Peril's Origin - A Magical Girl Quest [Complete]

[X] March of the Dead

[X] EXP-Save It

Doing probably the same, for probably the same reasons. While my big desire is to purchase Shared Conundrum (come on, it's a buff, it's a buff that may synchronise well enough with our lone sorcerer's stuff, and it's a buff that goes on our boyfriend :3 ), I don't think we'll encounter anyone or anything horrible enough to warrant it immediately.

-Damage Barrier: Second layer, sits directly on the skin of a protected creature, or forms a half-translucent wall when spread over an area. It does not shine.
Defiant Streak
-Battle continuation; if Health goes below 0, a bit of Defiance's mana is converted into life energy to keep her body alive; it is fickle and only lasts for a few seconds, but it allows her body to go along with the force of her will instead of breaking down; if regular life force is added in high enough quantities to replace the imitation (Health goes above 0), the body returns to normal functionality
--Defiance still takes damage as normal and can be healed by outside sources as normal
--the Save can trigger any number of times in the same battle, provided that Defiance returns to positive Health in-between
--complete disintegration of the body is also prevented, in that the magic stops any wider attacks from destroying more than the surface area
Naron, according to mechanics corner, Damage Barrier explicitly "forms a half-transculent wall when spread over an area"... Does this mean that Conundrum can already set up areas that it affects (as a soft exploit), or would that still require a Boost-All?

Also, does Defiant Streak and/or Adelheid's anything else allow Heidi to push through the damage and allow full functionality? Because I'm wondering if Heidi could have chosen to accept the killing blow from Hildr in order to follow the remaining War Angel, and used the spear to recover the lost health?

Let's see. Heidi does 1010 damage per offensive string with a spear under those conditions, so 3030 on her first hit, not counting the possible I'm not going to die here additional situational modifiers. War Angel under those circumstances would have taken maybe 2500 damage, healing Heidi for 1250-ish. Meanwhile, Hildr's backstab would have dealt give or take 8000-ish base damage, so would have forced Heidi to -3100 health, give or take... Nope, sorry. Would require (presumably possible) 2 APT to kill a War Angel, 4 APT (8400, 6300, 4300 after Valkyr Armor and overall damage reduction) to kill a Valkyrie Warrior, and presumably 2 APT to reach every victim. That (if we seal one weapon) barely gives enough APT to actually recover 1500+2100=3600 health, and become a walking wounded.

As for my reactions to the update.

Overall, the one method we could have used to deal with War Angels (and get at least one of the optionals succeed) would have been if we (I) specified we would use Overdrive Seal to kill the War Angels faster. I didn't, so we didn't. Oh well, hindsight. I thought our opponents would be more determined to kill us than to bypass us... Actually, why did Defiance worry about being stabbed in the back if she was guaranteed to have first move? She could have easily used her Agility to slip down, and the Valkyrie would have had to cut her way through, wouldn't she??? Any explanations please?

I do not regret purchasing levels of lightsaber - it made things go all the smoother (by all accounts both unnamed Valkyrie Commanders died as fast as they did exactly because we had those additional 850 damage per attack). While we didn't exactly get results from the increased level of Argent Star, I still think it worthwhile.

I also intent to purchase another level of Argent Star whenever we retain 500+ exp after purchase, until we get another ability upgrade (I'm still guessing it will acquire Omni-Magic, in fact possibly as early as next 2 levels, 4 as the next most likely guess), or until we reach level 20 (and another tick of Perpetual Caster). Similarly, my guess about Conundrum is that its next logical upgrade is Auto Max Charge, as early as level 20 (which would roughly double our current defensive potential). And I guess Slash Hell is in future for Aetheric Tide.

I presume we still have the Mana Batteries for our other missions?

It requires Boost-All, I just did not feel like removing that part from the notes I copied.

She did not know how exactly it worked yet. But yes, Heidi can push through the pain.
Also, no. She only would have taken the risk if you had unlocked Guardian's Excellence, which improves her skill-negation. Due to previous decisions which prioritised fast one-shot takedowns, you did not manage to gather enough negations to fulfill the item's requirements at the time, and still do not.

Actually, why did Defiance worry about being stabbed in the back if she was guaranteed to have first move? She could have easily used her Agility to slip down, and the Valkyrie would have had to cut her way through, wouldn't she??? Any explanations please?
Because you specified to fight to kill directly, not to go under and intercept anyone who tries to go downward. Heidi did not think of it on her own.

Plus, she can not run even remotely as fast as Valkyries or War Angels fly; if she ran after the one that made it through, Hildr would have followed through the hole they left. Then it would have either been Heidi constantly looking back for whether Hildr shoots arrows and thus slowing down, or her focussing on the War Angel and getting an arrow into her back.

I presume we still have the Mana Batteries for our other missions?
Yeah.

Omake: Hildr's Reflection (Canonicity to be determined)
Hildr, in turn, nods. "Very well. I shall commit it to memory. You fought like a raging beast, and I feel it was not for your own sake. You went after Heaven's children first." It is merely an observation, yet you can not help but grit your teeth; which seems to be all the answer she needs. "I see. Sometimes we come upon those of the darkness that hold compassion like that. If we meet again, we shall properly duel. Once I am prepared to face you, Adelheid. It would be an honour if you were to remember me as well. I am Hildr, squadron commander of the Valkyr Legion."

These words combined with what Wikipedia said about Hildr in the myths inspired me.
I was really surprised how Christianity interacted with Norse mythology.

The new alliances brought new live into Valhalla. The presence of light could be felt in practically every hallway now. And butterfly wings had joined the feathered ranks. Causing the younger Valkyries to excitedly mumble about how the one big push would finally give them Sheol.
Hildr couldn't remember the last time this many people drank mead in the halls of Valhalla.

She took a horn filled with mead from one of the many tables and retreated into her personal quarters. Even the Valkyrie for all their glory had a needed to rest.
Most Valkyrie where not afraid to get incredibly drunk in public, but a leader had to take care for their image. Most Valkyries where not afraid of getting wasted, there was nothing that strengthen the bonds quite like a huge amount of alcohol and a honorable dual over a minor slight.
But a leader couldn't do that, it would effect morale if Hildr were to cry, get angry at one of her subordinates or came to show any other sign at weakness. Most of the time she would join the festivities and drink, but she would have to be careful to hold her mask of power up.

She sat down in front of a bronze mirror that had been rewarded to her by elves after a glorious battle.
Two feathered wings not of her own wrapped around her enveloping her in their warmth. Someone had snuck behind her, Those wings belonged to the only one that was allowed to do that.

"We met a worthy opponent on the field today" She told Skioi "She had derived her strength from a honorable motive, even if she had chosen to fight alongside the darkness." Hildr closed her eyes "It may be my hubris, but I saw myself reflected in her eyes."
"A demon that was like you? Isn't it common for Demons to be like Valkyries?" Her lover asked, while placing his chin on her shoulder in order to see the refection of Hildr's face in the mirror as she answered his question

"I don't think that she is a demon, she looked more like an elf." Hildr corrected " She had won; the hellgate had opened and I was forced into a retreat, but it was clearly visible in her eyes that she had lost when one of heavens angels had slipped through. It brings up memories"

Skioi raised an eyebrow "That time that I lost my teeth because I told the Valkyries wouldn't survive without the help of heaven or do you mean when you or the first time you led a siege against Valhalla."
Hirldr turned around to show her a satisfied smile, "That time when I thought Gondul why using dishonorable trickery to strengthen your ranks is a bad idea" It didn't escape the attention of the angel that his Valkyrie had lost her smile in the moment that she paused.
"My long live desensitized me from death" She said burying herself deeper into his embrace "The look in the eyes of my opponent adelheid reminded me however, of one simple fact. A war is only possible when people choose to fight together shoulder to shoulder."

She did not know how exactly it worked yet. But yes, Heidi can push through the pain.

Due to previous decisions which prioritised fast one-shot takedowns, you did not manage to gather enough negations to fulfill the item's requirements at the time, and still do not.
I can't say that fast takedowns were a mistake, though. On this mission, in the case of Faeries and War Angels we were perfectly justified, leaving us with only Valkyries and Valkyrie Commanders as viable skill-negation options. Valkyrie Warriors weren't exactly strong enough to warrant it, and we've only encountered Commanders twice, and both times were on a tight schedule (War Angels present). Previous combat encounters (Orux, Lucifer first meeting, Demon Ground Commanders, Lucifer touch-the-wings duel, Faerie Death Squad) only the Lucifer duel gave us ample opportunity to milk negations.

Also, given how Valkyries could and did summon reinforcements by sounding the alarm, delaying dealing with them on this mission wouldn't have been prudent.
Because you specified to fight to kill directly, not to go under and intercept anyone who tries to go downward. Heidi did not think of it on her own.

...Hmmm. Fair enough. While I think you may have inadvertently biased me towards staying upside the canopy by having Defiance move towards the tip of the tree to draw attention, so I didn't think of the "go under" option either, I think doing so would have worked out. Maybe. We'd have still shot the Faeries first thing, then dove down (i.e. avoided the attacks of Valkyr Commanders) and went to meet the War Angels. We'd probably be able to kill two War Angels while they were still passing through, and be in position to attack the last one instead of needing to catch up with Hildr on our six. The other maybe is if I specified Defiance using her speed burst from sealing her weapons in order to catch up to War Angels as fast as she could.

Thing is, you brought yourself into this position by voting to set up immediately. It may have turned out differently with another plan.

You also kept specifying to one-shot kill as much as possible on the way instead of, for example, negating their attacks and letting your soldiers just roll over the bunch once their Flight is sealed. Sure, just AS-ing them is easier, but in this case it came back to bite you. Six negations are not that difficult to get, but no plan since the beginning of this offensive actually mentioned to negate, just to use spellfire or intercepting.

The other maybe is if I specified Defiance using her speed burst from sealing her weapons in order to catch up to War Angels as fast as she could.
Rather not. ApT regularly do not have an influence on movement speed; at least not before they begin to approach triple digits.

I almost forgot that we had been aiming for this Shared Conundrum.
If we had this one when last battle then our foot soldiers would have survived.

So I'm changing my vote.

on a reread I remembered we do not have that trained yet iirc.
at least it's listed as idea in the Active Spell Exploits.
Pointing to this active, trained exploit:
-String several attacks together like a multi-hit (each attack still costs an action) [1/1]
In combination with this passive one:
-Layering the spell over a multi-hit only attaches its effects to the first hit; if Echo triggers in this situation, it layers itself over an additional hit per trigger.

That is what happened. Heidi spent all of her six actions for one devastating blow of six hits, consequences be damned. Which is why the actual spell and those two echoes layered themselves over the first half of the barrage.

Alright, that was a nice turnout. Votes are closed and Heidi will go kill some golems.

2.15 Preparing for Battle
[] March of the Dead

Once Argus explained the two missions to you in a bit of detail, you are rather certain which one you want. "I'll help with the golems," you tell the knight without hesitation.

Golems are spirits bound to objects, that much you know; they are often used for manual labour, especially by the Elvin Empire. In this case, it seems the Fairies make use of them as a frontline to protect their mages.

Moreover, golems are not actually alive, at least not in the general sense. You feel that you can destroy them without having to feel guilty afterward.

Argus merely nods and motions for your diminished team. "You will back up two other squadrons consisting mainly of ground forces, though interspersed with Dark Stars and a few Hell Beasts. It took a while, but we now have a contingent of Fairy Slayers at our disposal."

You can not help but frown, though. Dark Stars are good, but Fairies are strong unless you can end them immediately; their golems will likely prevent that. Just two squadrons sounds like a suicide mission. "That's a lot less troops than I thought there would be."

It takes you a moment to realise, then another to not congratulate yourself. You just pulled off the thing where you make an observation but make it be a question at the same time. You could never do that before!

Argus picks up on it and nods. "That is correct. The enemies you will face are a subgroup of their main force, which I will engage with greater numbers. Do not come close if you value your life." His tone brooks no argument, which only makes you want to argue even more. To your surprise, he seems to notice the twitch in your expression and elaborates. "As much as you have grown since joining my sister, this force is led not only by experienced battlemages, it also has an old Imperial Golem, a marvel of Fey engineering which they no longer build. Everything else, I would trust you could defeat. This, I believe requires my personal attention."

Your eyebrow twitches again, but you hold your tongue. At least you got good enough for that, even though this is so infuriating.

(Bonus goal added: Find a way to kill the Imperial Golem to stick it to Argus)

Nonetheless, maybe there is a way. You cast a glance at the General, who seems to wait for you. Maybe. Ugh, that helmet makes it impossible to tell what he is thinking. "Just in case, what are those Imperial Golems capable of?"

Argus stays silent for a long moment, hopefully unaware of your real intentions behind the question. Paoras already started rounding up the Hell Beasts for you, as Mokutuuk is still napping while she paws at his snout, so you have a bit of time. The knight motions for one of the giant trees in the distance.

"Aside from being half the size of any of those trees and with mass to match, they carry blades as sharp as yours." You doubt he means Stardust Striker, so that leaves only Reaper's Will. Joy. "In addition, despite all that mass, they move as fast as I do and are capable of adapting to their opponents. Repeated spellfire fails and they even grow more skilled in leaps and bounds as you face them. Like all combat golems built by Fairies, this line is also capable of flying and charging at great speeds."

You start to see why he cautioned you against it now. If that thing is as fast as him, it is probably faster than you. Still, maybe.

"Oh, I forgot to mention: they also shoot a number of condensed mana beams, a power which they can pass on to lesser golems in their vicinity."

...

Okay. So they have lasers, too. Now it is a really big maybe, but you might be able to deal with it. If you have a good idea, at least.

"I get it." You say that, but give not a single word about not trying for the thing later. You will see then. "Paoras?"

Your call leads to an affirmative cheer from a bit away, as Mokutuuk finally stands up with the hybrid on top of him. "I'm good, we're ready to head out! Come climb up, let's ride!" She waves down at the both of you, effortlessly balancing herself whenever the Hell Beast moves as if she... were a part of him. Curious.

Moreover, the sight has another connection click in your mind. You look back and forth between your two Hell Beasts, then toward the single Dark Star under your command. You and them, and Paoras, all have the mana batteries still at the ready. There is just five of you now, and the Sorcerer can fly on his own.

Argus watches everything without any visible emotion.

You start to grin.

. . .
IDENTIFIED BREAK LINE
. . .

The troops you are reinforcing await you at the edge of the clearing, still in sight of the main staging ground.

What they apparently did not expect is two Hell Beasts barreling down from the sky with roars, to land right in front of everyone and rear up. You are not all that good at making yours do as you want, but it seems to follow Mokutuuk's lead well enough.

Either way, you and Paoras both remain seated on top of the creatures, looking down at the surprised faces. There are even some you recognise; Dragul and Orux are both here, neither of them a part of the actually impressed crowd. Spoilsports, this is the coolest thing you thought of since ending up in this time.

"I heard you're hunting some golems, do you mind if we join?" you call out with a grin that is answered by cheers, both from below and by your side. Paoras seems happy about the silliness, so you call that a win.

Dragul and a half dozen other commanding types come over as you dismount, the Hell Beast shaking itself as if to welcome your absence. Rude. You ignore the creature and exchange nods with the leadership for this mission; technically, you probably outrank them on the grounds that you can kick a lot more ass than them, but you really do not want to take command here.

Amidst the commanding Demons is one Dark Star though, which gives you pause. You saw a few more, but their colouration was so different that they did not catch your eye before. Fairy Slayers, it turns out, are the same... breed of Dark Star as Epsilon Aaron.

Your Brand Craft instructor is not among them, though; these are all in reds and greens, with one more yellow than everything else. It is jarring how well you can keep them apart just based on their colouration. Mana has so many more colours and tones.

The troops are holding conversations in the background while you clear the strategic concerns; in general, you are expected to reinforce the allied formation where you see fit. Preferably, they want you to bring the golems down to the ground, where the foot soldiers can mob them. Fairies were not seen with the group you are after, but one can never know.

The main goal is to prevent this splinter force from reinforcing the Imperial Golem toward the center, so killing as many as possible is the priority.

Well, you can do that. You have some Hell Beasts at hand that will follow the two you are riding, if only because Paoras spent her time aiding her mount in establishing dominance over the other pack's leader. As in, once you realise what is happening, the bigger Hell Beast is squirming under his paw while your tiny friend cheers from atop his head.

You just sigh and cover your eyes with one hand. "Just why am I still surprised...."

The commanders keep their composure, though you can see Dragul smirk. He is not worth reacting to right now, though. "Are we waiting for anyone else?"

"None," the vampire tells you calmly. "If we start marching now and make haste, we should reach the force we are to attack shortly after the other two battlegroups. General Argus will not begin his attack until they are all drawn into combat."

"Alright, lead on then."

You offer everyone another nod and turn around to your own mount; it eyes you calmly, but does not protest when you beckon it over. Neither does it actually try to throw you off when you climb on. Yet the beast will probably not make it easy this time, either. You just grab your reins and make yourself as comfortable as you can on the hard skin. You did not even have time to install a saddle, and your late troopers did not need them.

Unfair is what it is.

You just grumble and shout to your friend: "Paoras, get back in line! We're leading the Hell Beast wing!"

"Okayyyy!!" Mokutuuk immediately lumbers back to your side while everyone else forms up and begins marching toward the treeline. This will be fun; your Hell Beasts can fly in the forest and could do it before, but they can not fly nearly as fast lest they slam into something. At least you no longer need to consider stealth; it will not matter much with the troops on the ground.

"My orders, leader?"

You blink and turn to the Dark Star, then your attention wanders to the troopers as your own mount takes to the air. The lone Sorcerer keeps pace with you easily, though you wonder what to tell them. "Can you boost everyone, or is that too much space to cover?"

They turn to take in the mass with their giant eye again, tentacles twitching and flashing brighter for a moment. "I am afraid I can not serve with that kind of coverage. Maybe if we stacked them on top of each other in packs of three or four." They start to muse, much to your amusement. Well, you can probably think of something.

You just need to decide on that one's priority.

. . .
IDENTIFIED BREAK LINE
. . .

It takes a while that you use to think about what to do with your temporary attack wing. Paoras rides her own Hell Beast like a natural, probably cheating with her powers, while you have no trouble standing on your own; fighting will be difficult up here, but you can at least use your mana manipulation to prevent others from doing things.

Not to mention your spellcasting; word of you might have spread by now, so they would know to go to ground once you show up. Then again, those are golems; you really can not tell how intelligent they are, or how well one can program them.

On the other hand, these are Fairy golems. You never met any before all of this, but your father told you they are incredible engineers in their own fields. Same as the Dark Stars apparently are.

Either way, after half an hour of following the main force in the twilight of the forest, your ears are confronted with a nasty crash in the distance. You blink and look ahead.

Were it just your old normal eyes, you probably would not have seen anything aside from an ominous glow. With the general magical augment your eyes developed however, not to mention your magic sight, you can see it quite clearly.

It is huge, easily twenty metres tall and massive. The core in its center has more containment fields than any other part, making it difficult to see without turning your additional sense off. Mana runs through its form and a gleaming blade rests at its side.

The golem carefully leans out of another tree's way after having run over one, the Fairies fluttering around it tiny specks of light in comparison. Many smaller golems swarm around the large model, far less bright on the magical end.

You only saw them because you are above ground, and you doubt they saw you. The distance is vast.

Then however, you realise the small golems barely stand out within the ambient mana of the forest. You blink and look around, then find more blending into the surroundings right up ahead. Together with a band of Fairies, about a dozen in total, hiding further up under some kind of field.

It is still a bit of time before the clash. Curious. "Paoras?"

Your friend quickly steers closer so you can talk without shouting, the Hell Beasts shifting their heights so they do not bother each other; it is convenient that they can fly without beating their wings.

You point up toward where the Fairies are. "See anything there?" She looks, leans left and looks, leans right, looks again, and shakes her head.

Curiously, the crowd of Fairies moves sideways. They might be keeping an eye on you.

Taking that in, you pat her head. "Don't worry, I just thought I saw something." Some misdirection just in case they heard you, it can not hurt. Either way, the battle will begin soon.

As if on cue, the golems drop to the ground. Well, so much for wondering whether you were recognised. There are dozens of them here, far more than the Fairies controlling them.

Either way, you can work with that. "Okay, let's get started. The golems are right ahead." You still have a bit of time to give your orders, but the melee will start soon after. Just in case, you both armor up as well.

A relic of times the Home Realms are happy to forget. The old Fae Empire created the core of these monstrosities from sacrificing magic-charged newborns, allowing them to adapt to their enemy. Abhorrent but oh so effective, especially when created en mass. Now there are only a few thousand left, yet they are still one of the most fearsome weapons ever seen.

At any point should their opponent's entire spell list be rendered ineffective, the Imperial Golem becomes immune to their opponent's magic.
Does this trigger against entities who have magic but do not have a spell list (their only magic is passive)?

Yes, but I think I mentioned before that they are generally unwilling to METEOR their own guys or their stuff.
Throwing down small-scale extinction events is fine in the desert that generations of demonic feet have already trampled the life out of, it is not fine in the middle of the forest.

I would not think so. We should ask @Crystalwatcher for clarification, he made that Ability.

For situations like that, there'll be a stacking MM debuff that'll eventually render the Golem immune. In return though it'll take longer for it to become immune than active magic attacks would.

The specifics for that I'll leave up to Naron since it's his quest.
