I'm coming up empty, but to share my thoughts on the reference: I think these statues are likely broken/defeated versions of similar statues from a game or book. Probably the former, seeing as they seem like they might be representative of character classes.

That quote appears to have come up in Eternal Darkness and Fallout 4, but that doesn't mean it's actually a reference to one of those...just the main games that google turns up when I search the line.

I have never played, and only heard, of the Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem game. It features exactly one quote from Edgar Allan Poe, but is not otherwise connected to it in any way. The game is famous, among other things, for its use of Sanity Effects. The quote appearing on the screen is one of them.

The items are effigies from that game:
The Sapphire Effigy is a wizard carved from blue corundum. He is clawing at his head in a frenetic frenzy.
The Emerald Effigy is a scholar carved from green gemstone. She is kneeling with her head down in defeat.
The Ruby Effigy is a warrior carved from red corundum. He is kneeling in defeat.
They need to match certain bas-reliefs, and if you match them wrong, lead to the appearance of a Horror.

The old man is quite advanced for a geezer. We should ask him for a Nintendo console.

Challenge Completed
Aaaand Nevill secures the reference part of the challenge!

Congratulations, everyone! The challenge is completed!

Item or Hope Corgi? That's...a difficult choice. Tempted to go for the item, as the Corgi Ending is Non-Canon, but...Hope Corgi...

We don't need the Hope Corgi to know that All Will Be Well.

Let's pick up the item.

Edit: It is a shame that each person who answered rhe question doesn't individually pick an option. Four questions, Four people answered, Five prizes lf varying use...

Hannz and Nevill took care of the paintings (what and who)
Simulium Novitius (Me) figured out WHY on the books.
Higure hit close enough on the statues to score a hint which allowed Nevill to figure out the statues.

So if @TheLordofAwesome was going to do it that way it might even look like this:

Nevill picks first for answering 1 question and half of two questions.
Hannz picks second for answering half of two questions which allowed Nevill to finish the answer.
Simulium Novitius picks third for answering one question.
Higure picks 4th for answering 0 questions but scoring the hint which allowed Nevill to figure out his question and generally helping with all the questions with leg work.

But nope, we gotta figure out what we want.

@TheLordofAwesome

Can anyone vote on or just those who worked on the questions?

[X] Find an item in the basement that will help you survive.

Perhaps this item was left for us by a passing Hope Corgi.

"Oh, before I forget. Just do an old man one favor," He looks over his shoulder, looking over each of you with a dead serious look. "Don't go in my basement. Everywhere else in the house is fine, but the basement is forbidden. Do you understand?"

You feel a cold sweat break out all over you, but you and your friends all nod to his request.
How very nice of you to place the one item that'd help us survive in the one place we are told not to go under the penalty of death. :p

Just vote on the damn thing. I certainly won't override people's choice if they want something different, and I doubt others would either.

Hmm...well, we COULD ask a question along the lines of "what's hunting us" or "what's the stramge door that doesn't exist in photos" or even "how can we all escape alive," but those would kinda mess up the experience. Sticking with the item, myself.

I'd go for this:

[ ] Find an item in the basement that will help you survive.

If we weren't warned to not enter the basement lest spoopy things happen.

[X] Reveal which choices will lead to death in one future update.

I find that this is far more risk-free, since knowing which will lead to the Death of say, our friends or the monster chasing us is really useful even though it's a one time thing.

If we weren't warned to not enter the basement lest spoopy things happen.
Then again, we got that warning from a man that I believe is either trying to kill us, or will be in a short while. In these kinds of settings, the basement holds secrets that are best left undisturbed most of the time (of the 'you've seen me, now you die' variety), but also hold the key to escaping the situation/crisis. Ignoring these places leads to better/safer results short-term, and then to certain death.

So I think we'll be visiting the basement anyway when we are pressed enough to ignore the warning.

The choices are tricky. 'Not leading to death' is not much to go on. I am pretty sure going to the basement won't lead to death, but I am just as sure that doing so at this juncture is a bad, bad idea that will lead to someone getting injured or killed shortly thereafter. It's good to have certainty, but it's a bit less certainty than I would have liked.

Edit: it occured to me that I may have misunderstood the concern. I don't think the choice makes us go to the basement, it just says that if/when we do, we'll find an item there.

The only issue I have with this is the wording.

It's you. Not your group.

There goes our chance for a perfect no death run....(Sigh.)

No. It's a bonus, not a penalty. We have, at worst, gained and nothing towards a clean run.

Besides, most items that can help one person can help the group.

[X] Find an item in the basement that will help you survive.

Of course I missed out on the actual solving of the puzzle, but I'll still put in my two cents worth. Of all the options, this is the only one I see having potential long term benefits. Everything else is a sort of one and done type of deal, but an item that Medea can use could potentially be continually useful, depending on what it is of course.

Chapter 15: Temptation
[X] Resist
-[X] Fear not.
It's too much. The pressure on your mind, the pleasure that was making you weak at the knees; it was far too much. As the pressures build up within you and you force yourself not to cry out, your heartbeat raced, sweat poured out from all over your body, and your labored breaths came out louder and quicker with every passing second. Maybe... Maybe you should just let it happen? Allow yourself to be overtaken by the arousal you were feeling and submit yourself to-
Fear not.
"No!" You slam your fist into the wall, your eye twitches from the pain.
Fear not; for I am with thee.
You can't let yourself succumb to weakness like this. No matter how good it might feel, you know that the source of it bears nothing but ill will towards you. You have to fight its control over you. You straighten yourself up, forcing your legs to cooperate with you as you grip the window.
Be not dismayed.
You can feel the pressure of pleasure pound on your mind, far stronger than it once was. Trying to get you to submit to it as the whistling became louder in your ears.
I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee.
But something else came over you. Nothing like the pleasure... No, it was more pure and light. Like a reassuring hand on your shoulder, giving you the strength you needed to carry on. A feeling of love and hope.
All will be well.
With your new found strength you push down on the window, slamming it shut and silencing the whistling.

With the pressure gone from your mind your legs buckle beneath you and you collapse to the floor, flopping onto your back and staring up at the ceiling. You just lay there breathing heavily, shuddering slightly as you found yourself basking in the afterglow of the experience, all while trying to ignore the fact that your clothes were practically glued to your body by all the sweat. You laid there for maybe a minute or two, trying not to fall asleep right then and there.

Figuring it wouldn't do you any good to fall asleep here you push yourself up despite the protest the muscles in your body were sending you. Slowly you trudge out of the bedroom, pushing pass the ajar the door and closing it behind you. As you step back into the hall you see Sierra exit the bathroom, boots in her left hand, flannel shirt slung over her shoulder, and her hair still damp. Immediately she takes one look at you and raises an eyebrow.

"What happened to you?" She asks as she eyes your haggard form.

You mumble to yourself, debating internally on how to explain what just happened. But words fail you right now. You just look at her with a sheepish smile and shrug. Sierra blinks at you a few times before crossing the distance between you in what seems like an instant. Now she stands before you and she places her hand on your forehead.

"Sierra?"

"Hmm, you don't feel warm. So you're probably not sick." She removes her hand from your head.

"I-I'm fine, alright?"

Sierra looks at you, humming in thought.

"Okay," She nods. "But you know you can talk to me if something is wrong, right?"

You nod your head and Sierra smiles, satisfied.

"Cool," She points to the door behind you. "That a bedroom in there?"

You nod.

"Cool, cool." Sierra brushes past you and opens the door, stepping into the room. "I'm heading to bed now. Good night, Medea."

"Good night, Sierra." You say as you step away from the door. Sierra nods and slowly shuts the door.

You let out a sigh. Now you were alone once again.

Very interesting invis text TheLordofAwesome looking forward to how it effects Medea

Oh well. What's the worst that could happen? Unless the water turns all black and murky, and we scream in horror, and Lucas barges in on us, and we smell of swamp for the rest of the day, and dream of strange waters, and then we were the mermaid... ah, wrong quest.

I wonder if there is any reason for the rooms to be so similar. Should we try interacting with the effi- statues? Then again, considering the consequences of their mishandling in Eternal Darkness, maybe not.
