[X] Ask Deis if she can help you make bomb-type Spell Cards.
"Then can you help me make a bomb Spell Card?" Deis raises an eyebrow curiously.
"A bomb? Why would you want one of those?"
"Well, apart from them being more dangerous, anyone who can use a Spell Card can use one, since they have their own store of energy, and since they're shorter and flashy, they make for great signals!" You look at her as hopefully as you can – lower lip stuck out like so, eyes wide and round, hands clasped together under your chin. She sighs and you start to quiver your lip just a little ….
"Alright, alright! Stop doing that!" You pout more properly and she shakes her head. "I'll help, but you're still the expert – a few looks and a demonstration aren't enough to help me make a Spell Card from nothing, you know." You smile and clap your hands.
"Well, I haven't made any before, either, so it'll be a learning experience for both of us! It'll be fun!" She groans as you take out several sheets of paper, a pencil, and some of your other Spell Cards. "But you're right, we should probably keep it simple. Like my sister's, I think … let's see …." Deis moves so she can see over your shoulder, and Ershin walks a little closer as well.
"So, what are we looking at and for?"
"Well, Spell Cards aren't descriptions, they're directions, so how everything works in a given Spell Card can be figured out by looking at the card itself. Things like what the bullets look like or what color they are, any extra effects like putting energy into a protective screen, as well as the bullet pattern, they're all on the card. So it's kind of easy to build off an existing Spell Card – you just alter known variables until you're happy with it. I'm not sure if these will be much help with the kind of bomb I want, though, because I don't use that kind of energy pattern …."
"Well, is there another kind of bomb you might be interested in? If there's something a bit easier, we can start with that, and then try to figure out how to do this other one." You tap your lips thoughtfully, then grin and put most of your Spell Cards away, leaving out only a Taboo "Laevateinn."
"This one, then. Using Laevateinn. So the attack pattern …." You start copying the relevant part onto one of the sheets of paper. You take your gift out as well – you'll need it to make sure it works, after all. "See, one of the reasons I really wanted help is because a bomb Spell Card doesn't use its user's energy – instead, you put the energy into the card and just activate it. One of the times where having a more permanent medium than paper is useful. But if I tried this alone, every time I made something to test, I'd need to try to put energy in. And even if I did that properly, if it didn't work then I'd have wasted that energy because I'm definitely not good enough to take energy out."
"That's reasonable. So just what are you trying with this one?" You sit back and hold up your Spell Card.
"This uses Laevateinn and its fire-sword to make danmaku, and I want to base a bomb off that. A simple spin with the flaming blade and firing off lethal danmaku should be doable." Deis nods.
"So your Spell Card uses an actual column of fire, not a representation using some other kind of energy? And Spell Cards are non-lethal? So you managed to make actual fire not dangerous?" You nod.
"I don't know how it works, either, and it certainly hurts, but yeah, it won't kill you." She stares at you and you shrug; it can't be magic, because you can't use magic. She sighs and shakes her head.
"I'm going to have to get your sister to explain this to me," she says, and you giggle. It helps that the Spell Card is so free-form – as long as you're targeting your opponent, you aren't restricted too much, so the design is pretty simple. No time limit, no defenses, no recurring pattern, just a single swing and the bullet propagation. The resulting card is disconcertingly empty compared to any of your other Spell Cards, but Deis keeps you from making any changes until you test it, and helps make sure your power goes into the card and stays there instead of incinerating it, and then you're ready to see how it works. You fly away a bit and target a bird sleeping in a nearby tree. Laevateinn in your right hand, Spell Card in your left, you push a spark of power into the card – and nothing happens. You try again, voicing the card's temporary name, but it still fails to work, and even when you hold it against Laevateinn it doesn't do anything. Frustrated and dejected, you return to Deis. "Alright, we're missing something in the process. Give me a minute." You nod glumly and sit next to Ershin to wait for her to come up with something. "… Flan, how does a Spell Card work?"
"You put power into it, it puts you into a trance and you do the Spell Card." Strictly speaking, even the card and trance aren't necessary, but most people don't have the concentration to pull off the patterns in a good Spell Card, especially ones that have esoteric components.
"The card, or the design on the card?" You blink for a few seconds, her question sinking in, and then you hit yourself on the forehead. Unfortunately, you do so with the hand holding Laevateinn, and Deis winces. "Probably better that than hitting yourself with all the energy in that piece of paper. Come on, let's see if we can get it to cooperate." Deis manages to corral most of the energy out of the card and then funnels it back into the design, which glows orange when she's finished. Nervously, expectantly, hopefully, you repeat the test, and you squeal delightedly at the huge scar of melted earth and stone left in the wake of the blazing sword, as well as the scattered bursts made by the danmaku. Deis smiles proudly and Ershin applauds, and you and Deis make three more cards and empower them – Taboo "Laevateinn Strike." "Alright, so what was the one you wanted to do at the beginning?" You frown.
"Well, I know what I want, because I can do it, I just don't know how to make it. It's one I know my sister has, so it definitely works as a Spell Card. See, this is what I want." You move a ways away from them and float into the air. Concentration and focus – and then you expel power through your body. A small sphere flares scarlet around your body, but more energy shoots through your outstretched arms, your legs, and your head, forming a cross-like shape. You cut it off after a couple seconds, not wanting to waste too much energy. "But how to make a Spell Card that causes that effect … I don't know. It should be simple, since there's nothing complicated about what's being done." Deis frowns in thought, and you take out one of your blood packs to refresh yourself.
"Hmm … could you put the original card and your new one side by side?" Curious, you set them down in front of her and wait for her to make up her mind. Eventually she smiles at you. "Well, I've got nothing. That means it's time for every true magician's favorite pastime: experimenting!" Your first test is a waste, although you expected it to end that way – you simply charged an outline of yourself with power and tried to activate it. It exploded in your hand, but on Deis's advisement you only minimally charged it, so the damage was negligible. Still, you could make regular 'explosive' bombs if you wanted to be wasteful …. Your next few efforts – 'experimenting' with different designs – are failures as well, either exploding or failing to do anything. Finally, Deis sighs. "I don't know. Maybe you could try just putting power into a card and using it as fuel for your own ability?" You scowl – there has to be a way! Remilia had one … you try to remember what it looked like, but give up after a few minutes. Frustrated, you decide to try Deis's suggestion, and she helps create a 'pull' that will release the energy in the card when activated. When you test it, the energy spills out correctly, but trying to use it as a fuel source results in a lopsided cross, with two long legs at your feet and in the hand holding the card and two short legs at your head and free arm. It's something, at least, but even after Deis helps you make two more you're unhappy. You're missing something. "Come on, Flan, let's call it a night, okay? I know you want to figure this out right now, but we've been out here a while and you've used a lot of energy. Let's go inside and you can get some sleep before this visitor gets here. Maybe when that's done with we can try again, or ask Caster to help." You scowl – you don't need rest, not with how little you've done recently, and replenishing your energy is just a drink or two away … but Deis is just being her worrying self again.
"Tell me a story." She frowns, confused. "A bedtime story to help me get to sleep."
"I … I don't know any 'bedtime stories.' And I'm probably not that good at telling any, either."
"Just make one up." She gives you a severe look.
"If I tell you a story, you'll go to sleep?" You nod.
"As long as it's a real story. No nonsense like, 'There was an evil dragon, so a heroic knight went out to slay it and save the princess. They lived happily ever after, the end.' That's not a story, that's a bad synopsis." Deis chuckles and nods, grinning.
"Alright, I'll try to do better than that." You put your things away, then flop on top of Ershin and stick your tongue out at Deis. "Lazy brat," she says, and you giggle as Ershin starts walking back to the temple. You take Caster's gem out and latch onto Ershin, then fly there; if Sasaki finds anything strange about your manner of transportation, he keeps quiet. Caster is still busy with her spellwork and doesn't seem to notice your passage. Once you reach your room you scuttle off of Ershin and swaddle yourself in blankets. "Alright, I'll try to make this interesting …. There once was a sorceress. She was young and pretty and pretty good at all the important parts of being a sorceress. Unfortunately, she had one big problem, which was that she didn't like group magic, which is how most sorcerers and sorceresses did things. So one day, she packed her bags and left her home, vowing to make her own way as an individual sorceress.
"She made her way to a city of moderate size and started her own business, casting spells for people too poor to afford 'proper' sorceresses, or for those whose business was too illegal to go to those same 'proper' sorceresses. Not that she would do anything, of course, but she would do a lot. Sometimes her business got her in trouble with the law; sometimes she was able to help the rulers of the city in some matter. But always, no matter what she did, she kept her focus on her passion – how to find ways for an individual to be as efficient as a group. Her studies occasionally led her out of the city, and she learned a lot over the years …."
You wake up and slough off the blankets before looking around. Deis was telling you a story, but Ershin isn't here, so they must have left. You were trying to listen to the whole thing, but … the last part you remember was the sorceress's second time in prison – second time imprisoned, anyway, because she'd been to the prison several times for other business. Hmm. It's evening, so your visitor apparently hasn't arrived yet.
