Firebird, a Worm AU/Xover?

This is...fairly tepid, so far as 'demonstrating wariness' goes.

Well, you might have a point. But wariness doesn't mean outright paranoia. And Taylor does seem to honestly want to like them as friends.

Personally though, while Sophia's choice of tactics is interesting, there's plenty else to chew on. We have Armsmaster doing something in both the Catherine/Minako scene and again in Sophia's scene.

Plus there is this:

Shaking her head, she slipped her phone from her pocket and flipped it open, holding it out of sight and reading the message before sending a quick reply to Minako. Closing it, she looked at her fingers and grimaced. The phone went back in her pocket and she fished out a cuticle pusher and some wipes, cleaning away the black smudges beneath her nails and wiping her fingers clean.

The wipes were stealthily tucked away in a plastic baggie sticking out the top of her backpack for throwing away later. The teacher finally withdrew from her book and scanned the room, looking sternly at them before giving them an assignment about Romeo and Juliet just as the class ended. Like that hadn't been obvious from the way she prattled on about the playwright. She couldn't get out of that classroom fast enough. What did they think was the point of making them study this, really?

That is rather suspicious to me. By a large margin.

Some of this definitely feels like Taylor-Jean, or rather, Taylor leaning a bit hard on Jean's subconscious' assistance, in both dealing with Catherine and Minako (and the school), and her relative lack of freakout post-mugging, including what she sees as a fear-inducing aura, rather than the telepathy she doesn't know about.

On getting powers, Taylor was a bit more focused on the powers and using them to escape her civilian life, even with shitty bug powers. Here, with precog, Tk, and a 'fear-of-the-righteous' aura, one would think she'd be much more psyched about becoming a cape. Instead, thus far, she seems more focused on her civilian life. As you say, Jean fragments are assisting, and it did take Taylor a while to get going in canon, but at the same time, it does change, or at least, divert from Taylor's canon actions.

Similarly with the empathy/wariness. The initial reason Lisa wormed her way in to help Taylor was because Taylor didn't see a way around associating with the Undersiders in civilian guise, in order to gain their trust and find out about their boss. Here, she opens up pretty darn quickly to Minako and Catherine. Emma may be away, and the two are newcomers to the school, but even so, the wariness is overcome pretty quickly.

But as far as strong female role models go, a subconscious X-woman isn't the worst being that could be subverting Taylor's personality.

IMO, the Tk could also be potentially a big issue, given its relative similarity to the Simurgh, but Breakers are already a thing here, and TK by itself isn't going to force the association entirely. (though IMO, it would probably show up as a point of contention at some point)

I'd point out that until this chapter, and thus this day, Taylor assumed her powers were the shield and pre-cog. Nothing more, and even then she's still been sketching her costume ideas, but she really didn't see how her powers could make a big difference. Now knowing she has TK, she's clearly already turned to taking it more seriously. Since it was her first use of TK that she's realized, I'd say that's pretty quick of a turnaround now that she sees more value in her powers.

There is also the fact that Lisa was a criminal and super villain, and Taylor was going along with some half assed and half brained undercover plan, while these are two girls at school.

That she has powers that would warn her of possible bad futures probably gives her a bit of self-confidence in dealing with her peers now. That they are supposedly new would help all that much more, since Taylor knows Emma couldn't have gotten to them just yet. With a bit of wariness that is still there, I don't see why she wouldn't be warming up to them even were this cannon Taylor.

TK isn't really an issue, as no one worries when Rune or Krieg were running around, well beyond the fact that they were Nazi criminals. It's the combination of her powers that make her similar to the Simurgh, but no one is going to start being weird about her throwing around rocks or cars with her mind while able to throw up a shield.

Now, if she starts rewriting personalities and talking in people's heads? Yeah, that might cause more of a stir.

Unless I'm misremembering, she didn't have a whole lot of non-lethal (or at least severely potentially disfiguring) option with the bugs, other than threatening people with bites and hoping they were terrified enough to listen (barring using the silk to tie them up)

Granted, too much force vs too little is a different sort of problem to solve, but if they can send Gallant out into the field, the Wards could get her equipped with some gear and have her serve as a scout/defense-oriented cape, such as it were. (Just an example, as I assume Taylor still has problems with the Wards in needing to prove herself, though her altered mentality with Jean here may change that a bit, though it might not, depending on how much the phoenix absorbed while actively being housed, where Jean was fraying).

There is also the fact that Lisa was a criminal and super villain, and Taylor was going along with some half assed and half brained undercover plan, while these are two girls at school.

Lisa's getting in had less to do with being a supervillain and more to do with her having Taylor's mental state and past as an open book, and wanting to fix Taylor. Catherine and Minako are performing a similar role, but it seems a bit too easy (at times) for them to work their way in, though I've had no issue with them so far. The empathy issue addresses that, but as a subconscious thing that isn't directly addressed, it doesn't have as much drive towards reaching that conclusion.

With a bit of wariness that is still there, I don't see why she wouldn't be warming up to them even were this cannon Taylor.

Eh, Canon Taylor had a hard time trusting anyone related to Winslow by nature of how badly she'd been burned, combined with her trigger further instilling a need to be in control of the situation.

Also, given the new independents on the scene, it appears to be a non-zero possibility that Catherine and Minako are not entirely altruistic in their picking Taylor as a new friend during their transfer.

Fair point, I got a bit ahead of myself, moreso thinking that the sheer strength of her TK is going to raise eyebrows, given that Jean doesn't have any sort of limit the way Rune does. I may have been crossing fanon a bit into the 'fear' regarding fear of powers given Canary's treatment, even though that was much moreso the mind control aspect.

Hmm, missed a few updates, so I read and reread the whole thing, like that was a chore. Grins. Anyways, one thing I kinda noticed more in my second read through, something really bad happened to Colin's kid and maybe his wife, right? That said, Taylor's looking interesting, and so is this fic.

It isn't so much she cares about being Queen bee as she wants to be unassailable when Emma comes back and she figures being socially dominant is one way to do that. Maybe not the best way, but it isn't as if her other attempts to make it stop have worked.

Taylor: "If you can't beat 'em, steal their schtick."

So far all Sophia knows is that Taylor's probably some kind of precog.

Sophia: "So she's a precog, huh? Thinkers tend to be squishy. Just because she knows what I'm gonna do doesn't mean she can do anything about it. Meh, I can take her."

Why is she trusting that these two new people are for real? Empathic senses? IIRC, she had a girl pretend to be her friend for a while before the locker incident, then backstab her for the Lulz.
Taylor never says she was pretending to be her friend or that she backstabbed her just that she stopped being her friend after the locker. That suggests she wasn't very loyal or good a friend but isn't quite betrayal or pretending.

Well, lets do a quick check:

Taylor has officially leveled up and has unlocked Telepathy: Telekinesis and Telepathy: Mind-reading. Doesn't look like she's really invested anything into the second yet since all she's getting is background noise.

Meanwhile, Armsmaster is still being Great Teacher Singer, and is lurking around doing something. Hidden camera installment? Or something else? If it's the first, he missed a prime example of Taylor using powers.

Catherine and Minako are up to something as well. They seem like they want to be friends, at least Minako does. Catherine was up to something offscreen, something that left blank gunk on her hands she had to wipe away and store to throw away later rather then right then. Which means she doesn't want someone else finding out what the black stuff is.

Finally, Pre-Cog strikes again!

Poor Sophia. Such a tragic accident. Pity you broke/screwed up your ankle. Not being able to run for weeks? That could really impact her place on the Track Team.

Looks like she's right pissed though. Wonder what she's going to try next, especially with a busted ankle.

She's hopping mad.

This won't stand!

She's going to have to put her (remaining) foot down.

Well, the serious question then is what is Sophia going to try and pull?

With that busted ankle, I doubt she'll try what's failed her all week. Just trying to physically attack Taylor has failed all but once, and that is because Taylor was distracted.

So Sophia has a busted ankle. What can she pull?

The trigger on her crossbow. Her obvious next move is to escalate and that's not gonna end well since no matter how much you escalate, Taylor escalates faster.

What's better is that she broke it in Civilian identity

PRT can't dial New Wave and say hey our Ward fucked up

She's gonna be weeks boiling in anger at her uselessness~. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

What Ward? Sophia is not a Ward in this AU. Madison is Browbeat and apparently is, but Sophia is not.

The bright side to Sophia wrecking her ankle is that the heat on Shadow Stalker will die down while she's out of action, so once she's back on her foot, it'll take a bit for the PRT to assign resources to tracking her down again after those resources were moved to tracking active vigilantes/threats

Possibly. Colin's either a part of the first Wards group or one of the first. He's been doing this for a while. It could be a wife & kid, it could just be the Wallis family home and he avoids it most of the time due to bad memories.

Regarding our special guest classmates, their identities are:

Eric Raymond, all around crooked businessman and nemesis of

Jerrica Benton, heir presumptive to Starlight Music, the company her dad founded. Also, she sings.

Meg Bennet, one of the Bionic Six

And Kevin Keene, Captain N, The Game Master.

And of course, Lieutenant Jonathon Quick, aka Quicksilver of the Silverhawks.
