In Thunder's Echo (Legend of the Five Rings Quest)

The following is present in the "investigate ourselves" vote, not the "leave it to the magistrates" one:

Leave things to the magistrates has the following:

Could you explain why you think scrutiny will be more of a problem if we leave things to the magistrates?

Sure, what I mean by that is that we will not get to act completely freely just because we are leaving things to the magistrates. We will be able to meet with other delegations and things, but will have to operate from underneath a cloud of suspicion until the matter is resolved. It will definitely be less scrutiny than having the magistrate at our elbow in an absolute sense, but I feel like trading the short term scrutiny of assisting in the investigation is worth not having all of our potential diplomatic contacts treat us like a criminal until the magistrate's investigation comes up empty - not the guaranteed result, but at least plausible.

[x] Request leave to investigate the matter alongside Kitsu Ami. You do not technically have the authority to do so, but between your situation and your lord's achievements you might be able to persuade the daimyo to permit it. This would give you options, but Ketsui would be expecting results quickly and you would be under extremely close scrutiny for any attempts at deception or misdirection.

You know, it occures to me that by doing this we are effectively cutting off our own investigative arm, namely Pale Oak. We can not use him or our spy network if we step into the light so fully. Why not let the Lion investigate and help them along from the shadows? Main advantage of going with the Lion is that we will be watched so one can take our face and commit further crimes.

That all said, how the hell did they take our face, damnit?

That makes sense, actually.

[X] Leave this to the magistrates. You would be giving up a great deal of control, but your positive relations with the local law enforcement should keep you in the loop and enable you to handle your own affairs on the side. Keeping your distance will also help shield you from any further accusations.

This way we can conduct our own investigation.

Conducting our own investigation is an option, but we'd lose out on all of Kitsu Ami's resources; since she's the local Magistrate, she has quite a few. I'd rather have to sneak around a little bit to talk to Pale Oak than sneak around a lot to investigate crime scenes. Plus, if we investigate without working together with Kitsu Ami, we'd very likely be burning bridges by implying that she isn't even competent to assist us.

They are investigating a murder.

WE are investigating that fucking shapeshifter that stole our face for his kill.

I don't actually think the crime scene is likely to turn up much that would lead us to him, and our presence on the investigation itself would taint much of the findings. Remember, the evidence found is largely irrelevant except for persuading figures of authority that we're innocent or guilty. With us directly present, there will always be the doubt of planting evidence, or otherwise altering it for our own interests, because Scorpion.

What I'd do is poke around for mysterious strangers and unusual visitors. People seen in more than one place at a time, etc. Find the culprit and teach them a Scorpion's revenge....keeping in mind we really don't want to fight the culprit either. They killed one of the most killy people in the whole town, simple consideration would point out that in such an assassination, WE are the one likely to be killed horribly.

6.9 - A request denied
As you consider your response, you make a note of how relatively polite Matsu Ketsui is being. True, her samurai had you thrown to the ground and pinned like a common criminal at first glance, but that could easily have been the result of a miscommunication. It is easy enough to see how 'the Scorpion is wanted for questioning about a murder' could be interpreted as 'the Scorpion is our chief suspect for a murder', especially when one is dealing with members of the Matsu family, who have never exactly been great fans of your family or Clan.

Hmm. The chances are you can put this down to the ties that your lord has already established with the Lion during the span of this Court, and your own reputation as a relatively honourable warrior - for a Scorpion, at least. Add to that your ties with Otomo Kairyu and the positive impression you made on the magistrates themselves and you probably have a decent option for approach here.

True, trying this might not be the most logical course of action... but if what they say is true, if someone has murdered Kimoko-sama while disguised as you, then they have declared war against the Scorpion. You will not suffer such an insult lightly.

"I see." You say calmly, not allowing yourself to pause for too long, remembering with a faint stab of regret the conversation you shared with Mariko about the Matsu family and their insistence on acting with only the most perfunctory deliberations. "In that case, Matsu-sama, I should like to request that I be permitted to investigate this matter alongside Kitsu-sama. My family are magistrates, and I believe I would be able to assist in finding those responsible for such a vile crime."

Naoto's Courtier/Awareness 7k4 = 27 (-5 for fatigue)

"Permission denied." Matsu Ketsui says flatly. "This crime was committed in my lands, and against my guest. Whoever or whatever is responsible has levied mortal insult against me and my family, and it is for us to resolve. In the face of that, you would dare imply that we might need your assistance in resolving the matter, Scorpion?"

"My apologies, Matsu-sama." You say, bowing low. "I allowed my anger at this crime against my lord to cloud my judgement. No insult was intended."

Naoto's Sincerity/Awareness 6k4 = 32 (-5 for fatigue)

For a long moment you are kept waiting in trepidation, wondering if the Daimyo's frustrations will drive her to ignore your apology.

"There is nothing to apologize for, Soshi-san." Ketsui says at last, and you breath a silent sigh of relief. "Any true samurai would be equally outraged at such a transgression. I cannot allow you to investigate alongside Kitsu-san... but you can at least view the scene and recover any appropriate property. Kitsu-san? See to it."

"Of course, Matsu-dono." The magistrate says formally. "This way please, Soshi-san."

Keeping your head bowed, you back away and follow the Shugenja out of the building, shivering slightly as the cold air envelops you once again. Kitsu Ami doesn't wait for you, instead striding away across the courtyard, forcing you to hurry to catch up.

"We have not yet removed any of the bodies, though this will need to be done soon." She says curtly as you approach the guest tower. "I will need you to show me anything you intend to remove from the scene, after which I will have my yoriki escort you to your new quarters."

"Of course, Kitsu-sama." You say as politely as you can. "If I may ask... what happened to the other inhabitants of our quarters?"

"All of the Heimin present at the time were either killed or have fled. I will require an accurate count of their numbers from you later, Soshi-san." The Kitsu explains. "As for Yogo-san..."

Where were your companions during this attack?

Pale Oak:
[ ] Was present during the attack, survived, and has since gone into hiding.
[ ] Was present during the attack, was slain, but managed to leave a useful clue behind as to the culprit.
[ ] Was absent when the attack occured, and is waiting for you at your new quarters.

Yogo Hanzo:
[ ] Was present during the attack and was incapacitated by a wound laced with poison. He is unavailable until he recovers, but may have seen who was responsible for this.
[ ] Was absent during the attack, and is waiting for you at your new quarters.

QM's note: Again, this is a meta-decision, not one Naoto has any direct say in. And yes, due to fatigue penalties you failed to convince Ketsui to let you get involved. Fortunately a decent Sincerity roll prevented her from taking offense at your temerity.

What about the ninja girl we took into our service?

...the ninja girl whose family has ties to the Lying Darkness. Well shit.

Huh. Well I think Pale Oak is too valuable to trade for a clue so the second option is out.
@Maugan Ra would you change the wording of of of the '[ ] Was absent during the attack, and is waiting for you at your new quarters.' just to make it clear which one refers to Pale Oak and which one to Yogo.

A few notes...

- If Pale Oak is dead, basically all of our work on the Heimen side falls apart, and our dealings with Commerce are crippled. That's Bad. If he's in hiding, then that's still true, but is at least only temporary (less bad). On the other hand, if we don't catch this guy, a *lot* of stuff could potentially fall through

- If Yogo Hanzo is down, then our new quarters have no soundproofing until he recovers, in addition to anything else that he might do.

- Clues for catching this guy are still... valuable.

I note a thing. I don't know how to bring it into play, or even *if* to bring it into play, but way back at the beginning, we did gift the Lion with a box full of herbs... specifically, herbs know for their properties as antidotes.

Firstly - Tinysquid! You return to us! Today is a wonderful day!

Second, yes, yes you did. The Lion are unlikely to resort to that, though, since the Kitsu family specialize in Water magic, which has most of the healing and purification spells.

@Maugan Ra : And is Wren just dead? Or is she just alive since she is not (officialy) one of our heimin? Since we do not get to choose, or would that be spoilers?

If we had at least medicine 1 we could help with the healing, but shugenja will probably do it well enough. Probably. But we might have been able to indentfy the poison and maybe who uses it.

Something to consider, if this is the Darkness, and not yet another plot, anybody who was present during the attack might be compromised. We need to get our hands on some Jade pronto.

Also, I am not sure what exaclly Pale Oak could have seen that would be usefull. As far as he knows, it was us, since it had our face. If he ran, good luck trying to find him and bring him back. Expetially as we never told him that we were hunting taint and such. If he did run and hide, he thinks we did it. He might just join the rebels for it, you know, the darkness tainted ones? That would be un-fun.

I have the absolute worst suspicion right now that Hanzo has gained Shadow points.
