Peril's Origin - A Magical Girl Quest [Complete]

I think that we should consider that we are immortal for as long as Lucifer lives.
That is why I would like to keep her inside within the range of our conundrum if that is possible.

In addition to that that she may be better equipped to deal with the Naga than we are, because I doubt that she would let us die. While we are better equipped to deal with the Bazelgeuse.

Stigmata
Stigmata

Also interchangeably referred to as 'stigma'. Originally an Old Elvin word coined a few decades after the first elvin settler's meeting with Angels and Demons, and later adopted by the rest of the LDC in place of the original descriptor. ("Birth From Soul", or "Soul Birth", the old Fairy phrase that is mostly used by scholars that research into such things.) The term itself refers to the spiritual reaction of a sentient being -or similarly complex enough soul, i.e. Divine Beings- either praying or breaking an agreement between their soul and another; a promise.

What is Stigmata?

At it's core, Stigmata is the accumulation of a specific kind spiritual weight via a given action. In this case, praying or breaking of promises. As one prays or makes promises, their soul generates an extra energy that accumulates in what amounts to the spiritual equivalent of a pustule that grows on it's own over time or with reaffirmations of the prayers or promises. These "gatherings" eventually reach different stages of development in different ways.

For gathering of energy generated by Prayers, these masses eventually reach a critical mass upon which they implode with all similar 'nearby' masses. Once implosion occurs, this mass of condensed energy is drawn to Heaven at an arbitrary speed where it is then crystallized into a new 'holy' soul and gives birth to an Angel. This energy can take along with it memories and knowledge from the souls that gave rise, but nominally do little else to the parent souls.

For gathering of energy generated by Promises, the energy amounted is equivalent to the weight and importance of the given promise to the one holding the promise. The more important, the more energy accumulated. When the promise is broken, the "gathering" ignites instead of implodes, being drawn to Hell to be reassembled into a demon. Much like Angels, this energy takes thoughts and memories along with it for the ride, but again does little else to the parent soul(s).

What does Stigmata mean to Angels and Demons?

Surprisingly little... on the surface. Something one must keep in mind is that Angelic energy and Infernal energy that generate their respective entities is actively hostile to the other. And even after being born, Angels and Demons still retain the spiritual energies that gave birth to them. This means that at any point if they generate energy of the opposite kind, it can rapidly have detrimental effects on their physical health since they are heavily spiritual beings. For example if a demon prays, they can find themselves suffering minor nausea, maybe a fever if they're unlucky. If they keep praying the effects can worsen, going from minor inconveniences to major detriments such as numbness or paralysis, moving onto organs shutting down to eventual death.

It is a similar case for Angels. The ignited energy from a problem promise can cause numerous minor effects ranging from headaches and nausea for small broken promises, to getting something similar to a flu from slightly more important promises. But unlike Demons, Angels have a hard cutoff for promises that if an Angel breaks a significant enough promise, the combustion of the gathered energy runs the risk of simply setting the rest of the Angel's soul aflame with hell fire. This?

It's called Falling.

What is Falling?

A fate worse than death for most Angels.

When an Angel breaks a significant enough promise that the combustion of the promise's energy sets the rest of their soul on "fire", it not only burns the Falling Angel, it also causes extreme mutations in the Angel's soul. And considering Angels are highly spiritual beings whose forms are dictated entirely by their souls, this automatically leads to physical mutations of the Angel's body. And between literally burning and the completely random mutations induced by said spirit burning Falling is not always survivable for the involved Angel.

Should an Angel survive their Fall though, they are always mutated into being near-unrecognizable to their original form. Fallen Angels loose their natural 'beauty' that stems from their idealized forms, and instead give a passive feeling of unnaturalness to their enemies that can sometimes make it hard to fight them.

Culturally, Falling is also seen as the worst sin an Angel can make, willing or not. To the point that even if they survive their burning and the resultant mutations they are immediately imprisoned without trial or investigation. Those lucky enough to avoid immediate capture rapidly find themselves the targets of dedicated Angel hunting squads that are more than willing to chase them into the ground to get their hands on them. Though there have been cases of Fallen seeking refuge in non-angelic factions or simply fleeing the LDC entirely.

The imprisonment itself would be similar to internment camps if it wasn't so rare for an angel to fall. Most the time it comes out to being locked away into a small isolated structure out in an otherwise classified location. They're then left there until the isolation ends up causing them to go insane or commit suicide. Or make a break for it, though that rarely ends well for anyone involved.

It's probably because you came up with a situation none of us has any real idea how to deal with, please be kind and let the upcoming fight last long enough to give us some clues.

So uh... The plan didn't actually include a plan for default approach to Bagelgoose here. So Heidi is on autopilot. While in incandescently furious "hit it 'til it dies" mode.

She may explode a couple times.

You are Adelheid Schmeling. Human, Magical Girl, time traveler.

And right now, you are pissed like you have never been before.

Lu's magic healed your wounds, but you can see some rough patches of skin that remained as scars. This little shit of a monster just ambushed you and blew you up. And it couldn't even be bothered to be a suicide bomber, no, it is still there, screaming challenges at you.

You grit your teeth, a moment of reason making you bellow out "Conundrum!" to at least get some protection going. Not that it will do much, but you are beyond caring at the moment.

"This is-"
"I don't care, it's as good as dead anyway."

You don't give Lu the time to explain, you saw enough of that thing to get the gist of it anyway. Your friend makes to speak again, but that is when you charge ahead, weapon changing form to your trusted spear; Aetheric Tide ought to be better than the lightsaber, you are less likely to get hit by the full brunt of those explosions with more reach.

Not that you have to care much about them, Lu just showed that it can not put you down for good no matter what it does.

You meet the charging monster with your own charge, easily vaulting over its attempt to bite you with your spear and striking back with a snarl.

Your spear strikes the monster's neck thrice as you fly over it; magic lashes out and draws long gashes into its hide, eliciting a bellow that is almost drowned out by not one but two explosions. Eh, not that it matters. The shockwaves are buffered by Conundrum and you sail over the creature without harm, coming to land behind it.

It snarls and turns, only for Lu to swoop over the creature and pluck her cross out of its hide; she makes no motion to attack though, leaving the creature to you. Just as well, you have some aggression to work off.

Before your opponent gets to actually fight back, you step forward and start to stab its head in rapid succession; its scales begin exploding, but you could not care less as you lay on the pain and make sure to stab it in the eye once you get the chance. Bastard can try to bite things now.

Heidi is dead Rage Against Fate wants a word with you)

One, two, three, adjust, one, two, three, step forward, one, two three, step forward, one, two three.

You do not brave the explosions your rapid-fire strikes draw, but ignore them. They do not matter, all you have to care about is keeping up the staccato of stabs until the last one throws you back after all. Your whole body burns in a way you simply crush into insignificance before it even registers fully; now is not the time.

At least the monster is reeling and screeching, seeing that you managed to land a hit square in its eye; with your magical extension, the potentially blinding wound was turned into a bloody gouge in its head.

You fly through the air like a ragdoll but manage to curl up into a ball; impacting the ground is harsh and hurts even more, but you ignore that in favour of your burning anger. Eyes focussed on the monster and nose filled with the scent of charred flesh, yours most likely, you find the thing swinging itself into the air.

Well, fuck you too, buster.

You are still in the process of getting up when it turns around after corkscrewing into the air; not fast enough, you need more speed if you want to get at it. So you consume Reaper's Will as it is the first weapon that comes to mind, uncaring for the use it could have been.

The additional mana hits your system like a splash of cold water, jolting you back into action and to your feet. "ARGENT STAR!" you roar at the heavens that shelter this beast. Then, before the first bunch even left your presence, you channel more mana into the lingering iteration and have it follow the first. This guy is not getting away, you make sure of that by targeting its wings in particular with two spheres each.

The monster tries to lean out of the way, a sight which makes you grin. It is not fast enough and not nimble enough to pull it off. You already use the split-second to charge forward to where the beast is going to fall.

The first volley hits its body and explodes violently, tearing off large chunks of scaly hide and grey flesh beneath; the wounds left are deep and quickly spill pinkish red blood. Then your second volley hits before the thing can even scream out its pain.

(Argent Star: +715 Base Damage, +80 dice, x8 Purge And Anti-Air = 6,360 Total Damage

Bazelgeuse Health: 50,306 - 24,936 = 25,370)

This time the explosions tear its wings to tatters, leaving nothing but grey-pink chunks of the strong membranes. The monster screams as it begins to fall, toward the ground where you are almost in position.

You just grin and push your body to make the last few dozen metres, then turn it into a burning slide on your mangled legs while aligning your spear at a right angle to the flat earth. A glance is spared for the falling monster and you push yourself a little further so its neck only hits your legs instead of your rump when it slams down. Time for gravity to do its thing.

Bazel expires, and messily at that

Heidi takes a lot of crushing damage from an oversized monster crash-landing on her legs, but that is healed away by Vampire and her Super's restoration; Heidi is back to full Health)

The earth shakes as its giant body impacts, your legs being almost crushed to paste under its neck alone and sending a spike of pain through you.

But that does not matter. The only thing that does is the literal spike you hold up until the very last moment; your enemy's head slams onto it with all the force of a long fall, driving it up and through the monster's head in a single fluid chop; you only barely get your hands out from under it in time, the cacophony of crushed earth and screeching monster deafening.

Then its head explodes outward from the force behind the impact on your spear, splattering you in monster bits while the Handle gleams in the light, revealed within its gory sheath. Its speartip was bent and crushed by the impact.

Soothing life force starts to run through your body as you pull on your legs; the monster's weight drove them into the ground, which means you can actually get free of it instead of having to lift the body off.

As you do, your bones, flesh, and skin knit themselves back together under the torrent of life force you are absorbing from the monster. The pain you managed to ignore so far fades away before it really registers, which you are thankful for.

You take a deep breath and get up at the same time as you dismiss your weapon to get it free; a spurt of pinkish blood comes out of the newly revealed hole, but it does not splash far enough to hit more than your toes after its impact on the ground. Yuck.

This was... intense. You blink once, twice, and take in the carnage surrounding yourself. It is not that you did not understand what you were doing, but your mind was set to a scary degree of being uncaring.

The ground is torn where the monster stood before, the many explosions you triggered having turned a large patch of grass to ash. Its corpse is... a mess, a lot more mutilated than you would normally want. Effective, sure, but it still makes you shiver.

Crimson traces coat the immediate area, footsteps and a metres-long trail leading almost exactly to where you are. You, uh, must have been injured worse than you thought.

Your moment of horrified tranquility is broken by something buzzing, as well as a mostly naked Lu landing right next to you with narrowed eyes. "Are you calm again?"

You are still breathing heavily from that episode, but nod. "Yeah, k-kind of." Your voice is shaky, too. "Today sucks."

"So it does." Lu looks you over carefully, then nods calmly. The buzzing is getting louder "Just some minor scars, at least. The Naga is near, make rea-"

The buzzing cuts her off, reaching its apex and forming a translucent sphere of mana around you; not a chance to escape, it seeps into your body and does something you can not describe. It feels as if it turned you inside out except not really, making your stomach churn while Lu freezes. Her power immediately retracts into herself, wide eyes directed at you.

Turning to look for the source of the buzzing, you find the Naga standing in place, at least fifty metres away and poised as if to lunge; its eyes are focussed on you and the mana that was so abundant around it is gone for a moment. More follows soon after, but only once the buzzing stops.

The Naga remains motionless while Lu's hand lands on your bare shoulder. "Gabriel mentioned that. What this being just did is invert all healing powers aimed at you. Do not use your spear, under any circumstance. I will aid you with this one."

Oh.

"Shit."

"Quite."

There goes your invincibility, and there comes the Naga again, skulking forward cautiously. You summon the Handle back to your hands and prepare yourself, stepping away from the corpse to get some freedom of movement.

"Hate's Seal," Lu notes as it nears step by step. Feathers separate from her wings and blow toward the approaching creature in an almost gentle wave; you can see the magical fields around them and know they will end the fight.

(Hate's Seal hits Naga. Naga is unaffected)

Except that... nothing happens. It looks as if Lu's magic is just sucked into the mana font surrounding the Naga. Of course it can't be that easy.

Lu just shrugs at the unspoken words between you two. "Worth a try."

Welp, turns out we didn't need to have the two behemoths fight each other. We can take one out on our own. Not that we're still not out of danger. Naga being the bigger threat.

Might be best to start spending the EXP plan

Um, why?

As for plans, I am surprised it was Reaper's Will that was sealed, then again who knows if it would have been effective VS Naga's magic sucking properties.

So we have our sword and our scythe.

Naron, would Dispel pulse from Lucifer erase the Negative Space effect, and what would be the side effects of this when applied to Defiance and Lu herself?

For one, Heidi went full offensive and thus got herself 'killed', then healed back. Which is what made the Naga catch on and drop Negative Space on her before even getting into combat range.

For two, due to being unguided, she sealed the first weapon she thought of, which was the lightsaber.

Naron, would Dispel pulse from Lucifer erase the Negative Space effect, and what would be the side effects of this when applied to Defiance and Lu herself?
Dispel does remove NS. However, the pulse would also remove Heidi's Conundrum as well.

In addition, Lu is unaware that Heidi (as a human) is unaffected by the side effects of Dispel; Heidi in turn is unaware that Lu does not know that. With the Naga being this close, Heidi will likely need to sacrifice her first strike to discuss that with Lu.

So I'm guessing that the effect of Arcane Overflow is somethingaalong the lines of "if Naga doesn't cast a spell in a turn, it is immune to spells during that turn" (assuming that Hate's Seal counts as being used in the same turn as Hegemony of the Food Chain).

Also, sounds like Stardust Striker is our best bet for this fight unless we can convince Lu to stall it long enough for us to untransform and retransform so that our Base Resilience and lightsaber come back.

Spending some EXP is probably a good idea.

Edit:
Layering Arcane Slash over Stygian Tempest might allow it to hit through whatever Naga is doing via Sudden Death, but layering it over Stardust Striker to take advantage of Supremacy would likely work even better.

How about stabbing the Naga in the face with Stardust Striker and then expanding it into Stygian Tempest it might be able to absorb magical attacks, and that means that we need murder it with melee weapons.

[] Stab it in the with Stardust Striker when a opportunity for it presents itself.

@Naron
IC, would Heidi find it okay to retreat advance towards victory by using Lu's Flight to gain some distance so that she can safely untransform and retransform?

Why play fair when the enemies are cheating :V

She would be fine with doing that. Just, uh, keep in mind that if Naga has no other ranged measures, it might continue to put Negative Space on people.

I was going to ask if those 90 Resilience would a real difference, but the mental image of fighting coated only in blood, while screaming at our foes does not sound very magical-girl.
And that is terrible.
Could we use voyage to make a quick jump home preferably a few seconds in the past, get washed up with Lucifer and jump back to the moment that we left?
I think that if we try to get clothed then Lu should have the same luxury.

Question: Does Negative Space affect all healing on everyone in range, including the Naga? Because if so, then we have a neat combo spell to take advantage of here that wouldn't apply elsewhere...

Question: Does Negative Space affect all healing on everyone in range, including the Naga? Because if so, then we have a neat combo spell to take advantage of here that wouldn't apply elsewhere...
It's a status condition placed on a target (in this case, Heidi).

Only the one suffering from the status condition is affected by the healing inversion.

Well, I guess we deserve that for not having a real plan. Even if "use reaper's will and do not under any circumstances use Aethyric Tide" was my opinion on weaponry.

On a related note, I cannot believe that worked. Situational damage boosts, I guess?

Also, Defy the Rules beats Large enemy. Did we know that?

Also, I was right. The Naga is so much more dangerous. As for plans...We can skill-negate half of it's attacks. That's not enough to survive dropping conundrum to have Lu get rid of negative space.

We can't do significant damage to it without reaper's will. Maybe we can gamble with Striker-Slash (average ~3k damage) or just hope Lu does enough damage.

We could try getting in close and tangling up its weapons so it can't use its full complement of weapons, then negate the ones that make it through. Pretty risky to rely on, though. All of its weapons are nasty. Bite kills us, claws have a chance to stun and can hurt us, crit strike makes me nervous, and we don't know about the tail at all. The horns are probably the least bad, and that means little. If we had reaper's will, maybe we could cut off the tail. Maybe a levelled Stygian Tempest could manage it too?

Alternatively, we could spend exp. Health is a slightly better safety net. Pass. Conundrum is probably out - we got a pretty good roll already. More APT is nice, but probably not worth more than 1 more. Arcane slash levels give 300ish damage on average, Starlight striker gives about half that, but has more of a chance to have better abilities, I think. Also, it's lower level so we can spend more. We could get it as high as...exactly level 20. That's definitely enough to get something even with the completely unknown milestones. Alternatively, we can push Stygian Tempest up, I guess? That's just gambling on our guesses for their abilities, though. I'm personally in favor of Starlight Striker.

...actually, would a Laser attack layered with Arcane Slash get replicated in full? Kinda curious now. If it did, that would be an average about 12k, with a much higher chance of exploding high enough. And also make both laser and the Echo exploit much better. A note for later, probably. Relying on something we just got is kinda iffy. We can hit level...17 striker if we get it. Or we could get it to 15 and pick up an action, which is probably better? (Milestones again...) So leveled, it's...more like 22k average without new abilities.

Or we could just withdraw and have Lu dispel us/retransform and fight it later.

So, four unvoted plans:

[] Plan Close In
-[] Switch to Starlight Striker and try to stay close enough that it can't bring all of it's weapons to bear.
-[] Focus on negating it's attacks, interspersing Arcane Strike when possible.
-[] Prioritize avoiding the bite, then the claws, then the tail.
[] [EXP] Plan Stay and Fight (1550 EXP)
-[] Starlight Striker 8-15 (770 EXP)
-[] The Handle 12-15 (390 EXP)
-[] Arcane Strike 12->15 (390 EXP)

[] Plan Laser Kite
-[] Charge the Starlight Striker with its new power while staying at range, deflecting attacks, and avoiding melee combat with the Naga. When heavily charged, dart in and strike it with Arcane Slash. Withdraw and repeat until it dies.
-[] If possible, ask Lu to cover you when you close.
[] [EXP] Plan Laser (1660 EXP)
-[] Glimmering Dust (500 EXP)
-[] Starlight Striker 8->15 (770 EXP)
-[] The Handle 12->15 (390 EXP)

[] Plan Nope
-[] Try to withdraw with Lu, so she can dispel the inversion and you can retransform.
-[] If you manage that and decide to continue the fight, Recast Conundrum and engage with Reaper's Will. Try to stay close enough that it can't bring all of it's weapons to bear, and cut off the tail if possible. Do not let it bite you.

[] Plan Absolutely Not
-[] Voyage somewhen vaguely nearby. You can find it again later.

Any concerns/ideas/etc?

If we are going to fight it in close quarters,
Then we could maybe attack it from the front while Lu attacks it from the back-side.

Also would the Suppression under the 'other' tab work on the vampire ability of Aetheric Tide?
