[X] Keep talking to Shari.
-[X] If its so versatile, why don't you see them using it for other stuff? Seems like it'd make a good workshop or performance venue.
-[X] Whats the upper limit to how much punishment it can take before something breaks? Or is anything fine as long as it only hits the constructs and not the generator? The platform itself?
[X] Ask to face the 'Final Boss' tonight.
-[X] Go talk to Ginga.
--[X] Simulator aside, maybe she could have some tips to help Satsuki get over that reluctance to fight?
"So … if this is so amazing and versatile, do other people use the same sort of thing? I mean, it'd make a great accompaniment for performances or workshops, wouldn't it?" Shari nods.
"You're right, and it does see use in entertainment - it's a lot easier to make a solid hologram projector and use that for your movies than to be constantly building new sets, for example. But most civilian uses - even most other combat simulators - simply don't come close to the sheer scope and complexity of this one. Most simulators and projectors use simple programmed configurations and only have a limited ability to affect the environment within them; not only can this Simulator adjust the environment much more drastically, it can do adjustments, even major ones, on the fly. It's also tied much more closely to the users' Devices, which lets it simulate certain effects more easily." She taps a different keyboard than the one she had been using, and a screen appears in front of you, showing the three Gadget Drones you're familiar with, as well as a fourth variety with legs. "The Gadget Drones, for example, emit an AMF that disrupts and breaks down magic. Obviously, we can't use that in the Simulator itself, because that would start destroying the projected environment. However, by manipulating the environment, the simulated Drones, and the users' Devices, it's possible to imitate the effects of an AMF. Most simulators don't have the processing power to handle that, especially not on such a large scale as this. Moreover, it takes a lot of energy to handle so many alterations over such a large area, and to be honest, this Simulator is a little excessive." She smiles happily, though. "But it's the best at what it does, and I'm going to keep working at it to make sure it stays that way."
You nod and stare out at the near-island. You haven't encountered anything quite like it, and it's certainly better than the few complex semi-illusions you've seen Patchouli make to simulate different environments, but you can't help imagining your sister's pet witch putting forth the effort to actually surpass the Combat Simulator. … Or trying to, anyway; you're not sure how she would handle rapid changes to ensure the safety of people using it, so in some cases the Simulator is probably going to be superior no matter what Patchouli tries. If nothing else, it doesn't require Patchouli, and that's a major advantage right there. "So how durable is it? How far can it be pushed before it breaks or needs to be adjusted?" Shari frowns at you.
"The Simulator itself isn't particularly durable - an ordinary person probably wouldn't be able to damage it without a military weapon of some kind, but even a weak mage could probably render it unusable. But if you're talking about up here, it's pretty safe. The platform has a lot of the extra safety features, and it's even got a very tightly-controlled AMF of its own to limit anyone going overboard with shooting and bombardment techniques. It's designed to shut down the projections and give error messages long before there's any actual danger, so unless you just blow the whole thing up you'll get a warning to stop doing anything before you damage it irreplaceably." You frown and raise an eyebrow.
"Wait, so the platform isn't really needed?" Shari looks a little nervous and embarrassed and chews her lower lip for a moment.
"Not … really. But it helps a lot with reducing energy requirements since it can absorb magical energy that's dispersed in the air. And a lot of the sensors for keeping everything as realistic and safe - or as close to the intended parameters, anyway - are in there, so it's not needed, but it is necessary." You nod and spin your parasol idly. So, basically, you can go all-out, just try to avoid drilling a hole in the platform with Laevateinn. Of course, that assumes that you'll ever face something that needs you to go all-out ….
"So, that Final Boss …." Shari turns to look at you. "Do you think it would be alright if I faced it tonight? Just to test it out?" She looks up at the sky and taps a finger against her chin.
"Hmm … I don't know …." She glances at you out of the corner of her eye and you see her fight to control a smirk. Oh, so it's that game! You put on a pitiful, hopeful, almost teary-eyed expression.
"Please?" Shocked at the need in you place in your voice, she twitches her head to stare directly at you, then laughs and shakes her head.
"You almost had me for a moment, you know? But … you don't have your Device, so I'd like for you to use one of the defaults -" You shake your head.
"It'll break. Juliette went through several Devices just trying to get them to survive connecting with me, let alone finding one that could actually work." She frowns and looks at the screen in front of her.
"… Then … you're fine with being more at risk because the Simulator won't be able to track you as well?" You smile, forcing down an indignant snort.
"I'll be fine." She gives you one more searching look before nodding and giving you a slight smile.
"Alright. This evening, then - before dinner, or after?" You shrug; it doesn't really matter, so long as Satsuki's awake. "After, then, just to make sure everything's lined up properly." She smiles to herself and takes a deep breath. You giggle and skip forward to give her a one-armed hug, pressing your head into her side like a snuggling cat.
"Thank you, Shari!" She stiffens, then gingerly pats your head. You giggle and look up at her, then hop back. She relaxes and you sigh contentedly. "Well, then, I'll leave you to your work. I'll see you tonight, if not sooner." You bow your head and she nods, still looking kind of nervous. "Bye~" You turn around and head back to the main compound. Ginga has to be around somewhere, after all ….
You find Nove and Wendi first, sitting in one of the less-empty rooms - there's a physical screen, like a computer but a bit bigger, sitting on a table showing two bright cars weaving through crowded streets, and the two girls have devices in their hands. Then one of the cars hits an obstacle and spins out of control, and Wendi laughs right before the second car slams into a wall. You shake your head and withdraw as Nove starts grumbling at her sister. No reason for you to butt in, after all. A few rooms away you find Ginga and Cinque taking turns pulling out rectangular blocks from a tall tower. You watch them for a few minutes before Cinque notices you when she moves around while looking for a block to pull out. Ginga turns around and raises a hand in greeting. "Flandre. Anything I can help you with?" You smile and walk into the room, pulling a chair over to sit down near their table.
"Hm, maybe. How do you teach someone to be aggressive?" Teaching Satsuki how to fight shouldn't be a problem, but you're not sure how to make her willing to …. Ginga frowns at you, but waits to reply until after Cinque pulls out a block - and then they wait a moment more, apparently half-expecting something to happen, but nothing does.
"I don't really know. Mm, what exactly are you trying to do?" She gets up and studies one side of the tower carefully. They must be trying to remove blocks without letting the tower fall.
"Well, I'm teaching and training Satsuki in a lot of things. Fighting is going to be one of them, because she needs to learn how to take care of herself. But - well, she doesn't like hurting people, and that translates into an extreme reluctance to fight, to the point where even though she knows she can't really hurt the person she's fighting, she holds back. And I don't want her to have to try and avoid fighting until someone's already put a few stakes in her before she realizes that she can't avoid it and has to go out of control to really fight back." Ginga frowns and taps her fingers against her left arm.
"Well … you're probably not going to have much luck, to be honest, and I'm not sure how much I'll be able to help you. If she doesn't want to fight and can't be convinced that it's necessary, there really isn't anything you can do." You scowl at her unhelpful response.
"This isn't something you've had to deal with before?" You frown at Cinque, but she seems genuinely interested and not just poking at you, so you shake your head.
"No. We had soldiers, sure, but they were volunteers, or at least not completely unwilling to fight. And with the different social and societal conditions due to the vastly different time and location, I'm not sure my ways of convincing her would even work." Both Cinque and Ginga stop and frown at you. It takes you a moment to realize what they're thinking, and you scowl again and shake your head. "No, I didn't have anything to do with her becoming a vampire. She was already a vampire when I met her, had been for several months - so she's about as old as she looks. Anyway … I mean, yes, I could just browbeat her, break her down and remold her, but that takes time and she's not really a permanent servant of mine anyway; I'm taking care of her until she can stand on her own. If, at that point, she wants to stay with me, that's fine." You frown and look down at your idly swinging legs. "If I have the time and get permission, I'd like to help her out with the Simulator, but fighting machines and illusions is different than fighting people." Cinque shakes her head.
"It's unfortunate that we can't let Nove spar with her," she says, and you perk up. Ginga waves her arm and shakes her head before you can say anything, though.
"It won't be allowed, Flandre - not for a long time, anyway. There are a lot of clearances that are needed just to allow them to exercise at higher levels. Letting Nove actually fight, even in a controlled sparring match, is pretty much out of the question." You scowl and pout, and Ginga sighs. "I'm sorry, Flandre." You nod grumpily and bring your knees up to your chest. What Satsuki needs is control and confidence in herself, and maybe you can get that for her with the Simulator, but it's probably not smart enough. A live sparring partner would be better - someone who can fight at her level instead of significantly higher or lower than it. One eye opens to a slit and you stare at Ginga through it. Maybe her? But if she shot down Nove and didn't suggest herself, either she's not a hand-to-hand fighter or she doesn't want to. You close your eyes and force yourself to relax, wrapping your wings around your body for a moment.
