I racked the shotgun's slide and it made a very satisfying 'clack clack.' I nodded and put it down, having finally finished cleaning it. Not my sawn-off, but rather a twelve gauge pump action that I had picked up somewhere along the way. Normally I didn't use the twelve gauge. It's too bulky to carry in most places. Even with the manually shortened barrel it was too damn long to easily conceal and the few times I'd used it it had always been more trouble than it was worth. But if I was going to be heading into the category five shitstorm that I was pretty sure was engulfing Sunnydale then I was going to need something with a bit more kick.
I don't care how tough you are, a twelve gauge slug is hell of a lot of bullet. And unless whatever I was aiming at was just straight up invulnerable I was almost guaranteed to do at least some damage.
With the shotgun cleaned, I packed it back into its carrying case before starting on my pistol. A quick glance across the cabin showed me the somewhat surreal sight of demon and demon slayer normally speaking. Aiko and Lazarus had meet obviously, but that had basically just been a very quick round of introductions, followed by telling the slayer to fuck off, followed by us leaving as quickly as we had come.
Now they had been talking for most of the flight.
I'm honestly not sure if I should be afraid or not but, I know enough to stay out of it. Laz wasn't my ex or anything, but she was my best friend. I don't really know what to call my relationship with Aiko. Girlfriend maybe? Something like that.
It'd be nice if they got along.
Looking back down, I disassembled my pistol with quick, competent, movements. It's funny how it's the little things you notice. The Doomslayer had already known how to do this. If not with this particular model of gun. But even then all it took was taking it apart once and it was like I'd been doing it all my life. Of course a literal lifetime of being, around, firing, and just generally using guns had given him, and me, an extraordinary aptitude with firearms of all kinds. As well as weapons that were perhaps, less than completely legal.
The tip of my boot tapped the side of the box of grenades, and other party favors, that I had stowed beneath the work bench.
We were going to Sunnydale. I had a feeling they would be needed, especially if some maniac was trying to wake up Acathla.
… Sunnydale.
Bloody hell. My last visit was fun... not. I can't help but wonder what will go wrong this time. It'd be impressive if I managed to outdo my last visit. Fallen angels, broken prophecies, and angry gods. It was actually kind of impressive when viewed in the right light.... oh and me possibly ending the world. Can't forget about that.
I could only hope I wouldn't break things even worse this time.
"I'm not sure things can get any worse than end of the world." Taziel said, sitting on the edge of the table, her legs crossed.
Point.
Well, as long as we stop that, things should be fine.
"Or at the very least not worse." Taziel said and sighed, her upper wings wrapping around her almost like a cloak as she folded her other wings on her back, "It's a shame that we don't have time to teach you more sorcery. Even if you would have been a one trick pony, it would still have had quite the utility."
I frowned to myself and finished oiling everything, drying off the excess. One trick pony? Magic is magic... if you can do one spell, shouldn't you be able to do them all?
The Fallen nodded, "In theory, but not in practice. Your pool of magical talent is so small as to be almost worthless. To get anything truly useful out of it, we would need to find something that aligns perfectly with your talents. For example if it's fire you could likely become almost as skilled as a true wizard at it, but only with that element."
Hmm.
I started to put the gun back together.
How would we even find that out? I was fairly sure it wasn't fire or Spike would have gone up a lot faster.
Taz raised an eyebrow at me, "By sampling as many areas of magic as we could. And then practicing a great deal until you reach competence in what you are best at. Just because you end up talented in it doesn't mean you would be an instant prodigy, my host. Just one of the reasons we don't have time to do it."
Nothing is ever easy, is it? Any ideas of what it could be?
She drummed her fingers on the table, "I am unsure. It is not the use of fire as you have yourself deduced. Blood magic perhaps? You did fairly well with that, by your standards anyway.... of course using your own blood as a medium is always less difficult than using another so we can't be sure. You did learn to control the wings easily enough even if I had to assist in the beginning, so shape shifting is another possibility. Geomancy as well if only because those who share your stubbornness quite often align with the movements of the Earth."
But not always.
"But not always." She agreed, "For all we know, you could very well turn out to be especially skilled at talking to plants. Until we have time for you to keep trying different kinds of magic until we find something you are good at, we don't know."
Oh well. I'll just have to cast fist then. Likely more reliable anyway.
"Indeed, My Host."
Finishing putting the gun back together, I was startled when a white fox jumped into my lap promptly curled up. I couldn't help but smile, "Am I ignoring you?"
Aiko looked up at me and pushed her head under my palm. Well, can't be much clearer than that. I scratched behind her ears and she just kinda melted.
"Got anything for me?" Lazarus asked as she moved to sit down across the table from me.
"I can scratch yours ears too if you want?" I said with a grin that widened as she rolled her eyes, "Actually, yeah. I cleaned your guns also but I haven't done the blades yet. Think you could handle that for me?"
Laz nodded, "Sure. No problem." and leaned down to grab the bag we used to carry the blades, "It was nice meeting Aiko." She said, watching the puddle of fox spirit in my lap, frowning faintly.
"But you aren't sure she can be trusted." I said, causing Laz to look at me in surprise. I smiled at her, "No worries, she won't take offense. But you've read the same books I have, her kind are almost never malicious or evil."
"It's just strange." Laz said and sighed as the fox spirit cocked it's head at her, "Sorry, Aiko, but it is. You aren't human... and most things that aren't human have always done their best to eat my face. So no offense, but I'm not really comfortable turning my back to you." As we spoke she pulled one of the big machetes from the interior of the bag and started running a whetstone down the edge.
The fox was suddenly replaced by a woman sitting side ways across my lap. Aiko smiled at Lazarus, "Noted. And I'm not offended, you don't know me. Saint here does though. He trusts me enough to sleep next to me.."
I tickled her side, "Maybe I shouldn't. You keep trying to eat me."
"I'm just tasting!"
I continued to tickle her and she giggled while Laz sharpened knives and machetes with a rather content smile on her face. She might deny it but I think she missed having a team around.
We were interrupted by the pilot announcing that we would be landing in ten minutes.
Sunnydale.
Nothing good will come of this.
