Life Ore Death - DC Feruchemy [Young Justice]

Hmm, other worlds I can think of offhand that would be interesting to see-

Crime Syndicate world. Ferris as a rebel against godlike tyrants, familiar territory for her.

Conjurers- A world in which every tenth person has magic powers, basically modern world but magic is what's mainstream.

Ferris at Mystik U with Zatanna and Sebastian Faust. Watch Ferris avoid rushing with the bee women sorority!
I do, in fact, have vague ideas for a Crime Syndicate counterpart that may or may not turn into a crossover sometime during or after the canon time-skip, or may only be seen in omakes.

I don't have a Justice Lords version version yet because I don't know enough about it based only on the episode to decide anything solid.

...The one big thing I hate about that episode is how little of the mechanics or background we see of it. For example, Lord Superman goes from having left Joker, Ivy, etc., alive-but-lobotomized in Arkham to being willing to kill Flash. What the heck?

And what about every other powered individual on Earth? I've seen a fanfic where Lord Superman burned out Black Canary's vocal chords because she was on TV talking about civil rights, and Zatanna was pre-emptively gotten rid of for nothing at all because magic is Superman's main weakness, and it's true that we didn't see other people except for that brief snippet with Lord Supes and Lois...

Personally, I have the headcanon that part of Luthor's rise to power included - either intentionally or not, or maybe there were just natural causes in the same time period - the death of Ma & Pa Kent, because there's just too much crazy stuff for me to fully reconcile with.

As to the other universes - or even the Lords or the Syndicate - I don't know enough to think of much but if anyone wants to write out an omake where ferris ended up there or whatever, be my guest.

Dang it Obloquy! How am I supposed to convince people to support Shayera as chairwoman if you don't give her any lines?! No comment on military, allegiances, age, maturity, league recommendations... My vision for the future is rusting away!
Eh, even if she's not going to be the next Chair, I'm planning that she'll be one of them some time during the 2011-2016 period.

What if she ended up in the world of My Hero Academia, where the vast majority of the population has some sort of power to the point that super heroism is regulated by the government. Where going through a hero school, apprenticing under established heroes through student internships, and getting a license to operate independently as a super hero is considered the norm?

Would Renka appreciate the degree to which super heroes are held accountable in that world, or would she chafe at that level of restriction and amount of time it takes to go through the process. Granted, unlicensed vigilantes do exist in that world, but the government and licensed heroes are extremely leery of them.

And for those of you familiar with My Hero Academia, I have another question. What would happen if Stain and Ferris met? Would her self sacrificing nature make her a "worthy hero" in his eyes, or would he try to kill her because he thought she was too sadistic to be a hero? What would she think of him?
She would probably approve of the process, yes, and be much more comfortable with the one idea of Quirks than with all the different power origins on Earth-16. Don't know about Stain, but anyone else is, again, welcome to write about them meeting.

But yeah Lex's voice is great in this. Cold, clinical, undeniably smart without showing off excessively and with a thread of casual racism against non-humans woven through it all. His thoughts on Superboy/Connor are actually really creepy because of how ..... understated the truly nasty stuff really is. He thinks of Connor as a tool or thing in this calm almost bored way that you could almost miss that he does it.

Kudo's to @Obloquy for giving us a YJ flavor Lex Luthor done well.
Thank you!

The problem isn't just Match's education; there's a reason that Conner is saner then Match, and that using the shields slowly takes that away and pushes him closer to him. It's because their cloning techniques are flawed when applied to Kryptonians. Match would need medical alteration that no one knows how to do to 'fix.'
There are multiple reasons, which will be explained later. Remember how I said they'd theoretically have an easier time making a Supergirl clone if she existed here? That's also a part of it.

Certainly possible, depending on the state of their Purple Ray technology.

For example, one of Donna's origins was that she was an orphaned girl Diana brought home to the island.

Not being able to compete with the superhumanly strong, fast, and tough amazons, one of the amazons altered the Purple Ray so that it would change Donna's molecular structure to give her WW's powers.

If that's the kind of thing the purple ray is capable of, then I'd imagine the amazons would be quite capable of fixing Match's issues.

Of course the fact that the JL didn't send for an amazon healer is rather suggestive that they don't have such high medical resources in YJ.

Nabu is another idea.

In one of his origins, Nabu stayed on Earth for 5 thousand years, three thousands years of that actively protecting Earth, then 2000 years hibernation to heal the damage that did, but when that failed then turned to living in the helmet and using hosts.

A guy who can keep a body going for five thousand years straight certainly knows a healing spell or two.

As is Icon, since he comes from a society so advanced that giving out kryptonian like powers is considered basic first aid.
All good ideas, and are likely to be discussed when I get around to a more in-depth talk about their course of action.

I didn't have them having a Purple Healing Ray up until now, but I might be able to fit it in with some other things they'll have... It isn't at all reliable if it does exist, however, and they have no idea if using it on a non-human is a good idea.

A little red light and he's as strong as a regular human, and from there he can grow on Atlantis, Mars, or somewhere else properly shielded or remote.
:D You and the others all appear to be missing one of the obvious options....

Hmm... Now I'm tempted to post early just so I can watch all your reactions. Maybe a New Year's special installment? Opinions?

"Why does a force representative of the planet require guards? If it is powerful enough to protect the Century Children, why, to the best of your knowledge, are they necessary to protect it?"
This quote from a while back stuck with me, as a possible reason could be that the force is too big in a way, too powerful, to do anything without mass destruction.

Maybe a New Year's special installment? Opinions?
New years special is always nice. As for options, using blood magic to take Matchs flight and giving it to connor?

The comic book answer would be depowering him and letting him live with the Kent family. Here… I'd consider one of the world FATE is responsible for to be on the table.

Ah Lex, just because no-one can convict you doesn't mean anybody trusts you. And you just revealed your telepathic kill switch and gave the team two examples of your bugs for dissection.

Hmm.
Brain overwritten with Conner's memories? Superboy 2.1?
Green Kryptonite (wrapped in lead on five of six sides) hearing aide tuned to weaken him just enough?
Spray on tanning solution that blocks yellow sunlight?
Already mentioned the Amazon solution...
LIKED the Atlantis option.
Power inhibitor collar from the prison?
Magical version of any of the above?
Stick him in the FATE helmet and have Nabu stay at the controls?

Also: Any chance the clone becomes one of the Century Children? (or is that another fic?)

Edit: Nabu. Cloning. Why haven't they considered cloning Nabu a new Kent Nelson body?

You forgot asking either new gods or superman for help, pretty sure the fortress of solitude is a thing in young justice

New Gods is something specific I forgot, but it sort of falls under the 'magic version of x' option.

As for the Fortress of Solitude... I remembered but dropped it due to
  • Superman is being a dick to existing son, the whole 'Another one!' speech is avoidable.
  • A Lex Luthor produced clone would be a security risk to put into the Fortress, leading to all kinds of KR_Schitzotech falling into Luthor/Light hands... bugged, recovered and memory downloaded, programmed to steal/destroy.

Also: Any chance the clone becomes one of the Century Children? (or is that another fic?)

Edit: Nabu. Cloning. Why haven't they considered cloning Nabu a new Kent Nelson body?
Century Children incorporated is in Life Ore Death, yes. You don't become a Century Child like that, however, not anymore than you become a Libra after being born a Sagittarius. Less so, since the force behind them wouldn't choose a new one like that, either.

Biological cloning wouldn't mean the body was necessarily mystically potent, much the same way any clone of Ferris would not be another Sliver of Entropy. And either the clone would have its own will and personality, or it wouldn't and the Helmet wouldn't be able to "attach". That's ignoring the ethical issues of it, as well.

EDIT: Also, most of the other options in the quoted post don't actually address the "Match is unstable/insane and can't operate in normal society as a person even without powers" part.

  • Superman is being a dick to existing son, the whole 'Another one!' speech is avoidable.
 Now that is another fic, as well as YJ canon, because they're better off and getting along in Life Ore Death. Conner has even been to the Kent farm, as of a little bit before Halloween.

This quote from a while back stuck with me, as a possible reason could be that the force is too big in a way, too powerful, to do anything without mass destruction.
Too big, too busy, and you don't get to be at that level without learning a bit about delegation (along with trying new tactics, instead of always stomping on annoying ants in person, because eventually one might be poisonous).

I see; I always heard delegation was a key to success in life, guess its also a key to success of life.

Obviously the solution is to send Match to Arkham and have him end up as just another member of Batman's Rogues' Gallery. :V

Or Delirium could drop by and make a friend. He might still be crazy afterwards, but at least it would be a more sentient sort of crazy.

The latter option would also mean that, depending on what point we're at in the Sandman canon, Destruction might have the chance to meet Renka while he's in the neighborhood. That would be something I'd really like to see.

As always, my creativity goes in to overdrive while I try to sleep...

If I remember Volcano ark correctly, Renka should be able to provided at very minimum temporary solution to Match health even without Spikes.

He is pureblood. Defective and corrupted, but still full Kryptonian - unlike Superboy.

Order magic seems like it should be useful for restoration and Kryptonians don't have any enhanced defense against magic. Considering Doctor Fate has a better relationship with the team in this fic that might be an option to consider.

Plan of Action - part 9
Life Ore Death
* November 25 [Overview]

"I was hurt from the blast of heat vision," a bandaged M'gann continued to explain to Superman, "but I still sent out my message."

"And that was the signal to wake me up inside of Wolf, and jump over to take control of Match," finished Jericho through Match's vocal chords. "I… still can't take control of anyone for more than an hour at a time, and we knew we'd need more time than that to unravel everything that was going on, but Mister Dubbilex took us to a cavern he'd carved out to make a home for the missing Genomorphs."

"I see," Superman said carefully, keeping one incredulous eye on Match's possessed body while, behind him, the machinery in the Fortress of Solitude worked at constructing and preparing a new, hopefully temporary stasis pod for him.

"Dubbilex had some of the G-Gnomes use their telepathy to keep Match out of it while we figured things out," Robin continued from his perch at a drowsy Zatanna's side, "and Zee teleported us down there to be on-hand for first aid and discussing everything. Dubbilex was pretty traught about everything, and he said he wanted to rehabilitate Match, get him up and out like Superboy while keeping things aster."

"I'd felt Match's mind, and I knew that wasn't going to be an easy task," M'gann continued. "I showed Dubbilex what I'd seen of his thought processes and we had this big debate about it in the middle of Genomorph City while Conner was still under Zatanna's sleep spell in the pod, and on through when he was out searching Cadmus to make a big distraction for Luthor's cameras."

"In the end, Miss M proved her point by shape-shifting into you, and Match went berserk even through the telepathic calming," Robin added. "Then she got Conner to tell Dubbilex about all the equipment and medical stuff in the Fortress of Solitude that could help."

Jericho picked up the thread from there. "Zatanna put him back to sleep with another sleep spell, and while we were working everything out Zatanna made a simulacrum of Match out of mud, enchanted to look like him." He shot the exhausted young magician a look. "Then she teleported us out of the building, too, and we took the Bio-Ship here. Is the stasis pod going to be done soon? I only have another ten minutes, and Zatanna or M'gann probably can put Match under again until my limit resets, but they both don't have a lot left in them."

<The stasis pod will be fully assembled within 5 minutes. >

"Thank you," Superman said to the computerized simulation of Jor-El. Then, "Isn't there a time-limit on Zatanna's spells?"

"Yeah, but given that we found another Kryptonian clone, there's every reason for the Justice League to send people in for even more searching sometime soon," Robin reasoned. "Her double should last for most of today, so if… if Doctor Fate," Robin continued with a slight grimace and a reflexive touch to Zatanna's arm, "goes down to do 'mystic scrying' for more secrets sometime tonight, it's not like anyone in Cadmus would be able to tell if he put a more permanent double in there. That's what she figured, and it makes sense, right?"

"That and the teleports in and out of Genomorph City really exhausted her," M'gann added. "I… don't know why I'd thought she'd be perking up by now, but… this isn't going to be permanent, right?"

"Food, rest, and maybe medicine for a fever if she gets one," Superman summarized. "You don't need to worry."

"We're staying whelmed," Robin confirmed, though he didn't sound totally confident. "It's just good that today's a day for a lot of food, followed by a long weekend for sleep." He stroked a soft touch through Zatanna's hair, and Clark wondered briefly if Bruce would need to have a talk with Robin. Then he remembered that this was Bruce, and decided said talk had probably already happened.

Batman wasn't one to miss much, especially when it came to his pseudo-son.

And if not, Alfred would pick up the slack.

Soon after, the stasis pod was ready, and Superman sadly watched Jericho maneuver Match's body inside, before evacuating his host in the last few seconds. "I… will stay here to run a few tests with the Fortress's medical equipment," he decided. "Thank you, everyone. For what you did today." He hesitated. "I had assumed… Conner isn't here. Do you know whether he returned to the Mountain, or to have Thanksgiving with my family?" The other members of the Team present shared an uncomfortable look.

"He hasn't sent a distress signal or anything," Robin fussed. "Man, talk about not asterous; we go through all those hoops to stay safe and secret, then at the very end we forget to have a check-in time just in case- man!" He clapped an exasperated hand to his forehead.

"I remember he'd said he was going to have Thanksgiving with you," M'gann recalled. "I'd assumed he had gone over there." She bit her lip, then announced, "I'm going to check at the mountain and try to reach his communicator."

"Ditto," Robin agreed, hoisting Zatanna up as she blinked blearily. "I'll track down his location, or Wolf, or Sphere."

"I'll join you when I'm finished here-," Superman began.

< Recognized: Miss Martian, B05. >

"-but don't hesitate to call me sooner if you find anything problematic.," he finished.

"Will do," Robin promised, and Jericho saluted as the three of them sped through the Zeta Tubes.

< Recognized: Zatanna, B08. >
< Recognized: Robin, B01. >
< Recognized: Jericho, B09. >

"-can't believe you-,"

"Whoa," Robin muttered as they emerged, "M'gann's really throwing a fit." Then he winced. "Ohh, don't tell me…"

"Look, I'm sorry, but it was just one leg!" Wally frantically apologized. "I'm already ready to make it up to you, so please cut me some slack! I have plenty of self-control about not eating," he added grumpily, "but this was stress-eating, not just me being hungry."

[What were you so stressed about that you ate a turkey leg?] Jericho asked 'out loud' with some amusement; it wasn't his Thanksgiving turkey after all. [Is this normal for him or not; I wouldn't really know yet,] Jericho added in a message directly to Robin.

"What had you so stressed out safe here in the Mountain when we were on the mission?" Robin asked with some annoyance. Wally might've been his best friend, but M'gann had gone to a lot of trouble about this and it was supposed to be Zee's Thanksgiving too. [He's had some issues in the past, but usually he's good about only eating his food now. Stress eating is still a thing for him, though,] Robin added mentally.

"'Cause I didn't feel safe stuck 'here in the Mountain' with a friggin' apoplectic Ferris!"

Admittedly, that gave the rest of them some pause admist the moments of snorted laughter, if only because he'd sounded so vehement.

"Right. Where is Ferris?" Robin carefully asked. "Isn't she still around here?" Wally shivered, only slightly, but the rest of them caught it.

And suddenly the idea wasn't so funny.

"She stalked back off to her room after you left Cadmus," he informed them. "Rolled. Wasn't until after she was gone I realized I'd even eaten a turkey leg," he added apologetically. "She just… Maybe you should look it up on camera, but this was the first time I've really seen her as scary. Or really angry, instead of just, you know, how she normally is. The longer Conner was in Cadmus, the more she just kept scowling, and not-quite-fidgeting, and muttering horrible things under her breath. Most of it wasn't even in English, but it was horrible," he insisted.

"…Why did she do that?" M'gann asked, clearly not convinced but still willing to listen.

Wally threw up his arms dramatically. "Heck if I know what set her off; I flat out didn't feel safe asking."

[…Robin, thoughts?] M'gann sent tentatively.

[Um… First,] he told her, [we still need to check on Conner, but Wally really should know better-,]

[Oh come on Rob, I do know better when I'm not near mindless from marinating in my own terror!] Robin and M'gann flinched, embarrassed that he'd 'overheard' their conversation. Jericho glanced around, carefully grabbed Zatanna, and decided he didn't feel confident enough to play peacekeeper. [I think this was that aura thing or whatever it was, but it was bad! Cut me some slack, I'll pay you back.]

[And just how do you expect to do that?] M'gann snapped irately. [Vomit it up? We're not caroo'oun!]

[Um, guys?] The three senior members' heads snapped around to glare at Jericho. He prompted them, [Conner?]

M'gann gave the mental equivalent a gasp, and the flickering images of her thoughts conveyed the issue to Wally faster than would have been healthy. He winced, rubbed the bridge of his nose, and sent some wordless, vague intent back in agreement.

M'gann bit her lip.

[Wally, we're going to go find Conner,] she decided. [We need to make sure he's safe. You have until we do and get back to make this right, and then everyone eating at the Mountain will decide how many months of dishwashing you do, or, or- whatever!]

[With an extension if we call for help finding him,] Robin added conscientiously, with the mental conveyance that safety was the most important thing. Wally hurriedly nodded and raced off.

[I'll… go put Zatanna in her room,] Jericho hesitantly suggested, to approving nods.

[And then you're free to go back to your family,] M'gann invited before she flew away. [Or stay, and we'll add more chairs to the table.]

[Thanks a bunch for coming on short notice,] Robin added before he hustled off to the Tubes after her.

So after all that care, Conner had no backup when he met Luthor the 2nd time. So close to a perfect op too. Let's hope that the command didn't mess up his memory too much.

Interesting to hear Renka was so out of control as to terrify her bestie. Also looks like it was just Wolf around to hear Superboy's mental trigger? Worrying.

I find myself wondering if Ferris is in danger of accidentally breaking something in her current emotional state. If I recall correctly, Batman mentioned in one of his private records that Ferris was able to access the Watch Tower on her own at first, even though she hadn't been given access, because her powers were causing glitches in the system to prevent it from blocking her entry without her even realizing it. So if her aura is volatile enough for Kid Flash to feel it, could that much raw anger mixed with her mantle cause a few systems in the mountain to malfunction? Like, are there going to be shattered lights in the hallways she went through because her mantle flared up and fried them?

At her current (not to mention still recovering) power level, definitely not when it comes to breaking things without touching them; that would be a long ways away from her right now.

There might be some glitches when she tries to use the systems to open or close a door, etc., but she mostly has to be interacting with something to affect it, and even then....

At the moment, anything she could try to do would either require some additional "fuel" to go with deliberate intent, or it would act more like a buff/bonus to an action than it would a deliberate breaking spell.

For instance, consider a plastic water cup or something. Those things are pretty hard to break just by dropping them, and I once threw once at a wall full force to no effect.

If Ferris deliberately did the same thing - throw a plastic cup at a wall, bring her fist down on a piece of wooden furniture, or something similar - then if it was possible for it to break without mystic assistance, her aura would subconsciously make it more likely to happen in a way that would make that happen.

So she can't break a stone wall down without super-strength, and she doesn't know where the weak areas and cleavage points in the stones are, but if she swings a metal pickaxe at a stone wall while utilizing her aura, then she's much more likely to hit one of those spots at one of the angles that would cause a piece to break off.

Of course, she's equally more likely to hit in a way that would break the pickaxe somehow, unless she figures out a way to control it.

I forgot to mention how upset I was at how they League discussed best girl Ghost Fox Killer, during that whole meeting scene.

The way that they view other hero's from certain countries is a bit... off putting?

Like, Mother of Heroes can't help what her power is. Do they expect her to just... subject herself to the pain of losing every single one of her children or do they expect her to just never have children at all?

GFK doesn't have any say in how her power manifests either. You touch her, you die. That's it. That she decided to try and do good with a power like that says more about her than anything else, regardless of the nationalism that is undoubtedly involved in her decision.

The League just looking pretty funny in the light and their lack of either knowledge or understanding is ironically the exact reason that their friendly Lord of Order had to do what they did. And they still do not get that.

Of course, she's equally more likely to hit in a way that would break the pickaxe somehow, unless she figures out a way to control it.

Hmm... that seems like a

situation. Why wouldn't both the wall and the pickaxe take damage? The wall taking damage doesn't seem like it would make the pickaxe taking damage LESS likely, and it's still a single event. Is there some reason why her aura would pick one or the other rather then both, as both seems like that would be maximizing Ruin.

Sounds a lot like her fortune manipulation.
E: Well isn't that an interesting rating @Obloquy
