Damnit we all regretted it after we voted for it. But there may have been no right answer.

And there are too many ways to die here goddammit.

[ ] Call out towards the whistling.
Stupid naive choice. Who would do this except very silly people.

[ ] Throw something in the direction of the whistling.
I can just feel the sudden quiet and subsequent jumpscare.

[ ] Stay quiet and listen to the whistling.
Ehh....I don't really want to freeze up ether but it might tell us something....

[ ] Keep the group moving. Try to put some distance between yourselves and whatever was whistling.
Maybe? Be careful where you step and also where you're touching. Just because we've only seen BEARTRAPS doesn't mean there can't be trip wires or other traps on tree trunks or whatever.

[ ] Walk towards the whistling.
WHY.

[ ] Run.
Don't turn your backs on the thing! Also panicked decision usually kills off at least somebody. Running probably means a rush.

Also dammit I feel like we're placing so much emphasis on the BEARTRAPS so it might not happen again.

ALL IN ALL I DONT KNOW GODDAMNIT PARANOIA

This was important and you need her to answer you. You cross her arms and give her the sternest look you can muster
Probably 'your'
Briefly you hear Danielle say something to Sierra, but she was speaking to quietly and you were too far away to properly make out what she was saying.
'too'
He said that of we were to come here that way, by the time we got here we would be exhausted and wanted to go back.
'if'
You were incline to agree with Danielle, you all had been walking for what seemed like an eternity. You body ached all over and even being allow to stop for even a minute would be welcomed.
'inclined', 'and being allowed to stop for even a minute would be welcome'.
Sierra, Eli, and Lucas shined them in the direction of where the noise was coming from, but the moment their lights were fixed the sound stopped and started up in a different direction, as if whatever was making it just teleported or something. They would point their lights in the sounds direction again and again
What's 'them'? missing apostrophe.
ALL IN ALL I DONT KNOW GODDAMNIT PARANOIA
Clearly there is only one smart choice.

[X] Join in and start whistling in a duet.

Come on, we *know* this song, it'd be a shame not to!

Edit: wait, what? Someone already came up with the idea? Damn!

Anyway, are we surrounded by the forest from all sides? What about the road we drove by when we came here? If we know the direction of the road, we will eventually cross it and can find the camp by following it. Unless anyone has better suggestions.

What are other landmarks, if any? If we move, we must have a better game plan than to 'run from spooky sounds'.

No, seriously though.

The reasons why we are placing so much emphasis on BEARTRAPS is that A THING does not have to be supernatural to kill us. You don't see 'mauled by a werewolf' or 'whisked away by demons' written in police reports. But mundane things do kill just as surely. Beartraps, steep cliffs, logs that make us dislocate an ankle, armed maniacs... This is why we should not exchange some vague threat of whistling on a very credible threat of physical injury while running through the night forest.

It is obvious that whatever it is, it's playing with us. How do you put a distance between something that is able to change locations at a whim? Confusing, unnerving and scaring us is the goal. We might try to confront it, wait it out, or attempt to ignore it and be on our way and on guard.

We still have the map, and I don't remember any clouds mentioned (navigation by stars? we might even have a compass on hand). Even if we are lost and can't pinpoint the camp, we know which direction we were going and where the road should be.

[ ] Try to determine which way the road is and go there, trying to get out of the woods in an orderly fashion.
-[ ] Sierra on point.
-[ ] Dani and Eli next.
-[ ] You and Lucas take the rear.

Everyone watches everyone. Sierra first because she's the one who knows something so congrats, girl, you are the glorious leader now. You and Lucas last because you are armed, and Lucas... Well. "You don't have to run faster than the bear to get away." :drevil::V

[X] Stay quiet and listen to the whistling.

Stay silent and we don't let whoever mazed us find us so easily. And have better chances of hearing something approach us.

I don't think he is searching...

I mean, we have the flashlights to point out exactly where we are, and he definitely knows where they are directed towards (thus the directional changes in whistling). We also have no problems hearing him approach us. No, I think that in itself is a problem, that we hear him catching up.

However, there may be other benefits in trying to wait it out - namely, watching each other and the surroundings. At least we will get a view.

Is the whistling full of sharps and flats, or is it normal, musical whistling?

I ask, because of human echolocation. There are two main schools of it, Whistlers and Clickers. Most of the Clickers have been vision impaired from birth, while most Whistlers lost their sight later in life. Whistlers have a lower "resolution", and aren't as good at speed. Clickers, generally speaking, are capable of moving much faster without 'motion blur'. It's hard to talk about this sort of thing without resorting to Visual metaphors because of how used to sight we all are.

If the whistling figure is using echolocation and a good spacial memory, we've got some big problems. The good news is he won't be Super Fast.

Now, whether or not Medea would know any of this stuff, that's up to the QM. But...

Also, I'm half awake, so I might not have a everything one-hundred percent... I am speaking from personal experience though. I was blind for the better part of a year and I picked up the basics of the Whistler style.

Can you believe I proof-read my work before I post it? lol

You are surrounded on every side by forest. You also pretty deep in the woods, and since you guys followed the markings to try and get back, you are now effectively lost and don't even know what direction you are going in. The road isn't any where near you, but that's not to say you wouldn't be able to find it.

Landmarks aren't exactly a luxury you guys have, considering it is pitch black in the middle of a part of the woods you never were in before.

There aren't any clouds, so navigation is possibly... if it weren't for the trees blocking your view of the sky.

Normal musical whistling.

Though I must admit, this was quite interesting to read. I do love to learn. :3

Does Nevill's idea of moving towards the road work?

If there is a road passing through the forest not too far away from us, it should. However, if the only road nearby is the road that leads to the campsite, and if that road stops there, then we can't really determine the direction to the road.

You guys both have a map and a compass, so it does technically work. Only problem is you guys are really deep in the forest and due to following the markings on the tree, you aren't even sure where you are.

How unsure of where we are are we?

What's the map, anyway? For example, if it's like the above, then regardless of where we are in the forest, we would eventually cross the road if we went west - even if we aren't sure where it is. I mean, we were walking with a group for what, an hour or two on a rough terrain? Can't be more than 7-8 kilometers, which would give us a solid idea of the area we are in as long as there aren't space-time shenanigans going on.

Man, this sounds like my writing on the quest so much that it is almost spooky.

You have not used the map or the compass since your trek back to camp, so you don't know your precise location or what direction you are currently going.

All I'll say in regards to the map is that the House was a good 3 miles to the North to the campsite. That's all the help I'm going to give you guys. So use that information to decide on your decision. Just remember one thing: clock is ticking.

Wait a second. We have phones. If they still have connection, they certainly know where we are.

So, lets try to get a map of the area. If that doesn't work, does our low-tech map have coordinates? If so, try to get our coordinates from our phone.

Oh, and one thing:

[X] Stop using your phones for frivolous things like using a flashlight app when you have flashlights. Conserve power as much as possible.

Closing the vote! "Stay quiet and listen to the whistling" wins with five votes, with the added "Try whistling along once you've heard enough of the tune" with two votes.

Now then, I'm going to be rolling some dice. For reasons.

edit: Hmm, interesting results.
TheLordofAwesome threw 4 100-faced dice. Reason: le secret~! ;D Total: 221
11 11 70 70 65 65 75 75

That 11 doesn't bode well....

Maybe it's for which characters got something out of the listening? Four rolls right?

If we're the first roll...lmao

Edit: Wait, shit. Four characters beside us. So five. This is not a roll for that then lol

Chapter 10: Home amongst the Trees
[X] Stay quiet and listen to the whistling.
-[X] Try whistling along once you've heard enough of the tune.
Against what was probably your better judgement, you decided that you'd keep quiet and listen to the whistling in the forest. Your friends keep trying to shine their flashlights on whatever is out there making that noise, Lucas asking a few more times if everybody was hearing that whistling. Of course no one gave him an answer to his question, either too focused on trying to spot whatever was making the whistling, too freaked out to properly talk, or, in your case, trying to focus on the musical melody being whistled out from the darkness.

The whistling gradually got louder and louder, until it sounded like it was right next to you. It was so loud, inhumanly loud. It was like a jet turbine compared to how you knew a human's whistling should sound. And yet it was so playful and cheerful... The more you listened to it, studied the melody, the more you felt at peace; your fear and unease you had originally felt when the whistling started slowly melted away. The feeling of familiarity that once caused you to pale in fear now caused you to undergo a sensation of nostalgia, but the source of that nostalgia still eluded you.

After a bit more listening you decided that you wanted to try whistling the melody. You test the waters by whistling the first three notes of the melody. The moment the notes left your lips the whistling in the forest came to a dead stop, your friends pointed their flashlights at you, their faces filled with absolute dread. You don't let this stop you and you whistle the next three notes of the tune. After another brief moment of silence the whistling from the dark forest started up again, this time away from the group, back to where it had originally started. You couldn't fight it anymore, you joined in with the whistling. Soon you and whoever was in the woods were whistling in tandem, filling the night air with the sweet sound of music.

The group of people next to you say something, but you don't know what they said nor do you care. The only thing you cared about was the melody you and your newfound friend in the darkened forest were whistling. Oh how your whistling duet filled your heart with joy! You vehemently resist the urge to grin or giggle in jubilation, all for this divinely inspired art you were crafting with your own lips!

Bravely you took a step forward towards the source of your whistling partner, and your vision goes white. In a moment your vision returns to you and you find yourself in the most wondrous of sights!

No longer was the forest darken by the night, but rather illuminated by the orange glow of twilight! The leaves of the trees above had gone from green to the most lovely shade of scarlet, some of which had fallen from their branches and onto the forest floor, creating a road of crimson as the trees parted before you. And at the very end of the red road of leaves stood a figure clad in white.
He brings the whirling deep in your heart
You need to meet them.
Then sings as twirling demons of dark
You began walking, taking slow and steady steps as you move towards the figure, continuing your whistling. A breeze flows past you as you walk, blowing through your hair. When the breeze hit you, you could swear you could hear music in the air. But not like the music of the whistling, but actual music! Music as if there was some unseen band playing, and the music was the tune you had been whistling and listening too, made fully realized! With each step you took the music got louder, soon drowning out the sound of your whistling.
To take you down beneath the ridge
The chill of the night that was biting at your flesh was also gone, replaced by warmth. The kind of warmth one might get by being wrapped in a thick blanket, sitting by a fire on a cold winter's day. A warmth that filled your heart with joy and love as you closed the distance. Getting closer. Closer. Closer. Closer...
To where is found his silent bridge
Various smells were carried on the breeze. The smells of pancakes and French toast, of cakes and pies, of fruits, of freshly baked bread... They were absolutely everywhere! Each smell interchanging and mixing into one another, each one intoxicating you with every breath you took.
Still is the water green and thick
The sights! The sounds! They're everywhere and all around! You've never felt this good before! And only now do you truly understand why the song seemed so familiar: it reminded you of home. You knew you have never heard this song before, but listening to it here and now did you realize that you've never felt more at home, more at peace. You simply cannot get enough! You want it, oh, you want it! Oh, you want it for your own! This forest will be your home! It is your home...
He'll drag you under with his stick
You finally got close enough to the figure you could make out their appearance. The figure couldn't be more than sixteen or twenty years old, with androgynous looks that prevented you from telling if this person was male or female, their face retains vaguely childlike features, but at the same time beautiful and elegant despite whatever gender they might be. They had long, beautiful hair that shimmers with an off-white color, and their skin was pale, lustrous and soft. The figure wore a plain white dress or robe that was immaculately clean but otherwise unremarkable, which further obscures their gender by hiding their physique, and making it difficult to discern if they is even actually human.
See flaxen gold floats there through the mist
They were the most beautiful thing you've ever set your eyes on.
He killed someone's daughter with his wick
The figure perched their lips, silently whistling the song on the breeze and held out their arms, beckoning you to come closer, calling you to their embrace. Your heart leap with joy at the sight! You reach your hand out towards them, wanting to touch this stranger who was so closer, and yet so far a-

Suddenly something collides into you from behind, sending you crashing into the hard ground below you. Dazed, you pushed against the added weight on your back to look up, frantically looking around your surrounding. The beautiful forest you were once in was now gone, replaced once more by the cold and the dark of the forest you and your friends were lost in. The joy and the love that had been filling your heart left you, leaving you feeling cold and empty.

"No..."

"Medea, snap out of it!" Your body goes still and your twist your head around to see who was on top of you. It was Danielle who was latched onto you, her eyes filled with worry as she looked at you, tears welling at the edges.

"Danielle...?"

Without a word the dark haired girl flipped you around effortlessly and pulled you into a tight hug. You sat there motionless as you starred off into the distance, where the rest of your friends looked on in worry, as you wonder what just happened.

"Don't scare us like that, Medea!" Danielle cries, her voice cracking a little.

That snaps you back to reality, and you wrap your arms around your now sobbing friend, looking at her with puzzlement.

"Danielle, what... happened?"

Danielle breaks the hug, rubbing her wet eyes as she focuses on you.

"You started whistling with whatever is out here, and then you started walking into the woods!" She clears her throat a bit, trying to keep her voice from cracking. "You wouldn't respond when we tried talking to you. It was like you were in a trance! I-I got so scared for you, I didn't know what to do! I'm sorry! I tackled you to keep you from going any further!"

She starts to break down again and you wrap your arms around her to comfort her.

"H-Hey, it... it's alright. I'm fine. I'm okay." That wasn't true. In fact, you were pretty scared. Were you really in a trance? Was... was what you saw just an illusion? It felt so... real.

Above you you hear the loud and sudden creaking of tree branches, as if a sudden weight was added to them. Both your body and Danielle's stiffen at the noise, holding each other close in wide eye panic. Slowly the sound of deep, animalistic labored breathing creeps into your hearing range from above. You began to tilt your head up slowly, to see what was now above you.

Your eyes widened and your heart plummeted into your chest. Above you, looking down at you was a pair of yellow eyes, shining in the dark like a cat's eyes. You could not see what the eyes belonged to as whatever it was dark enough to blend into the darkness but you could tell whatever it was large, larger than any human.

"Oh God. Run."

"What?" Danielle whispers, looking at you with fear.

"RUN!" You yelled, quickly standing to your feet, pulling Danielle up along with you.

You run, run for your life as you pull Danielle along with you towards Eli, Lucas, and Sierra. Eli steps forward to say something, but a loud landing sound from behind you causes him, Lucas, and Sierra to look on in absolute horror.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!" You hear Danielle scream from behind you, but you don't look back to see what they are seeing.

"RUN! JESUS CHRIST, RUN!!" You yell at your friends. They don't need to be told twice, they turn tail and start booking it, with you and Danielle in hot pursuit.

From behind you hear a young woman's scream, but not one of fear but more like a battle cry than anything else. It was heavily distorted, like there was some sort of static over it. It sounded so unnatural, so alien. The scream turned into a screech, and the screech turned into a shriek, and then the shriek continued for a solid three seconds.

And then it stopped.

You tired not to focus on it, keeping your mind on where you and your friends are going, trying to put as much distance between yourself and whatever is behind you. You keep running after your friends, Danielle pulling herself free of your grasp and now running along side you.

The sound of breaking wood and falling trees filled the forest behind you, as various animal calls fill the night air great distances away. Heavy foot falls and breathing sounded through the darkness, getting closer and closer. Instinctively you turned your head to the right, and you the moment you do you go pale.

To the forest on your right was the pair of yellow eyes, still looking directly at you. The thing they belong to was massive, towering over you by a good four feet. And it was standing, fucking standing and running like a human. Occasionally it would fall over and start running on all fours like a bear for a few seconds, but it would eventually right itself and start running on two legs again. But it never broke eye contact with you. It looked into you, into your soul. It was clear it was just keeping pace with you just so it can look at you.

You couldn't fight it, you screamed. You screamed harder and louder than you have ever in your entire life.

And the thing laughed.

It starts out deep and slow, then suddenly bursts into a high, loud, very human-like maniacal cackle.

Then it takes off. it speeds up so fast that it was gone in a blink of an eye and was now in your path, cutting you and Danielle off from the still fleeing Eli, Lucas, and Sierra. You and Danielle skid to a full stop, staring in wide eyed terror at the creature in the darkness. It kept its body low to the ground, clearly getting ready to pounce, all while keeping its eye squarely on you.

You knew you were going to die, and the moment you had that realization did it lunge forward. Time seem to slow down. Your heart was beating rapidly as the creature seemed fly through the air towards you. And in a moment, you felt yourself being shoved away. You twist your body to see what had happened.

Danielle had shoved you out of the way and was now in the path of the creature. She quickly reached into her pocket, moving faster than you thought possible, and pulled out Sierra's pepper spray. She held out the self-defense weapon and pressed the button on the top, releasing a the contents with a hiss towards the creature... and striking its eyes.

The creature let out a horrific howl of surprise and pain as it sailed through the air, crashing into Danielle and then tumbling off into the woods, leaving Danielle collapsed onto the ground.

"Danielle!" You scream as you pushed yourself from the ground, rushing over to your friend's side.

"No, no, no... Please don't..." You press your finger to her neck, hoping to find a pulse. After a few tense moments, you felt it. You were relieved that she wasn't dead, but looking at her you knew she was hurt. She was unconscious and blood was streaming from her head, and she may have a concussion and possibly a few broken bones, but you couldn't be sure. It isn't safe out here, not for her and not for you. Not while that thing is still out here.

You looked up to where the creature had disappeared. It was screaming in anger and pain, just screaming a blood curdling scream. While you couldn't make out its form you could tell that it was flailing about, trying to strike at anything living that might be close to it.At the moment the pepper spray has temporarily left it blinded, but once the effects have dulled it will be coming after you again or maybe it might go after Danielle, looking for vengeance for having hurt it.

[ ] Try to get Danielle to regain consciousness.

[ ] Carry Danielle to safety.

[ ] Leave Danielle and get yourself to safety.

[ ] Attack the creature while it is vulnerable.

Attack! Onward my brave soldiers! To battle!

Do not go gently into that dark night! But go with rage, rage against The Dark!

Yeah took liberties with the poem.

[X] Attack the creature while it is vulnerable. Make sure to limit noise made and lead it away from the group.

Funny given that poem is about the struggle against death. :p

Btw @TheLordofAwesome if you can please provide us with some ridiculous quip if the fight goes through. Preferably as our guts spill out and we realise that we forgot to flush when we were leaving home xD

Gotta sneak in some comedy ey.
