In Thunder's Echo (Legend of the Five Rings Quest)

Currently, the winning vote seems to be taking the Honour re-roll and using a Void point to augment it.

I'm going to give this an hour just in case anyone wants to point out an alternative option, then I'll roll for that and put up a mini-update for the results. Whether Naoto controls his fear is a pretty important factor in what happens next, after all.

Then I'll open the vote back up for people to decide what their response is.

[X] Yes, re-roll with Honor
- [X] Void point

It is a big issue if we fail, but I rather suspect we will have far more immediate concerns if we remain terrified.

Why do we have honor if not for this stuff? We're a scorpion.
I feel it's kinda cheap though. Maugan Ra took back the roll because he thought the first hour might not be representative. I think we're still only divided on whether to use void/ raises.
[X] Yes, re-roll with Honor
- [X] Void point
-[X] I can deal with the failed re roll.

6.2.1 - Facing your fears
You have been scared before, frightened of pain or failure, but this is something else entirely. As you watch the bloodstained figure of Doji Mariko lurch towards you, only now do you understand what fear truly is.

You feel... cold. As though hands of ice are wrapped around your heart, stealing all of your warmth and life, robbing you of strength and conviction. Your hands are shaking, your limbs turned to water, your breath harsh in your lungs as everything you know tells you to run, now...

Desperately you try to recall your training, thinking back to all the stories of your youth, reminding yourself that your ancestors are watching, that your lord is counting on you - anything and everything that you can imagine is called up in a desperate attempt to control the icy fear in your heart.

Honour re-roll, spending Void Point.
6k6 against TN 25 = 20. Failed.

And none of it matters in the slightest.

You are not a hero. You are not a Thunder, blessed by the Fortunes to stand against the darkness and hold your ground. You are a mortal man, bereft of any of the training or experience necessary to face something like this, and you are afraid.

"Naoto..." Mariko says, her voice disorted by the horrible wound in her throat. "Come with me, Naoto. Join me... join us..."

What do you do?
[ ] Take Tani and run. You can't fight this, whatever it is, and you can't allow the Phoenix to die here as well.
[ ] Charge. You are terrified, but you will not let this stand. Though your limbs are shaking and your heart thundering in your chest, you will fight.
[ ] Try to talk to Mariko. If she remembers your name, maybe there's enough left there to reason with?
[ ] Write in.

I use an online dice roller for a lot of stuff, and in this case it rolled: 4, 1, 8, 3, 1, 3.

Naoto remains terrified, though he managed to avoid failing badly enough to actually be forced into fleeing. According to @primemountain, the chance of this outcome was about 11%.

Naoto loses ten points of Honour, dropping him down to 4.7.

God, this was sudden. It's a bit of a cascade, isn't it. We're dropped quite a bit of honor recently, and I do know that things can fall apart even faster if we get into a fight. So let's run away.

I mean sudden in the 'things were going well, now we could possibly die and are now dishonorable scum.'

[X] Try to talk to Mariko. If she remembers your name, maybe there's enough left there to reason with?
We can't run so our options are talk and fight. The crab lover in me wants to hit it till it dies but thats a poor option when it won't work. So let's be a scorpion and talk out way out of trouble.

JFC dice please.

-[X] If appliceable, spend a void point.

If this is some sort of trick, I don't think we have a high chance of getting away from here, and if it isn't, I want to at least try to talk to Mariko.

I'm leaning towards "Talk".

Mostly because running away...we're on unfamiliar ground, and this thing can (apparently) teleport. That just means we end up dying tired.

Fight...it's a spirit, we have no anti-spirit weapons or techniques, and my understanding of L5R ghosts is that unlike DnD or Pathfinder you can't just smack them with a sword until they're laid to rest. Plus fighting with that terror penalty...not good.

So by process of elimination that leaves "Talk".

To the vengeful spirit of Naoto's ex.

I'm not saying it's a good plan, but compared to all the other plans...

I don't suppose the fact that you add Honor to resist Fear would apply to an Honor Roll, would it? No... I suppose it wouldn't. That sounds a bit too much like stacking Honor on top of itself, and that would just be too cheesy. After all, it's already a chance to re-roll with typically better dice.

[X] Charge. You are terrified, but you will not let this stand. Though your limbs are shaking and your heart thundering in your chest, you will fight.

LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEROOOOOOOOOOOY JEEENKIIIINS !!!
In the worst case, we will be reunited with hot chick.

That is so harsh. Failing TN 25 on 5k5, and then 6k6? About a 1 in 20 chance! The dice gods giveth, and they taketh away...

[X] Try to talk to Mariko. If she remembers your name, maybe there's enough left there to reason with?

Yup. We have had plenty of great dice rolls, and some not so great ones. This would be one of them. A 6k6 rolling 20 or below is 3%. Dice will be dice. It is a bit ironic that we were exaclly one raise away from passing though. Seems the dice gods heard me call them mischivous.

Actually it was 3 in a 1000 chance. Somebody wants us going with her.

-[X] Also, stay away. And keep Tani away. We do not want this thing to eat us or her.
-[X] @Maugan Ra: Have a free raise. Because this is way to creepy to allow to continue.

Because @Wade Garrett made some intresting points. That said, I'd rather run away from something that moves in "lurches" then let it actually get to me. Even if the terrain is unfamiliar. Keep that shambeling thing away from us. Main problem with the addition? Paying any attention to Tani might make her jelous.

I don't think it is Mariko, as the creature was laughing before appearing to us.

I think it is some sort of trickster.

[X] Potential write-in:

You freeze. Dread snakes up your legs and leaves them weak and shaking, your heart beating like a drum in the center of your chest. For a brief second, you try to resist, relying on all of your training and Honor as a Samurai. You are one who follows the Code of Bushido! Your strength is not only yours, but that of a hundred ancestors!

And then the doubt creeps in. Didn't you betray that honor by lying to Daidoji Chen? By lying to him about Mariko, failing to give her defender the tools that he needed to avenge her?

And with that doubt, reason shatters.

"Mariko! No! Please! Please... I can't, oh kami, I can't join you!" you stammer uncontrollably, "How can I avenge you if I join you in Meido? How can I - you must believe me, I will, I'll find the truth, Mariko, please!"
