I wonder if there's a spell out there to turn water into wine. I mean, obviously not a church-sanctioned one, but you'd think a noble would invent that. Maybe Henry needs to start asking around, discretely.

Also, pooh on Karin's "punishment". A roller coaster ride followed by being dropped on the ground. Just as toothless as we always suspected.

I think I gotta agree with Wardes here, Shade. Henry is being a dumbass causing trouble for the sake of it. Honestly he would probably like 80% better off if he would just suck it up and drink some goddamn water.

Whatever, I'll keep watching.

I was ratger confused by it being unlawful to use his familiar to purchase things when
  1. there's a public business set up using that as a business model
  2. aren't familiars legally an extension of the mage?

When you are used to being an adult it is difficult to go back under someone else's thumb and simple accept what you are allowed. Henry subscribes to the philosophy that it is easier to apologies than ask permission. Generally not a good idea for children because they do not have the perspective or judgement to make responsible decisions. Shade/Henry, however, has his own goals and understands the consequences of his actions. There is no need to tip toe more than is necessary.

Look back on your childhood. Assuming you hand responsible parents, most punishments simply enforce more mature behavior. Limiting snacks, time away from toys, not visiting friends, a regulated schedule, strict studying are common punishments that mean little to someone who understands delayed gratification. It does not appear that Henry is being punished with pain, so really those punishments mean little to him in the long run. Henry does what he pleases because even if he gets caught, the punishment will be close enough to what he already planned on doing.

It's also worth considering the magical biology going on here: on one hand he's young enough for alcohol to actually severely impact his brain development. On the other hand, given he was fully sapient as a baby, he may not even be using that brain

Ah, 'tis unlawful by the strictures of Karin de la Valliere. What are the commandments of a country when compared to such?

He is way to much his mother. Doesn't she realize that?

Probably why she's riding so hard on him. Shes afraid that he''ll make the same mistakes she did, not realizing he is mentally a fully grown adult.

Really takes one to know one. :D

Still, I'm enjoying this form of Karin. While she still quite strict, she still possesses that hint of softness which Henry is great at dragging out.

Fine enough, but one thing I gained from being an adult is actually giving a fuck about how much effort other people have take in order to deal with my shit. Shade/Henry has shown a bit of that in his desire to get away from the servants to take care of himself, but at this point it feels like he is just pissing off Karin for the sake of pissing her off.

But my biggest peeve with him is that he is ticking off all my mental checkmarks of a Legit 100% Has A Serious Problem And Needs Personal Therapy Alcoholic.

(1) going to extreme lengths to retrieve Alcohol. (it might not be as bad as the coffee, but still...)
(2) treating friends and family who take away said Alcohol as problems to get around to retrieve it.
(3) Insisting that the Alcohol is necessary, for whatever reason
(4) Insisting that they can totally handle it, and that it should be normal for them to "out drink" others.
(5) counting the time between binges.

and more, so whenever I see him get all pissy that he has to drink *gasp* water because his family/friends said no. I feel less and less sympathy for his position.

Edit: but I could just be one of those self-righteous health nuts. so yeah, I am just being grumpy at someone not being me.

To be fair it's also a cultural thing, Shade has mentioned before and in other fics that he is an italian and depending on what part of it you are from drinking regularly can be considered quite normal.
Added to that is the fact that reincarnating basically forced him to suddenly go cold turkey from something that had become part of his normal routine and it becomes more understandable that now he's able to do it again he's taking full advantage.

... Yup, Shade is retarded as fuck and now he is going to get skinned alive.

She's his mom and a duchess. There may well be a law about this.

But on the basics. Anything his familiar does is legally the same as him doing it. And his mom said no and enforced it. Using his familiar is cheating like say using Skype when your mother forbid you to hang out with your friends.

Though honestly Karin is really kinda lenient. I mean of I tried half the shit he does openly as he did against instructions my hide ylwould be tanned an I'd not be able to sit down for a week. Hell considering relative competence I'd likely be kicked out.

This.

From what we've seen of his behavior if Henry was put in a room by himself with unlimited wine he would drink until the wine was gone or he passed out. Henry not only goes out of his way to drink excessively at public events as a means of flexing his independence, but also can't seem to control his alcohol intake in private settings even when he's screwing himself over by doing so.

Examples: when offered a glass of liquor by his parents, he proceeded to chug the glass and try to drain as much of the bottle as possible before they could physically stop him. When denied wine he proceeded to use the evenings he previously spent training to ride to the city and drink more. And of course most recently, getting blackout drunk while trying to manipulate Joseph.
