You were sent from an early age to train as a warrior; your schooling was like that of many lesser scions or lower nobles: there was no idea where you may serve and for what, so you were given the basics to eventually master whatever path Duty and Destiny laid before you. If not for the Great Hail, you would probably end up as a bodyguard for some courtly delegation, part of a castle garrison or patrolling back and forth between the roads of the countryside as part of a magistrate's entourage.

[] [Technique] Striking as Air

[] [Technique] Striking as Fire

Pick 5

[] [Skill] Command

[] [Skill] Courtesy

[] [Skill] Fitness

[] [Skill] Martial Arts (Melee)

[] [Skill] Martial Arts (Ranged)

[] [Skill] Tactics

[] [Skill] Sentiment

[] [Skill] Skullduggery

The good thing about such generic, open-ended training, was that it gave you the tools to discover your talents and to develop them at your pace. What did your teachers praise you for as you graduated, forever marking the first impression your clan superiors had about you?

[Student] Creativity, passion, or drive

[Student] Grace, eloquence, or empathy

[Student] Adaptability, friendliness, or awareness

[Student] Thoroughness, patience, or calm

[Student] Self-awareness, insight of mysticism.

But whatever charismas were dealt to you, they could not prevent the high-speed collision with the material conditions laid by the Great Hail. Now one of the people of the waves, you turned towards a new world of people. Bidding farewall to the world of aristocrats, you found easy to disappear among peasants and merchants; they viewed you with suspicion - your blades and bow a reminder of the inherent violence that you represent, - but you became quite adapt in reading them and playing to their anxieties. You learned - and sent reports to your clan superiors - about things that were beneath the notice of most of your former kin: of the impact of the moneylending and tax deregulation in the town of Hirosaka to the River of Gold, to the labor conflicts across the fisheries of Earthquake's Bay, to the recruitment of sailors by the Mantis clan, to the protests of neglected monasteries. Wandering the Scorpion lands as one with its people, you saw how much the current crisis was bleeding them; hemorragying people, as many of them took five-year contracts to serve the Imperial relief efforts or migrating to the lands claimed by Minor Clans or de facto contested territories. Many a travelling companion would share with you stories of hope and despair, of the sadness of having to live the lands they knew all their lives but the promise of relief to their families: it was said that there was always work in the artisan shops of Maemikake, and if you were skilled you could ask for any reward in the expanding dockyards of the Crab and Crane; the Unicorn were aggressively settling new communities near the Shinomen Forest, capitulating in the growing needs of the new autonomous administrative zone.

You are a Bayushi, even without the name or the mon. You knew immediately what was happening.

Someone was building a stronghold.

Someone had seen the direction the wind was blowing and decided there would be further crisis ahead. The River of Gold was to be a secluded, defensible, place to retreat and plan whatever their move is.

But whom?

You barely have the context - or time - to contemplate that. See, the thing with existing outside context of your entire life is that the things you are proud of? The things you think make you? What you believe are your qualities and good at? Well, they become your biggest source of trouble.

[Trouble] Abrasive, honest, driven

[Trouble] Empathetic, Tricky, Clever

[Trouble] Gregarious, Adaptable, Charming

[Trouble] Patient, stoic, through

[Trouble] Contemplative, Self-Aware, Insightful

I looked up both techniques and I'm not really sold on either one of them, I would go over fire only because it seems more useful as we progress

[X] [Skill] Martial Arts (Melee)
[X] [Skill] Martial Arts (Ranged)
[X] [Skill] Skullduggery
[X] [Skill] Sentiment

[X] [Skill] Courtesy

I think these are important skills for someone who is wandering the land solo. get skullduggery because what scorpion doesn't have it. Sentiment and Courtesy because it helps our interactions with the people and pretty much anybody really. And the Martial art skills because we're a warrior and why not.

@delethiel So for the student and trouble would it be
[X] [Student] Creativity, passion, or drive
-[X] Creativity
[X] [Trouble] Gregarious, Adaptable, Charming
-[X] Charming

Or
[] Creativity
[] Charming

Feel like striking as air feels more appropriate for this character.

Being praised for your creativity, your lord always turned you to the most heterodox of problems; you always seemed to be handed off the strangest of tasks and the most baffling questions. It also gave you a lot of autonomy: your superiors were unwilling - or unable - to track your plans and actions, happy to go with them as long as goals were accomplished.

Perhaps that is why sometimes it feels like nothing really changed, that you can close your eyes and forget about your fall from status. This is just another bizarre venture; others may be resigned to their fate, but you will make an opportunity of this.

The more you stand on the waves, the easier it becomes to mingle with people; at some point you forget you were just pretending. Without the veil or the apprehension of your clan, your charm oozes. You are often well-received and cause a positive first impression, rare for a wandering ronin. However, this is also why you keep getting into trouble and moving around: everyone sees themselves or wants to count you as a friend, and keeps involving you in their problems - and more often than not, you say yes. Not only that, all too often you charm the wrong person at the wrong time and draw the ire of those that trusted you…

Still, you must remember what you are trying to accomplish beyond mere survival. The Duty that you owe to Bayushi Shoju, your Clan Champion - through whatever intermediaries separate the two of you; the Desire within your heart.

What Duty our samurai is expected to pursue, despite - or perhaps because - of their fall of status? These are some examples, feel free to plan and write-in others.

[] [Duty] Infiltrate the Lion army

[] [Duty]Assist the Champion's son

[] [Duty]Find the missing Hantei princess

What Desire drives our samurai through adversity; what keeps them from losing hope and letting the waves take them? These are some examples, feel free to plan and write-in others.

[] [Desire] Find a liege worth serving

[] [Desire] Get an invitation to the Emerald Champion Test

[] [Desire] Find love

Votes will close next Monday GMT 1300

[X] [Duty]Find the missing Hantei princess
Because this option seems like it provides the most adventure and fun.
[X] [Desire] Find love
And out of all the desire one this one is the most personal I think. I could be persuaded to change if there was a better write in. But right now I'll go with this.

[X] [Duty] Infiltrate the Lion army

[X] [Duty]Assist the Champion's son

Whatever adventures the almost-hentai princess experiences, I want to be at a reasonable safe distance.

[X] [Desire] Find a liege worth serving

Seems like the most interesting of the three.

Sorely tempted to go for the Jidai Geki Romance Option, but...

[] [Duty] Infiltrate the Lion army
[] [Desire] Find a liege worth serving

If it's moral ambiguity we want, then it's moral ambiguity we'll get.

EDIT: Wait a minute... Looking this over along with what lore I've scrounged up... Screw it. Jidai Geki Romance Option it is.

[X] [Duty]Find the missing Hantei princess
[X] [Desire] Find love

Bentei get out :V:V:V
Since this is up here are you taking a slightly more romantic take on love rather than it being a curse that always betrays duty.

Also for desire, would something like being able to return to our family with pride or something work?
Stopping being a ronin/Finding a Liege, except for the sake of family rather than the sake of duty.

That's the thing. The crucial idea of Duty and Desire is that *the two always conflict with each other*. So if our Desire is "finding love", we will always be put in a) situations where we could advance or Duty or our search for love b) in a complicated situation because of wanting to find love (or our Duty, c) have to accept something that hurts our pursuit of love for a benefit.

So, there is nothing inherently for love as something that betrays duty etc- Whatever love means for our character. Making it a Desire is not a statement about the subject of desire, but about its *narrative focus*. The Desire and getting it and not getting it will be central to their story. So will the Duty.

Weirdly, our samurai may be luckier at love if that is not their Desire. After all, it will not be the thing getting them in trouble, forcing them to choose between it our Duty, or them having to hurt their love prospects to get another advantage...

Just another quirk of narrative systems.

So, anything works as a Desire: If they want it, and if their Duty is (the main) reason why they are not doing it right, it is a good Desire.

Same with Duty: if they are expected to do, if they are going to be rewarded for it and their Desire is a worthwhile distraction, it is a good Duty.

Y'know, when Duty and Desire is explained like that, I get two reads out of the Jidai Geki Romance Option: the first being we're trying to pursue the missing princess as a lover; and the second that we merely look like we're pursuing said princess in an attempt to raise our station.

Or the princess might not be our target of love at all. Could be someone else entirely really.
