Because it is, the QM is walking us through the twenty questions of FFG l5r's character creation. The two questions at this point are somewhat linked but only somewhat.

The first question naturally being 'What is our relationship with our clan' which if positive gives us glory *or* 1 rank of skill in anything unranked at this point. Its typically accepted that getting another skill for free is worth the glory hit, and I tend to agree. The Strain then is what skill we picked up.

The second question is a question of how we feel about honour, generally if you say positive you get some honour if you say negative then you get to pick from 1 of 5 skills to pick up a rank in.
(Commerce: Buying and selling shit,
Labour: Catch all but usually related to making practical things and cooking
Skullduggery: The generic sneaky criminal shit, this isn't how you sneak though that's fitness
Seafaring: Self explanatory but also as per l5r tradition knotmaking and ropework
Survival: General ability to live off the land and control animals)

I knew the heterodoxy option would give us a skill but I wasn't sure the strain option would do so as well. After QMs response I'm changing my vote. And if I'm not wrong survival while good for what it is also helps a lot when in mounted combat because its used instead of fitness checks.

Considering that we've been disregarded as fallen because of a strategic marriage(?), I'm left with the impression that gaining honor means we're politely 'not talked about' in Scorpion circles, or just pitied.

Is any of this valid?

We have been made ronin because our liege could no longer afford to honor the vows of vassalage and fealty - read, keep people fed and equipment. So we and a few others were let go instead of all vassals suffering famine and poverty. Our Status, Glory and Honor reflect how the clan sees us.
So, if we keep good relationship with the clan and get Glory, you are still seen as "one of us", suffering an unfortunate trick of Destiny and our trials being us being the good bean and avoiding embarrassment for our liege; if we do not, we have annoyed enough people in the clan that they figure "heh, they deserved becoming a ronin".
Honor-wise, it is internal; if we believe ourselves to still be Good And Proper Scorpion, we believe we would still fit in - giving us more social capital to throw around and gamble. If we do not, we believe that we have crossed some line, in one way or another; we are ready to do things we would perhaps not do before.

The benefits of skills (knowledge) are self evident. Still being seen as part of the clan and/or your self-image still fitting that of who you were and meeting your mental image of a Scorpion samurai has other, more intricate and uncertain advantages.

What marriage?

As for honor in of Legend of the Five Rings, its a stats which show how much a character is invested in following the code of Bushido w. High honor gives virtues and low honor gives us disadvantages.

The other counterpart of honor is glory which is another stat basically showing how renewed a character is. Again high gives advantages and low disadvantages

And then we have status which is pretty self explanatory. Its how high up the social ladder a character is.

    Advantages define both types of challenges we may encounter, as well as situations we usually coast through. They usually give us reroll, or may just allow us to auto-succeed at something.
    Disadvantages put us in a Situation, but they offer us a chance to get resources (Void point).

    I don't think support is as good a distinction as the other ones. Its the only one (besides arguably Portentous Birth) that is only useful because a third party is involved.

    As for Bentens Curse it would be almost cruel to our character lol to have his desire for love be stymied by an almost supernatural force.

    Is Bentens Curse a love obssession in 5E? In 4E it was just that people felt you were unpleasant to be around.

    E: Ah, this is the resources thing? Easier to invoke the disadvantage to get a void point when you make a bad decision to pursue romance without taking control of other npcs to make them less inclined to like you?

    It is a valid write in, just be sure to see the setting assumptions on the header about bigotry for the expectations of how that may manifest in game.

    I don't think any new votes will be coming in. Since I don't really want a tie I'll be switching my vote, blood feud was my first choice anyways and quick reflexes are always nice in combat situations and outside them.
