Brief History
[X] Ask about what happened at the end of the last War.

"Hmm …." You float into the air and drift to your right, settling seemingly-precariously on the back of the pew. "Actually, I'm curious about the end of the last War. Perhaps you could tell me what you know?" His head tilts slightly to the side and he shrugs.

"An unsuitable Master attained the Grail, leading to the disaster ten years ago." You shake your head – you aren't sure what he's talking about, but it isn't what you wanted to know.

"No, I mean … okay, the last two Servants were Saber and Archer. They fought each other before the Grail, and from what she said, Archer's Master died. Saber's Master, Emiya Kiritsugu, should have won, but he didn't, he betrayed the Einzberns somehow. I want to know what happened." Tohsaka stares at you, confused, and even the priest seems surprised at your request. Then he smirks and shakes his head. He walks across the church, away from you, and you see that his hands aren't clasped behind his back – rather, they're loosely crossed at the wrists, and he has what looks like several empty sword hilts between his fingers. Curious, but whatever he uses to comfort himself is his own business. After reaching the end of the pews, Kirei starts walking toward the back of the church. Tohsaka watches him as well, apparently interested in the story as well.

"… It is as you say. When five Servants had perished, Archer and Saber alone remained to reach the Grail. Tokiomi had already died at that time; perhaps Archer merely wished to deny them complete victory before his time ran out. Emiya Kiritsugu, instead of using his Servant to take possession of the Grail and make a wish, used her to destroy the Grail." Tohsaka nods.

"And that's what caused the disaster. How did you find all this out, Kirei?" The priest laughs at her question as he walks across the back of the church.

"I may have been the first to lose my Servant in that War, but I still had goals to achieve. I was trying to kill Emiya Kiritsugu, of course. That man, the Magus Killer, was my enemy in that War. I was unable to kill him, of course, but … perhaps that is how Archer survived. When the contents of the Grail burst out upon its destruction, perhaps he was affected as well, and gained the resiliency to last these ten years." He nods as if solving a mystery, but Tohsaka scowls. If that is what happened, you're inclined to agree, because you have no idea how much energy the Grail had or how much of it Archer absorbed … but it doesn't really matter to you. No, what bothers you isn't how Archer survived, but that he survived at all. He said that he and Saber had unfinished business, he's still around … and Saber destroyed the Grail at Kiritsugu's command. Even if Kiritsugu didn't want there to be a winner, he shouldn't have left Archer alive before destroying the Grail, on the chance that he would have been able to prevent Saber from destroying it. So why didn't he finish off Archer? The only reason that really makes sense is if he wasn't sure that Saber could beat Archer and gambled on being able to destroy the Grail before any interference. Or if he had to destroy it when another Servant was still active, for some reason … maybe you should get Caster to explain just how the whole thing works? You try to puzzle it out yourself a bit more, then shrug and look up. Kirei is back in front of altar, staring impassively at you. "Well? If you are done here, please leave." You roll your eyes.

Tohsaka is still here, to your left, but you don't see the fake Master, so perhaps he left. Or, as Kirei just inscribed a square in his walk, perhaps he used a spell of some kind to mask or protect the area outside the square … you can't sense anything, and didn't notice anything activating, but depending on what kind of magic it was, you wouldn't have, necessarily. Or he may not be a mage or anything and you just didn't notice the boy leave, that's always possible. But what to do, what to do? Stay here and try to deal with Tohsaka's Archer if he shows himself? Go see if Emiya and Saber have gotten back and talk to her about the last War? Just go back to the temple and wait for tomorrow?

What is funny, Kirei no longer classify as human in the eyes of magic - he is actually dead from the last war's end, killed by Kiritsugu. He is alive because the corrupted Grail helps him - his heart is no longer human's one, he has magical construct in its place and will die if the Grail is cleansed or permanently destroyed ...

Just a thought, but does this mean that Flandre could potentially smell that Kirei is no longer a human? If so, it might be interesting to change the vote to one that makes a comment about him not being a human, as this could have a lot of ramifications. I don't know if that would actually work, though, so I wanted to throw out the possibility first.

She wouldn't notice anything off about him specifically without being closer and being somewhat obvious that she's doing something. She did notice something (maybe) in the church as a whole, but she can't ID that or even be sure that there's something actually wrong. ID'ing Kirei as being odd would basically require a good sniff right at the neck. Or drink some of his blood.

Not to mention that the basement UNDER the Church is what masks anything about the "false priest". What Kirei has going down there will reek with Black Magic, Death and Suffering. Flandre isn't, unfortunately, skilled enough to recognised Dark Ritual for what it is, but is probably feeling it - not that she cares, momentarily ...

Ah, well, it was worth a shot.

Kirei doesn't move, but Tohsaka shifts again, and you sigh and shake your head. You probably could get more information out of him, but that would require forcing him to do so and would probably take a long time. "Well, thank you for taking the time to explain things to me, Kirei. Perhaps we will meet again." You incline your head politely; he continues watching you impassively as you float back down the aisle and through the doors. They didn't seem surprised at your entrance, you realize, so does that mean they had a ward of some kind, or an observer? When you reach the gate rise above it and turn back to look around the whole area, but you don't see anything suspicious. You shrug and point yourself at your next destination. You don't bother to fly as fast as you can this time - it's not really worth the extra energy, even if it is fun, and you float above the Emiya residence for a moment, studying it, before landing and knocking at the door. Lights are still on inside, so you should be polite and not just walk in. Master and Servant answer the door together and you smile charmingly at them.

"… Um, Flandre? What are you doing here?" The boy frowns at you, confused by your presence.

"Oh, I had a few questions that I thought you two could answer, so I thought I'd come here before something else happened." Emiya looks at you uncomfortably.

"You wish to know about the other Archer?" You nod at Saber.

"And some other things, I think, but yes." She hangs her head. Were they already talking about that, then? After a few seconds, Emiya steps back to let you in.

"Please come in." You smile at him and hop inside. You take your shoes off - hopefully you aren't doing anything to your Barrier Jacket by separating them - and follow him into the central area. "Can I get you any tea?" You shake your head.

"No, thank you. I'm fine." He nods and hesitantly sits at the table next to Saber; you sit down across from them. Saber still looks unhappy. "Well, I'm interested in that Archer, who I understand to be a survivor from the last Grail War. Would you mind telling me about the last battle in that war?" Saber is quiet for a while, ordering her thoughts. Eventually she sits up straight and looks at you.

"Archer and I were the last remaining Servants, and our battle was the end of the War. I was unable to defeat him, and he refused to kill me." You raise an eyebrow and Emiya looks at her in surprise. "As you saw, his ability to summon Noble Phantasms gave him the greatest weapons against Servants that ever existed, as well as concealed his own identity. He could have killed me easily, yet he chose to leave me alive - he sought my submission. As a king and a Servant, I refused, of course, but …." Her face clouds and she falls silent.

"Even with a proper Master you couldn't beat him? … What about your Noble Phantasm? It wasn't any help?" Saber sighs.

"In the circumstances of that fight, I was unable to properly use my Noble Phantasm against him, and alone I was not convinced of being able to defeat him. Had my Master aided me and used a Command Seal to order me to strike Archer down, we would have been victorious. Instead, he betrayed me." Emiya's jaw drops.

"Your Master betrayed you? That - what happened?" He stares at her in confusion as her eyes narrow angrily.

"He ordered her to destroy the Grail," you say before she can respond. Emiya's head jerks up to look at you, then back and forth between you and Saber. The Servant glares at you; you shrug in response. "It was the other thing I'd hoped to learn from you, but if it came as a surprise to you, then you wouldn't know about it." You sigh and slump over the table. "Who does that? You have a wish you can use, and not only do you throw it away, you don't even make sure that you can't be interrupted? If Archer had deflected or blocked your attack, what would he have done?"

"You spoke to the priest," Saber says quietly, and you nod.

"Mm. Been talking a lot tonight; it's boring." You roll your head to the side and look at Emiya. "He was a Master in the last War and tried to kill Saber's Master. And since his group watches over the Grail Wars, I hoped he'd have some information on the Archer. But, he didn't, not really, so …." You sigh again.

"… What kind of person was your Master, anyway, Saber? Maybe we can figure out why he wanted to destroy the Grail." Your eyes flick toward Saber at her Master's question, and she stiffens. You settle down to wait - maybe this will be good? Saber stays quiet for a long time, and Emiya frowns uncertainly. "Saber?"

"I … never really understood my Master. But he was not fit to be the master of a knight. He was an emotionless man, a typical magus, focused on his objective and eliminating every obstacle in his way." She closes her eyes, recalling the past, and her shoulders tighten. Then she relaxes and stares down at the table, shaking her head softly. "If all he wanted to do was destroy the Grail, he could have done it easily. Letting it out of his sight the way he did … something must have changed." You sit up at that. Ilya said she owns the Grail, and Kiritsugu was the Einzbern Master in the previous War, so he would know where it could be found. Even if some condition needed to be achieved, then why would he have waited one second beyond that …?

"Saber, you fought Archer near the Grail, right? He was closer to it than you were?" She frowns but slowly nods.

"Yes; he had been waiting for me and stood in my way." You scowl; if Saber had to get past someone to get to the Grail, then Kiritsugu wasn't guarding it, which probably means that he only decided to destroy the Grail at the end instead of it being a gambit of some kind. You didn't really get that much of use, although confirmation that Archer shouldn't be underestimated is nice in case you don't 'entertain' him enough. Maybe you could make sure Ilya knows that her father's decision to destroy the Grail seems to have been last-minute instead of premeditated might help make up her mind … maybe she'll be able to reconcile that with the Einzbern family head somehow? Hmm ….

What do you do?

[ ] Keep talking with Saber and Shirou.
- [ ] Ask for more information on the previous Holy Grail War in general. Maybe you'll learn something useful.
- [ ] See if they'd be willing to work with Caster.
- [ ] Other?

[ ] Thank them for the information and go back to the temple.
- [ ] Get some rest.
- [ ] Talk with Deis about Spell Cards.

- [X] Verify the information you learned from the priest with Saber. The priest was no doubt duplicitous, but if Saber can verify what he said or point out things he was hiding, you can either tentatively take their words as truth or discern what the priest tried to conceal.
- [X] Ask Saber what she knows of the priest

Saber knows Kirei was working with Tohsaka I think That is valuable information if we can tease it out.
