Hell is other angels

Keep in mind that Taziel is apparently as new to the Buffyverse as Hiver. There is only one thing, or rather one person, that she could possibly own.
She seems to know a fair bit about the locations and natures of creatures and artifacts. Also, I'm pretty sure the comment was meant to be a joke on her part.

Lolnope. Taz said Anduriel kicked her across to this branch of the omniverse some centuries back. Likely as a thank you for trying to shank him in the face in the ongoing feud they have.

We going to get some more backstory on that, @Hiver?

In all the talk about affecting senses, was it established whether Fallen can go full Cartesian Demon?

(Predictive keyboard suggests Cartesian Demon hunter)

A.K.A. Evil demon, evil genius, malicious demon, genius malignus, and deus deceptor.
TL;DR is a being that can create a complete/almost complete simulation of reality for the sake of deceiving its target. Basically the trick Lash pulled with Sheila Starr except with the entire world instead of a single person.
It's theoretically possible but illogical and inefficient to do,
The Fallen would gain nothing from doing it.
Their goals are generally much broader than deceiving a single person.

I racked the shotgun's slide and it made a very satisfying 'clack clack.' I nodded and put it down, having finally finished cleaning it. Not my sawn-off, but rather a twelve gauge pump action that I had picked up somewhere along the way. Normally I didn't use the twelve gauge. It's too bulky to carry in most places. Even with the manually shortened barrel it was too damn long to easily conceal and the few times I'd used it it had always been more trouble than it was worth. But if I was going to be heading into the category five shitstorm that I was pretty sure was engulfing Sunnydale then I was going to need something with a bit more kick.

I don't care how tough you are, a twelve gauge slug is hell of a lot of bullet. And unless whatever I was aiming at was just straight up invulnerable I was almost guaranteed to do at least some damage.

With the shotgun cleaned, I packed it back into its carrying case before starting on my pistol. A quick glance across the cabin showed me the somewhat surreal sight of demon and demon slayer normally speaking. Aiko and Lazarus had meet obviously, but that had basically just been a very quick round of introductions, followed by telling the slayer to fuck off, followed by us leaving as quickly as we had come.

Now they had been talking for most of the flight.

I'm honestly not sure if I should be afraid or not but, I know enough to stay out of it. Laz wasn't my ex or anything, but she was my best friend. I don't really know what to call my relationship with Aiko. Girlfriend maybe? Something like that.

It'd be nice if they got along.

Looking back down, I disassembled my pistol with quick, competent, movements. It's funny how it's the little things you notice. The Doomslayer had already known how to do this. If not with this particular model of gun. But even then all it took was taking it apart once and it was like I'd been doing it all my life. Of course a literal lifetime of being, around, firing, and just generally using guns had given him, and me, an extraordinary aptitude with firearms of all kinds. As well as weapons that were perhaps, less than completely legal.

The tip of my boot tapped the side of the box of grenades, and other party favors, that I had stowed beneath the work bench.

We were going to Sunnydale. I had a feeling they would be needed, especially if some maniac was trying to wake up Acathla.

… Sunnydale.

Bloody hell. My last visit was fun... not. I can't help but wonder what will go wrong this time. It'd be impressive if I managed to outdo my last visit. Fallen angels, broken prophecies, and angry gods. It was actually kind of impressive when viewed in the right light.... oh and me possibly ending the world. Can't forget about that.

I could only hope I wouldn't break things even worse this time.

"I'm not sure things can get any worse than end of the world." Taziel said, sitting on the edge of the table, her legs crossed.

Point.

Well, as long as we stop that, things should be fine.

"Or at the very least not worse." Taziel said and sighed, her upper wings wrapping around her almost like a cloak as she folded her other wings on her back, "It's a shame that we don't have time to teach you more sorcery. Even if you would have been a one trick pony, it would still have had quite the utility."

I frowned to myself and finished oiling everything, drying off the excess. One trick pony? Magic is magic... if you can do one spell, shouldn't you be able to do them all?

The Fallen nodded, "In theory, but not in practice. Your pool of magical talent is so small as to be almost worthless. To get anything truly useful out of it, we would need to find something that aligns perfectly with your talents. For example if it's fire you could likely become almost as skilled as a true wizard at it, but only with that element."

Hmm.

I started to put the gun back together.

How would we even find that out? I was fairly sure it wasn't fire or Spike would have gone up a lot faster.

Taz raised an eyebrow at me, "By sampling as many areas of magic as we could. And then practicing a great deal until you reach competence in what you are best at. Just because you end up talented in it doesn't mean you would be an instant prodigy, my host. Just one of the reasons we don't have time to do it."

Nothing is ever easy, is it? Any ideas of what it could be?

She drummed her fingers on the table, "I am unsure. It is not the use of fire as you have yourself deduced. Blood magic perhaps? You did fairly well with that, by your standards anyway.... of course using your own blood as a medium is always less difficult than using another so we can't be sure. You did learn to control the wings easily enough even if I had to assist in the beginning, so shape shifting is another possibility. Geomancy as well if only because those who share your stubbornness quite often align with the movements of the Earth."

But not always.

"But not always." She agreed, "For all we know, you could very well turn out to be especially skilled at talking to plants. Until we have time for you to keep trying different kinds of magic until we find something you are good at, we don't know."

Oh well. I'll just have to cast fist then. Likely more reliable anyway.

"Indeed, My Host."

Finishing putting the gun back together, I was startled when a white fox jumped into my lap promptly curled up. I couldn't help but smile, "Am I ignoring you?"

Aiko looked up at me and pushed her head under my palm. Well, can't be much clearer than that. I scratched behind her ears and she just kinda melted.

"Got anything for me?" Lazarus asked as she moved to sit down across the table from me.

"I can scratch yours ears too if you want?" I said with a grin that widened as she rolled her eyes, "Actually, yeah. I cleaned your guns also but I haven't done the blades yet. Think you could handle that for me?"

Laz nodded, "Sure. No problem." and leaned down to grab the bag we used to carry the blades, "It was nice meeting Aiko." She said, watching the puddle of fox spirit in my lap, frowning faintly.

"But you aren't sure she can be trusted." I said, causing Laz to look at me in surprise. I smiled at her, "No worries, she won't take offense. But you've read the same books I have, her kind are almost never malicious or evil."

"It's just strange." Laz said and sighed as the fox spirit cocked it's head at her, "Sorry, Aiko, but it is. You aren't human... and most things that aren't human have always done their best to eat my face. So no offense, but I'm not really comfortable turning my back to you." As we spoke she pulled one of the big machetes from the interior of the bag and started running a whetstone down the edge.

The fox was suddenly replaced by a woman sitting side ways across my lap. Aiko smiled at Lazarus, "Noted. And I'm not offended, you don't know me. Saint here does though. He trusts me enough to sleep next to me.."

I tickled her side, "Maybe I shouldn't. You keep trying to eat me."

"I'm just tasting!"

I continued to tickle her and she giggled while Laz sharpened knives and machetes with a rather content smile on her face. She might deny it but I think she missed having a team around.

We were interrupted by the pilot announcing that we would be landing in ten minutes.

Sunnydale.

Nothing good will come of this.

You know I have a fear that before this fiasco is done Hive will be
swallowed into hell (which may have been part of the PTB's plan,)
I really hope I am wrong.

Their goals are generally much broader than deceiving a single person.

Their goals are largely bottlenecked by getting a single person to agree to use their power. There's no sign that messing with senses is expensive, and how is it illogical to show somebody a scene that will make somebody more likely to cooperate (unless it's forbidden).

Just asking the host to kill somebody probably won't get you as far as offering some hellfire to support your host's vengeance against somebody they saw killing their family.
Don't you see how a complete deception could help? Hiver wouldn't agree to hit sunnyvale with hugely destructive magic, but what if the town was already razed to the ground by an army of demons pouring out of the hellmouth? Or, closer to the story, claiming to be good yourself doesn't go so far, but when they run into a benevolent god unconcerned about little taziel, it's a lot more convincing.

So, is it allowed?

I feel like this is going to become the Hell Chapter.

Not because of Hiver's bad luck - though that will play a part - but simply because of the Doom Marine's intrinsic destiny :p

Except that that would warrant an immediate Uriel interrupt.

If that were indeed their only hard limitations, then yes they could do that.
However that kind of shenanigans gets a big no no from the not-so-fallen-Angels.

Uriel's counter to what was whispered in Harry's ear in Changes came months later. I would not assume that the shackles Uriel and his comrades work in come off until after the deception has happened.

"Welcome to Sunnyhell." Lazarus said from the backseat of the rental car as she read the sign at the edge of town. Somebody had defaced the sign by scratching out 'dale' and written 'hell' below it, "charming."

"Accurate." Aiko commented from the passenger seat, "It is the site of the Hellmouth after all."

I drummed my fingers on the wheel in time with the music from the radio and pressed down on the gas pedal a bit harder. I couldn't help but be nervous about the entire thing, a consequence of previous experiences in Sunnydale but I was also much better prepared this time.

"Indeed, my host." Taziel said into my left ear, "And you have allies now. Allies with weapons and skills of their own, and connections to boot. But there are still complications."

Yeah. Like the Slayer that might try to shank me with a wooden stake on sight... Hmmm. Maybe I shouldn't bring my guns. After all Slayers are already volatile. The addition of a loaded firearm to the situation was unlikely to have a positive effect.

"Even so, a gun, big or small, is likely to act as enough deterrent to keep them from serious action until they are willing to talk." The phantom sensation of a dainty hand settled on my shoulder., "But even unarmed, I think we could handle a slayer if it was truly necessary. They are strong and fast, but so are you. Additionally you are quite skilled in the arts martial. Thousands of hours of battle with the foulest of demons distilled into a single being have resulted in a level of skill that is decidedly unnatural. With the integration of the Doomslayer memories you are by far a more dangerous opponent than any slayer that has ever lived. And even that discounts the healing that I can work upon you when the coin is in your possession. Should you decide it then the Slayer would fall before you.

Perhaps but I didn't want to kill her. If I did I would just shoot her. Easier, faster and way less risk. But that would pretty much be counter to the whole point of this exercise. We're the good guys, Taziel. Sorta. We don't go around shooting people.

"Unless they really need it."

Unless they really need it.

"So where to first?" Lazarus asked as she leaned forward into the front, "Hotel?"

I shook my head, marshaling my thoughts, "No. Okay here's the deal. We're in town to shut down Acathla and end whoever's trying wake him up. That's priority one. Priority two is the Mayor. I've got it on pretty good authority that he's a warlock. A very strong and very old warlock. Supposedly he's planning to ascend to demonhood sometime in the next year. But that's not what the problem is. The moment he learns that we're in town he's going to try to interfere. That means that he needs to be removed."

Aiko frowned, "The mayor? Are you certain?"

"Yep. The man founded this town on the Hellmouth to attract demons a hundred years ago. He made it an easy place for them to live and built it into a base of power for his ascension." I explained before I shrugged, "Which is rather sad in retrospect cause from what I can tell he's actually been a pretty good Mayor.."

Lazarus nodded before, "So... slash and burn? Hit the town hard, plug the mayor full of holes and then hunt down and end whoever it is that's trying to end the world?"

"Not quite." I said, "But pretty close. we're gonna hit up the Slayer and her team first to let them know we're in town. I'm not terribly interested in meeting the Slayer again but I'm even less interested in stumbling over each other. So we're going to head to their base of operations and do the introductions."

Ideally keeping the Slayer from stabbing me in the process.

"There is a bit of a complication though." I continued, "Last time I was in town... well... remember how I said I killed Angelus?" I said, glancing at Lazarus quickly and she nodded.

Aiko tilted her head, "Angelus? The vampire?"

"That's the one." I confirmed with a nod, "Long story short, he'd been cursed with a soul and was on the side of good. And he was the Slayer's boyfriend."

Considering the woman I willingly slept with I might not really have any ground to stand on with regards to that but still. Creepy.

"Buffy the vampire layer?" Lazarus said with a grin.

I couldn't quite suppress a snort at that, "Just don't say it to her face. Anyway, he'd lost his soul, reverted back to being the scourge of europe, and was about to help power up a demon capable of burning humanity off the face of the planet. Which is when I,good samaritan that I am, fired a stolen anti tank rocket at the two of them. Angelus took a spray of superheated metal right through the face. Right in front of the slayer." I continued with a small grimace, "I am afraid that she might be a bit... I don't know, but she might be stab happy when she see me. Add the fact that I had to skip town before I could talk to her and explain..."

"Oh."

"Yeah. I want to check in with them first just to try to keep mixups at a minimum." I explained with a sigh as I navigated along the streets towards the destination, "Get it out of the way as quickly as possible so we can get back onto the job."

I pulled up to the curb and shifted into park before looking to the side, "Welcome to hell."

Lazarus looked out the window before she frowned, "...That's a highschool."

"Like I said. Welcome to hell. Where else would you put the Hellmouth."

Aiko frowned out the window and crossed her arms, "So how do we do this?"

"We don't. I do." I said and got out, "There's a motel at west side of town. It's got a good defensive position and there are crucifixes in every room. Plus the manager doesn't ask questions.. I'll meet you there tonight. Motel Bright Rose I think it is. I've stayed there before. Get a room for the three of us and then get the gear ready. I'll go say hi to the locals."

"You sure you don't want help?" Laz asked and got out of the car and moved to the drivers door.

I nodded, "I want to try to relax things as much as I can. Less people is good."

She frowned at me and then nodded, "Be careful." she said before getting into the car. I looked after them as the car drove off, feeling the weight of the pistol in my pocket.

As the car turned the corner and out of sight, I shook my head and walked into the school. the hairs on the back of my neck stood up as I crossed the threshold... Fuck me. Is it the Hellmouth that's doing this or is the highschool just that bad?

"A bit of both, My Host." Taziel shrugged as she faded into being next to me, matching my pace. "It's mostly psychosomatic on your part, but your magic has developed enough, and the flow is strong enough, that even you can sense the energies leaking from the gateway below. It also reacts with the hellfire that's circulating in your soul.

I nodded as I made my way through the school. It may have been the middle of the day but the last thing I needed was to run into a kid roaming the halls or, gods forbid, Snyder.

Fortunately I made to the library without seeing anyone, and vice versa. Looking in through the round windows it didn't take long to see that Giles was sitting at his desk alone, looking through an old book. No Slayer... Excellent.

With one last quick check to ensure that my various tools were in place I pushed the door open and walked inside.

"You are Mister Giles yes? I believe we have much to discuss."
