This isn't a trap guys...probably, at least. It's a puzzle...and PLOT, at that. If this parallels the other house, then this is the room where the supernatural door was...and these are presumably the key to triggering something, either here or in the original room.

The other altars had indentations...we thought they were for candles, but maybe they were for skulls.

For now...

Considering the context of this, I absolutely stand by my choice. Still, we may very well have to poke the obelisk, though let's not poke it so hard we flood the world with demons.
Try not to focus too hard on the context of the videos and/or images I post, for their context may or may not actually line up with what might or might not happen with certain choices. Maybe. I don't know. My mind is a maze to even myself and I am a consummate liar.

Alright, closing the vote a little later today. Give you all time to vote and/or think on your votes.

Got to say, you guys play it safe too often! How am I suppose to horribly murder you all if you all play it safe?! That's just inconsiderate is what that is.

"Blaming a woman for your mistake isn't very gentlemanly of you, Lucas." Sierra teases. She loses her smile and focuses back onto you. "And about you and your, uh, magic. The fact you can end up hurting yourself because of it troubles me. So promise me that you'll only use it when necessary?"

She looks at you unexpectedly, and Lucas also turns his gaze onto you. You never got the chance to, but Lucas did wanted you to promise not to use it ever again. Honestly, you understand where both of them are coming from. Of course it's not like you wanted to hurt yourself. Still, this power of your's can be useful. At the very least you owe them this much and you don't want to fight with Sierra over it.

"Fine." You say. "I promise."
We just recently promised to only use magic when necessary. Creating light is hardly necessary. Yes, we know that casting spells that Medea already knows is pretty safe, but Lucas and Sierra don't. At least we should talk to them first.

[X] Talk to Lucas and Sierra and tell them that you are pretty sure that your magic is safe to use once you have figured out a spell and you would really like to create some more light so you can study the obelisk properly. Try your best to persuade them.
-[X] If they are okay with it, cast Light.

Well, I assume we would say that we're using magic before we make the light. I feel this whole situation counts as an emergency, especially with the maybe-eldritch obelisk.

Miss one update, and it starts a cascade reaction of 'I'll get to it later'. Oh well, at least I am back at the present.
(will probably post the edits to the latest update some time tomorrow)

Glad we passed the healing roll, though with the kind of bonuses stacked on top of each other it was hard not to. I'd chalk it up to a desire to do something about the horrible randomness of magical system that discourages experimentation. Though now we have the problem of a promise... I guess it's to balance out the wanton use of of magic now that we can heal ourselves at will for as long as we have a strip of clothing left.

I am probably too late to vote, but it's a matter of principle to get me back on track and participating.

Give a hint as to what could/should be done, or to what the successful result may be.

Right now people see it as 'do something out of curiosity, but know that you can/will be horribly murdered if things go wrong, and you have no idea what it means for them to go right'. Obviously, this is not very tempting.

We could probably try a 'puzzle mode' where we act out various suggestions with you responding in short updates/descriptions. Once we trigger something, be it a trap or a solution, then it's time for a bigger update.

I mean, the current vote format encourages dealing with whatever problem we are faced with in a single vote (due to length of updates and other factors), and it is really hard to propose something other than 'move along' out of the blue.

I knew I was forgetting something.

I grew bored trying to manage a dozen of quotes and just decided to do one. Hopefully it will simplify things.
It seems like you only have one option, and that was to go down these steps. You couldn't go back, you've done enough backtracking in this goddamn place. You have to keep moving forward if you ever want to get out of here, and not tuck tail and run back to places you've been the moment things get scary. Though things were pretty scary right now. Despite how you've had "normal" discussions with Lucas and Sierra, deep down you were terrified. And right now this feeling of being watched did not comfort you, especially as you prepared yourself to traverse down a flight of dark stairs.

You move towards a torch on the stone wall, take hold of it and pry it off the wall. You look to Lucas and then to Sierra, analysing their faces. They look scared but hold a certain confidence in their eyes as they look at you. You nod to them and turn towards the stairs again.

"Deep breaths, Medea."

You breathe in...

"You got this, girl."

...You breathe out and take your first tentative step forward towards the unknown. You take slow careful steps down the old and cracked stone steps, Lucas and Sierra following your lead. As you walked down the winding stairway you couldn't help but feel dread as the sensation of being watched intensified with every step you took towards the darkness of the depths below, the sounds of your and your friends' footsteps being the only thing breaking the otherwise deathly silence of the stairway which only served to unnerve you more. Eventually you reached the bottom of the stairs and stepped out into the room before you.

The moment your feet made contact with the ground you felt the feeling of being watched dissipate, much to your relief. You look back to your companions and see that they too were relieved that the feeling was gone. You didn't have to say anything, one look of their faces told you everything you needed to know. You turn back towards the rest of the room and then frown at what you saw.

You were in what appeared to be a massive room, with no light source besides the torch in your hand thus plunging the whole room in an oppressive darkness. You looked to your left and to your right but you could see no walls, the darkness of the room seemingly endless as it stretched further than the light of your torch could reach. You could barely see a couple of pillars at the edge of the light, standing maybe a good sixteen feet tall as they held up the stone ceiling of the chamber.

Cautiously you move forward deeper into the darkness, passing through the two support pillars in short order. As you venture further into the abyssal darkness you spot more support pillars coming into view by the light of your torch, and another set beyond them. And yet, no matter how far you walk there seems to be no end to this room. It must be truly massive if you had not reached the end of it yet. As you walked you couldn't help but feel a little unnerved that the only sounds you heard within the room were the sound of your and your friends' footsteps echoing through the vast and empty chamber.

Minutes passed, and still no sight of the end of the room, but eventually you saw something standing high appearing at the edge of the light. As you approached, the light revealed to you an obelisk.

You stopped dead in your tracks after you made out what it was. The obelisk looked much like the one you encountered before but it was different. At the base of the obelisk there appeared to be stone hands reaching up and touching the pillar, while a statue of a creature curled itself around the length of the obelisk, embracing the erect stone pillar with long, gangly arms. Of course, you weren't sure what the hell the creature was even supposed to be. The closest analogy your mind could come up to describe it was some sort of a hybrid, with a long serpentine or an eel-like body with the head of some marine reptile and the elongated, misshapen, hairless arms of some primate. But even as you describe its likeness to yourself your own mind is rejecting that description.

Tearing your eyes away from the obelisk you notice something behind it, just outside the light's reach. Moving forward, the fire's light illuminates the area behind the obelisk, bringing a set of four altars into view. Curious you move forward towards the altars.

As you approach, more of the details become clearer to you and you notice something interesting about these altars...

"Are these... the same altars from that basement?" Sierra speaks up, her voice echoing through the quite empty chamber disturbingly. "Why are they down here?"

"I don't know." You say as you eye up the eagle altar from a distance. It was certainly odd that these would be here. "Though I'm not sure these are the same ones. I mean, they might be duplicates."

If they were duplicates, they were completely exact. Right down to the very last detail they were identical to the altars you all found in the basement of the abandoned house.

"Hey, what are those sitting on them?" Lucas said pointing to the tops of the altars.

You look to where he was pointing and you see that there were, in fact, things sitting on the altars. You step closer to get a better look and once you are close enough you see that sitting on the altars are skulls. Or rather, masks made from skulls. The human altar has a mask made from a human skull, the lion altar has a mask that was made from some sort of canine's skull, the bull's was made from the skull of a deer or an elk, and the eagle was made from some very large bird's skull.

What were these for? You assumed they must have been used for some ritual but you couldn't hazard a guess as to what. And just why were they here? The basement altars didn't have these skull masks sitting on them, so why are these here but not there?

"This is freaking me out a bit." Sierra admitted, shuffling towards you a bit. "Can we go back?"

"No," You said. "I've done enough backtracking through this godforsaken place. We'll have to keep going."

Silence fell after that point. It was so quiet that it actually kind of scared you just standing here, with the all consuming darkness being held at bay by the flickering fire of the torch in your hand.

You need to keep going forward. No matter what, you can't just keep going back when things get scary. But as you think on what to do next, you can't help but feel a sense of morbid curiosity creeping over you as you stood there between the obelisk and the altars. Curiosity that begged to know.

Chapter 41: Walls of Meat
(Author Note: I apologize for how long this took to get out. Lately I've been... dealing with stuff and just haven't had the urge to really write. I apologize to everyone and promise that it won't happen again. I'm also sorry if this one seems a little rushed, I just didn't feel like it was right to make you all wait for longer than was needed.)

You consider your options carefully, glancing around the dark chamber. Your eyes settle on the stone obelisk and you couldn't help but feel curious about the strange object. Your instincts told you to leave, your gut told you to leave, but nevertheless, despite everything screaming at you to leave it be and keep going, you remain a living human being and suffer under the cacophony of questions that rattle around in your brain.

"Medea?" Sierra mutters. "You okay?"

"Yeah," You nod as you continue to look at the pillar. "Give me a moment."

"You're, uh, looking at that thing pretty intensely, Medea..." Lucas remarks, as she shuffles uncomfortably to your side. "I think we should go..."

"Give me. A moment." You say firmly as you move closer to the obelisk. Looking at the pillar you realize that the flame of your torch just isn't cutting it in properly illuminating it. But you knew what could help. "Hey guys?"

"What's up?" Sierra asks.

You turn to them, looking to Sierra and then to Lucas. You take a deep breathe...

"I'm going to use magic." You said. Slowly looks of unease form on their faces as they look to each other then back to you.

"Um, why?" Sierra asks, raising an eyebrow. "You promised, like, a few minutes ago that you'd only use it when it was necessary."

"Yeah, I know. But-"

"And I'm pretty damn sure this-" Sierra gestures to the obelisk that has captivated your interest. "-doesn't qualify as necessary."

"Hear me out," You say, raising your free hand to stop her. "What I was going to say was that I'm pretty sure that I can use spells that I've done before safely, and well..." You look to Lucas. "Remember the first spell you saw me do?"

"Yeah?" He utters. He's quiet for a moment, but then you see realization dawn on him. "Oh, I get it."

"What? What are you two talking about?" Sierra asks, slightly confused.

"The, uh, first spell that I saw Medea cast was a light spell." Lucas explained as he looked over your shoulder towards the obelisk. "I'm guessing that she intends to use it to light up the thing so she could get a better look at it."

"And it would be better than this torch for lighting our way." You chimed in.

"I see..." Sierra muttered in thought as she cupped her chin. Her questioning gazes shifts over to you, looking you over as she quietly mulls over this information. After a moment she speaks. "And you think you could do this 'light' spell again? Without hurting yourself in the process?"

"I think so," You nod in affirmation. "I remember how I did it before and how I felt when I did it. I think I should be able to replicate the process to cast the spell again. To be honest I've just been flying by the seat of my pants when it comes to this magic stuff and I've screwed up a few times already, but when I get it right I feel like I could do it again. if that makes sense."

"That... doesn't exactly inspire confidence." Sierra says. You looked to the ground, feeling a little crestfallen. "Lucas, your thoughts?"

"If Medea thinks she can do it again then I don't see a problem." He shrugs. "I mean, I've seen her do this one before so maybe she'll pull it off just fine...?"

"'Maybe she'll pull it off'?" Sierra raises and eyebrow, folding her arms.

"I don't know. I don't know how this shit works." He replies, sounding more than a little frustrated. "If she thinks she can do it then I say fine. She's the party wizard here."

Sierra hums to herself in thought, her gaze shifting from Lucas to you. She sighs and raises her hands. "Fine." She says. "But if you get hurt I'm going to kick your ass for being an idiot, Medea."

"Noted." You say, giving her a smile. "And thanks for trusting me."

Sierra says nothing, instead shooting you a look that basically told you to "Get on with it." You nod your head and hold out your hand, closing your eyes and focusing. You focus on what you want to achieve, letting the energy inside flow through you as take care not to put too much or too little into the spell. Trying to get the energy just right, trying to be as exact as possible with how much you used before. Soon you open your eyes and in your hand is the orb of light, illuminating the room. You look to Sierra and Lucas expectantly but see they are looking around the room in wide eyed terror. You raised an eyebrow in confusion but you followed their gazes.

The moment you do you feel the blood drain from your face and your eyes go wide.

There in the distance, that was once just out of the torch's field of light but now illuminated by the much more powerful orb of light was something growing the surface of the walls and floors of the room. It looked... organic; alive. It reminded you of exposed muscle with sinews grafting it to the walls. This organic tissue pulsated and quivered, almost like it was breathing. It stretched out as far as you could seeing, to a door on a distant wall.

You looked back towards the direction you were all going and see a hole in a wall, just in the distance. It appeared like something had broke through the wall as the ground in front of the hole was littered in broken stone. The meat-like moss stretched out towards the hole, going through it and stretching into the darkness beyond.

"Medea..." You hear Sierra whisper quietly. "Do what you wanted to do and let's get the fuck out of here."

You nod frantically and quickly turn back to the obelisk, focusing on it and trying to push out the thought of that stuff growing on the walls.

Immediately you note that the surface of the obelisk is covered with an array of bas-reliefs which depict various monstrosities that spread across the obsidian surface of the pillar.Something you couldn't have made out until you had this much brighter light source. Design-wise they appear to be drawn similarly to the sea monsters you'd see on old maps from centuries prior, albeit somehow drawn more horrifically. As if someone took those old depictions of sea monsters and ran them through the unfiltered nightmares of some mad artist.

The various creatures that covered the obelisk's surface were depicted destroying ships, consuming humans, or battling one another. Near the top of the obelisk were a humanoid-like set of carvings, just below the arms of the statue that clung to the obelisk. Strangely, they looked nothing like the human carvings that were being devoured by the monster carvings, being drawn badly out of proportion with elongated limbs, bulbous heads, and claw-like hands and feet, and were drawn in such a way that it appeared they were paying homage to the statue attached to the obelisk.

Still curious you circle around the pillar, studying each of the markings on the object's surface. You stop when you spy something quite peculiar. You see a bare spot of the pillar, free of any carvings of seafaring beasts and baring letters. What you were seeing was a word, but it was obscured by decaying barnacles and thick effluvial grime.

AB████S█████U█████T

Looking at it, you guessed that you could probably clear it off to get a better look at the word. You reach out towards the pillar only for a hand to grab your shoulder a pull you back. You let out a startled squeak as you were whirled around, your eyes making contact with Sierra's angry glare.

"No." She said in a scolding tone.

"What?"

"You are not touching that thing." She said as she folding her arms under her chest.

"I wasn't going to touch it!" You protest. "I was going going to clear off the gunk on it to see this word."

"That sounds exactly like touching it." Sierra sighs as she pinches the bridge of her nose.

"Whatever..." You roll your eyes.

"Don't 'whatever' me, Medea." Sierra said coldly, her eyes locking back onto your's.

"Sorry, mom." You reply sardonically with another roll of the eyes.

"I'm not..." She begins to say before trailing off. She sighs once more before rubbing her eyes. "Look, I'm just trying to look out for you, alright? This is all... I don't know, but it isn't normal. That shit growing on the fucking walls isn't normal."

"Understatement of the goddamn year..." Lucas comments from the side. Sierra turns to glare at him, silently telling him to keep quiet. He seems to get the message as he raises his hands and gives an apologetic look.

"Look, I just want us to get out of here..." She reasoned. "I'm sure you think this is all interesting to look at but we are not in a good place, Medea. Can we please just leave?"

You looked at her, then looked to Lucas who was looking around nervously. She had a point, this isn't right, but at the same time you had to know. But maybe it would be best to just leave as quickly as possible. You think over your choices for a moment, briefly musing how did you become the leader in all this, before deciding...

Oh great, meat walls. I'm all for following Sierra's wise words of advice, but I'm not sure if going forward or back will be the best way out, or even if interacting with the obelisk is important. It looks like in the place we were going there's a broken hole in the wall, as well as another door far away that we didn't see. There's also the option of just going back the way we came, though then there's the chance of running into whatever was back there. I have no idea what could happen if we mess with the obelisk of the cthulhu things, but that marking looks a little interesting. What do you guys think?

Added a second vote, just so that if everything goes fine, we get an update with more than 100 words. Hey, one can hope, right?
