Chapter Two, Mordred Gives a Shovel Talk and Jinxes Herself.
Anya sat across from her daughter, knowing that what she was sending her daughter to do could have devastating repercussions to her, her family, and possibly, Kislev itself. But this was her best chance to get in on the ground floor before everyone else knew for better or for worse.
"Irina, the reason you are here instead of continuing your apprenticeship under your great aunt, is because Mordred Pendragon sent an offer to me, she is willing to allow a pair of kislevite witches to enter the Mage Academy of Drachenreich without needing to swear any oaths of loyalty to Drachenreich and would be able to return to Kislev with whatever knowledge they gleam.
Normally we would just send a pair of highly skilled witches but there is a group that has become known to me that I want you to join. A gathering of very talented magical apprentices from across numerous and highly important backgrounds is happening there and I want you, my daughter to go there and join it. It shouldn't be too hard, at first appearance it is just a few girls besotted with one of the twin princes of Drachenreich.
But there is very likely something more going on, for all of them to be connected to highly important people and also being some of the most magically powerful in their age group? The timing of this offer is also far too convenient to not be tied to this. If I am wrong about this then it will still be a very valuable learning opportunity for you. But if I am right, then whatever Pendragon is gathering so many talented apprentices for might end up with another world changing event like when she took over the old empire."
I looked at my sons, fourteen years old and already making me facepalm at the ridiculous situations they've somehow gotten themselves into. Greggory somehow became a harem protagonist, with a dandere childhood friend and the girl who has been crushing on him for years now, Susanna Domizia. A tsundere and himedere who was his "rival" in magic, Reinhild Tanne. A kuudere and the second daughter of the current Tzarina, Irina Zacharov. And finally, the sort of yandere but thankfully benign token mundane, Tallis l'Archer aka the mini-me of my spymaster.
Greggory had been attempting to mediate between them all, knowing that letting the close relatives of very important people and powerful mages try to tear each other's throats out was a bad idea but well… As most harem animes have taught me, the harem protagonist himself tends to be a bad choice of mediator especially when they were barely old enough to enter high school. And that meant I had to step in sooner or later, which was why I was going to gather them all up in the next week or so to give them The Talk.
Of course, just because Greggory managed to turn himself into a harem protagonist, that doesn't leave Johen out of the running for who has the most ridiculous life so far. Somehow, he became a young adult novel protagonist and kept getting involved in conspiracies and such over the last two years. First he and Luciana, the cousin to Susanna, stumbled across a poor assassination attempt on myself which somehow prompted them to think they should sneak around and try to uncover who is behind the plot.
And of course, them playing scooby doo over the course of a year somehow led to a dozen different plots falling apart spectacularly because they were all roughly connected together just enough. Said dozen plans had actually been left there intentionally by me and the older l'Archer so we could more easily keep track of who wants me dead and for what reason. Of course, after teaching the two, that maybe they should talk to the specialists that normally handle such things instead of trying to handle it themselves, they then get pulled into another conspiracy.
And then he got into some crazy again somewhat recently, this time concerning a minor Chaos cult that was trying to pop up in a nearby town that the two of them had been vacationing at in celebration of their betrothal. Said betrothal only having happened at their own stubborn insistence that "of course they would never have anyone but their dearly beloved alongside them!" Bah!
Ahem… At least with this last bit of shenanigans, Johen had actually messaged me about it and gotten my permission to figure it out on his own. Well… As on his own as he could be when I was secretly monitoring the situation and ready to jump in to help at literally light speed. Long story short, most of the town had secretly been Chaos and there was only a burnt out husk that remained of that town thanks to the pyromaniac, Luciana and a tiny bit of help from me.
And now the two of them wanted to go off together to the badlands where they might stumble across a waaagh! Or three that need to be stopped all the while accidently seducing elves, dwarfs, and maybe a dragon or two or who knows what! Perhaps a greenskin or maybe a daemon somehow?
"Alright, I'll let you all go on this trip but if something comes up that you can't handle, you will get me and I will handle it." Their smiles brightened my day, but there were a couple things I still needed to cover before I let them go cause havoc on the world.
"Greggory, try to restrain yourself and keep your harem from going past a dozen, I doubt even with your durability and how little you need to sleep that you could keep up with more than that." I told him, much to his embarrassment.
Thankfully he got over his denial of his having a harem at all. Dense harem protagonists were never funny to begin with and I refused to let one of my kids be one. Johen who had looked amused at his brother's suffering paled slightly as I turned to him.
"And no grandchildren until you are at least eighteen and married, understand? This goes to you too Greggory but considering how much your harem already prevents each other from getting some, I doubt it will be hard for you. But I know that you and Luciana are getting to that age that you want to go further than some light petting Johen, but you and Luciana aren't ready for kids and I still want to live in denial about being old enough to have grandkids for a while longer, okay?" I demanded, leaving both of them to nod, mortified. Much better.
"Good, now make sure to listen to your uncle Helmann while you're over there. With naval support being plentiful along the coastlines, you shouldn't have too much of a problem defending the new settlements but if it gets dangerous just fall back to behind the Border Wall. Got it?" Oi! Don't roll your eyes at me, even if you are demigods, you can still die damn it!
"If I lost either of you, I'd make what I did to the Silver Pinnacle look like a child kicking an anthill." I told them while strongarming them into a hug, damn teenagers not wanting to hug their mother even in private. Releasing them, I let them flee the room so they can look stoic like the manly men that they were. I wiped away the dust in my eyes, they grow up so fast.
Greggory Pendragon was not who she thought she would fall in love with, she hadn't even considered falling in love with someone and had been under the impression that she would follow her mother's method in just picking someone of adequate qualities and political connections and marrying them to generate an heir who could hopefully take over as spymaster and left hand of the empress much like she planned to take over for her mother when the time came.
No, she, Tallis l'Archer, hadn't thought she would fall in love with anyone, let alone one of the heirs to the throne and potentially her future emperor. Not that she regretted it at all, even now as she and the other girls who dared attach themselves to Her prince entered Her Majesty's personal study or at least the public one. Not that she knew where the private one was but she knew it at least existed, benefits of being the child of the left hand of the god empress and all.
The other members of Her prince's "harem" were all mages which put her at a disadvantage but that just meant she needed to exploit her more unique advantages to the fullest to make sure that Her prince made the right choice. That those advantages involved sabotage of her competitors was only natural considering her future occupation.
She looked around the room at her competition as they picked their places to sit. Irina boldly chose the centermost chair in front of the god empress's desk, reinhild refused to back down from such a challenge and took the chair next to Irina's while shy Susanna forced herself to take the opposite chair, displaying her hidden steel spine. With her surveillance completed, she chose a more reserved spot off to the side but still within sight of her empress.
"Good, you are all here and on time. Let me cut to the chase, the four of you are all genuinely interested in Greggory as a person and wish to marry him at some point. As you all should be aware, he has been refusing to pick one of you. Both because he does care for all of you and because that means angering the other three and damaging Drachenreich relations with those backing each of you. That ends today, right here." The mountain erasing mother informed them. She and the others all kept silent despite them all clearly wishing to argue their case as tension filled the air and the goddess in mortal form locked gazes with each of them.
"Since this has been causing quite a bit of stress on my son and none of you have been able to come to terms, I have been forced to come up with my own compromise which I doubt many of you will like. You all may not know this but it is currently legal to marry multiple spouses in Drachenreich, something that was made legal about a decade ago to handle the massive disparity between the number of women wanting a husband and the pitiful number of still living men willing to take on a wife.
Each of you must decide whether or not you can live peacefully with being married to each other and possibly even more as well as Greggory. If you can't then you will give up on marrying him. Because I guarantee you, I will personally kill you all if you all start trying to kill each other in order to become his only wife. And if you even try to harm him personally or any future child of his then rest assured that I am perfectly capable of doing some very bad things to your soul." The empress paused here to take a breath but she and Her prince's other harem members couldn't even think of doing so as their minds swirled in face of the "compromise" that was being forced upon them.
She then blinked as the tension in the air suddenly disappeared as if the immense levels of bloodlust tinged pressure never existed and the empress was cheerfully smiling at them as if she hadn't just threatened to destory or torture their souls if one of them even tried to harm her son and future grandchildren. "You have until you leave to the badlands to tell me your decision, if you don't I will count you as bowing out. Think hard on this, girls. This decision will be life changing and you might not have the chance to back out or rejoin later on if you change your mind. You're all dismissed to think about everything and what you're willing to live with for the rest of your life." She was in shock as she cheerfully shooed out of the empress's study and absently started to walk back to her own room.
What would she do now? Give up on Her prince and be forced to watch from afar as her competitors got to marry him? Never! But could she really live with the fact other women got to sleep with Her prince? Her Majesty was right in that Her prince deserved to have his wives united and working together for his benefit but could she really live with sharing Her prince with others? She didn't know… She did know that she wasn't willing to ever risk Her Majesty's wrath if she found she was unhappy with her choice.
'Come on Tallis, break it down into more manageable chunks.' She thought to herself.
Susanna would be easy enough to live alongside, the girl had a steel spine under her shyness that could make her surprisingly difficult at times but she was easy to get along with generally. Reinhild often… Annoyed her with her, as Her Majesty put it, "tsundere" attitude towards Her prince but that could be tolerated and worked on in the future… And it was fun to fluster her by poking at her true feelings.
Irina though… She set her on edge both because of her aloof persona and by being a foreigner. Susanna might technically be a Tilean and Reinhild was technically from the old empire but they had lived most of their life in Drachenreich and they might as well have been born one culturally. Irina, though, had only arrived a year ago in Drachenreich and was definitely still at least somewhat loyal to Kislev. That double loyalty could cause her to stab them in the back and harm Her prince which was Unacceptable to say the least.
But that just meant she had to be there to make sure Irina didn't have the chance to do so and she was interested in seeing what the snow princess was like when melted by Her prince. If others besides those three wanted to get close to Her prince? Well… she was sure that her fellow wives would help in redirecting or even removing them altogether. One compromise was enough.
I think my first shovel talk went pretty well, I got to not so subtly threaten the girls to stop being a bunch of bitches and had been slowly ramping up to near Ranma One Half level of shenanigans in their pursuit of Greggory while also finally being able to pull off that hilarious tone shift where I go from absolutely terrifying to bright and cheery in the blink of an eye. I couldn't wait to use that last one on those Tilean merchants that thought they could get away with fucking around with my economy just because they were pissy one of their rivals managed to betroth a relative of his to Johen.
Not that said Tilean merchants did much considering the massive trade fleet I had traveling from Marienburg to Lothern to my port cities in the Black Gulf as well as the dwarf's Barak Varr. Honestly, trade has never been better even with parts of Tilea, Estalia, and the whole of Bretonnia being barred from my merchants.
With the removal of the dark elves as well as my own navy's ability to easily outrange and sink enemy ships unless heavily outnumbered, there was very little piracy going on. Especially since that knockoff Pirates Of The Caribbean vampire base that I still half remembered from those days when I was into warhammer fantasy fanfiction all so long ago didn't seem to exist, which likely meant that it came into existence at some point in the future or my existence stopped it from coming about. Not that I really cared beyond the fact I didn't have to deal with vampire pirates in a fortified city.
All that meant that outside of the occasional sea monster and regular ocean sailing problems like storms and food going bad, there was far less than there used to be to interfere with naval trade. Oh sure, the Norscans were still technically a thing but applying naval bombardment backed up with some mages to their coastlines meant the Norscans didn't really have much of a navy or even anywhere to build one.
And with the massive amount of wealth I had gained from that, I was able to finish projects like adding Aegises of Mordred to every major city and town across Drachenreich, building the navy needed to protect such trade routes, and building the Border Wall to block off the badlands from letting in the greenskins. They did start building ships to sail around the land blockage but remember the navy I was just mentioning? Yeah, they didn't get far that way.
Personally, as much as I loved the Border Wall project that I came up with, putting an Aegis of Mordred in every major town and city was definitely one of the biggest things that I've done so far. Mutation was at an all time low as people flocked to the greatest protection they had against the evil green moon. Potential mages were found far, far quicker than before as well as allowing them to escape the pyres and witch hunters that normally would kill them well before they could escape to Drachenruhe. Violent crimes went down massively across Drachenreich as it is far harder to harm someone wearing an invisible suit of armor.
Though, topping all of that, it was spreading the Dragon Guard across the entire expanse I controlled that made the biggest difference. The standardization of fortified waystations across every stretch of road and the introduction of constant patrolling has cut down enormously on deaths by bandit, beastman, skaven, undead, etc.
That it paid decently, gave you training, good quality weapons and armor as well as generally gave you a couple days off each week to do other things like help out on your parents' farm or spend time with your spouse? It was surprisingly popular. Even if I did need to enact surprise inspections in more rural areas to prevent idiots from attempting to take over where they think I'm not watching. And I'm not just talking about Chaos here.
I was probably jinxing myself by thinking about this but it's been pretty quiet these last few years and it was really starting to worry me. By now there should have been a Chaos invasion or massive Skaven attack, or even the Chaos dwarfs invading or something. Maybe I got too used to the madness that had been the first decade or so but going so many years without something big popping up felt unnatural. I wasn't being paranoid, right? This was Warhammer, the longer peace exists, the worse it would be when the peace was broken.
AN: There was supposed to be a lot more going on, closer to the last chapter but somehow I ended writing mostly about the twins and Mordred giving a shovel talk instead...
