In Thunder's Echo (Legend of the Five Rings Quest)

Throwing it out there, but remember those rebels that tried to put an arrow in honorable Otomo-sama? Blaming them for what happened to Kimiko (in public) will probably go over better than "Tainted! No faces! Monsters!" seeing as this is Lion country, not the Crab lands.

Maybe something about how she died fight the enemies of (insert name of nation I can't spell here)

Enamels? what do teeth have to do with anything?

Enemies of Rokugan are at this time....the Shadowlands and that's about it. The Yobanjin are quiet, and Medinat al-Salaam could not care less about a bunch of yokels who just left to go be smelly in their own country.
The Ivory Kingdoms would potentially be a factor if not for their current civil war against the Rhumal Cultists.

Still even if none of this was true, suggesting that a soulless gaijin could harm a class one badass like our former leader is spitting on her grave. It's like saying you got killed by a house cat.

[x] A non-answer in public and Yogo gives his testimony in private
-[x] "There is little I can tell you Yoritomo-sama. All that I know is at second hand from following the magistrates' investigation and that investigation is not finished. They are proceeding with great thoroughness and skill. It would be foolish of me to try and preempt the conclusions of the experts or jostle their elbows. I very much regret not knowing more."
-[x] Spend void on sincerity roll.

What can we say without offending our host sensitivity, their honor or their competence and still keep things more or less truthful?

I was thinking on something like:

"She died like she lived, as a warrior... that's what I can say on this venue, at least until the investigations are concluded."

How about something like this.

[] "Duty. She died so that the enemies of the Empire could be exposed."

It is vague enough without accusing anyone directly?

To say that she died as a warrior, fighting for her life until the very end, would be a correct answer but not the answer to the Mantis's question. In fact, some would consider this as dodging the question and therefore make way to what everyone thinks.

Remember, the Lion claimed that it was us who did it so probably is the version everyone believes (gossip spreads really fast, after all). We may have Asako Tani to validate our alibi but the issue doesn't go that way.

So... what to say here, and in a way that doesn't involve the Nothing while also saying it wasn't us? Hmm...

[X] "She died a warrior's death, fighting against those I and Yogo-san believe to be behind the rebels who brazenly attacked Otomo-dono."

I'm not entirely sure if we should go get Ketsui's karo later and get him to corroborate some of our suspicions regarding the matter of the Crane being tied Kimoko's death. In private of course.

Excellent.

Born upon a palanquin of unpainted wood

Borne, I think.

As for what we say... well, what do we wish to achieve? This will take a bit of archive-diving. Sitll, in no particular order, I see these as our pertinent goals here.
- Loyally follow the instructions of our higher-ups in the Scorpion
- Neither upset (further) nor dishonor our hostess
- Continue to sell the idea that, no, really, we weren't behind this.
- Say nice things about Bayushi Kimoko.
- Position ourselves as well as we can for future interactions in the court
- Aid in our personal quest to do horrible things to those that carried this out
- Leave our clan-mates in good positions to do the things that they are doing
- Not give our enemies any information that we do not want them to have (they can steal faces, and at least four of them got away. I can almost guarantee that they're in the audience).

For our long-term goals
- Manage to make it through Winter Court without losing all that we have gained for the Clan thus far.
- As much as we can, damage whoever did this. They have now struck down those we care about twice, and Scorpion vendetta is a thing.
- Survive, and have our clan-mates survive

As far as pertinent details...
- What has the diamyo said? We mustn't contradict that.
- What have we said? We mustn't contradict that.
- What have our superiors among the Scorpion told us to not reveal? We shouldn't reveal that, unless there is *strong* reason to believe that the situation has changed.

Not really feeling up to the archive-dive on that one right at the moment. I'll come back to it later, if no one else has.

Still, I think this is more an opportunity than a trap. It's a podium on which we can shape the narrative of this moment in the minds of the court, and we should use it as such.

*cough*

So... I have precisely one actual vote thus far, from @A Nation's Virtue. Obviously, I kind of need more than that in order to actually write an update.

Anyone else want to make a vote?

I will note that Matsu Ketsui hasn't given an official explanation yet, and while stories of you getting quasi-arrested for the crime are probably reasonably well known at this point, the Scorpion have yet to make an official statement either. So there is no fear of contradicting anyone directly here.
