Holding Out For A Hero: An Original Superhero Quest

Omake - Everyday Hero

Sitting in the car alone was a remarkable test of mental fortitude for a Hartford Police Office. Villains were actively engaging and resisting arrests more often then usual these days after the assassination of the last Chief of Police. The papers and local media report anxiety to a population that is more terrified than ever of reporting a crime while criminals are emboldened to try larger and larger stunts. As a servant of the public it becomes your duty to step up to the task of ensuring safety and pursuing criminals.

A duty that recently divided the woman I loved as she asked me to go back to school for something different. Leaving in the morning was not easy as she just looked at me and kept asking me to stay a little while more. The thought of 'I didn't sign up for this' sneaks into mind but I refuse to not smile to her or the public. I am Marcos Leon and I will always oppose criminals. Super or not be it armed with a shotgun or a paper and pen. That's simply how I am.

Sometimes I feel like I can only convince myself of that.

---------

END

I wanted to bring in an outside perspective of a Police officer in Hartford. In my mind the police are demotivated and heavily overworked as they deal with a City who's villain population keeps coming back from the dead as well as losing people important to them like the Chief. Its hard out for a police officer who's 'power' amounts to a small vest and a sidearm that can rarely get through villains armor.

Have you been looking at my worldbuilding notes? :p

But in all seriousness, being a cop is something of a thankless job. You bust your ass all day, being the first responders to shit like woman who can pull a minigun out her ass, the literal one man army being lead by evil iron man, where there's a chance that even the average street thug can take a bullet and keep going. It's lead to an undermanned police force as people don't want to sign up. And those that do sign up are forced into the streets with relatively little training. And at the end of the day, the capes get the glory. In the next day's paper, it's going to talk about Sunspot and The Vigil, who is a criminal in the eyes of some cops, stopped this gun smuggling operation. Not the police.

Yeah, after this, and Blankenship dying, and his killer getting killed by a Cape, morale isn't very high in the HCPD.

Well, I meant to only asked for one, but since they both passed...

Now let's see if Adrian has that same luck.

And he does!

I'll finish rolling for Sunspot and Artillery tomorrow, when I finish up their character sheets.

Polioce Acadamies do exist. But they are "encouraged" to get as many bodies through them as fast as possible.

You wouldn't believe how many people try to become policemen because it means earning a fixed salary without a university degree. Around here they posted an Ad wanting policewomen due to gender equality and so on. They wanted around 500 women, they got over 5000 wanting to take the job.

If the economy is in trouble due to super powered people duking it out, there is literally more people lining to become part of the police force that they can actually use.

When you have so many people wanting the same job, is easy to weed out the ones that wouldn't be very good at it.

Counterpoint: If a police officer tries to arrest someone and they resist arrest by throwing a fireball at the police officers who may not have even drawn weapons - and if they do draw weapons, the criminal is capable of either simply shrugging off the bullets or blocking them with magic... And there's only what, was it THREE heroes in the city (this one specifically)? Compared to untold numbers of powered criminals, and who-knows how many vigilantes...

The life expectancy of a police officer in this sort of universe is likely way lower than in real life. I mean how many cops died for the scientist to get her shot in against the chief? And they were just collateral damage of a planned and targeted strike. Imagine if the cops had breached the hideout the MC had chased her out of first? The entire SWAT team would've been toast.

The business to be in for reliable work and pay? Construction. All aspects, from carpentry to masonry to electrical work. The amount of damage done by super-fights would mean construction companies would be hiring people left and right just to keep up with the demand for repairs.

Six technically. But two of them, Jetstream and Starhammer, are often called to other cities to deal with speedsters/especially strong threats.

And of the remaining four, Temple had only recently joined and doesn't have much experience, and Saber is still recovering from the gas attack.

That leaves Corporal Steel and Sunspot as experienced heroes that are reliably in the city.

There's a reason that Powered people are bombarded with emails to join law enforcement.

Napalm Grenades Part 2
You silently thank your good fortune that there are more than a few dark corners that you can change into as you speed downhill in full armor. The tail lights of other cars and of the streetlights blur together as you pick up speed.

At the bottom of the hill is a 4 way intersection. You speed through the light, nearly getting sideswiped by another car as you pull left. You can almost feel your armor scraping on the concrete as you speed up the hill.

It's soon that you get back on level ground. You ignore the familiar churches that line the left side of the road and the empty lots of land on the right as you look straight ahead, to your nrighborhood, and past it to the lights of the shopping center. And the giant plume of smoke coming from it.

You hope you aren't too late as you punch your throttle harder.

----------------------------------------------

Artillery holds out her arm and summons an energy shield in her left hand just in time to block a fireball from Sunspot. She dismissed the shield and summoned a pair of pistols, sprinting across the street, firing at Sunspot. Sunspot flew around, bobing and weaving avoiding the gunfire until a bullet hit him in the chest with the armor woven into his suit taking most of the blow.

"Gha, you never get used to that" He muttered as he summoned a fireball and let it fly. The fireball caught the sign for a bus stop and it burst into flames.

Artillery started sprinting away, and as she did, a pair of boots with formed around her feet, and she jumped. She soared in the air and landed on top of the roof an a whole foods store, as she landed, she summoned another weapon, this one 3/4ths as large as she was. As Sunspot flew towards her, he stopped as he saw that she was holding a minigun.

Sunspot's eyes widened as he saw the gun. "Now that's just cheating!" He shouted, half joking. He had enough time to fly upwards as the minigun spun up before Artillery unleashed a rain of bullets. As Sunspot shot up, he was engulfed in an aura of flame until he was just a fireball. Artillary shifted the gun upwards as it kept spinning before he spat out a wave of bullets. As it did, the fireball in the air split in two. Then those two split into two each, and again and again and again.

The fireballs started flying in each and every direction. Artillery shifted the gun, trying to cut Sunspot in half. But the bullets would merely pass through the empty balls of fire. She started firing at the flames dancing around her, fully intent on shooting Sunspot into chunks. This went on for several seconds. The minigun's barrels are starting to glow red from the heat.

That was until an unseen fireball hit her feet and set her alight.

She couldn't activate her shield in time this time. Her armor was caught alight as the ammunition in the minigun started cook off, the heat igniting the gunpowder. Artillery dropped the now, useless gun as the ammunition was still exploding. She jumped from the roof, armor still burning and summoned an automatic shotgun. She turned around and fired blindly at the Hero.

As she ran, she shot a nearby fire hydrant, the metal object breaking apart unleashing a torrent of water. Artillery jumped through the geyser, putting out the flames, and sprinted through the nearby neighborhood.

-------------------------------------------

You speed forward, passing the Social Security office and getting to the wood fence surrounding your neighborhood. You look forward, and see flashing lights, and you think, an overturned semi. A line of cars are heading the way you came from, some of them you recognize as your neighbors.

Near the tail end of the line, you see a familiar sedan. You're going fast, but you activate your Super speed. Doing so when you aren't running always feels strange. Like your body wants to, needs to do something, but you aren't doing it.

But you're able to see clearly your husband's face, he's looking at you as you pass. His face is covered in worry, but honestly, you can't blame him. In the back seat, you see Gwen, face against the window, mouth agape as she sees the motorcycle riding knight. Her face is caught between glee and fear.

You give a wave before you turn off your super speed and keep going, passing even more cars fleeing your neighborhood when you hear a second explosion. This one closer than before.

You do some mental calculations as to where they are. They're closer than the Bullseye, the new burger place, and from how close that explosion sounded...

They're inside your neighborhood.

You turn your motorcycle to the side, hop the curb, and summon a barrier and plow through your neighbor's fence. You hear the Miller's dog barking like crazy as you blow through another fence. Your wheels skip across the cul-de-sac like a stone across the water as you speed across the street. You crash through another pair of fences and start speeding down the street. By now, you can hear fighting. Gunfire, explosions ring out as you drive closer.

As you make a turn, that's when you see them. This street always had people parking in the road in front of their houses, even when they have driveways and, in the case of the ones on your right, garages in the back. Before, it just made driving through here annoying if you wanted to avoid scratching someone's car. But now, several vehicles are covered in bullet holes, one is on it's side and on fire in front of someone's house.

Sunspot fighting someone in red armor. Sunspot is launching a gout of fire at the woman, who summons a gauntlet that projects an energy shield. Then, she summons a pair of boots to try to jump away, firing at Sunspot with a gun that appeared out of thin air. You take a second to notice that whenever Sunspot shoots out flames, they always maneuver away from the trees or flicker out whenever they are about to light someone's house or car.

But the woman is taking no such care. While she's sprinting west, she's firing wildly at Sunspot. Even as he's trying to stay above the nearby houses, chunks of brickwork gets blasted off. Occasionally, bullets go through a window.

You don't know if Sunspot notices this or not, but he suddenly stops trying to launch fireballs at her and starts to try to get some distance between the two of them. But before the woman can make a break for it,

The woman summons a large rifle to aim at you.

- (Optional) [] That armor looks familar. Maybe you saw it before... (Roll IQ for more information on the armored woman)

[X] Reflective Barrier, then rushdown and get to melee range for grappling.

Hrrm....Reflective Barrier is tempting, but I'm leaning towards a standard barrier in case Artilery gets clever and aims for our tires or something else that'd throw the timing off.
[X]Cast a Barrier as you close in-if you can just get into melee range of her...

I believe are supposed to wait for a option to win the vote before rolling for it.

Looks like we have a winner, so I'm going to need a few rolls

The first is the IQ roll recognize her armor.

Second is a Mystic Arts to reflect.

The third is a Brawl roll to try and hold her down.

Suppose brawl is up to me.

Good enough. Not great.

Looks like we've got some great rolls here. A stunning success for both Perception and Magery, with a good success on Brawl. Now, let's hope that Artillery doesn't have the same luck on her side.

Edit: Looks like she isn't going down without a fight.

Roll either a dodge or another Mystic Arts roll to summon another barrier
