I thought about it, and tried hard to google it (though in my case it was Planescape: Torment that clued me in - it features a character with the same problem dealing with it the same way, likely inspired by the myth), but never could find its descriptions in those myths about Perseus that I could get my virtual hands on. All of them featured a bag to keep Medusa's head in, not a veil.

But apparently, this was the depiction of the scene by Hesiod:

Curiously enough, the translation from Greek to Russian again mentions a bag instead of a veil. So... was there a veil?

I am glad that we found a confirmation, but this is going to bother me as I thought I knew my Greek mythology pretty damn well.

[X] Take the ring.

...crap, I could have sworn he used a veil for ease of use after he was finished with the bag.

Am I misremembering?

[X] Take the ring.

I was wracking my mind over possible intext clues but I'm glad people are spouting all this cool info. I feel like I could have recognized the ring but not anything else~

Good work!

....And a bright eyed Athene did geird and clothe her with a silvery raiment, and down from her head she spread with her hands a broiderred veil, a wonder to see; and she, Pallas Athene put upon her head lovely garlands, flowers of new-grown herbs. Also she put upon her head a crown of gold which the very famous limping god made himself......

Funny how he kept on sleeping with them.

There's no lack of veils in Greek Mythology. In fact, Medea, after whom our character is named, too wore one - the one she covered her face with so she didn't see her lover Jasor kill her brother Apsyrtus. It is also described to be 'gleaming like silver', or outright silver in some renditions of the myth. No mention of gold, though, and no real significance to that piece of clothing.

The Veil of Isis would be the most fitting here. She would be the Goddess of Mysteries, and the inscription upon her statue reads: "I am all that has been, that is, that shall be, and none among mortals has yet dared to raise my veil."

It is said that beneath thas veil are concealed all the mysteries and learning of the past. It would be a perfect artifact for a Mystic... except that all depictions I've seen portray the veil as black, and more as a robe than a headwear.

In the end, I am stumped. Can't find a fit anywhere. :(

So I took a step back and looked over my plot notes recently and, uh... somehow I went from a relatively simple monster horror story to an entire wiki's worth of info on the lore of the universe of this quest.

Sounds about right. Stories, they grow like a fungus if you don't keep your eye on em.
It's kinda concerning when while in the middle of work I began to ponder on how the supernatural would deal with zombies and then figured they'd just shove them in a Blighttown-style hole... then pondered what would happen if some of those zombies became sapient again... Then began pondering (CONTINUE AD NAUSEAM)

Without making it too easy:

"I stood there wondering, fearing, doubting."

Well, you got the symbolism of why I included them. So kudos to you!

But you still need to figure out the reference. ;D

I know I'm probably late to the party but.. I KNOW THIS YAY! The first thought I had when I read about the three statuettes was how it reminded me of a "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" reference. This just confirmed it! All hail Xel'Iotath!

For the people who do not know about this obscure and wondrous gem of a game, this triad symbolizes the Rock-Paper-Scissors like hierarchy between three Cosmic Horrors and Eldritch Abominations. In particular, Raw Power/Strenght overpowers the Mind/Cunning, which in turn wins over Magic/Spirit, which in turn is nevertheless able to trump Power.

I wonder to which extent this could be related to the story!

Okay, so I finally caught up with the latest entry! It was a blast to read, so thanks to @TheLordofAwesome for writing one of the most entertaining quests I have yet found on this forum. I especially enjoyed the characters, the awesome variety in choices offered to the players and the numerous but never obnoxious references. It was especially cool to discover so many nods to Eternal Darkness ever since the statuette riddle, I wish I had found this sooner to steer (or perhaps mislead) people through my meta-knowledge of ED :D

As for this last choice, as much as I find the Veil to be the coolest and most magically-related artifact, I cannot but bow to the wisdom of previous posters and also go for

[X] Take the ring.

On a side note, there seems to be more than one Umineko reader among the players of this quests, which also pleases me unordinately!

This makes me happy to hear. I'm glad you are enjoying it. :3
I noticed this, but was enjoying it way to much to say anything.
YOU COULD HAVE STOPPED THIS MADNESS.

Chapter 23: Gift
...take the ring. You reach over and carefully slip the ring of the sorceress' finger. Once it was in your possession you trace the tips of your fingers over the hexagram engraved on the ring. Now for the moment of truth, you took the ring and slip it onto your right ring finger.

"Thou chose..."

You look back to Orphiel.

"Wisely."

Orphiel "nods" to you. You breathe a sigh of relief and start to relax.

"So what now?" You ask.

And as if to answer your question there is another great slam against the metal door, tearing it from the wall and sending it flying towards you, and your eyes widen and you are frozen in terror as the door sails across the room. Orphiel, however, holds out an "arm" and the door collides with it, stopping dead in its tracks and bending slightly from the impact, a loud
POP resonating from the impact against the mist-being's arm. You stare stunned at the sight as the door slowly slides from Orphiel's arm and falls to the ground.

Orphiel lowers its "arm" and looks over to the where the door once was, looking upon the the twisting, corrupting black mass rolling into the room. Orphiel doesn't say anything, merely raising its "arm" towards you and the sigil appearing in its hand, and your vision goes white.

When your vision returns you find yourself not in the room with the sorceress statue but back on the platform where you started. Frantically you start looking around but there is no sight of Orphiel anywhere. The three islands that had once surrounded the platform were also no where to be found, only the empty void of space filling the gap where they once were.

"Orphiel?" You say, looking around still for your guardian. "Where are you?"

But there is no response.

You couldn't help but feel worried for the mysterious being you've only encounter in these dreams. Although you didn't know it too well, it did sent you away from danger when that... thing burst into the room at the tower. You do not doubt that Orphiel is a powerful being, but it seemed worried about the black mass back when you were picking out the artifact. Hopefully they are alright...

You turn your attention to the door on the platform, and on the altars in front of it were two items that floated just a few inches off them: one a large, leather-bound book that glowed with a sickly green aura and the other a one-handed sword with a golden guard and a red hilt, glowing with a fiery red aura. Immediately you figure out that these items must be the artifacts to the other two paths, but why were they here?

You would think more on this but are taken by surprise when the artifacts began to break down and turn into pure balls of light that glowed their respective colors. The orbs moved away from the altars, floating towards the door, and once they met with the lone metal door their light spread across the entirety of its surface, red and green light mixing in with one another as the lights spread out. And soon the lights faded, a with it the door was gone, leaving only an empty door frame that you can see led to a new location.

You mind told you this should be impossible. That is the door were missing then there should only be a door frame leading to the other side of the platform you were standing on. You, of course, push these thoughts out, reasoning that this was just dream logic. Nothing to worry about.

This was all a dream.

This was all a dream.

You repeated this mantra to yourself as you moved towards the door, cautiously stepping through the portal to the mysterious new location. Once you have passed the threshold of the door, it vanished behind you. You look over your shoulder briefly to see it disappear, but otherwise you don't react. You figured that would happen.

You sigh and look around to figure out just where you were. It was a large round chamber that vaguely resembled the interior of a cathedral, on the walls there were five stain glass windows and close to the far wall was an altar. Actually, looking at the stained glass windows you realize that on them are images of you and your friends, one for each of you! To your right were windows with Sierra and Lucas, on the left were Danielle and Eli, and behind the altar was you.

On Sierra's window you see Sierra looking at a knife in her hand, the knife she gave to you, with an expression of concern. Behind her was background of a dark forest, and hovering just above her head was a pair of glowing yellow eyes. The window with Lucas had Lucas sitting down with a bottle in his hand, while his other hand was pressed against his forehead as he looked down towards the ground with a forlorn expression. Behind him was a tree with four silhouettes of bodies hanging from the branches.

On Danielle's window you see the image of your friend lying on her side, sporting a pained expression while a dark, featureless figure looms over her and a dark, swirling vortex in the background behind the figure. With Eli's window you see the image of Eli lying on his back, holding up a ring and looking at it with a melancholic expression, all while four skeletal hands reach out towards him, with a blood red moon hanging in the background.

Then there was your window.

Your image had you dressed in the same manner as the sorceress statue from the tower, revealing robe and all, also posing in a similar manner to the statue, with a blank, emotionless expression on your face, and a rainbow ring behind you. The background behind you was a featureless blue, but from below you there were four hands reaching up towards you, while a pair of darker, shadow-like hand reach down from above.

From each of these windows a light shown from them. The light from your window was a that of a soft glow similar to that of moonlight. Sierra's window shined the brightest, like that of bright sunny day. Lucas' was the next brightest, shining into the room with light of a morning sun. Danielle and Eli's windows shined with the same amount of light, it wasn't nearly as bright as Lucas' window or Sierra's, more shining with the light of a late twilight.

After taking in your new environment you approach the altar in the room, eyes trained on the stained glass window bearing your likeness. As you approach you see a flash of light, and appearing behind the altar was Orphiel. ...But something was wrong. The lights that made up its "face" were faded, the rainbow ring behind it fluctuated in brightness, and its aura seem to be fading, making it difficult to keep up its humanoid shape.

Wordless you approach Orphiel and slip off the ring, placing it on the altar. Orphiel looks down at the ring, and with a wave of its hand, the ring breaks down and becomes an orb of soft aqua blue light. Orphiel looks back up to you and from all around you hear:

"The power of the mystic.
Inner strength.
A tool of wonder and ruin.
Do you wish to accept this gift?"

[ ] Accept the Gift.

[X] Accept the Gift.

That moment when the horror story you're reading turns out to be really weird Kingdom Hearts fanfiction :V

Kidding, can't wait to see how this changes things.

[X] Accept the Gift.

We've come this far. Besides, it would be a disservice to a certain purple haired mage to say no.

Pfft, who needs a mysterious artifact that might help survive Eldritch Horrors infesting this place? The real power is the one in your heart anyway!

...said no player ever.

[X] Accept the Gift.

Do we get a Mark/tattoo to go with it? Is it pretty?
