Cluster News
Hope Springs Eternal: Roquibian has announced that it is expanding its leisure operations following its lucrative deals with the colony of Perkwunos and Rondam Expiditions. According to colonial representative Ulan Batar, they hope to add several major new sites, but the main one is to be a massive artisanal water park, named Hope Spring in commemoration of those that fell in the recent fighting to protect colonies like them in the Traverse. In the meantime, the colony is offering discounts to members of the two fleets currently resting within the cluster.
Uptick in small raids: Warnings have been issued across the cluster due to several raids on smaller transport vessels. These attacks have been swift and thus far primarily been targeted at ships that have strayed from normal transportation lanes. At this time, It remains unknown who has been carrying out these operations, while Matriarch Polan and Vice Admiral Fullers have been reportedly nervous to cast their net over a wider area for fear that this is an intentional distraction so the pirates can perform a major strike. Even with the end of the Traverse War, it seems that blood will continue to be shed.
Fleets staying put: Under orders from their respective commanders, the now reinforced 4th Task Force and 4th Patrol Fleet are remaining put. The former is continuing to stand watch primarily over the colony of Olmantsi while the latter watches over the region's human colonies. This represents a fairly significant concentration of force, although it is not expected that both will remain here for long. As it stands, both fleets have run the occasional joint exercise, and are working together "well" if the information released to the public can be believed.
Odd goings on at Kadris: The newest colony of the cluster has been undergoing rapid development by the Batarians, with the Hegemony bringing in larger numbers of "slave caste" workers than normal in order to grow the Helium-3 plants quicker. However, large numbers of slaves are reportedly going missing. We pray that this is because they are finding some means of escape and not due to them having met a grisly end.
Corporation branches out: With the success of their eezo refinery on Perkwunuos, Nal'Vatanis Extractions has decided to go for the bold move of effectively buying the mineral rights for all dead systems in the cluster. While this is a massive area to exploit and a huge investment of capital, if they manage to pull it off then Nal'Vatanis will rapidly expand in size and ability. Despite this acquisition being criticized as overextension by many leading economists, we will have to wait before seeing how it goes for them.
Systems Alliance News
Eternal Earth raided: Eternal Earth is a highly xenophobic terrorist group that formed in the immediate aftermath of the First Contact War. Known for absolutist rhetoric, the group has been involved in numerous bombings against pro-Citadel politicians and public figures. They even attempted to assassinate the Pope at a public appearence. However, this year their headquarters were finally tracked down and raided. Recovered plans indicate that one of their members, Ivor Johnstagg, intended to try and assassinate Venta Tox, the Volus ambassador to the Citadel who was coming to witness the start of this year's exchange programme. If attempted, never mind successful, this would have been a severe blow to humanities chance to gain an embassy on the Citadel.
Bugs, bugs, and bugs: Over the last few years SAI has reportedly been disarming bugs from dozens of non-human groups. The most prominent has been the Salarian Special Tasks Group, but Hegemony Intelligence has been a close second. Terra Firma has gained ground by stating that this is proof of the untrustworthiness of aliens. The galactic community's response has been mixed. The Salarians seem almost brazen, the Hanar apologetic, the Batarians denied it while the Volus and Asari seem apoplectic with anger. The only bugging devices not discovered were from the Turians, who seem somewhat bemused. Whether this means they didn't plant any or simply kept theirs well hidden is unknown, and no doubt a major source of stress for SAI.
Colonial Rights: While the Systems Alliance parliament was initially hailed as a great bulwark of change for humanity, the fact remains that creating it was an effort in cooperation and compromise. What resulted was not what the originators of the idea intended, as the majority of power still lies on Earth, or at least Sol, while the power of the rapidly growing and multiplying colonies is comparatively minor. However, with several successes already under the belt of the institution, colonial interest groups are agitating for them to be given more rights and broader representation. While Terra Firma has protested any reforms in their usual lockstep, the fact remains that there are many in support of such an idea both on and off Earth. What they lack is the ability to agree on what should be changed.
Educational Exchange: As of this year, exchange students will be going further than they ever dreamed. To Thessia, Palavan, Surkesh, Dekuna, Kahje and Irune, they will be going to learn at institutions older than many human civilizations. In return, many students from across Citadel Space will be coming to the Systems Alliance to study at the Universities of Oxbridge, Hong Kong, Harvard, and more. With luck, this will enrich all involved. Of all Citadel-aligned species, only the Batarian Hegemony refused this, although refusing exchange programs is the Hegemony's standard policy under orders from the Department of Information Control.
Close Inspection by Batarians?: The Batarian Hegemony has been sending numerous ships into and around Alliance Space. So far, nothing even slightly criminal has been proven, but they are oddly enthusiastic about searching around.
Galactic News
Humans for Citadel: While the species involved voted on it last year, it was officially confirmed by the Council that they have received the application for an embassy and expect it to be finalised by next year. This has prompted a wave of celebrations among the more optimistic parts of the galaxy, welcoming another enthusiastic member of the galactic community. Others are impressed at how quickly an embassy is being granted, stating that it is proof of humanity's worth, although historians are quick to point out that the last embassy was granted hundreds of years ago. Now that it doesn't take months or even years to travel between polities, of course it's faster. Others have taken a more sober view of the matter, concerned about humanity's fast paced expansion and explosive rate of militarisation, although given the recent Traverse War not many are truly leaping to judge.
Revolutionary Dark Matter study begins: Dark Matter is considered an integral part of the Mass Effect; actual knowledge of the mysterious substance is much less concrete. As such, a cooperative effort between several research institutes and universities funded by the Council intends to finally unravel its secrets and get to the bottom of the matter. Although some pundits have noted that this promise is made regularly enough to set your clock by it, there is a faint hope that new technologies and the newly accessible human body of research on the subject will mean that
this time results can be achieved.
Scandal on Sur'Kesh: After a deep investigation by Lanadal Journal, it has been discovered that Dalatrass Tyreen has been violating reproductive law. While she has already publicly fertilised the maximum number of eggs allowed, the Dalatrass has proceeded to fertilise nearly fifty more. The logic behind this action remains unknown, but the Dalatrass has been arrested and the eggs taken by child protection regardless.
Ward Murders remain Unsolved: After nearly 10 years, the murderer of Golvin Ward remains at large, with another body added to a painfully long and bloody list. Executor Tyran has stated that he intends to retire if he cannot catch the perpetrator soon. The distinct style of murder, via strangulation, suggests a very strong individual, especially since a Krogan is among the dead. Despite initial outcry that a Krogan was responsible, C-Sec has categorically denied this to be the case, releasing information that confirms the constrictor could not anatomically be a Krogan.
Turian Leadership Criticized: Tyros Lidanus was the Turian Councilor until the First Contact War. After protesting Hierarchy actions against humanity, and publicly lambasting General Desolas Arterius who lead the invasion, Lidanus was recalled by Primarch Fedorian and stripped of his position. Cast from the halls of power, his replacement Sparatus was elevated to the position immediately. Now quite a way into his forced retirement, Lidanus has published a book entitled
"The Death of Integrity: A Story of Bloodthirst". Here he criticizes Primarch Fedorian for following in the steps of his predecessors in Turian High Command, being far too willing to utilise war as their first option rather than their last, and more concerned with the idea of warriors rather than protectors. This controversial book has fanned the flames of criticism of the Primarch, while the Hierarchy itself has thus far refused to comment.
Carriers Disseminating: With the undoubted success of the Spear of Palaven, several other Council races are taking a shot at building their own, while the Turians have begun construction of a second vessel. Some military commentators have remarked that the Carrier may be the death of the traditional dreadnought, as was the case on the seas. Numerous panels of military analysts have disagreed with this idea, systematically braking down the advantages and disadvantages of a carrier in various scenarios and noting that due to their size they were still under sanction by the Treaty of Farixen and had even higher crew requirements. No matter what advantages they hold in less conventional warfare, during straight fleet battles dreadnoughts are far more useful and capable. One analyst was recorded as stating that "people always say that X is the end of the Dreadnought, but thousands of years later the Dreadnaught is still the peak of naval warfare. The introduction of disruptor torpedo equipped fighters in the first place didn't kill it, ships with more of them won't either, not with modern advances in GARDIAN systems."
