The barrier (made of despair), the remnants of the Witch (made of despair) and any familiars (made of despair) all condense themselves into a Grief Seed. The fact that it can carry more is just the icing on the cake for the incubators.

In it's current state it sucks Grief out of a soulgem. Ours is on our collar IIRC, so licking it puts it close enough to cleanse us.
