "Magic is awesome! I got better just like that and I got a new sense that lets me know exactly when someone attacks nearby!"

Lu huffs at that and shakes her head. "You did this effortlessly where you still struggled just a week ago; humans are weird indeed. We need to test this extensively at a later time."

You nod and make to respond, but the gentle melodies of Fairy magic cut you off. Your head turns to the opening portals and you raise your weapon as dozens of winged soldiers pour out of each one, forming into an army basically right in front of you.

You and Lu stare at the Fairies, who seem just as surprised to see you. A decorated mage in the lead quickly flutters forward and bows at you before you can decide on whether to attack. "I am terribly sorry, ma'am," he apologises toward a bewildered Lu, "we were not meaning to obstruct Heaven's operations, merely passing through toward Dark Star territory. I hope we did not inconvenience you?"

You can tell that the Fairies behind this one are whispering among each other where they think they can get away with it. Some are looking at you, some at your friend. Lu needs a moment to get over her surprise while you take a look over the arrayed army. No golems, for some reason.

You do not like the implications of this and them not recognising Lu; it means you are far earlier than the Valhalla-campaign.

"It is no trouble," your friend finally says.

And as if to prove her wrong, the angry sizzling so indicative of Dark Stars sounds from right behind you, portals disgorging thousands of the beautiful creatures within seconds. No Fairy Slayers, though.

They see the Fairies and the Fairies see them, both sides surprised upon seeing the other. One Soul Reaver in front darts forward to strike at Lu, the surprise of what is normally an ally attacking just like that staying your hand. You can feel its claws nearing your friend, though you are not concerned.

(Shadow Claws: +500 Base Damage, no dice = 500 Total Damage

Attack negated. Soul Reaver jumps right into Dispel-weapon and dies.)

Your friend easily catches its claws, but instead of deflecting them, she merely holds her cross so the Soul Reaver's bulk flies into its flat side and thus the anti-magic field. A terrified screech is all the creature gets out before most of its head and center simply melts away, the rest popping as it was destabilised.

In the ensuing silence, you can not help but sigh and try to think of a plan. The sides are cleared and you stand right between them. With that overeager Soul Reaver, you will have to act a little... which means it is time to help the Fairies. Hopefully no one will remember your presence here at the time you first appear. It should be fine as long as you do not leave too much of an impression with your magic.

Before people ask: I did not note the exact composition of the Dark Star army on purpose. There is no need to single out specific enemy types; if you want to do that anyway, you may limit yourself to the types already encountered. All but Fairy Slayers are present in some quantity.
