Medea leaned back and waited for her guest to return. Her timing was impressive, as Flandre had left only a few minutes ago. "… Well? Did you find what you were looking for?" The strange suit of armor walked up to the low table and the image of the sorceress inside appeared leaning over it, grinning insouciantly.
"I did, I did, and you were correct - the boundary really is unbroken apart from the main gate." Medea scoffed to herself and wondered what the spirit had truly been after. She didn't seem to have found anything, yet she seemed quite satisfied with herself …. "So, what was it that you wanted my help with, Caster?" Medea grinned confidently and swept a hand over the ball on the table, revealing the interior of the Emiya residence, focused on the Servant Saber as they ate.
"You believe you can unravel the enchantment shielding Saber's sword?" Deis nodded thoughtfully.
"It'll take a while, and the blade will need to be out, but yes, I do." She grinned to match Medea's expression. "It's wind magic, not real invisibility, so it's something I can do. Never done long-range work like this before, but it'll be neat. Tell me who she is if you figure it out, okay?"
"I'll take care of making sure she brings it out. Have you encountered something like this before?" Deis nodded absently, not appearing to notice Medea's interest.
"Mm. Not that rare an enchantment, really, although most fighters only use it to line the edge of the sword and increase cutting power. Having an invisible sword can be a drawback, after all, especially if you lose it somewhere. The only real problem is going to be making the first hole … once I'm in, it'll be easy enough to peel it apart." Medea frowned. She had been concerned by her guests' lack of history - despite their implying otherwise, they had simply appeared in Fuyuki from nothing - but the sorceress's proclamation confirmed her suspicions. The complete lack of Magic Circuits, the odd nature and abilities of Flandre Scarlet, and now treating high-level magecraft as something common? And yet … Flandre had certainly known about things of this world. Would she need to confront them to learn the whole story? Medea sighed to herself.
"Now we wait. It will be better to not tip our full hand so soon."
"Agreed. If you don't mind, I'll just fade away for a bit." Medea nodded and the apparition disappeared. Neither sorceress trusted the other fully, but the differences in their application of magecraft led to healthy respect for each others' capabilities. Medea had her trump card, but she was wary - disassociating Deis from her armor might weaken her but there might also be unforeseen side effects. If at all possible, she preferred to keep to the realm of magecraft, where her ability to overwhelm her opponent would lead to a more assured victory. Flandre, on the other hand … Medea shivered, recalling the creature's hug, a gesture of friendship and trust. So like her children … Deis had thought to scold her reaction, and Medea had let her win the petty victory instead of revealing the reason.
She curled her cloak more tightly around her as she watched the scene in the ball. Trust. Souichirou had saved her, and now she crept behind his back, working to keep him safe and to unlock the Grail. Flandre and Deis had come to her seeking shelter, and had seemed to give her their trust … and she had gone to work trying to figure out everything she could about them and set up the necessary defenses. Deis she would deal with personally, if necessary - a rival mage would need to be eliminated first, and Deis certainly had enough power to level the temple if she wanted to. But Flandre … could she subvert her? Would it be worth the risk? Able to fight on the level of Heracles, but with a core of innocence …. She could be a wonderful child for her. She would not need to fear her death, and with the limited immortality she could bestow, the three of them would be together for a long time. Her, Souichirou, and Flandre …. She shivered and tried to pull the cloak even tighter. Did she deserve so much happiness? Hadn't she tempted the gods enough, daring to open herself to Souichirou? But … she could make it so they would never betray her - even the gods would have to work to let them go! She could have them, a kind, dutiful child and a wise, loving husband, and they would never leave her unless she allowed it ….
Night fell, and Saber and her Master took to the streets. A poor decision, patrolling alone, but there was little else they could do - the only other Master they knew how to find was Archer's, and the two groups seemed to have come to a temporary cease-fire of sorts. Medea waited for them to arrive at a quiet location in the neighborhood before springing her trap, a shadow double appearing before them as her Dragon-tooth Warriors seemed to spring up from the ground around them. The trap was one with a particular purpose, and very well-thought-out: with the Dragon-tooth Warriors surrounding them, Saber could not engage Medea directly without leaving her Master to the mercies of Medea's creations, but the longer she kept her blade out, the more time Deis had to work through the enchantment. Still, despite Medea's banter, unsuccessfully trying to draw them to her side, Saber seemed to realize something of the nature of the trap and prepared to fight as negotiations broke down.
"Shirou! Stay back!" She leapt back, striking first at the golems behind them, then swept across to clear one flank. Her Master, displaying some sense, withdrew to the temporarily-cleared area.
"Tch!" Irritated as she was by their failure to join with her, Medea couldn't help but admire the elegance of Saber's movements, the ease with which she cut down her foes. She wanted to own Saber, to break her in and make her a puppet, wearing only the elegant dresses that she allowed her to wear ….
"Keep her busy, Caster." Medea huffed at the interruption, and her shadow double went to work, launching a volley of magical energy that was harmlessly repelled by Saber's magic resistance. Medea froze for a moment, stunned at the sheer power of the Servant's protection, but Deis chuckled triumphantly. "Heh. Now I've got you …." Taking advantage of her enemy's hesitation, Saber closed the gap and struck at the shadow double, but it evaded at the last moment, darting to the side and launching a weaker volley at the defenseless Master. Forced to defend him, Saber broke off the attack and shielded her Master. Now the table had turned, and Medea's shadow launched attack after attack, following the Servant as she carried her Master away, leaping from one rooftop to the next, sometimes blocking attacks with her blade and sometimes shielding him with her body. "Damn. All the keys are inward. I need more time." Medea nodded absently at the sorceress. Time was a luxury she could not necessarily give; eventually the Servant would find a place she could shelter her Master in for long enough to deal with the double, or another Servant would join in, or -
Medea leaped to her feet and whirled as something within the temple made itself known. Deis snarled as the vision in the ball faded, and Medea felt her double vanish as the protections on the temple surged in response to the intruder. All the protections, except one specific spell, and Medea stalked to her room, staff in hand. No one was there, of course, but she could more easily discern the damage the intruder had wrought, and she paled. One spell had indeed been pulverized, torn apart and made to vanish, but it had done so long before the intruder had made itself known, and the other spells of the same kind had not been so affected, whether they were complete or not.
"Wow. What happened here?" Medea glanced at Deis, then disregarded her suspicions as the sorceress stared at the mana dispersing through the room. The sorceress had been with her or under her surveillance the entire time, and she wasn't subtle enough to destroy a spell without making Medea aware of it.
"Someone broke in and eliminated a single, specific defensive spell I had set up, but left others of the same kind alone." Medea frowned, trying to figure out why only that spell had been dissolved.
"Was it tied to anything in particular?" Medea nodded slowly.
"It had been tied to the stone I gave to Flandre as a signal."
"Then maybe the intruder didn't do it." Medea frowned at the sorceress. "Flandre can … put things away, like she did with the painting supplies? I don't know where they go, but if she put the stone away and it severed the link …."
"That … is possible." Unlikely, given the nature of the spell, but possible. "May I ask you to leave this room? I would like to search for something, and the presence of a another mage will distort the results." Deis shrugged.
"Sure. Shall we try for the sword another time?" Medea shook her head.
"Perhaps. It might be easier to simply take Saber and force her to reveal her identity." That had potential … Medea shook her head. "For now, if you would please excuse me? I need to figure out who did this." Deis nodded and slipped out, and Medea scoured the room for traces of magic. Whoever had destroyed the spell intended for Flandre Scarlet had to have left some kind of mark. Her eyes widened and she paled further. No matter how many times she checked, however, the result never changed. The only magic that had touched that spell had been her own. She shivered - had she broken the spell herself, somehow? Knowing that it was a foolish decision, had she tumbled her own protections, then set off the alarms, all unknowingly? Was this a sign from the gods, or was their curse still affecting her? She haltingly withdrew the jagged dagger from within her robes. A ritual dagger that symbolized betrayal, used to destroy any sort of magecraft … had she used it on her spell? Or did it just symbolize her status as a wi-
Medea shook her head and returned the Noble Phantasm to its place. With a thought, she transferred herself to Souichirou's bedside and stared down at the sleeping man, letting his presence soothe her. She needed to think, needed calmness and clarity, and peaceful face of her Master granted her wish.
