Turn 31 (216-220.M42): Husks of Javerè Pt. 4
Just Shoot Him
--Collect a strike force of elite veterans to launch an assassination attack at the Lord of Change--with Joyeuse included, it becomes a terrible treat that he must respond to with all force. Have them be in the midst of a general advance, to push past his honor guard and other units
--When the time comes for battle, have him be shot in the fucking face by our new Legendary Ballistic Skill Sniper from a great distance, because he was too focused on the threat that would almost definitely kill him.
--If that fails, he may still be disoriented enough to be brought down by our elite force, especially if he's on the shoals of the blank field
Alert: Sanguinary Priest Not Present! Gene-Seed Recovery TN is at 10!

This war has gone far and above what they expected, Captain Jantorus muses, while Thunderhawks scream overhead on fire missions and furious dogfights against the Screamers above. They came on the assumption that there was a massed cultist movement, simply waiting to be unearthed. They expected daemons, certainly. Perhaps even Traitor Marines, for the Traitor Legions often back such efforts before the inevitable betrayal.

A full daemonic incursion? He had daydreams, certainly. A wish to prove himself as Lord Asterion did. But those were simply that. Daydreams. He did not want to actually face what Lord Asterion did on Xeron.

Granted, what they fight here on Javerè is not what Lord Asterion fought on Xeron. He fought Traitor Marines, Chaos Sorcerers, at least one fully incarnated Bloodthirster, lots and lots of traitor guard, lesser daemons, and lesser daemons. He had to think that twice, because with a full chaos incursion, Lord Asterion had to kill a lot of lesser daemons.

Lord Asterion also had Titan support.

"SCREAMERS INCOMING!" A PDF Trooper screams in warning, and is bisected by a swooping warp-spawned manta ray. The possessed civilians surge forward from the roads and alleys again, seemingly from every direction, always supported by focused, overwhelming barrages of lasbolts and heavy stubber fire. Return fire is just as fierce, supported by heavy bolters and missile strikes of brutal frag missiles and punishing krak strikes, but with the sheer density of civilian slave fodder, it is ineffectual at best.

Oh, he would kill so many heretics for a single Titan. Even one Knight could be so helpful right now. The best he can do now is push, as hard as possible, as fiercely as possible, into the city. They need to move quickly before the enemy encircles them, or they will get destroyed. The city's aura of domination is just as strong as before, maybe even stronger, and they do not have long. Chaplain Koris can only do so much.

"FIRE AND FURY, SOLDIERS OF THE IMPERIUM! DO YOU WANT TO LIVE FOREVER?!" Even with one shoulder limp and the pauldron on it blasted to a single frame, the Chaplain's rhetoric is as fiery as ever. Absolutely scathing against the traitor enemy, indeed. Okay, Chaplain Koris can do a lot. But even his fiery speeches cannot make it to the Daemon at the heart of the city.

That will have to be Sergeant Darmus' burden to bear.

"FORWARD!" The Captain orders. "INTO THE CITY! THESE DAEMONS HAVE NO POWER HERE!"

----

Darmus broadcasts yellow to his units. Here, in the heart of the enemy's stronghold, they are on vox silence. Ident-runes only, in coded message.

All of his men report back in the green. His Vanguards, Isidor's Tactical Marines, and Felas' Scouts. Even so young, those initiates have proven themselves capable even in the absence of their Sergeant, who is off fulfilling the other half of their strategy. Perhaps he shall write up a recommendation for each of them, and raise them to Assault Marine.

Darmus looks down at the girl hugging him tightly with arms around his waist. Joyuse nods. Fear is obvious in her eyes, but at least she is willing to fight. He taps the side of his helmet to assure her - at least she knows basic Guard battle cant through what basic Acolyte training she got. He broadcasts a purple rune. Recon, report.

Several blue runes light up by the corner of his eye. Empty, save for the daemon. Good.

He transmits, and draws his power sword. Red rune, lit up thrice. Initiate the assault. Full force. Glory or Death.

----

The girl was once a mere psyker, blessed with the power of the Warp. Truly blessed, and truly gifted, a master of dominating wills and speaking with only the power of her mind. She was dressed in simple dresses, wore her long red hair into pigtails, always went barefoot wherever she went. Without her powers, she would be like any other child. Now, she looks scarcely different.

But she is that girl no longer.

Hidden From Sight: Rolled 56 vs 30, 2 Degrees of Success
Successful Infiltration into the Central Spire Ruins
In Close Combat Range!
Maleficaris' Attention is Drawn at the Last Second!

"GLORY OR DEATH!"

A crimson Rhino flies through a pile of rubble, pintle stormbolter screaming. Snipers in the windows take shots at the daemonhost before she can fry it with lightning, drawing her attention with sniper fire - and her bolts of warpfire.

"TEMPTER OF SOULS!" a mighty voice bellows. "HOW CAN YOUR LIES GUARD YOU AGAINST MY FURY?!"

Crimson lightning crashes through the opposite wall, bringing down a building foundation with speed and size combined. Crimson Crusaders charge, both Vanguards and Tactical Marines, engaging with every ounce of firepower they can bring to bear against the daemonhost .

For all their war cries and words, Darmus knows. He knows that they need to be fast. They have to get the Pariah to the Daemon immediately. On its own, the Lord of Change could kill them all, even lessened by the binding. As one who has taken this host willingly, who knows what it could do?

The daemonhost flinches as the Rhino makes speed towards it, its human girl face curled with inhuman hatred.

"Untouchable," she snarls in her girl voice, delicate and doll-like. She throws her hands out, casting a wave of psychic energy. Stone rattles and bone sings. It shifts and melds. It splits and shatters like flesh and bone.

The dead rise up and dance to the daemon's tune, and she throws them in the path of the Rhino.

"Sergeant, they are charging into our Rhino," their driver shouts, as amazed as any of the others.

"Drive," Isidor orders. "Crush them under our tracks! Get us close!"

"Aye, Sergeant! All power to engines!"

Space Marine Assault: Rolled 32 vs 45, 1 Degree of Failure
Failed to Deploy the Pariah!
Maleficaris is Unharmed!

"Ramming speed!"

The Rhino makes contact, and shatters the risen dead like a sledgehammer on ice. Their bones and remains are crushed underneath its tracks, just as Isidor predicted. The daemon was counting on it.

The treads crystalise and shatter in contact with the risen dead. The Rhino, most noble and graceful of all Imperial war engines, grinds to a halt. The Crimson Crusaders intensify their assault, against the daemon and the risen dead, but their assault is insufficient. Even Kadellon's plasma bolts are flensed from existence by the daemonhost's will.

By the time Darmus and Isidor emerge from their Rhino, weapons brought to bear and ready to throw Joyuse like a javelin, they see the daemonhost, the little girl, clutch an orb of swirling blue lightning in between her palms.

"Sorcery," Darmus snarls. "Crusaders! Tak--"

She crushes it, and calls upon hell and high water.

Daemonic Counterattack: Rolled 100 vs 55, 4 Degrees of Success
Rending Strike!

Lightning and fire come from all directions and no direction at once, murderous to behold and impossible to evade. Crimson Crusaders fry in their armor, vital systems fail, runes flicker into darkness. Those afflicted tear their helmets off to recover vision, if they can even move when lightning wracks their nerves and flame overwhelms their senses.

2 Vanguard Veterans are Wounded!

5 Tactical Marines are in Critical Condition!

"PUSH THE ASSAULT!" Kadellon booms. His voice is more felt than heard, even compared to the plasma cannon on his arm that never once stopped singing. "THE DAEMON EXPECTS US TO FLEE! KILL IT FOR ITS HUBRIS!"

The ground splits apart beneath the ancient's feet like a ravenous maw. Space Marines are consumed whole. Even Kadellon's massive dreadnought frame falls down half its height, where he can do little but turn on the spot.

"Climb!" He roars.

The ground seals. The Space Marines within are forever silenced.

Once again, Dreadnought Kadellon loses his arms and legs.

3 Tactical Marines are Slain!
A Vanguard Veteran is Slain!

Kadellon is Immobilised! Plasma Cannon and Assault Claw Disabled!

"Well, this is fantastic," Isidor snarls. Darmus is trying to advance in spite of everything, damn fool that he is. "Kadellon is incapacitated, and we all have the daemon's attention. It appears anything short of an orbital strike won't kill this daemon now. What say you, Force Commander?"

"I say you shut your mouth and keep advancing!" None of them want to mention their hidden weapon. "And keep your head down if you have time to blather, Isidor! That daemon is not done yet!"

Stone gathers around her in a cloud, and then solidifies and heats up, becomes glowing hot crystal. It freezes in an instant and shatters into shards. Shards of razor-sharp warpglass, keen enough to rival power weapons in sharpness.

"...Just like Sortiarius," Darmus curses.

"Why is everything like Sortiarius?!" Joyuse screams hysterically.

"Because, child," Isidor snickers - trust him to keep humor even now, "Sorcerers are awful, and daemons are awful, but sorcerous daemons are the most terrible of all. So hit the ground and TAKE COVER!"

The girl throws her hands out. Warpglass flies everywhere. It is dense, like the summer rain.

Gold and crimson swallows her worldview. And then gold and crimson is swallowed by white.

Joyuse, blinded, passes out.

----

Joyuse wakes up seconds later, to the groaning and death rattle of the Space Marines in front and around her. She had never heard a Space Marine's pained scream before. They had taken their wounds silently, or only gotten angrier. The two around her never got wounded at all. But here, and now, she cannot deny the bloodstained holes in their armor, or their anguished breathing, or how Darmus seems to be twitching involuntarily.

She checks herself, and finds the badge that Darmus passed to her flickering and sparking. He called it a 'shield' and a 'contingency', just for her. Well, it was useless now. She threw it aside.

Isidor is Wounded!
Darmus is Critically Wounded!

Joyuse is Wounded!
- Unstable Refractor Field: Wound Absorbed!
- The Unstable Refractor Field has been Destroyed!

The girl tried pushing Darmus' body aside, but his body is too heavy. She climbs as much as she can, over her plastron, and sees it.

Morale Test: 29 vs 40, 1 Degree of Failure
Squad Broken!

The daemon is still there. Completely untouched. Her pigtails flow freely and wildly, like tendrils. Lightning courses through them, and through the rest of the girl. How can she have such a spiteful, hateful face? How can a girl so young look so evil?

Isidor tries to rise beside her, and rouse the Space Marines around him to action. They move, but it feels like a wasted gesture. All of them know they cannot hurt the daemon. None of them are like this 'Lord Asterion' all of them speak so highly of, when they talk like she isn't even there.

She falls back behind Darmus' body, and weeps. For nothing can save them now. Not even the gift Lord Reyynmann said she had.

Remaining Force:
3 Vanguard Veterans (2 Wounded)
6 Tactical Marines (5 Wounded)
Sergeant Isidor (Wounded)
Sergeant Darmus (Wounded)
Ancient Kadellon (Immobilised, Weapon Systems Disabled)
Pariah Joyuse

----

Five kilometers away, Scout Sergeant Adrian Felas, hidden under his camocloak like a tarp and flat on the ground but for his boltgun, takes aim on his target. The primary assault has failed, but that is where the Crimson Crusaders shine. Never presume the first stratagem, however furious, however brilliant, however the resolve of those who see it through, will work. Always have a contingency.

And he is that contingency.

He has made a shot like this not an hour ago. It was even more difficult than this one. He had no scope, nothing but a single bolt. He was upside down, hanging precariously from metal bars that could scarcely hold his weight. And he did it. He killed the Sorcerer.

He can kill the Daemon.

He squeezes the trigger, and lets the Kraken fly.

----

The end of daemonkind is heard throughout the city, long after it has already happened.

Alas, it was not to be.

The Woe of Daemonkind: Rolled 21 vs 30, Close Failure
Dodge - Grazed!
Attention Drawn, Scout Spotted!

The shot, meant for the girl's head, was knocked off course. One of her twintails was blown open instead, leaving half of her hair unkempt and uneven by the efforts of a dense adamantium dart. Felas curses. He should have anticipated this. Even without conscious effort, the daemon will defend herself.

But he knows the failure lies only himself. He must atone for this.

The Scout repositions quickly, before warp lightning vaporises his position.

----

They saw it. They all saw it. The shot that blew open one of the girl's pigtails - and nothing more. Isidor curses loudly at the daemon, held back from a suicidal charge only by the efforts of his surviving squadmates.

"Clever," the girl sneers - it is the face of terror, and Joyuse only retreats further into herself. "But ineffective. Did you think the hand that smote the Tyrant will end me?!"

"We shall… end you regardless…" Darmus wheezes, on the verge of death, and forces himself to his feet, with only his sword for support. If Joyuse were aware of the world around her, she would be horrified at the true extent of his wounds. The ceramite shell on his armor is blown open in many places, revealing frayed electromotive fibre bundles. One of his arms is shredded, not bleeding only by the power of the Larraman Cells. The augmented physiology of a Space Marine is the only reason why Darmus is still alive, let alone standing and ready for a defiant charge.

"Fool, did you think--"

Darmus breaks off into a charge before the Lord of Change finishes, sword raised up high in his singular working arm.

For the Emperor!: Rolled 27 vs 50, 2 Degrees of Failure
Missed!
Exposed!

Daemonic Counterattack: Rolled 19 vs 30, 1 Degree of Failure
Missed!

He swings wildly, a shadow of the bladework a Crimson Crusader should have, and misses the mark. The daemonhost counters with a swipe from a talon forged of lightning. He evades, barely. The sheer proximity numbs the senses. But Darmus has no need for a follow up strike.

Intervention of Ancients: Rolled 92 vs 70, 2 Degrees of Success
Kadellon is Free!

"Glory… or Death…" The Sergeant finally falls limp as his injuries take him. But he has already done it.

The stone heaves and buckles where the great dreadnought is trapped. Ancient Kadellon roars through a rain of stone and metal of his own doing. His arms broken and useless, his legs failing and crushed, he kicks his way out of the ruined ground and into a charge.

"Impossible!" The daemon roars, again in that delicate doll-voice. "How can you fight without arms?!"

Furious Charge: Rolled 94 vs 60, 3 Degrees of Success
Ramming Speed!

"TIS BUT A SCRATCH!"

The sheer absurdity of it all saves him as much as the deceptive speed of a bulky dreadnought chassis. He slams into the daemon's host with all the force of a freight train, all the way into the rubble opposite him. The only reason she lives still is the daemonic powers within her grasp.

Lightning burns around Kadellon's shell. His charge is wildly successful, but he cannot hold forever. Not without arms. Bit by bit, the dreadnought is being forced away by the sorcerous will of Tzeentch's favored.

Rally: Rolled 79 vs 40, 3 Degrees of Success
Success!

But his example is all is needed.

Roused to action, the Acolyte of the Inquisition rises to her duty.

Kadellon is finally thrown off, and in that instant after, Joyuse throws herself at the girl.

And all becomes light and dust.

----

The sky returns to normal an instant after the banishment of the Greater Daemon of Tzeentch, showing the amber evening sky of Javerè. The civilians that survive fall to their knees or throw themselves at the traitorous PDF in retaliation for the violation they faced. Robbed of their daemonic unity, the traitorous PDF are quickly routed and surrounded by the efforts of 2nd Captain Cato Jantorus.

The brave few who confronted the daemon where the main force could not were quickly recovered and provided with medical attention on the Gloria Encarmine. Those who died were granted full honors as befits a Battle-Brother of the 2nd Company. The deaths were tallied, the gene-seed was tallied. The war was over, and now they wait for the Ordo Malleus.

Three weeks later, a silver Strike Cruiser arrives in-system.

----

"Thank you, Captain, for coming at my request." The old Inquisitor Lord looks just as he did the last time they met. Which was a very long time indeed. Over a century since Stonehaven, in fact. For a mortal, that was very impressive. "If not for your presence here, I fear this planet may have become a base for the ruinous powers."

"It is our duty," Cato responds simply. The reconstruction efforts on Javerè were swiftly organised by himself and the Governor of this world, who was grateful for his involvement. Those who were enslaved by the Witch were put to work rebuilding Hive Pius. The PDF who defected were all executed by flamer. "I am sorry for Interrogator Blake. Our failure to--"

Reyynmann raises a hand. "Don't blame yourself. Blake knew the risks. To be frank, Captain, I am more disappointed in him for not surviving in spite of everything. I am disappointed, but it is unavoidable. I thank you for keeping Joyuse safe, however. Where is she?"

"The Blank is in the Sanguinary, beside Sergeant Darmus." He smirks. "We are of the opinion that she is attracted to him."

"Well," the Inquisitor smiles, "At least she has good taste. You have my thanks, Captain. The Ordo Malleus will remember your efforts. We shall take over from here, your Company is free to go."

So, the dice were rather fickle, but came through in the end. Considering what we went up against, I'd say our losses weren't too bad, and the blank survived, which is good. Overall, happy with how this went.

I'm thinking something like this. Building some favours with and in the case of the Mechanicus spending a minor one immediately. Building some gear for our Veterans, the Terminator Armour and the Land Raider, the Librarium and some stuff for 1st Company.

No idea for other actions. Perhaps testing for more specialists?

Ugh that was rough why is it we never get the nice routine missions where space Mariens can kick ass more or less safely?

Because you keep receiving missions from a Lord Inquisitor who deliberately only calls on Space Marines when he expects things to go hilariously wrong. And even then, this mission went even more hilariously wrong than he was expecting.

On the one hand, a 400 year old Lord Inquisitor of the Ordo Malleus should have better foresight when it comes to chaos.

On the other hand, lolchaos.

Is it at all possible to offer to detach a squad of the 2nd Company to work alongside the Blank? I love the characterisation of her, and I'd like her to survive and thrive...
