Talking to Shari
[X] Go see what Shari is up to.

The wood of the piano is a nice chocolate-like brown, almost like a dark walnut, but looking at it carefully, it doesn't seem to actually be walnut, or any other common woods you're familiar with. Not that that should be a problem … but the fact that its finish seems to be thinning could be. You add that to the list of questions for the refurbishment agent and get to work as Ginga shakes her head and quietly herds her charges away. You carefully wipe the whole thing down for dust, then again with a very lightly damp cloth, making sure the wood is dry immediately after. The keys aren't ivory or wood, so you just wipe them down with a slightly wetter cloth, again making sure to wipe them dry. The interior of the casing is in quite good shape as well, and you clean out the action - what parts you haven't removed for replacement - with a small wire brush. After a few more minor adjustments, and a careful inspection to make sure you didn't somehow accidentally damage something, you sigh, content and relaxed. Now, what to do … no, you know what you're going to do. You set your clones to searching the facility for Shari. She doesn't seem to be in the building, however, even though her car is still here, and you start worrying. There are only so many places at Long Arch, and she was doing some kind of testing ….

Your eyes gleam and you dash away, drawing your now-unnecessary clones back to you. Sure enough, after you compose yourself and approach the Combat Simulator with your parasol warding you from the sun, you find the young woman working with a series of screens and keyboards. You make sure you make sufficient noise approaching that she doesn't get startled and clear your throat. She turns to see who's approaching and carefully masks her irritation - not well enough to fool you, of course, but well enough that you can be polite and not mention it. You bow your head. "Hello, Shari. I wanted to thank you for taking the time to drive me around so I could get the piano." She nods back.

"It's not a big deal, Flandre. And I wouldn't have been doing anything terribly important here - a few of the tests aren't done yet even now, in fact." You lean forward eagerly.

"What are you doing, anyway? Are you the maintenance person for the Simulator?" She chuckles - almost a dark giggle more than a proper laugh.

"Oh, no. The Simulator is my baby. I originally designed it for the RF6 Forwards to train at, but since I was able to go wild with my plans it's still being used by a lot of groups that don't have their own training grounds or simulators. Well, I guess I am doing maintenance right now, and I'm usually the one doing everything except the routine before- and after-practice maintenance, but what I'm doing today is some enhancement." You restrain a giggle at her obviously-waiting-for-you expression.

"Enhancement?" She nods energetically and her fingers fly across the keyboards.

"Yep! Hayate asked for it - a 'Final Boss' opponent for people to face if they want to test themselves. She gave me lots of specifications for it, so hopefully it'll go over well. And a variant combat arena, but that's easy enough to put in." You lean forward and study her expression.

"… It's me, isn't it? Am I the Final Boss?" She chuckles and shakes her head.

"Nope! And you won't find out until tonight when I finish. I had been thinking of asking Ginga to test it out, but maybe if someone else asks nicely I might be willing to let that person try it out." You shake your head at her heavy-handed suggestion - of course, she probably meant for it to be obvious that she's not-quite-offering it to you. You stare out at the empty peninsula.

"Hmm … maybe. Actually, are there any opponents besides the Gadget Drones for practice purposes? Depending on how long I'll be here and not doing missions, I was hoping to use the Simulator to help teach Satsuki how to fight." Shari frowns and casts a sideways glance toward you.

"… Mm, sort of. The Gadget Drones are the base opponent to fight, because unless you're going up against something specific, practicing against a teammate is preferable to a machine like the Simulator - it's just not that smart, since so much processing power is devoted to keeping everything running properly. Once you get your information finalized - which won't be until after you get your Device back, because it's necessary to the process - it shouldn't be a problem getting you limited access, especially if you'll be doing most of your practice at night. You'll have to go through a class or two on how to work it, because there won't necessarily be anyone to help you run it, but Cinque or her sisters should be able to help explain things. They just don't have access to the system itself." You nod. There is one more thing you're curious about ….

"So … how does the Simulator work, exactly? Is it creating things?" After a moment Shari launches into an unnecessarily long-winded technical explanation - all the Simulator does is manipulate mana, both stored and free, to create simulacra of 'solid' magic that follow the normal physical laws they should … unless the situation is tweaked. The generator the Simulator uses is powerful, but it's not unlimited, so things like simulating extremely high- or low-pressure areas, or altering gravity, are possible, but not over too wide an area, nor are they recommended for long-term exercises. Simple things like 'zombie mode' - where hits anywhere except specific locations, like the head on humanoid opponents - don't really require anything extra, but a more complex scenario like continuous-growth terrain can easily spiral out of control and reach the point where the Simulator shuts down before it overloads itself … although that's more a safety measure than an actual necessity, as Shari explains that a reasonable chunk of operating power is devoted to making sure that nothing the Simulator does can lethally injure someone outside of odd specifics that can't be predicted. For example, if someone fell and would have landed on their neck, breaking it, the Simulator is supposed to automatically adjust the parameters of the landing area to slow them down and alter the fall so they hit somewhere less likely to be fatal. The precautions can be reduced, or even removed entirely, but those send a warning to several administrators so it's not something done for most training purposes.

"… Hehehe …." Shari laughs nervously and brushes her hair back. "Anyway, that's my little spiel, I guess. Was there anything else?" You tap your lips and stare out at the empty Simulator. Not really, but ….

The Fifth's consciousnesses swirled together, minds conspiring and drifting apart as it planned. Its goals were long-term and short-term in duration, small-scale and continental in scope. More than a mere vampire, it grasped at something akin to the Second's formlessness, dominating and suborning hundreds of weaker wills over the centuries of its growing existence, and if it made use of mortals, it merely did so because they were useful tools. With its breadth of powers and abilities, with constituent bodies that did not fear the sun, or the passage of water, with the sorcery of a multitude, it considered only the First and Second above it. The Third hid in her mountains, thinking herself barricaded by the sea; the Fourth lorded its resistances over the others and claimed power that was not his by true right.

Merchants sold and bought and traded, benefiting the thriving networks the Fifth had graciously decided to allow its mortals to construct. Soldiers and warriors trained and armed themselves for the coming war the Fifth knew was coming. It looked greedily to the small state to the west, its divinations calculating how best to absorb the French magicians when the time came to marshal itself for war. But - those auguries and scryings began to fail, showing conflicting reports and irrelevancies instead of the path to dominion. Enraged, the Fifth turned its attention to the disruption, channeling all its resources to determining the source. South. South and close. It dove into those bodies nearest the problem and snarled defiance - then laughed wildly from a dozen throats as its attackers revealed themselves.

Two figures hung in the night sky, shining under the light of the moon. The Fifth laughed and opened its channels, the power of hundreds of vampires flowing into these twelve bodies as its prey came to it. Then the nearer of its prey spoke. "Your plans aren't very effective, Herzog. Thirty years of effort and you've only made three ineffectual attempts on us? Considering your resources, I would have expected either more attempts, or else some basic competency. Still, I suppose that's about the most I should have expected from a Hanseatic swine-licker." The Fifth stopped its laughter and gazed coolly up at the supposedly-sibling vampires. Form and function differed in them both, but if it could have only one, it would choose ….

"And yet you have grown, have you not? Had you not been pressed, been threatened and imperiled, would your strength have increased, or would you still be miserable little creatures barely able to keep a miserable little day's-walk township safe from human invaders, let alone a pack of vargr. You have grown strong, and I have spent little on the strengthening of you." A dozen arms stretched out in offering. "Now, join with us. Become a whole with us. Fear not and be threatened not. Be welcomed." The Fifth didn't expect the temptation to succeed, but the hesitation it caused would be useful - as the silver-haired vampire shook her head, refuting it, the castle's protections activated. Beams of coruscating power, greens and browns and blues, erupted from prepared sigils on the castle walls. Skulls on pikes atop the towers - enchanted relics of invaders, holy men, and traitors - unleashed waves and cones of energy, darkening the night with their shadows. And of the twelve bodies the Fifth held in personal thrall, half called upon their own arcane powers to send forth storms of magical needles. All this - and without serious effort or risk to its prey. The Fifth smiled … but then it realized what was happening and its consciousnesses recoiled. The vampires present, momentarily released from the Fifth's direct control, began taking their own actions - the magicians changed their spells to more powerful and dangerous effects, while the warriors readied their own personal protections and called forth weapons to hastily enchant.

The two vampires were weathering the storm! The Fifth focused its attention and marveled in delight - she was doing it herself! Only the one of them, and she could bat aside, dissipate, block, and otherwise defeat the sorcerous assault. And soon she would join it …. The Fifth reestablished dominion over its smallest pieces and ceased the castle's assault. The channels widened and surged as the magical energy that powered the hundreds of bodies the Fifth claimed was brought to bear against the two children before it - and finally they counterattacked. Six tempests of magical power stormed from the castle's central keep, only for one to be cut short. The Fifth admired the darker-than-night spear that embedded itself in the keep after cleaving through one of its sorcerers and set aside a portion of its minds to analyze it. The two vampires followed the spear, smashing through the veils that warded the keep, and a melee erupted. The bejeweled vampire grinned manically as she swung a twisted rod nearly her own height and stormed against the warriors, smashing weapons and bodies with equal ease. The chiropteran sister fought with more impossible ease, taking up the black spear with one hand and a massive greatsword with the other, her own sorcery deflecting and weakening the magician-vampires' attacks so she could close in with her weapons. Intrigued, the Fifth had its surviving vampires flee into the castle - two sorcerers and three warriors, after less than a minute of bloody combat. Truly, the prey were such marvelous prizes!

Of course, they followed, intent on their perceived opponents' destruction, and as before, the silver-haired sister led the way. This time, however, both contributed to the destruction, and the Fifth believed it finally saw symptoms of weakness in the leader. The interior defenses were no less complex and dangerous than the exterior protections, and warping of space and merging with other realms had produced a tower with a substantially greater volume than would normally be possible. The lead sister would block or deflect incoming attacks, and her performance led the Fifth the believe that she was the source behind its earlier failures in divination. Once the threat was identified, one sister or the other would obliterate it - the follower with gouts of arcane flames or an intense scarlet aura, the leader with her own magic or by casting her mysterious spear.

The Fifth marshaled its defenses as they fought their way to the center of the keep, and when they finally breached the throne room, what met them was a legion of lesser devils clad in armor and wielding a variety of arms, a phalanx of devil-magicians preparing their spells, the five surviving vampires who had lived in the castle, and a multitude of golems and mortal warriors beguiled into the Fifth's service over the years and wars. Once more, the Fifth offered a peaceful absorption of the sisters. The lead sister cast aside her sword and, without her constant reinforcement of its structure, the mundane blade shattered when it struck the stone floor.

"Well, Flandre? What do you think?" The blonde merely giggled in response, and at the sisters' fierce grins the Fifth felt confusion in its assembled army - and then fear, as the two vampires were suddenly five, and all hurled themselves forward. The Fifth watched in serene admiration as the princesses showed their battle-worth. The human chaff were worse than irrelevant, as it felt the lifeblood they spilled being drawn in by magician sister, empowering her, and the enchanted statuary performed only barely better than their mundane kin. The devil warriors, mercenaries and vassals both, fought with their typical fervor, but when the simulacra simply bowled into their lines to let the sisters through, their armor proved unable to resist the enchanted weapons they wielded, and the injuries they were able to inflict in turn were healed by the vampires' restorative capabilities. Then the Fifth allowed his troops to disperse and his magician servants through out their most potent spells, and its own bodies burst as the unbridled might of its collective sorcery seared stone and air and devil alike.

… All for naught. Somehow, the nature and path of the attacks had been anticipated, and in the barest instant of safety the Fifth had allowed its servants before unleashing its attack, the sisters had been transported to areas less covered by overlapping fields of power and had gleaming scarlet barriers erected. Those barriers shattered under the magical assault, and the sisters were hurled back against the ruin of the castle wall - but they were not as depleted as the Fifth had planned. Even as his sorcerous hirelings fled and his remaining knights stepped forward to meet their doom, a bleeding ruin with gem-studded wings thundered back into the keep, roaring hate and fury. And as the Fifth withdrew its consciousness from those bodies, it looked down into the courtyard - and flinched away from the bracketing barrage of arcane light surging upward from the equally-wrecked figure that remained outside.

It sighed - respect, admiration, desire, intrigue. The loss of the castle and its inhabitants was of little matter, and it now had a better idea of its prey's abilities. When it chose to make its strike, it would be prepared. Its attention twisted away - the Third was moving. It snarled silently, and the night sky to the north was treated to an aurora of violence as the sorcery of centuries fought across the narrow sea.

Last part has no issue? I do think Flandre looked forward with helping train others if that was an option, so I'm wondering if this may cause issues.

Edit: Last part amended.

Flan can teach Satsuki how to stand, how to hit, how to move, and so on perfectly well. What she can't do is personally train/spar with her at a similar skill level; if she tried sparring with Satsuki, it would swiftly change to "how long can you survive being hit by me" or "hit me once and you pass."

Interest in helping with others' training is as much because Ilya and Satsuki think she'd be good at it and she wants to impress them as it is because it's something new she might have a talent for. (Also, side advantages like still being able to go on missions if they're really important, having more time for Satsuki/shopping/stuff, and having a 'home' location where she spends most of her time instead of spending more time on missions that may or may not be boring.)

So, probably a good idea to change my write-in then.

What about... Asking tips to help Satsuki get over that reluctance then? Because any military-like group like them has to get recruits like that, right?

Well, we've got the Numbers here, not doing anything and the simulator with it's Gadget Drones if we want to throw Satsuki at foes weaker than Flandre.

There's that, but we ultimate want Satsuki to fight other people without hesitation when needed. Hence why my vote. The rest, we can use the simulator to see about Satsuki learning to adjust the power she put in her blows and helping her out in general.

"So … if this is so amazing and versatile, do other people use the same sort of thing? I mean, it'd make a great accompaniment for performances or workshops, wouldn't it?" Shari nods.

"You're right, and it does see use in entertainment - it's a lot easier to make a solid hologram projector and use that for your movies than to be constantly building new sets, for example. But most civilian uses - even most other combat simulators - simply don't come close to the sheer scope and complexity of this one. Most simulators and projectors use simple programmed configurations and only have a limited ability to affect the environment within them; not only can this Simulator adjust the environment much more drastically, it can do adjustments, even major ones, on the fly. It's also tied much more closely to the users' Devices, which lets it simulate certain effects more easily." She taps a different keyboard than the one she had been using, and a screen appears in front of you, showing the three Gadget Drones you're familiar with, as well as a fourth variety with legs. "The Gadget Drones, for example, emit an AMF that disrupts and breaks down magic. Obviously, we can't use that in the Simulator itself, because that would start destroying the projected environment. However, by manipulating the environment, the simulated Drones, and the users' Devices, it's possible to imitate the effects of an AMF. Most simulators don't have the processing power to handle that, especially not on such a large scale as this. Moreover, it takes a lot of energy to handle so many alterations over such a large area, and to be honest, this Simulator is a little excessive." She smiles happily, though. "But it's the best at what it does, and I'm going to keep working at it to make sure it stays that way."

You nod and stare out at the near-island. You haven't encountered anything quite like it, and it's certainly better than the few complex semi-illusions you've seen Patchouli make to simulate different environments, but you can't help imagining your sister's pet witch putting forth the effort to actually surpass the Combat Simulator. … Or trying to, anyway; you're not sure how she would handle rapid changes to ensure the safety of people using it, so in some cases the Simulator is probably going to be superior no matter what Patchouli tries. If nothing else, it doesn't require Patchouli, and that's a major advantage right there. "So how durable is it? How far can it be pushed before it breaks or needs to be adjusted?" Shari frowns at you.

"The Simulator itself isn't particularly durable - an ordinary person probably wouldn't be able to damage it without a military weapon of some kind, but even a weak mage could probably render it unusable. But if you're talking about up here, it's pretty safe. The platform has a lot of the extra safety features, and it's even got a very tightly-controlled AMF of its own to limit anyone going overboard with shooting and bombardment techniques. It's designed to shut down the projections and give error messages long before there's any actual danger, so unless you just blow the whole thing up you'll get a warning to stop doing anything before you damage it irreplaceably." You frown and raise an eyebrow.

"Wait, so the platform isn't really needed?" Shari looks a little nervous and embarrassed and chews her lower lip for a moment.

"Not … really. But it helps a lot with reducing energy requirements since it can absorb magical energy that's dispersed in the air. And a lot of the sensors for keeping everything as realistic and safe - or as close to the intended parameters, anyway - are in there, so it's not needed, but it is necessary." You nod and spin your parasol idly. So, basically, you can go all-out, just try to avoid drilling a hole in the platform with Laevateinn. Of course, that assumes that you'll ever face something that needs you to go all-out ….

"So, that Final Boss …." Shari turns to look at you. "Do you think it would be alright if I faced it tonight? Just to test it out?" She looks up at the sky and taps a finger against her chin.

"Hmm … I don't know …." She glances at you out of the corner of her eye and you see her fight to control a smirk. Oh, so it's that game! You put on a pitiful, hopeful, almost teary-eyed expression.

"Please?" Shocked at the need in you place in your voice, she twitches her head to stare directly at you, then laughs and shakes her head.

"You almost had me for a moment, you know? But … you don't have your Device, so I'd like for you to use one of the defaults -" You shake your head.

"It'll break. Juliette went through several Devices just trying to get them to survive connecting with me, let alone finding one that could actually work." She frowns and looks at the screen in front of her.

"… Then … you're fine with being more at risk because the Simulator won't be able to track you as well?" You smile, forcing down an indignant snort.

"I'll be fine." She gives you one more searching look before nodding and giving you a slight smile.

"Alright. This evening, then - before dinner, or after?" You shrug; it doesn't really matter, so long as Satsuki's awake. "After, then, just to make sure everything's lined up properly." She smiles to herself and takes a deep breath. You giggle and skip forward to give her a one-armed hug, pressing your head into her side like a snuggling cat.

"Thank you, Shari!" She stiffens, then gingerly pats your head. You giggle and look up at her, then hop back. She relaxes and you sigh contentedly. "Well, then, I'll leave you to your work. I'll see you tonight, if not sooner." You bow your head and she nods, still looking kind of nervous. "Bye~" You turn around and head back to the main compound. Ginga has to be around somewhere, after all ….

You find Nove and Wendi first, sitting in one of the less-empty rooms - there's a physical screen, like a computer but a bit bigger, sitting on a table showing two bright cars weaving through crowded streets, and the two girls have devices in their hands. Then one of the cars hits an obstacle and spins out of control, and Wendi laughs right before the second car slams into a wall. You shake your head and withdraw as Nove starts grumbling at her sister. No reason for you to butt in, after all. A few rooms away you find Ginga and Cinque taking turns pulling out rectangular blocks from a tall tower. You watch them for a few minutes before Cinque notices you when she moves around while looking for a block to pull out. Ginga turns around and raises a hand in greeting. "Flandre. Anything I can help you with?" You smile and walk into the room, pulling a chair over to sit down near their table.

"Hm, maybe. How do you teach someone to be aggressive?" Teaching Satsuki how to fight shouldn't be a problem, but you're not sure how to make her willing to …. Ginga frowns at you, but waits to reply until after Cinque pulls out a block - and then they wait a moment more, apparently half-expecting something to happen, but nothing does.

"I don't really know. Mm, what exactly are you trying to do?" She gets up and studies one side of the tower carefully. They must be trying to remove blocks without letting the tower fall.

"Well, I'm teaching and training Satsuki in a lot of things. Fighting is going to be one of them, because she needs to learn how to take care of herself. But - well, she doesn't like hurting people, and that translates into an extreme reluctance to fight, to the point where even though she knows she can't really hurt the person she's fighting, she holds back. And I don't want her to have to try and avoid fighting until someone's already put a few stakes in her before she realizes that she can't avoid it and has to go out of control to really fight back." Ginga frowns and taps her fingers against her left arm.

"Well … you're probably not going to have much luck, to be honest, and I'm not sure how much I'll be able to help you. If she doesn't want to fight and can't be convinced that it's necessary, there really isn't anything you can do." You scowl at her unhelpful response.

"This isn't something you've had to deal with before?" You frown at Cinque, but she seems genuinely interested and not just poking at you, so you shake your head.

"No. We had soldiers, sure, but they were volunteers, or at least not completely unwilling to fight. And with the different social and societal conditions due to the vastly different time and location, I'm not sure my ways of convincing her would even work." Both Cinque and Ginga stop and frown at you. It takes you a moment to realize what they're thinking, and you scowl again and shake your head. "No, I didn't have anything to do with her becoming a vampire. She was already a vampire when I met her, had been for several months - so she's about as old as she looks. Anyway … I mean, yes, I could just browbeat her, break her down and remold her, but that takes time and she's not really a permanent servant of mine anyway; I'm taking care of her until she can stand on her own. If, at that point, she wants to stay with me, that's fine." You frown and look down at your idly swinging legs. "If I have the time and get permission, I'd like to help her out with the Simulator, but fighting machines and illusions is different than fighting people." Cinque shakes her head.

"It's unfortunate that we can't let Nove spar with her," she says, and you perk up. Ginga waves her arm and shakes her head before you can say anything, though.

"It won't be allowed, Flandre - not for a long time, anyway. There are a lot of clearances that are needed just to allow them to exercise at higher levels. Letting Nove actually fight, even in a controlled sparring match, is pretty much out of the question." You scowl and pout, and Ginga sighs. "I'm sorry, Flandre." You nod grumpily and bring your knees up to your chest. What Satsuki needs is control and confidence in herself, and maybe you can get that for her with the Simulator, but it's probably not smart enough. A live sparring partner would be better - someone who can fight at her level instead of significantly higher or lower than it. One eye opens to a slit and you stare at Ginga through it. Maybe her? But if she shot down Nove and didn't suggest herself, either she's not a hand-to-hand fighter or she doesn't want to. You close your eyes and force yourself to relax, wrapping your wings around your body for a moment.

Eh, fuck it. Will run with this idea.

[X] Keep talking to Ginga and Cinque.
-[X] Well, you saw some of them, sure, but how are the rest of Cinque's sisters doing anyway?

Just a heads-up - for a variety of reasons which I don't particularly feel like going into right now, there's a strong possibility that the update will be delayed until tomorrow. It will definitely be delayed at least until mid-afternoon. If it is delayed until tomorrow, I will try to write a sidestory as well - probably Remilia offering Flan's invitation to Illya, although I'm not locking myself to that.

[X] Keep talking to Ginga and Cinque.
-[X] About Satsuki's capabilities. Maybe they can help find someone in her skill range? This world seems unusually good at non-lethal fighting, so if you're ever going to teach her to defend herself without putting her where she has to snap and kill a couple of people first theres nowhere better.
